This is Coach Washington. I've noticed the views of this video has doubled in the last week. Tell me if this video is working for you. There is a part two that has additional drills that I can put up.
I just have 2 questions. So I am literally just getting into pole vault and don't know a whole lot, i've been practicing at my school for a little bit I feel like I'm getting the hang of things. Although there are some things that I'm doing wrong that I can't seems to get right. First off, it seems that when I take off, shortly after, i begin to rotate, for some reason anything that I do to try and counter this rotation doesn't work. I think it may be because I'm holding the pole across my body rather than straight in front. Also, i've been running with the pole above my head the whole time, mainly because of my grip being pretty low. Should I always be running with it at my hip, or only do that when I'm at a high enough grip/good enough to do it. Also, I think that because the pole is above my head, I have more time to move it and I might be moving it across my body while running. Any response helps thanks!
Zach Charendoff ZACK'S ANSWER PROBLEM: BODY ROTATES AFTER PLANTING AND SHOULD i RUN WITH THE POLE ON MY HIP, Hi Zach sometimes that rotation you’re talking about is because you have more speed or energy than you need for your grip height. Or after the plant you are pushing out away from the pole with your left arm. it could be that your grip is so high that it slows your swing so much you stall out and you spin. The last reason is pulling with your right hand. Your goal is to push the pole to Vertical. Pulling stops the poles forward movement, Answer: 1, Raise your grip as needed and Plant high and don’t pull. 2.Your left arm should be out and away from your face at the plant. As your body catches up with your left arm and the pole. The left arm should break passing to the left side of you body in a control manner(I am assuming your right handed). it’s kinda like rowing a boat but keep your arm close to your body as to help you stay straight. Your right and left hand must work together to keep you from rotating. 3, Drive your drive leg up like a basketball layup while dragging the trail leg straight through the box to the back of the pit. As your left foot passes over the box point your heel to it. Remember the pole vault swing starts as soon as you leave the ground. A strong swing leg breaking at the waist half way through the swing flips your body into an upside down position. As far as running with the pole. You should already be running with the pole by your hip. Doing the five step drill on my video will help you. You can raise the pole to pant at the count of one or two in the drill. Some vaulters run faster if they are free to move the pole while running, but i prefer my vaulter’s to stick the pole to their hip so they don’t get behind in the vault. Also while running keep your shoulders parallel to the runway. So as you can see, There is more than one way to run with the pole. Find out whats comfortable to you. These suggestions should help you. If they don’t i’ll need a video clip of your problem. Coach Washington
i really want to pole vault. i did track this year (im a freshman) but my coach said i didn't really have potential so i stopped...but i only practiced like 2 times. i mean i'm not really a sprinter so that would make it a lot harder but do you think i could figure out how to be good?
Hi Madison. As a freshman you have a lot of time to learn how to pole vault. You don't have to be the fastest and strongest to Pole vault. You need to be determined and committed to learning the right way. 90% of my women vaulters first picked up a pole in college. I have one girl who started on 2/21/17 at zero feet and by 5/7/17 has jumped 9-6 inches. Don't let anyone stop your dream because they can't see the future. I suggest joining a Vault club if one is near by. And if you have a interest in the sport, just do it. Coach Washington
This video honestly doesn't show how to pole vault correctly. You're supposed to line up with the pole and stay square, row through the top end and meet at your shins, pull past your head, not creating the separation at your hips.
Hi Zach, I have a good grasp on the pole vault and also have friends who can help with your questions. Send me your question's and I will try my best to answer them or find the answers. This year i had a female vaulter jump 10ft after only practicing for 3 months.
These girls do not have perfect form ,but there form is good enough to show a beginners these drills. If you noticed I did not go into depth. I can talk about CIL / whip swing/ pull turn/running tall/push step/ getting back/etc. but i wanted it short and simple. I only made this video for a friend.

I'm in 8 grade and I think I am too short to do pole vault 5 ft
That's not true. the world champion last year was only 5'8. My pole vaulters are only 5'3 to 5'6. You can do it.Jermaine Akida
MRRAWCAT thanks for the advice
This is excellent. 1:24 is what really is needed for my crew. Thank you!
Great Video showing proper vault progression! Well done!
Great video I am doing some of these drills with my JH pole vaulters
Very helpful thank you so much!:)
awesome! we need more people of color valuting
Thxs. I was just curious how you learn to PV. The athletes at the games on tv make it look effortless. :-)

What does Sue mean? You mean make an S when you plant?
Sue is the name of the female vaulter in the clip.

Send your questions to Mrrawcat not Cameron. My mistake.
Why can't I hear anything
I didn't record any audio for this video ,because i made this video for one of my ex student athletes who started teaching pole vault at her school.
