the title is more so "half clickbait" in that it is technically the truth, but extremely exaggerated TF2 is not over or shutting down, but simply, in this massive leak, there was no content found that may imply a future update So basically, it's less "tf2 is over" and more so "tf2 official content is very likely over"
@@neevko267 I mean the leak is also of an 8 year old dev repository, no shit it wouldn't contain anything hinting at a new update when it's from before Jungle Inferno lmao
Richter just went for the Fearmongering Clickbait. You don't tag something as "Over" if you aren't implying that something may truly be done in an end of service way. I hope Richter Overtime actively reconsiders redoing some parts of his script and changing the title and thumbnail, because those were suggesting that TF2 would be shut down completely or receive no new updates like bug fixes or even hats.
I've seen so many variations of "TF2 is dead/over" that the words have lost all meaning. And even then, whenever Valve does decide to pull the plug, I firmly believe there's enough of a community to keep the game alive in some capacity, at least for a while.
I was wondering the same thing, how does this leak take TF2 from the half-dead "interns only work on it in their spare time" state to a fully-dead sundown?
It’s hard to see how the game could be practically more dead, aside of shutting down all game servers, closing down the shop and marketplace, and shutting down item and account servers. What changes is only the communitys hope for revival. As in significant development time to fix current issues.
I don't see a reason for valve to ever "pull the plug" on the game as much as nihilist try to have me believe, it's still one of the most played steam games and is unanimously loved and they probably still make money from the cosmetics, they would literally be shooting themselves in the foot to shut it down for a silly reason
Tf2 is over? nah man, this is the best thing that's happened to Tf2 in years. Let's face it, Valve has been done with Tf2 for a while. Now the fans have access to Valve's hidden content for the game. This give so much material for the community to work with, who are actually the ones keeping the game alive, not Valve. If Valve were smart like they used to be, they'd embrace this and allow the community to fully utilize this stuff, cuz they sure as shit weren't going to.
I just have a bad feeling that tf2 is going to die soon. It’s just a feeling I have, but I don’t think tf2 will die anytime soon. The game and characters are just too good. I know I contradicted myself but I just don’t know how to feel.
@@averyjudgementalsoldier8303 tbh, not really, if the community has stayed this big though bots and all, the only way for tf2 to die, is if they shut off servers and even then it will stay alive for a while after that
no bro valve is gonna update tf2 bro just hold out for it bro just wait for it'll definitely happen bro just wait for it bro just one more day bro any second now bro
Saying TF2 is over is kinda clickbaity. Sure we haven't received updates for years, but it's not like an old content leak was the final nail on the coffin. The TF2 community tends to overreact to stuff. How many "tf2 is over" posts are we gonna see now, just because people saw this video? Remember the old Source Code leak? People were legit uninstalling the game because of that, and It was never a threat.
he doesn't mean tf2 is over as in "tf2 is dead now guys time to stop playing", he means tf2 is over as in this is likely the last major drop of any type of content for the game (excluding the minor bug fixes and seasonal updates) unless valve releases a major update or some crazy tf2 beta leak happens or something
Looks like a lot of people are getting way too dramatic over this. If this means that Valve isn't going to allow development on the game anymore, then that sucks, but I don't see any reason as to why that would happen. The biggest content we get is patches and new maps, and although I can't say V script and other neat additions have replacements, the server browser exists for if you want to dig out and find fun servers with custom maps. This also just seems to mean leaked maps and models, which isn't very huge. Sure, people can work off of them, but it doesn't unlock anything really new that we didn't have before other than just a few concepts that Valve was toying with an a picture of a coconut. Mods probably wouldn't be able to get away with using any of it anyways, so the most I see being done with it is having a few things copy and pasted onto the workshop for us to use on community servers or for people to purely draw inspiration from. If you're looking for something that will give us hope to tf3 or tf2 mods or just any tf2 content in general, I'd put a lot more hope into Tf2 Source 2 which is currently being developed on S&box, although the developers for that have slowed down a lot on development for it. On top of all of this, this is only from 2007-2015, so there's no point in saying this is all the possible content Valve has ever made because the newest of this stuff is around 7 years old. Because of this, I think it's perfectly reasonable to still think that Valve one day may decide to possibly release an actual major update, but personally I heavily doubt that.
