LOVE Colette Hiller and her Ray-bans. "we're in the pipe, 5x5". I'll never forget this scene.
Yeah it's a cool shot. Very iconic
When I merge into traffic I always say, "were in the pipe, 5x5." and my kids are like, "what the heck does that even mean?"
Great comment. That's me from this day forward.
It means you are on track to meet your goal. In the pipe- straight path. 5 by 5- loud and clear. Level 5 loudness and Level 5 clarity.
Radio Communications receiving loud and clear
In this context, seems misused
@@moosepasshippie I never heard that in the military. We always said lima charlie.

After playing starcraft for years and never knowing the origin of the dropships, finding this catch phrase was super cool.
"Hang on, we're in for some chop"
Halo too.
Absolutely
@@marklee1194 It's funny watching some of the clowns stating this movie took the line from halo..... basic math skills
now go read Starship Troopers! :)
I saw this is the theater with my brother back in 1986 and we saw it in one of those old theaters that had the huge screen and this loud as F sound system. It was so incredibly intense I remember it to this day me and my brother looking at each other just in disbelief, the outside of the ship going through the clouds and the scream of the jets just so loud as hell I couldnt believe it, as if a real jet engine was going off in the theater. This is by far the greatest sci fi movie ever made.
I like how they made this "Colonial" Marine drop ship look and sound like the current at the time US Marine F-4 Phantom. Bad to the muther f'ing bone! Best combat drop scene in movie history hands down.
And now these days do you tend to ask "WHAT?1 WHAT DID YOU SAY? SPEAK LOUDER?!"
;)
If only James Cameron took his time........ filming date 1985.9.30 ~ 1986.2.28? slighlty too early & quick
I'd love for my local movie theater to do an Alien/Aliens double feature.
@@user-tb6sm4jg4d HAHAHAHA
The best part of this scene is right around 44 seconds, you get the sense of the intensity of the drop when even the co-pilot has to take a deep breathe to prepare.
Well spotted. Nice detail.
Co pilot- spunkmeyer
I also love the way Ferro flexes her fingers before she grabs the stick. So to speak.
0:52 He also gives a little twitch as if he hit the manual release to initiate the drop.
I never saw that! Poor Spunkmeyer!
"We're in the pipe, 5x5" is the one line I remember most from this movie and I reference it quite often.
I've heard the evil slayer Faith say this a few times on the show "Buffy." She sometimes says "Oh, everything's alright B, five by five."
Bill Paxton is Missed (1955 - 2017)
"Wash day, no clothes?"
1:14 This movie is so engrained in me that Ferro's bad-ass line has become part of the ethos of the voice in my head. On a rare occasion, every long once in a while, I'll be driving my car or riding my bike, and a single lane in traffic will open up between lines of multiple cars. At just the right moment I'll downshift and take off, just hauling ass for a few seconds though the corridor of vehicles on either side; Ferro's badass confident voice comes to me and I think to myself - "We're in the pipe, 5 X 5..."
P.S. - my cat's name is Ellen Louise Ripley, Ripley for short 😼🤓
@@mcf777 not jonesy? c'mon now

They showed her get killed on David Letterman with blood and all that scene is burned into my mind
I do the exact same thing - I just drove from Pittsburgh to Connecticut last week and definitely muttered that under my breath lol
Colette Hiller has some of the best line delivery in an action movie ever in this scene. Fero is such a badass.
She sounds exactly like I'd expect a marine/army chopper pilot would sound like.
@@joet7136 All marines actors except William Hope(Gorman) (and Michael Biehn(Hicks) that joined cast later and replaced James Remar) were trained by real marines as preparations for movie.

@@floydvaughn9666 Semper Fi!
Little details like Fero clinching her hand before she grips the control stick make this scene seem so authentic.
You can tell she has done this a number of times
It's the tight shot on her face as she's doing the countdown that sells the scene. It's all gold, by rights she'd have a Best Supporting Oscar for this.
When they fell from the Sulaco and it was miles in the distance in seconds love that. James Cameron said he wanted everything to be believable about this movie
and he delivered
I thought I was the only one. I LOVE that little detail!
I remember this scene to this day. The little details like this matter.
“Express elevator to hell” is cinematic dialogue gold
Improvisation gold...
And I just read that Paxton improvised that in a rehearsal, and then two month later when they shot the scene, Cameron remembered it, and told him to say it again.@@TMouse-hd5jb
Also the fact that it truly was an "express elevator to hell" because it took them straight to a planet inhabited with xenomorphs
"Somebody, wake up Hicks!"
Props to Robert A. Heinlein.
@@volumeturneddown9600 read Starship Troopers few months ago. It was nothing like the Verhoeven satire. The MI are very small in numbers due to their training and rely on powered armour that act as force multiplier. They even bombard the surface before drop. The bugs aren't even primitive and is also a spacefaring race. They shoot beam weapons, too.

Love Hudson's jubilation contrasted with Ripley's anxiety.
She knows the creatures of her nightmares are down there waiting for them.
For these veterans, it's another milk-run. Same shit, different day.
Hudson picked up on that and tried to ease her anxiety a little.

Aliens: The most badass film that ever existed.
The pilot is so cool, she wears sunglasses in space! The absolute confidence of a cool-headed pilot, "We're in the pipe...5x5". Badass
Too bad she and that fuckin' goober Spunkmeyer forgot to close the door 🙂↔️😢
Funny. There is a sunglare in space. And much worse than what we know on the ground or in the air. Astronauts use shields with thin layer of actual gold on their helmets to deal with that.
She's the absolute hotness... srsly.
Lady gaga, of course, is the best
In space the radiation from star is much more harsh than within atmosphere. So this, actually, makes sense.
Dude when those doors open up below and you see the planet. I get chills. This is going to be a freaking crazy drop!
Best combat drop scene in movie history. I like how they made the "colonial" Marine drop ship look and sound like the at the still in service "US" Marine F-4 Phantom. Bad to the bone!
idk the starship trooper movie attack on Klendatu was pretty badass as well.
I love how Ferro is a bad ass pilot...
James Cameron knows how to portray strong females in his movies; J.J. Abrams doesn't - he makes it too deliberate. Cameron simply inserts them as a matter of fact, talented and confident people going about their business.

