Don't miss the lyrics. The Jam were the finest of my generation. Check out: "Private Hell" "Going Underground" "Down In the Tube Station At Midnight" "That's Entertainment"
Stop dreaming of the quiet life
'Cause it's the one we'll never know
And quit running for that runaway bus
'Cause those rosy days are few
And stop apologizing for the things you've never done
'Time is short and life is cruel but it's up to us to change
    This town called Malice
Rows and rows of disused milk floats
Stand dying in the dairy yard
And a hundred lonely housewives clutch empty milk
    Bottles to their hearts
Hanging out their old love letters on the line to dry
It's enough to make you stop believing when tears come fast and furious
In a town called Malice, yeah
Struggle after struggle, year after year
The atmosphere's a fine blend of ice I'm almost stone cold dead
In a town called Malice, ooh yeah
A whole street's belief in Sunday's roast beef
    Gets dashed against the co-op
To either cut down on beer or the kids new gear
It's a big decision in a town called Malice, ooh yeah
Ooh, the ghost of a steam train echoes down my track
It's at the moment bound for nowhere just going round and round
    Playground kids and creaking swings
    Lost laughter in the breeze
I could go on for hours and I probably will
But I'd sooner put some joy back in this town called Malice, yeah ooh
In this town called Malice, yeah
In this town called Malice, ooh yeah

Rick buckler was the drummer. Another jam song which highlights his drumming was funeral pyre

Welcome to the rabbit hole that is The Jam. Next Jam reaction: "Precious". From the same album (their last, "The Gift"), showing more of Paul Weller's love of soul and funk that he would bring with him to his next band, The Style Council. "Precious" would be a great follow-up to this one.

Saw them live in Leeds during that tour , they fucking hated each other and you could tell , they did the business though, I recall the crowd chanted for Tube Station and Weller said look, it's 1980 fucking 2 , he never did play it.

@@martinotoole9959 Makes sense. Paul was breaking up the band without input from Rick or Bruce.

Such a great song, I still listen to it frequently. And this song is somewhat different to most of their music, has a real jazzy throwback feel. You should also check out That's Entertainment and Down In the Tube Station At Midnight. However, the singer Paul Weller later made a new band called The Style Council, which explored more of the jazzy side of his music. Their greatest songs are My Ever Changing Moods and You're The Best Thing.

Rick Buckler is the drummer's name, and if you thought this was banging, check out Funeral Pyre, not one of The Jam's better known songs but best for drumming solo.

Interesting juxtaposition you picked up, with the "feel-good sound" vs the depressing lyrics. There's parallel with this and "That's Entertainment", which also was about the mundane nature of life.

Please remember that thee music of this time and ilk coming out of the Uk was raw and purposely unproductive which was a part of the mod/punk/sca/new romantic movement of the time. Deliberately less polished than the West coast American music that was popular at the time…Although The Jam was regarded as a Mod band, their upbeat vibe was loved by all the youth of the time from the other genre’s.
Paul Weller the main composer and lead singer went on to form The Style Council…check That’s Entertainment by the Jam, and Big Boss Groove by the style council..He also has a stellar solo career as the album Wild Wood will show he has realised over 200 songs and has the nickname ofThe Mod God…Have a listen to You do something to me and All the Pictures on the Wall, both solo efforts..

You'd think this was the only Jam record released, bloody rubbish then and even now. Great band to see live in the late 70's though
