Randy Newman wrote this about the Los Angeles music/party scene in the 1960s. The narrator is a sheltered young man encountering his first wild party complete with marijuana, whiskey, and lots of other things he's never seen before. He's sorry he didn't listen when his mama told him not to come.
The Three Dog Night Story, 1964-1975 states that vocalist Danny Hutton's girlfriend, actress June Fairchild (best known as the "Ajax Lady" from the Cheech and Chong movie Up In Smoke) suggested the name after reading a magazine article about indigenous Australians, in which it was explained that on cold nights they would customarily sleep in a hole in the ground while embracing a dingo, a native species of wild dog. On colder nights they would sleep with two dogs and, if the night were freezing, it was a "three dog night".
Back in the day, "whiskey in your water" or "high ball" meant a mix of an amphetamine and an opioid. So, an upper and a downer together. It had other names like "up-down" and "inside-out." Putting sugar in your tea meant to sprinkle some THC crystals in with your weed to give it an extra kick. "Sugar" was also a name for LSD. Not that I know anything about such things....
The name is taken from a meaning in Australia. The colder the night, the more the dogs need to keep warm while sleeping hence the name, three dog night. Three original singers of the band.
@@laurier8131 In northern Canada too. There are dogs and dogsleds. If you are out at night and it's cold You sleep with the dogs. They keep you from freezing to death.
I think that the reference to sugar probably implies LSD or in common vernacular "acid" that came in the form of a sugar cube. All kinds of things were going on at parties in the 60's and 70's that he would not have seen before. Fun song. Great band and lead singer. Good reaction. Cheers from Canada
I heard the name came from cold regions where folk travel across the snow on dog sleds. On a cold night you slept with a dog up next to you to keep you warm. A really cold night was called a 3 Dog Night. Much love to you Doc. If you will, Please check out "Easy to be Hard", "Black and White" and "One". I love this band, so many great songs. Thank you
The bands name came from years back . A chilly night was a one dog night meaning you only needed one dog in bed with you. A colder night was a two dog night. Even colder a three dog night!
Whisky and water is called a High Ball. This was because it used to be that the express trains that were directed on which tracks to take by a ball on a stick would be raised for express trains or lowered for locals. The express trains would scream through the stations without slowing down. The rapid speed at which the bartenders at bars in train stations (they used to be common) could pour a bourbon whiskey and water--a popular call in those days--brought about its name, the High Ball.
That reaction to, "Don't turn on the lights 'cause I don't wanna see," a smile of recognition, hands over face. This is a man who has been to that party! lol
Original lyrics on the record were "I seen so many things I ain't never seen before I don't know what it is, I don't wanna see no more" and not "somebody shut that door." He changed them for some reason...
LOVE the music of Three Dog Night! Their music was the backdrop for my early high school years. This particular song is on my Top 10 Favorite of All Time. Has a different sound than anything I've ever heard.
YES, Three Dog Night !!! I have been waiting to see reactions from this incredible band ❤️ 💚 💙 💜 They are fun, funky, & meaningful lyrics in a lot of their songs....a few that come to mind, are Black & White, Never been to Spain, & Joy to the World!!!
This live version is so different from the album version. I had never heard "...somebody shut that door!" before. I also recommend "Never Been to Spain" by 3-dog Night. Very groovy jam! 👍👍🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯🍻
If you are living off the grid in the wilderness in the winter, the cabin gets cold fast after sundown. The thing that keeps you warm is snuggling with your dog. If it's the coldest part of winter, you won't be comfortable unless you snuggle with three dogs.
I was living in columbia, south carolina, 1973....got to see them at the columbia Colosseum when they came out with "jeramiah was a bullfrog." No shit, the tickets were $4.50.......four dollars fifty cents!!!!!
The name Three Dog Night is actually an Intuit Indian (Eskimo) term. When it's cold enough to sleep with three dogs, to keep warm, that's a very cold night. And yeah another version is that the Aborigines in Australia used to do that too. But convincing a wild Dingo to sleep with them seems a stretch and alot of fighting. I'm in inclined to believe it was the Eskimos and their domesticated sled dogs.
Three Dog Night did a string of the best songs of the 70s. Funny thing, they're all wonderful, but they don't sound all alike the way most artist' songs do. You gotta hear them all. One of my fave bands.
This group has a bunch of great ones. Many are just fun, like this one; others have a more serious tone. If you're interested in a serious song, check out, One. Another fun one is, Joy to the World.
Three Dog Night did not compose most of their hit songs themselves. They were not song writers. This song was written by Randy Newman, who wrote many hit songs for many artists as well as TV shows and jingles. But, where they lacked in song writing skill, they made up for it as great musicians and vocalists. Their drummer, Floyd Sneed, was a founding member and a rare sight as a black man in a 60’s/70’s era rock band.
I believe it’s the Russians but it could be the Eskimos of Alaska they use to huddle up with their sled dogs Wayback in the day to stay warm and if it was a three dog night that meant it was very very cold
Use your imagination man!..The song is probably about a young man that’s going to a wild party and has never done it before and he’s being exposed to something brand new this is a hell of a jam especially the studio version
I was the 39th like on your video & it reminded me of the song 39 from Queen & I can’t remember if you’ve reacted to it or not. If not, you should! It’s another great one! Love this song too! 🤘❤️
People back in the day we’re poor and they put water in their whiskey when they couldn’t afford Coke or another mixer to Go with it My parents use to do it

