- A friend reported smoke coming from the body of their food mixer, so I take a look and find the X2 capacitor on the incoming mains was in pieces.

Very clean video. I just brought same Kenwood model which is now 40 years old from my mother to repair. Replacing these capacitor should be the first thing I must try. Hopefully that should work.

Make sure you get parts from a reputable seller because the capacitors need to be genuinely 'Class X' rated ones.

You be careful with that excitement, you could end up like me, but best of luck with the repair. As I have said elsewhere make sure you get the capacitor from a reputable source as the X2 rating is important.

Just found my Mums Kenwood mixer and it works but it does have this Smokey smell. I think I am gonna open it up and replace these components just to be sure. It hasn’t been used in about 20 years either. Great video btw 👍.
Probably best to take a look and if the capacitors have not already been changed get them changed, because it's only a matter of time. Better that you don't spend the time using it wondering it's going to go bang.
People love these machines, I think mostly because they hold memories.

Repaired an A901 model exactly like this with a circuit board - it was stuck on high speed. I had to dismantle it to get at the board, but replaced all the capacitors with a kit of ebay, runs perfectly.
That's good to know that the speed control problems can be fixed by changing them as well.

Thank you, I hope it goes well for you. I don't know where the other cap sits in the circuit, but there is always the potential for it to have taken the triac out. If it has, it's irritating, but just a component that can be changed.

Great video but I need further advice. I have taken a Chef A901 to pieces and inside the motor there is a fan blade at the opposite end to the mother board. This appears very loose with lots of play and turns separately to the motor. Any ideas about the fan?
I'm really sorry but I never went any deeper than you see in the video, I was just doing a favour for a friend. I wouldn't have thought the fan should be free to spin, you'd expect it to be fixed. Yep both caps popped was hoping not to change triac but guess it's for the best result
Just a tip: Always take solder blob on your iron to the joint this transfers heat rapidly to the joint, thus preventing damage to the components.

Thanks. Unfortunately the pliers are unbranded and about 30 years old, a 'present' when I retired. I've looked at Screwfix and they have a pair that look similar for £8, but I have no idea of the quality. Knipex brand are quite a bit more and there are pairs of all types from what I've seen online at comprehensive tool suppliers. Sorry I can't be more specific.
Excellent video thank you. I also have an A901 (serial number 0932359) which now runs at high speed on all settings. I understand that the 2 capacitors are the most likely cause of fault but there is no obvious sign that they have failed (not blackened or damaged). Would you recommend I replace them anyway or is there anything else I should check first? I don't think there was any black smoke. Any advice greatly appreciated.
20 minutes into a 6 Nations match, what a time to post a question :) I would change them anyway as they are the weakest link in the circuit. Make sure you get replacement X2 capacitors from a reputable source.
I've not studied the speed controller circuit but if you cannot see any blackening of the resistors then the next thing after the capacitors that I would look at would be a mechanical issue from the knob towards the electrical circuit.

My A901 had the common smoke issue so replaced the capacitors, resistors and triac etc with a kit purchased online. The Chef does go round but only at 1 speed- very fast. Any idea what might be wrong? I have no control over the speed. I am pretty sure I wired it all up correctly.
I didn't look at what the speed control knob actually adjusted. I could see it moved the mechanism up and down, presumably there is a variable resistive device underneath the moving plate. I've seen a comment else where saying about a centrifugal component, which implies a self adjusting rotating part in there somewhere. I'm sorry I don't have the machine so can't go digging inside.
I am about to make this exact same repair and was about to but the two components you recommend from CPC Farnell. However the larger one, CA07109 is out of stock. Can you recommend an alternative? Thanks :)
I had a look at the CPC site and there are others that seem the same spec. I could not see any difference apart from the manufacturer, if someone can see a significant difference let us know. An alternative part is CA07147
Mine had the identical problem, so I guess it must be a weakness. Repair kit on its way.
This type of capacitor dries out over time and many of these machines are at least 30 years old, so I'm afraid it's inevitable. Many other domestic items would have the same problem, if we kept them as long, but we don't tend to.
I hear the dreaded smoking capacitors are a common failt on the A901, do you think replacing the older style capacitors in an A701a with the more updated one's would cause it to have the same issues as the A901?
It's not related to the make or model, it's simply the age and type of the capacitor. So changing the capacitors in any device with newer ones of the correct type will prevent the old capacitors from breaking down and causing you a problem.
My KM201 is later model but same issue - has a cct board and more components to control it, - a very simple speed control, not sure how it works. One cap shorted and burned and spit in half long ways. Will do the fix soon. Has 2 small blue caps also - prob tantalum - some say they can cause problems too?
Yes I believe some tantalum capacitors can fail, but I don't know whether it is a particular type in a particular setting. I'm going to search out of curiosity now.
I did this job a few years back with a kit off ebay. free mixer essentially out of the whole deal. my dial has to be pushed in and turned to actually select speed. I see yours is flush against the machine. going to have a look as assume an easy fix?
The one I did was quite straight forward as I could see which component was faulty and fortunately the capacitor spec was still visible. Although as you say, the kits are available. my only thought about buying a kit from a less reputable source is that the X2 specification of the capacitor has to be genuine, it is sat across the mains.