The best explanation I have gotten as to why people think the game is over is because "no content in the leak is past 2015" which is 1. right before smaller leaks came out in 2016 and Valve greatly tightened security over their games and 2. we got major updates after 2015, so the lack of content from there isn't because Valve isn't doing anything. This leak has just gotten everyone into a tizzy and they aren't thinking all the way.
@@lar8728 Yes, leave it to the TF2 community to think that Valve will take down the 4th most played game on steam that still brings them lots of money.
Bro I'm gonna be honest I don't see how 2015-era developer assets getting leaked is some big depressing thing that means the game is over, like yeah I doubt TF2 is ever going to go back to receiving regular content updates (even if updates of some kind could still happen) but how is getting almost 60+ gigs of assets meant to be a sad event?
As other people have already said, It seems like a huge leap to say that because a leak of a bunch of old pre-Jungle inferno content got leaked that Valve will never make anything with the TF2 IP or that It will never get any more support from them. Personally I can easily see this adding to other projects like pre-fortress or TF2 Classic more than proving that THE GAME IS DEAD NOW 😱
man's still living the delusion that valve cares about tf2 for about 7 years now, i've wondered what the actual fuck valve is doing, because tf2 is practically a gold mine that they're actively trying to ignore as much as possible, unless they get a new director or something BIG happens, there's no way they'd change their ways after so long pretty much the whole community banding together managed to get one guy to do bug fixes here and there we would need like a dozen million people to convince valve to do the bare minimum in terms of fixing the game
I genuinely wonder if the SFM files for the other Meet the Team videos (the ones that aren't included with SFM when you download it) are in there and useable. It'd bring back that weird 2011/2012 era where people would upload modified versions of Meet the Engineer or Meet the Heavy and get tons of views for making silly edits in their spare time.
I joined the valve community at a weird time. My first valve experience was portal in late 2020, but my first step into the real valve community was with me purchasing gmod and hl2. As I collected nearly every valve game into my library, I begun to notice something: It really felt like I had joined during the "beginning of the end," which has its pros and cons. On one hand, I have multiple decades worth of fan content to play through. On the other, everyone in this community constantly talks about how dead it is despite staying in it themselves, and it seems that almost every damn fan project made today is built off at least some layer of nostalgia. The valve community is one built off of memories, ones I don't have, and with this source code leak, I feel that both the pros and cons will strengthen. With all of these leaked files, mountains of new fan content while pour onto the online scene, however at the same time, I'm prepared for endless "WELP BOYS, ITS ALLLL OVER NOW!!!11!!" I dunno, this rant is kind of out of place, but I felt I should spew this all somewhere, and I think a video regarding the biggest leak in Valve history is a good place.
The reason people shout about things being over is that when source codes are leaked, people are able to hack the hell out of their clients to the point of making online play nearly impossible. Imagine the current tf2 bot problem, but the bots can crash you to desktop and delete your files.
i believe i first started playing TF2 when it became free to play, so i do remember the days when TF2 was in a better condition compared to how it is now. basically before a bunch of schizos decided to create bots to try and hurt or possibly even kill TF2 (fuck anyone who does this btw). it does hurt to see TF2 suffering like this, but at least it warms my heart that the community will do what it can to try and help keep the game on it's feet. i feel lucky to be part of a good community like this one.
To say TF2 is “over” (both in the title and during the video) is borderline click bait. We’ve gotten next to nothing for half a decade at this point; the idea that Valve isn’t making anything new, as the leak suggests, changes nothing, and it certainly wont be the end of the game in any way. We’ll still get out bug fixes and cosmetic cases. The servers will keep running. The game will continue to be maintained to the bare minimum standard needed to keep people happy until it no longer generates a profit for Valve which, considering the game recently hit its peak in terms of player count, likely wont be happening for a while.
Clickbait title if you ask me. This is just unused model/material source files leaked from Valve's repository. No code here. Also consider that these repositories have been sanitized and had their security tightened after Tyler McVicker & friends ended up leaking all of that source code a few years back.
But it is quite a substantial leak no? Easily the biggest since the HL2 leak back in 2003. The title isn't inherently wrong and currently this information is incredibly fresh so some of it may be wrong or adjusted. There is no click bait (at least in regards to the leak). It just says massive leak, which this is. Get off your high horse.
@@MiguelHernandez-lo5lg Big leaks mean nothing. Small leaks of upcoming unreleased content would be bad. But GTA 6 is still coming, why the hell would TF2 be hurt by this? They weren't doing anything with what was leaked.

