Thanks very much for this video. My Nan gave me her late 70’s garish orange and brown A901 many years ago and I’ve been using it for sausage making. Last week after making 3 kilos of bangers it started chucking out smoke. Never having soldered anything other than copper plumbing pipes with a blowtorch before I was a bit dubious but thought I’d give it a go anyway. Bought a cheapo soldering iron from Amazon and the kit of components from EBay. An hour later and it’s running like a dream and has nice new feet too.
THank you for this video. My wife went to use her A901 after it had sat on a shelf for a long time and found the kitchen full of smoke! She thought it best to junk the machune, I don't share her views on this sort of problem. So have now found plenty of UK suppliers of the electronic components and watched this video so decision is made to repair. (I have already repaired her Major but that was a simple motor and gearbox replacement although I have kept the old g/b to replace the probably defective diode so giving me a spare.) My only observation prior to performing the job is that i will disconnect the power supply cable. I have the feeling that the task will be less fiddly with that cable out of the way, resoldering is not going to be a significant extra task.
Great video - you did well to sort this in 20 minutes! I have been trying to repair a motor but, despite the usual blown capacitor, the armature had two segments on the commutator which had burnt out due to being clogged up with carbon from the brushes. This had also burnt the ends of the plastic brush holders. I have rebuilt the motor using an armature (which looked okay) and brush holders from another machine I picked up free for parts but, alas, there is far too much sparking at the brushes so I can only assume this armature is also bad. The soldering took me a lot longer than this, mainly because I did de-solder the tags with the aid of a "solder sucker"... the triac in particular was troublesome as the tags had been bent over when the original part was attached and I wanted to ensure there was a "hole" to put each leg through. I was trying to fix up a machine for a friend who was going to chuck it out, so it's a bit disheartening not to have a serviceable motor after spending so much time on it (along with clean and polish of all the other parts and re-greasing/resealing the gearbox). I suppose the lesson for next time is to look at the motor before spending time on the rest!
Thank you so much for making this video. I followed your repair whilst repairing my Kenwood A901 with the smoking speed control. It was also handy to know where to buy the replacement parts too. It's now up and running again 👍.

Great Video - I have a Kenwood Excel which i replaced the Caps, Resisitor and Triac over 10 years ago. Worked fantastic since. A new problem has just started to happen whereby when i start the mixer at low speeds the speed seems to vary up and down a noticable ammount. However when i bring it to full speed it works fine and when returning to low speed, again it works fine. Wondering what you think the problem might be. I had a spare set of brushes and put them in. (more so in hope than thinking it would fix the problem.....It didnt). They are a great mixer and it would be a shame to have to get rid of it...plus get a great kick out of fixing it.

A great and interesting video. I've got a 65 year old A601. One of the few things I brought with me to Thailand 34 years ago.