If you are in the UK then this is the sort of thing, but I've never ordered from here. Weller is a well known soldering specialist, so if it really is them then it would be good. Lead based solder may have heath concerns, but may not. It is certainly easier to use. You shouldn't need flux as it is built into the solder, just don't breath in the fumes, rosin flux can affect your lungs.
The highest risk is from flicking solder into your eyes, so wear safety glasses/goggles, somehow it can get behind ordinary glasses.... And don't think you don't need them, 'cos you do.
Practice wrapping some wire and soldering before you attack the real thing, get used to wielding the hot iron.

What type of Wire did you add to the Wire
It looks like I used some 0.9mm wire. It would be stiff enough to hold the capacitor in place. You would only need it if your capacitor legs are too short.

My first answer is I'm afraid I don't know, I don't own the machine and would have to visit a friend to open it again to look. But if the resistors are still the correct colour, that is to say, not burnt, then there is probably no need to change them. I've looked at the close-ups in my video and think they are 56 ohms 5% tolerance and 220 ohms 5% tolerance, probably 1/2 watt, but I may be wrong. What are the colour bands are on them?

I snipped the big capacitor off and it still works. Does it need it? I know it's a silly question. It was smoking but now works ok
I would still suggest you replace both capacitors as they will most probably be of the same age and the second is likely to fail. I don't mean this sarcastically, just logically, but it would be fair to say that if the manufacturer didn't need to fit the one you have removed, then they wouldn't have. I'm afraid I don't profess to know everything about the machine but I suspect the capacitor is being used as a filter, the other is part of the speed controller circuit and I would highly recommend changing both. Hope you have success.
The capacitors operate as mains filters and keep radio interference off the mains as well as spikes etc. Best to keep to manufacturers spec.
We have same model , belonged to my late mother in law, same issue, i did see another repair video, cant find it now , chap said burning / smoking caused by dust so just needs clean ? Ive not looked yet but will see if capacitor looks damaged. Thanks for helpful video.

Hi, pleased that you are having at go at repairing it. If your machine is an A901 then on the machine I worked on the larger one is Class X2, 0.15µF 275V the smaller one is Class X2, 0.047µF 275 V. The X2 bit is very important, I suggest you use a reputable supplier.

I didn't have any diodes that I could see on the machine I repaired. Are there any identifying marks on it and whereabouts in the circuit is it?

@@twotone3070 It wasn't a diode, it was a burned resistance on which you could not see any colors anymore. I changed it but it still doesn't work. I'll have to look at it again sometime.