From what I've heard, the leak itself only has contents dating back to 2015 in the latest. No, the leak not having anything that hints to a future update does not confirm that we are not getting an update. In fact, aside from an early version of Mercenary Park (that isn't even jungle-themed) and a Saxton Hale model, there is not even anything about Jungle Inferno in this. I also don't believe that we are getting an major update any time soon, but again, this leak does not confirm it. Team Fortress 2 is not "over".
Valve just putting everything into the communitie's hands at this point, can both be good and bad news depending on how you look at it. It's actually amazing to see this much content from a game without major updates anymore. This really proves how damn strong the community is for this masterpiece of a game.
It’s a bittersweet truth that most TF2 players haven’t been able to accept for the last 3 years. Of course there will always be some players (mainly cause it’s free) but the game just isn’t the same.

I'm not really sure how this confirms that Valve is never doing anything Team Fortress related again. People said that about Half-Life when Marc Laidlaw wrote his Epistle 3 "fanfiction" but that obviously wasn't true.
It's literally just a leak of all of TF2's blueprints & A to Z. This literally doesn't mean shit other than the community having more official assets, which is a good thing since we havent had a proper update for more than half a decade.
Valve probably wouldn't care about the potentially new fan made games anyways, youtubers placed the TF Logo on their merch, what makes this any different
Funny, just a few days ago I looked at the TCRF page for TF2, and looked at the few repo leaks that had happened over the years of various models, textures, and a few map screenshots. Something tells me they now have a _loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot_ of work to do now...
the line implying that the only hope for us to ever see the final comic is to see the script being leaked is so sad. I've found the tumblr o one of the artists, apparently all of them desperately want to finish the comic, but Valve just won't let them.
the same thing works with gta san andreas, even after almost 2 decades people still play it. sure, with mods, but its still alive thanks to the community

I really hope valve sees this and goes “well shit, cats out of the bag, might as well release some of this stuff.” Although this is probably wishful thinking.
I don't really understand why this leak means that TF2 is over? Like I'm well aware that the game will likely never get a new update and I only digest small dosages of copium, but I don't understand why this leak specifically indicates that TF2, for sure, will never get another update
TF2 is essentially run by the community since 2015. A leak like this will do nothing but allow people to be more creative given the new assets. As a map maker myself I would love to go through all the bsp files to learn more about how to improve my own maps, and I am sure all the models will surely be helpful to those who create SFM animations!
I feel blessed to have grown up in a time where I could experience the TF2 community. The game, the memes, the SFM shorts both official and fanmade... it was wild. Probably the greatest video game community of all time.
bro said "was" even if this was the "death of tf2" or "the last official tf2 content," which it sure as hell isn't, the community would live on. There is literally no way this could kill the community, even if valve shut down the game and took down every fan game it would keep going.
hey guys, tf2 player from a year in the future. tf2 isn't dead yet, in fact it's the healthiest it's ever been (for now) since like 2014. as a wise man once said, it's not over till it's over.
I have an idea: You know how there are people who play chess with real people as the pieces? I want to get 31 or 33 more players that all own the chess hat, hop into a server with them on that chess map at 3:34, level their hats to be the chess pieces needed, and have two players play against each other. I need to do this.
This video is just clickbait. The game is still alive and with a considerable amount of players for a 15 year game. Yes, this leak can be a problem for Valve, but it is not the end of the game. Actually, the community has the tools to create more content for the game, and i'm not talking about SFM animation, art, memes, etc, but about the game itself. Valve gave us the tools to create more maps, game modes, hats and even new guns (which are only available on community servers, sadly). So yeah, we are closer to have the fate of the game on our hands. By the way, for all those who thinks that the game will die without Valve's servers in a possible shutdown, there are games like Battlefield Heroes. There are a bunch of hardcore fans of the game that still play that game which official servers have been down since 2015, and, although EA is still taking down their unofficial servers under the excuse of "giving a chance to newer games", that community is still alive. Not as well known as TF2's community but alive in the end. So, the game will be still there for us while the community keep it alive.
Hold on, isn't this all just old stuff though? You can't leak stuff from the future, obviously. Why are people treating this as some sort of conclusive proof of TF2 no longer being developed? Not that I thought that it'd get any more major updates, really. But I don't see how this changes anything. It's just a cool leak of some pre Jungle Inferno stuff.
TF2 isn't over, self-described zoomer. The fact fans have the asset sources means it's actually just begun. Valve development on TF2 has basically been on "life support only" for years. Hell, this isn't even the last time we got a repo leak: @shounic has been making TF2 source code vids for a while after repeated source code leaks from 2015 and 2017 went public. We get thrown a random update or patch every so often by Valve, since that time. People already do total conversion mods like Open Fortress and TFClassic: this leak just means some group of similarly-minded "nerds of the Valve community" will probably just do a clean room re-implementation of TF2 based on source, models, and assets, at this point. The reason nobody at Valve is making new TF2 code or assets is because: (1) Valve's internal development organizational structure means teams self-assemble to deal with issues (there are no managers-- people wheel desks together to create ad-hoc committees.) last we heard in 2021 or so, Harrison Stonebridge was the only remaining dev was actually interested in maintaining the code, he had 2-3 part time devs contributing, and they were all encouraged to work on other projects (2) TF2's code base (Source in general) is not sustainable and has needed a re-write for a long time, hence life-support. If you have the source code for TF2, and you have the models and rigs for TF2, it means you can re-engineer the game from scratch under an open source licence with friends, and essentially hard-fork a game Valve obviously does not want to maintain any more.
I feel bad that Alaxe spent so much work creating a near accurate version of the spellcaster quarterly witch's model just for the actual model to get leaked a few months later

