Kenwood Chef Gearbox and Electronics Repairs

- In this video, we take a look at a Kenwood Chef I bought new back in 1992. It hasn't had a lot of use, but has developed an irritating habit of dropping oil from the beater receptacle as begun to smell like electrical kit about to blow up... so I attacked it with some tools and sorted it out! For those waiting on car/motorcycle content, I'm completing another video as I type this. Happy new year to all.
Yep. My dad used to be a toolmaker at Kenwoods here in ELizabeth SA. He built mum a A701A model back in 1966ish. Free of charge of course lol. Mum is 87 now and used it last week for a sponge cake. I'll watch your video now. 🙂

Wow, there was a heck of a lot of grease in there. Interesting to see everyday things taken apart. We tend to take them for granted and expect them to just keep working. I bought my wife a different variety of good quality food processor about 25 years ago and it's still going strong. It gets used every few days at least. She loves it. I think she'll be quite upset if it expires... 👍
I quite liked quite a lot of the photo ending, and while there's lots of music in the UA-cam Studio Audio Library - I kind of can't imagine your videos finishing with different music now! :) In any case, enjoy all your variety of items and subjects and I wish you happiness and prosperity in 2023. I got one of these, lent to my old man (an electronics technician) to make sausages about 12yrs ago. It's still sitting under his desk and he ain't filled a casing yet. It had the meat mincer and the sausage filler attachments, I bought it from a chef/cook guy over 25yrs ago for $200. I really need to get it back. the Thermomix takes care of most duties but the real gearbox etc, makes me want to tinker with it.
Thermomix, pretty serious stuff! Yeah these old bangers are very cheap and ultra reliable... the Toyota Corolla of mixers haha, cheers.

yeah the epoxy caps were similar to the ones used in telecom racks back when they had step by step exchanges (stauager type)

Hi Peter - I recently rebuilt ours of about the same vintage - had to replace condensors and resistors on the speed control circuit board - you can buy a kit of these to fix. Symptoms as for yours - electrical burning smell (and smoke). UA-cam is your friend when dismantling it.
“I’ve never worked on one of these…” - then proceeds to dismantle, fix then reassemble like he’s done a hundred!😂
Nice video. Kenwood specified 135 grams of grease for the gearboxes in the service manual. I usually weigh out the correct amount into a clean container, and make sure the bottom half of the gearbox has a good covering as well as the top. I get your point about "too much grease" but the gears are likely to wear more quickly without sufficient coverage. Also it's good to ensure the pinion can be turned relatively easily (there'll be some resistance from the new grease, especially if the gearbox has been filled to the manufacturer's specification) before tightening down the six screws. If necessary back them off and re-tighten them in pairs.
thanks, I have to replace that grease in the same Kenwood. But do I need a special food grade lubricant ?
@@anto8222 EP2 lithium grease in the gearbox, and a smear of food safe grease around the planet hub ring gear.
Ours is a 701a from the late 60s? Built like a brick dunny, Metal casing etc. Weighs a ton.

You're allowed to work on devices as an electronics tech btw. Just have to be deemed competent in mains voltage, which you clearly demonstrate.
Tried having a crack myself repairing the same model but the motor was already far too gone for repairs. This is a detailed and well documented teardown. Managed to get flames out of the old motor watch?v=Uiu1_xblrBQ lol
Thanks for doing this, I'm about to repair one myself if it isn't too far gone, but same symptoms i.e. motor runs OK but smells of burning material and liquid oil dripping out of head. These things look like they were engineered in good old British fashion. Coming from an British Aerospace engineering background myself, it upsets me to see the junk being passed off nowadays as acceptable quality, but then again, I'm just an old moaning b**d engineer now. Subscribed.
I dont want to sound like a winger but you should really only use food grade grease in that final drive over the bowl. A bit of Inox MX6. Even some silicone grease is ok for use as a food grade. My tube of CRC silicone grease says it's ok as a food grade lube, not cheap at $40 a tube but it lasts.

You're probably absolutely correct... I mentioned it to the tech I was getting advice from and he didn't support it, on the grounds that it liquified apparently quite quickly. I have zero experience with it, so I really have no idea to that end. From what I've observed, Kenwood used regular mineral based grease sparingly in the planetary case, which was viewed as acceptable. The issue of separation and leaking seem to originate from the gearboxes, where the separated oil runs down the output shaft and into the planetary hub. From there, I believe it's moved outward centrifugally where it's allowed to drain through the beater fitting. Provided the EP2 lithium grease doesn't separate in the gearbox, all should remain dry - I certainly hope I'm correct, cheers and thanks.

I'm surprised you didn't change the electrolytic cap, those things are almost always the culprits.

Well, when anyone made things of good quality they could be repaired very inexpensively and last literally 100 years... Now we buy new, it breaks soon after the warranty expires, then we discard, because repairs are not economically viable - very environmentally friendly!

I nearly bought the last of the 380 slc models recently but chickened out...... the wife and I had a ball test driving it for a weekend.
My kenwood cheff exell's problem is in the front where the mixers must fit. It keeps on falling out when I use them
at 31:01 How did you get that off? The manual say I have to lock the gear box with a special tool in the slow speed outlet. I have no such tool. I tried holding the drive pinion with large pliers but got no luck with that. The torque just moves the gearbox around. I am having no luck getting to those two screws underneath that nylon cog. You said it was very easy to remove it so I wonder what you did.
I have the Major model km615, which have tx20 screws holding the gearbox together.
Beyond my level of expertise … can anyone recommend a repairer around Newcastle NSW for a KM210 model with the same symptoms … oil drip & slight smell?
I'd strongly suggest you don't use FoodSafe grease inside the gearbox as it lacks the correct lubricating properties. Factory standard was EP2 grease inside (130g), and a dab of food safe in the planetary hub. :D

Y my doughkneeding tool, comes loose while I was working. I tested the k tool and it did so too. Can it be fixed? My machine is 40yrs old
Did it smell like burning newspaper?
If so, it's those "RIFA" style epoxy encapsulated capacitors.
They crack, then the humidity gets into the paper dielectric and they become electrically leaky. This heats the paper and bam, smokeage with a possible touch of fire.
