BJ is right. It’s talking about any party we attended in high school or college. 😂🎶
when they said put some sugar in my tea, they would take an eye dropper, and put a couple of drops of lsd on the sugar cube,.
@@lawrencekohman7444, I didn’t know that. Wow.
@@lawrencekohman7444 And unless I am way off base... the smell of stale perfume ..... that was the smell of smoking "black-tar" opium back in the day.... at least as far as I remember.
You got that right
@@lawrencekohman7444 not cool, not a fan of acid. Took 2 trips that I had not planned
Every song this band did was fantastic...
Can't go wrong with Three Dog Night..
Edgar Winters "They only come out at night" is another great album from about the same time. Every song on that one was amazing. Remember "Just Hangin' Around"?
Most def. Even over several decades, they're one of the few that I've never tired of. They never lessen. #talent
@@rubbersole79 excellent album, indeed. I especially liked, "Alta Mira"...
@@lisarainbow9703 Heeeyyyyyyy!!! A fellow fan! Dang few of us left!
@@rubbersole79 I will be 76 next month...and I love Three Dog Night... I live in such a cold part of the USA...that we have three dog nights almost every night from late fall through spring...for real!!
Three Dog night is probably THE most under rated band of the 70's they had so many hits, its baffling to me how many people have heard the songs and couldn't name the band to save their lives.
Gotta agree.
Sold more records than any other band in the '70s. Most of their early stuff was very soulful - did a righteous cover of "Eli's Coming"
I don't think they were under rated, no way!! They were played and loved as much as all the great bands of the time. :)
Yes.
The first album I ever asked my mom to buy for me!!
BJ is right!!! Great reaction to a great band that I grew up on. “One”, “Joy to the World”, “Eli’s Coming”, and “Never Been To Spain” will show you their range of talent! Look for their live performances.
Asia, I feel you on the allergies!
✌🏼❤️🎶
Don't forget "shambala"
I would've been named Eli after Eli's Coming. Instead I was a girl, so I'm Sara after Sara Smile by Hall & Oats 🥰
@@Sara.7272 my daughter is also Sarah! I was a named after Annette Funicello from the original Mouseketeers.
They used to put drops of LSD onto a cube of sugar … Great musicianship and even greater harmonized singing.
As my Daddy used to say, before he left this cold, cruel world: ''Too many people who like to sow their wild oats every night, find themselves praying for a crop failure in the morning.''
Sounds EXACTLY like a High School party! You nailed it!!! 1976!
Same here!!!!!!
I was in high school when this song came out so my friends & I were all kind of living it as we were hearing it everywhere.👀
Three Dog Night was one of the biggest selling & most popular bands of the early 70's. So many hits! Check out "Black & White"..."Shambala"..."Celebrate"..."Easy To Be Hard"..."Never Been To Spain" ..."Old-fashioned Love Song"...can't go wrong with any of 'em! Having 3 great singers who changed it up singing lead let them vary the types of songs they did. Just terrific.💙☮

I had missed it. Thanks for the link!💙
@@deborahcornell171 you're welcome!
I also liked Danny Hutton’s “Liar”...
@@corinnepmorrison1854
Yes! I love that one too! Every time I've ever listened to it I always wish it was longer.☮
I'm afraid you might be wrong Asia. We always took it to be a REAL party.
The origin of the phrase "three dog night" is saying it's so cold we'll need 3 dogs to sleep on the bed keeping us warm. They used that name for the band because they had 3 lead singers. -Each had a different style, so the band had many different sounds.
Originated in Australia...with the native, aboriginal people... They slept on the ground...no beds...
@@corinnepmorrison1854 Correct Corinne!!
@@Vulkus We had an Australian Shepherd...and I went online to find Aboriginal words for “dog”... I named our precious dog, Keli... I hope I was correct on that, too...
Today would have been Keli’s 15th birthday... I really miss him...❤️🙏🏻🐾
@@corinnepmorrison1854 Sounds like you really miss Keli. I went and had a look at dog breeds online and did not know we do have a breed called Australian shepherd. And it was developed in California in the 1900s from some of the local breeds like Collie and Kelpie back here in Oz. Amazing!! Thanks for teaching me something today Corinne
@@Vulkus You are welcome, my friend!!