@rocketfellertf2 what do you mean, don't you know all niko pfps share a single consciousness
I've seen so many variations of "TF2 is dead/over" that the words have lost all meaning. And even then, whenever Valve does decide to pull the plug, I firmly believe there's enough of a community to keep the game alive in some capacity, at least for a while.
First time I heard "this game is dead" was about two years after its release. So, what? About 16 years ago? Some of you weren't even alive then.
@@catcatcatcatcatcatcatcatcatca The game is still getting active patches, so it's at least two degrees removed from dead by your measurement
Yeah, Valve didn't even fix the bot problem.

For real, leave it to the TF2 community to overdramatize anything regarding the game.

This is the 12th occurrence over "game-ending news" I've heard "TF2 is dead" within the 14 years I've spent playing this game.
Personally I can easily see this adding to other projects like pre-fortress or TF2 Classic more than proving that THE GAME IS DEAD NOW 😱
Didn't those projects go on hiatus because Valve was in talks with them?
man's still living the delusion that valve cares about tf2
for about 7 years now, i've wondered what the actual fuck valve is doing, because tf2 is practically a gold mine that they're actively trying to ignore as much as possible, unless they get a new director or something BIG happens, there's no way they'd change their ways after so long

I joined the valve community at a weird time. My first valve experience was portal in late 2020, but my first step into the real valve community was with me purchasing gmod and hl2. As I collected nearly every valve game into my library, I begun to notice something:
It really felt like I had joined during the "beginning of the end," which has its pros and cons.
Same, thought thankfully my foray into Valve started around 2014.
Same I started playing valve games in 2020 and its kind of confusing hearing all of these nostalgic comments because Ive never experienced it myself
i believe i first started playing TF2 when it became free to play, so i do remember the days when TF2 was in a better condition compared to how it is now. basically before a bunch of schizos decided to create bots to try and hurt or possibly even kill TF2 (fuck anyone who does this btw). it does hurt to see TF2 suffering like this, but at least it warms my heart that the community will do what it can to try and help keep the game on it's feet. i feel lucky to be part of a good community like this one.
I'm pretty sure I played half life and sven coop before I knew how to read, to say these games are bathed in nostalgia is an understatement

I have an idea:
You know how there are people who play chess with real people as the pieces? I want to get 31 or 33 more players that all own the chess hat, hop into a server with them on that chess map at 3:34, level their hats to be the chess pieces needed, and have two players play against each other. I need to do this.

They leaked like 2015 TF2 dev stuff, nothing newer
“TF2 is kinda over”
The community: “we’ll see about that” *gman voice*
This guy's just clickbaiting
I feel like this will actually do the opposite, now people will want to keep TF2 alive out of sheer power
Valve : **won't update the game*
Janitor, plant, TF2 community : *"Fine, we'll do it ourselves"*
I feel like with the updated v-script support, who ever is still working on TF2 had to have seen this coming