How good is this for 1986!!!
It's great for 2024.
Hey, this is exactly how I drop of my kids to school everyday. Ok I don’t have the sunglasses she’s wearing. But everything else is spot on.
So…you’re in the pipe, then… 😂 😉
Cinemas should show these films again so that fans can relive the big screen experience.
They liked her character so much they basically made her the Dropship personality in Starcraft.
my god just this scence has more character than any new movies we get these days
Paxton was so great in this movie. His We are on an express elevator to hell going down, is a wonderful line said just right.
Bro had at LEAST a dozen quotable lines. Many I still say. “In case you haven’t been paying attention…” and of course “Game over, man. Game over”
That pilot be flexing her fingers like she a pro gamer
This scene has stuck with me since the original release. That's a few years ago. Colette Ferro, "we're in the pike 5x5"... will live on in infamy.

Pipi
Pike is correct... short for turnpike. The pilot is on course within the approach and landing vectors.

We on express elevator to hell, going down!
There should be an an amusement park ride based on this theme/segment.
Still a classic scene that modern movie makers seem not able to remake today. As for the explosive drop of the ship and the frigate? Either the drop ship was kicked out by explosive bolts for a rapid deploy or the Sulaco had to drop from deep orbit to skimming the upper ionosphere to allow the drop ship to well drop that fast (like a combat drop) to minimised being profiled on the trip down. It would not surprise me if the Sulaco did have to come down to the upper atmosphere to allow for the drop as it would be in a better position to protect the drop craft until last moment.
Great analysis bravo.
The _Stucco_ probably has great RCS to station-keep so she can provide Surf-to-Turf support for the grunts.
They are in low orbit, but I believe much of what looks like them dropping down, is more like the Sulaco is flying up, or forward, orbitally. Essentially the dropship 'tucks and rolls' as the troopship skitters at high speed at low orbit. The loss of artificial gravity, combined with that lurch from being flung away is what makes them sick. Then Ferro kicks in the engines to maneuver them into their insertion arc and all the normal air physics kick in.
least thats my take
Listen to the drop sequence again, it's loud. They're either already in the upper atmosphere or there's a top-mounted thruster we don't see. Either way, after they put the crew into hypersleep (which we can't do) for the FTL trip to another star system (which is probably never going to happen) I'm not gonna worry too much about the Sulacco's exact orbital profile.
the drums getting faster is what makes this scene so great
The lousy sequels which came later, only made this film shine even better.
This was not a lousy sequel. Actually this is in the record books for one of the few movies that was better than the first.
@@SuperMatrix59 I meant the sequels which came after this. :)

"On my mark.... five... four... three... two... one... MARK"

Now, I loved Aliens...but, the one thing that always bugged me was that they don't even leave one person aboard the _Sulaco_ . Literally the entire human complement (and 1 android) are put in one dropship and the _Sulaco_ is left empty. There must be a lot of cost-cutting going on in the future if they can't even send along a few Navy personnel to crew the ship.
The AI probably runs the ship. When they're down there it might be considered unnecessary to have someone aboard the ship. I would prefer at least one human overseer on such a ship, but nothing that a human can do couldn't be done by a strong AI, like Mother or Father.
@@Tristan3D But even if AI ran the ship it didn't do them any good on this mission. It couldn't send down another dropship on its own or offer help in any other way. Bishop still had to remotely pilot a ship down _after_ he made that long crawl through the pipe. It would have been far more useful if a human or android on the ship could have been monitoring the situation and helped them out without the team on the ground having to do everything for themselves with only the resources they brought with them.
@@arkwill14 The Company is too cheap to staff an automated starship, and the Marines don't ask questions they know they won't get answers to. (alternate answer, the Company intentionally under-equips and under-informs the mission so they won't succeed in destroying the valuable xenos.
Arcwall14
I know I love this movie but it didn't make any sense to leave the sulaco without a back up crew. If you think about it, Ripley really didn't need to go down with them. She could have monitored everything from the body cans and just stayed out of the action. Still an awesome movie though!
It’s known in the movies lore that Weyland-Yutani knew of the aliens presence in this movie and basically sent the marines there to be guinea pigs in a test. Same as the 1st movie. They didn’t want any witnesses and wanted the alien as a bio-weapon. It was a kill two birds with one stone situation because it also provided a way to get rid of Ripley before she could inform the public. Sending any crew on the ship would foil the whole plan
I’ve felt that feeling many times. So cool to be afraid for your life. Safety is for the next world. The floor drops out below you and you ain’t on no carnival ride.

Badass pilot
As someone who learned english as a second language I always thought that what the pilot says sounds cool, but had no idea what she was saying. She says: "We're in the pipe, five by five", the first part "in the pipe" means they are on course and in the correct flight path, the "5x5" means that the radio signal is strong and clear.
Ferro is a legend. Smart, confident and damn switched on. Great teeth too. She's like Rebecca Chambers from STARS, small but frickin capable.
When the hatch open and seeing the pilots heads moving about the cockpit doing their business is nice detail
"We on express elevator to hell, going down!". In hungarian , the title of the movie was literally translated as "The name of the planet is Death".
Yup, "A Bolygo neve, Halál" and it sounds dumb even in Hungarian. But not even close to the worst creative renamings we had for films and shows.