Yes, I really miss Keli.... He was a sweetheart!! ❤️🐾
You are correct my brother, i am almost 70 and grew up listening to this song, and yes it was soon WILD all throughout the 70's😊😊😊
Asia/BJ, 3 lead singers in this 70s hit machine! Their "Joy To The World", "Shambala", "Never Been To Spain", "An Old Fashioned Love Song" and "Eli’s Coming" are next for you!! The harmonies!
Yeah ... um, Asia... BJ is definitely on target with the kind of 70s party this song is describing.
The live version is fun too - must watch. Yup, BJ is correct! Lol
Hey! What a GREAT fun group They featured three awesome lead singers. Drug problems plagued them like many groups of the time.
My parents had this album when I was really young and I remember thinking how funny the song is 😂; I like it more with each decade😊
Love these guy's so much!! 😍 they have so many great voices in this band. Eli's coming is my favorite but you guy's must watch them live! ✌🍀
Love this band. Love this song. I don't usually like a live version over a studio version. But there is a great live video performance of this song and you should check it out.
Randy Newman was one of the best songwriters America has ever produced, And Three Dog Night did a great cover of it!
I did not know he wrote this. Thanks.
@@s.mcpherson6354
Newman wrote this in 1966 originally for Eric Burdon of The Animals. The Burdon version didn't really do anything. It was this version by Three Dog Night that became the worldwide hit 4 years later in 1970.
So many people have no idea about how Randy Newman wrote this and so many other varied hits...including iconic Disney movie tunes.
@@unclebobunclebob
Like Toy Story. (You've got a friend in me).
@@gregrambo606 exactly.
One of my favorite bands from the 70's. "Out in the Country" is one my favorite of their tunes.
Great song! Great reaction!
Moral of the story- Mama knows best.
Listen to Mama.
BJ is right. Stale perfume, aka weed, is what the singer is talking about. I saw this group back in the 70's. They put on a great show. Most of the band got into drugs, but the lead singer Corey Wells never did. That's what makes this song so funny. And what a voice he had. One of the best singers.
This song was written by Randy Newman who also wrote "You've Got A Friend IN Me" for the movie Toy Story.
Check out Magic carpet ride. Steppenwolf
THIS^^^^^^
Great reaction!!! You HAVE to watch the live version from the 70's. Lotsa soul in this song
Randy Newman wrote this for Eric Burdon and 3 dog night did this cover .... way more popular.
Terrific group with basically 3 lead voices.
I didn't know that. Super cool! Thanks
Great band who in a 5 year span sold more records than anyone else!
1970 when this song came out, they couldn’t say drugs in your tea they had to say cigarettes not marijuana. You have to realize they had sensors back then, if you talked about drugs your song would not get on the radio
The song came out in 1966 with "The Animals". It is this cover of it that was released in 1970.
Ok, you two. I've got a dance club one hit wonder for you. It made it's impressive debut in 1978 and made a permanent dent in the disco scene for Alicia Bridges. The song is I LOVE THE NIGHTLIFE. I can see you guys bopping and bouncing in your seats to this tune all day. Enjoy.
This was one of my favorite bands when I was in high school. BJ is right….this was back in the days of black lights and psychedelic everything. What a time to be a kid! I really enjoy your reactions. Thanks for reacting to this band and my favorite band of all time, Queen.
Love Three Dog Night. I have their greatest hits on my playlist. Great reaction.
Three Dog Night is an American-Irish rock band from the 60's-70's. This band had a lot of energy. They had 3 guys with great voices that could all sing lead vocals. Hope you check out some more of their music. Some other great songs are "One", "Just An Old fashioned Love Song", Eli's Coming", Shambala", "Mama Told Me Not To Come", "Joy To The World", "Try A Little Tenderness", "Never Been To Spain", "Easy To Be Hard", "The Show Must Go On" etc.
Mama Told Him Not To Go,, But He Went Anyway & Found Out Mama Was Right.
As always!!
LOVE Three Dog Night ! Please react to "Black and White", "Shambala", "I Never Been to Spain", "Joy to the World"(Jeremiah was a bullfrog).
💙🥳💕🔥
One of my older brothers turned me on to Three Dog Night way back in the mid 70s. Been listening ever since!
Three Dog Night had a ton of excellent songs in the 70's. Shambala was always one of my favorites but I cant think of a bad song they did. It was ALL good!