To be honest I don't know, it's not mine and I've never used one, so maybe.
I found the same model in a family member's attic, didn't think twice and used it as it was to knead bread for 2min and then brioche for another 2min and then I heard a "crack" and it started to smoke and smell. I opened it and it's the same problem, I'll get the parts and ask my husband to do the repair but I've seen videos where they also restore the whole gear box (cleaning the old grease and refilling it with new one) and I'm wondering if it's necessary to do so because the mixer is 30yrs old if not more and hasn't been used for at least 10yrs, what do you think ? Your friend is using her old mixer thanks to your repair, do you know if she ever had to replace the grease ? Thanks in advance !
Hi, she is using her mixer and as far as I know there have not been any other repairs or servicing done, so the gearbox as is from the factory. Now, that doesn't mean that it wouldn't be slightly more efficient if it had an entire overhaul and if you found it in the attic, then it will perhaps depend on what that environment as been like. If it's been excessively hot the grease could have dried to the point of being useless.
If you can peer inside and see if the grease is still tacky I think I'd be happy to use it like that, if the grease comes off in dry lumps then maybe not.
People seem to love these machines and it would be a shame to see it go to the dump for the sake of a little TLC.

I would change the grease. My mothers one failed in the top gearbox (1 plastic gear), and I found a guy on ebay selling recreations of the gear. I realise this is 7 months ago, but you can still do it. My personal mixer is about to get the works done to it, Caps and grease. It went pop during the great pandemic home baking explosion. I bought it 20 years ago from under a table at a car boot sale!
Thanks for an excellent video. Both my capacitors have blown and there are bits missing. The one cap shows 0.15uF but the other cap I can't determine its value. Also the one resistor which has the colour code green, blue, but I can determine the third colour as it is blown. Any idea what the second cap value is and the resistor? Thanking you in advance
If the Green,Blue, (Black I think from the video) resistor and the 0.047µF have blown there is a possibility that the Triac has also suffered.

I'm afraid I don't know because I've never worked on a 701.
If you have some capacitors of this type in there you can't go wrong by changing them like for like. Is there anything left of the capacitors? You may be able to find an actual repair kit specifically for a 701 and if it details the component values you could them purchase they from a reputable source.
@@twotone3070 Actually Lana’s Kitchen Spares have a kit for the A701A. They are X2 caps. However, there is a 1 cap kit and a 2 cap kit so the machine has to be stripped first to check out which circuitry it has !
Thanks very very much for this video. Last night I heard a pop from the mixer and it died (we've owned and used it for about 38 years now!). I opened it now and found exactly what you describe. What is the value of the other capacitor - the small one? Although it looks intact, I will follow your advice and replace it as well.

@@twotone3070 hi, this video looks really helpful! The larger capacitor on mine has the value 250v on it and either 0.15 or 0.13 uf (can't tell as that's where some of the plastic has blown off!). Would the ones you used still work (it's an A901) or does the 250v make a difference?
@@LizzieFeathers1 The ones I used would be fine. If the replacement component has a greater rated voltage then there isn't a problem, the other way round would be wrong. The most important specification is the rather innocuous 'X2' bit, this in effect refers to it's 'safety rating' and is the bit that should NOT be ignored. Incidentally and a bit geeky, capacitors probably don't come in values with 1&3 in them, 1&5 together are what is known as preferred values, 15nF or 150pF or 0.015uF that sort of thing.

My Kenwood just made a loud pop and started smoking, and it stank! I have opened it up and the 0.047 capacitor is cracked like the 0.15 capacitor shown in your video. I have ordered the repair kit and will attempt the repair myself. Do you think it necessary to also replace the resistors and triac?
As it is in the speed controller part of the circuit I would probably change the triac as there is a risk that damage could have been done and you'd end up doing the job twice if that was the case.
As far as the resistors go, if there is no damage visible you could take the risk that they have not blown open circuit, but then again they are not that expensive and you probably won't need to open it twice.
As I have mentioned before, the important part of the capacitor replacement is the X2 specification, it's a safety issue.

@@annemccabe9126 Nice hot iron, flux either in the solder or separately, make sure the tags are clean, make mechanical connections before you solder if possible, take photos of where things go, check the leads on the triac are the same configuration, don't heat the components too long, plenty of light, wear safety glasses - you won't get 2 goes if you flick solder in your eye, work out the order of operation so you don't block your own workspace. Nothing to it - oh and don't burn your fingers. :)

You say that yours is an A701? I have only fixed this A901. I have to say I only did the repair you see in the video on that machine, any advice I am giving is purely theoretical and not from experience. If the machine is more than 20 years old I would suggest changing any capacitors as there is a possibility that the capacitor in the speed controller is failing when you draw more electric current during mixing as this loads the motor. Also there could be carbon brushes in the motor which are no longer making a good contact and again when the load is applied to the motor the higher resistance will cause the voltage at the motor winding to reduce, slowing the machine. I don't know how the speed controller works in detail, but those are the two parts I would look at first. I hope this helps.

