Finn is 5 and has been in speech therapy for 6 months. Here's his progress with a severe speech delay; this issue is very emotional for me and has been my biggest anxiety for years. I'm so happy he's in private speech and language therapy now; this is a success story. I can't believe I'm saying that as we've had dark days; but I can hear the difference and believe this now can be overcome. SJ x

@@SJ_Strum Even at the beginning of the video Finn was better at talking than my son Jackson at five. He didn't really answer questions at all until he was around 8 so he wouldn't have answered any of those questions you were asking Finn, but he'd randomly comment on something he saw like a helicopter saying helicopter perfectly even though he'd only say one word a day when he was 3 and at five he was pretty much still like that. At 12 he chatters your ear off though. He didn't seem to understand what a question was until he was 8 for some reason and just wouldn't respond to them. He has an autism diagnosis though.

My younger brother had partial hearing loss from getting Rubella as a baby, and as such had quite severe speech delay as we didn't realise he had hearing loss until he was about 3. After many years of speech therapy he was enrolled in kindergarten. I can now say he's 19, has a better vocabulary and pronunciation than most people, is at university studying urban planning, and is doing fantastically well. I remember how hard he found it and we as a family found it in the earlier years, but with the help of speech therapy and also doing a lot of early childhood music lessons - to help connect sound and his brain better, his delayed speech became a non issue entirely. You should be so proud of Finn! It will definitely keep improving and getting better to the point where his speech will probably be better than other kids in his class at school I imagine!

Thanks so much for making this video. I have a 5 year old with a language delay and he has been in speech therapy for close to 2 years now. He has come a long way, and it's great to look back and see how much progress has been made. I remember also thinking that it will be a quick process, and it has been hard, emotional but rewarding at the same time. Like you I get really emotional when I speak about it. Thanks again, it's nice to see and hear from other moms with similar fears. I wish someone will just reassure me that everything is going to be all right.

This is so heart-warming❤ as I have twin boys who I do believe have speech delay and although I am still in denial I know something has to be done as they are due to start school at the end of the year. They are at nursery, and their speech is coming along, but they still won't really engage in a conversation about anything specific, and sometimes I think they do not fully understand when asked a question😢

Wow, I really, really, needed to see this. My daughter has just turned three and has been referred for SaLT by her nursery. I was very against it as I didn't see any issues compared to how our six year old was at her age. We have had two appointments and on hearing them assess her it is evident that she uses the back of her mouth for sounds rather than the front, she struggles with F,S,T,V etc. I feel very emotional and protective over it all and have questioned myself on whether I should have picked anything up sooner. I am also feeling like this will be one very long struggle, my daughter gets frustrated when we do the activities, as to her - she is saying the sound correctly and at that point I struggle as I don't want to push her. Hearing how much your son has come on in just six months is inspiring. We are considering a private SaLT if we don't feel progress is being made after 4 months. Thank you xxxxx

Elaine x ah Elaine you’re exactly like us: in my other videos I talk about it a bit more. It’s very hard to know if it’s normal, a bit of a delay or something more serious. They told me they would only have started therapy at age 3 anyway; so don’t worry about the last few years at all - they only asses them until they are 3 then they start. Xxxx

I am early childhood specialist and I know how hard it is for parents to see their children needing assistance; some even give up because they can’t bear it. Whats harder than giving up, though, is to stare your own anxiety & fear in the face & move forward for the sake of your child. And you have truly reaped the rewards; Finn has made absolutely amazing progress and it took one strong protective mama to open that door for him! Way to go, Finn and SJ too! 😁💕

Wow the tears are flowing! Finn is such a superstar. You all must be so proud and I'm so happy for you! I can't get over the difference, he's come so far in just 6 months! Our boys sound like they're at quite similar stages - Tommy is 7 and deaf though so we use sign language too which helps. So glad to hear Finn is thriving at school. It always amazes me how understanding children can be. Putting his lips together is one of the main problems my son has too so we're still trying to turn his "Toh-ee" into "Tommy". He can say the M in the alphabet but it's not quite worked into everyday speech yet! Finn's speech is definitely giving me hope! Love to you and the family xxx

Hazel Kjærsen ah thanks for all your support; I was thinking of his speech you sent me when I did this and I found it so inspiring to keep going - even when it felt so hopeless. I’m so happy we’re getting the help we needed now; signing is amazing isn’t it. You do an absolutely staggering job with those gorgeous little ones xxxxx

Hi SJ. I am a speech therapist with over 28 years experience and I love to see kids' speech progress and see the difference in the child and parent. It is a credit to your speech therapist but also to the hard practice that you do with Finn. Would you mind if I shared your video with others? I am currently putting together an online course for parents and classroom assistants to teach them how to achieve clear speech in 6 steps. xx