Actually it's Alaskan not Australian
@@ameyer1970, it was a term used by Australian aborigines. So, maybe they say it in Alaska too?

@@maureenwagg5305 very interesting. That's so cool. So much history behind some of or most band names really.
@@laurier8131 I heard it was Australian aborigines, too. A particular cold night, then take another dog=3

His first time in a wild party. Sugar= Acid, funny cigarette= a blunt. This guy is freaking out with seeing this for the first time.

"Shambala", "Out In The Country", "One", "Black and White" "Family of Man", "Eli's Coming", "Easy To Be Hard", "One Man Band", "The Show Must Go On"
I was six in 1970. Used to sing "joy to the world" in the bathtub.😊
Sugar = acid. Momma told me not to come, That ain't the way to have fun, son. I've seen things i've never seen before = acid. ☮️
Yeah... Liquid LSD soaked into sugar cubes.
Joy to the world
Another vote for listening to "Joy to the World".
Ahhhh..... the 70's. We all went to that party!
"Sugar in your tea", a reference to sugar cubes laces with LSD.
Three Dog Night-One. You won’t be disappointed

A 3 dog night refers to an Alaskan sled dog saying if it’s cold it takes 3 dogs to keep you warm.

My favorite favorite favorite from them is Never Been To Spain. Do look groovy.
Never been to Spain was written by the late Hoyt Axton. Joy to the world one of his too. He also acted. He was very talented.
You have GOT to listen to never been to Spain by three dog night... it's my favorite song by them and if you liked this one you should love it too!

Whiskey and water and sweet tea...big Southern things. The songwriter Randy Newman is from New Orleans
It was a reference to the Australian natives, who slept with their dingo dogs to keep warm...a very cold night was a Three Dog Night....

C'mon Man, MORE 3 Dog Night!! Pick a song, they have many and not a dud between 'em.
3 dog night is an old Australian saying for a cold night. It means the night is cold enough that you have to sleep with 3 dogs to keep warm.
Great chair dancing 😄 Love this band. This is my high school jam! (one of many)
It's the way to express how cold it is, 3 dog night, cold
Three Dog Night is an Eskimo term where they sleep with three dogs around them to keep them warm at night.
They had some crazy ass parties in 1970. Just saying.
When its so cold you have to sleep with three dogs to keep warm!!!😂
Love 3 dog night ❤️
You got to think...70s......pot,
acid, anything and everything going on...
" if it feels good , do it"
The singer with the big mustache died of a heroin OD in later years. Momma told him not to come!
There have been many things that have happened in 2020, that I have never seen before.
Underrated comment of 2020! 💯💯👊🍻
The colder you are, the more dogs you sleep with!
Gotta come with "Love Rollercoaster" by Ohio Players after catching the reaction to this.
Gerry Rafferty "Baker Street"
The Duprees "You Belong To Me"