Thank you for posting this; it was really helpful. I'm in the middle of rebuilding my Kenwood Chef A901 like the one in this video and decided to regrease the gearbox and give the machine a general overhaul at the same time. Gearbox - fine. Motor - fine. What has completely defeated me is reattaching the small squarish red lever (top front) by the pin at the top of the shaft of the lever and the spring above the plastic housing. Does anyone out there know if there a knack to getting the pin back into place? If the spring goes through the small hole in the middle of the lever shaft, to what does the other end attach?
I'm afraid I cannot see in the video how any of that is assembled, it wasn't where I was working. I don't have that machine so can't even take a look now, sorry. I hope you find what you need.
Ah, no worries. Thanks to a post on Fixya, someone very kindly explained the process. For the record and if anyone else is looking at this later, it's important that the spring is attached first - it clips on the gearbox housing itself. You know you've got it right when the lever moves correctly if pushed. Then, a little not-so-subtle applied force got the pin (through the lever shaft) into it's little groove. No-one was more startled than me when it was switched back on - and works! Thanks again.

My A901E too started smoking when used, my husband after looking at your video will now try to fix it himself as companies around here said it was too hard and takes too much time therefore it would be cheaper to purchase a new one, but we would like to pass this mixer onto our daughter. You will need to open it first, take a look at which components are damaged and that the configuration of the circuit is the same. I wouldn't want to recommend the wrong items based on what was in the one I repaired.
There are web sites selling kits to replace all of the electronic components, but again you would need to see exactly what you need.

@@twotone3070 I got it but it is about 702 models. 902 is much different. Anyway I opened the armature I have cleaned it and now I have to put everything back :) I need some special washers though and I have to make a little search for them. I will try to post some pics soon

Well mine is all mounted on a circuit board and looks like two capacitors have burst. I cant see hoe i can repair it short of complete disassembly including unsoldering 4 wires and unmounting the circuit board. And its difficult access to the screws. so i think its junk now tbh.
Could you leave the existing capacitor leads in place attached to the circuit board, form hooks out of the ends and solder the new capacitors to them? Shame to bin it when you can see what the problem is, the machines seem to be well liked by their users.
Think I had same problem as you with a circuit board also maybe I can can some knowledge I would appreciate much. Changed 1 burned out capacitor and resistor the other capacitors looked fine ran it for 5 minutes and other capacitor burned out. If you could contact me I would really appreciate it. The Caps on the mixer are both different ! , but you have put 2 of the same type back on !
On my machine the larger one is Class X2, 0.15µF 275V the smaller one is Class X2, 0.047µF 275 V. They both look similar but are different values.

@@SpikesMavic I didn't choose a particular manufacturer, but I did use a CPC Farnell for the supplier to ensure I got genuine quality components. The part numbers were CA07109 and CA07107 respectively. Cost more for the postage than the parts, a total of £7.02 but you do get 5 of each. The important bit beyond the capacitive value, is that they are X2 rated and e-bay may not result in the best quality.

I don't have the actual mixer in the video so am unable to test anything for you, also it's a different model. But you would need to take the cover off that lets you see the mechanism on the inside of the speed knob to work out how it is done. Obviously having disconnected it from the mains by removing the plug from the wall. In the A901 there is a capacitor in the speed controller circuit and this may be the same in yours, if that is the case it could be as simple as replacing it. Let us know what you find - TAKE THE PLUG OUT! :)

I mean it needs tobe slower than the current speed at level 1 or 2
It is simple. Just driver job.
There are two bolts attached to springs . just tighten a little bit and check the speed with power.
Triac id the last thing to be replaced if it is not working properly.

I replaced both reassembled and ran it for about 5 minutes only to have another capacitor burn arghhh need help please...how do I contact you thank you so much 😊
As both the capacitors are likely to be the same age, I would simply replace the other one. Make sure you are using ones of equivalent quality, if they are X2, then they need to be X2.