"One" would laugh and nod during this song as "one" uh, passed a funny smelling cigarette around. Hahaha
There are so many songs to choose from with Three Dog Night... one that very few know about is "It's For You"... awesome song that shows their amazing harmonic abilities
This is a awesome song!!! Three Dog Night was the first musical act to have the first #1 hit on the debut show of American Top 40 with Casey Kasem back on July 4th weekend of 1970. They had two more #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart of the early 1970s.
I remember seeing them about 20 years ago, I think, they sang this song first verse and chorus dressed up in "Rapper Bling" and said they were one of the first rappers lol. then they sang it right, I got to go backstage with them and hang out for about 2 hours, they were an absolute Joy to be around. Thank you, its a memory Ill Never Forget.
Love Corey's voice. Listen the early version of the group Try A Little Tenderness. 7 member group with 3 lead singers, each took lead depending on the song.
The theme is about a man at a wild party...and his Mama Told Him Not To come. Each verse features Cory Wells talking about wild and crazy happenings at the party. Mama said that ain't the way to have fun...NO! That ain't the way to nave fun NO! 🤣 It's funny and funky!
Being a "Hippie" in the 60's, I can tell you that "Sugar in your Tea" was a drop of LSD infused in a Sugar Cube.
This song was released 1970 so it was a party with all kinds of fun items at the time
This song was actually released in 1966. This is a 1970 cover, though Tom Jonse's cover is better.
"Out In The Country" is the song that i only knew from the lyrics (before the breathing air is gone, before the sun is just a bright spot in the nighttime). Took my 5 year old Daughter to see them in '88 when they were just doing free gigs at fairs and the audience got out their lighters and held them up when they started playing Out In The Country. You do a deep dive with them because of all the great songs they did.
Guys would sing this aloud when played at a kegger Asia, BJ is all over it!! 😂 Like an anthem!! 🥳
Awesome group with a great catalog, dive in!! 👍🏽❤
Songfacts®:
This was written by Randy Newman, the nephew of Academy Award-winning composer Lionel Newman. The song is about a party that left a "bad taste" in the writer's mouth. The drug scene was new to American middle-class youth at that time.
In a 2017 interview with Rolling Stone, Randy Newman explained: "It's a guy going to a party, and he's a little scared. The first line ("Will you have whiskey with your water or sugar with your tea") was a vague connection to acid. I don't remember being thrown off by that stuff then. If I was that unsophisticated - which is possible - I wouldn't admit it."
Corey Hart sang this great song, Chuck Negron and Danny Hutton shared singing duties. All 3 great singers. Glad they were inducted into Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. Sure deserved it. Did a cover of Try a Little Tenderness by Otis Redding, it's fabulous.
Cory Wells you mean. Corey Hart wears sunglasses at night.
May 2023, just got tickets to see Three Dog Night in Sept. Good rock doesn't get old.
As with most Newman songs, he assumes a character; in this song the narrator is a sheltered and extraordinarily straitlaced young man, who recounts what is presumably his first "wild" party in the big city, is shocked and appalled by marijuana smoking, whiskey drinking, and loud music, and - in the chorus of the song. The lyrics represent a man or boy who is learning to find his own way in life away from his mother. The song is directly written about Hetfield's difficult relationship with his mother, who died of cancer when he was 16 years old 👍🏻🤩🏴
Whiskey in your water, sugar in your tea. Love Three Dog Night. Thanks for bringing back the memories of my youth.
Love this 3 Dog Night version!
This is a cover of Randy Newman's song. The Toy Story "You Got a Friend in Me" song guy.
Oh, remember in high school when you snuck home drunk and got the spinning bed? And what did you say?
"Oh God, get me through this and I swear I'll never drink again!"
But then...
Three dog night!!! Best 70's band!!
I saw them in 1975 in Central Park at Schaeffer Music Festival. Crazy fun concert.
They were so good but really underrated. “Never Been To Spain”, "One”, or “Joy to the World”, as well as "Shambala"
Awesome jam! was there when it came out..... Then lived the lyrics.... Never went back to parties like that ever again. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
So happy to see you cover this group. Most reactors are totally missing them and they are a huge part of our musical memories.
Wow, what a fantastic band.
This band was NEVER underrated. From 1969-1974 they sold more records, concert tickets and had more top 10 hits than any band IN THE WORLD..........................FACTS.
I always took this song as a commentary on the huge difference between generations. 1970--psychedelics were the "thing" with the "you can't trust anyone over 30" crowd.
What? watch! The 1975 concert version or the 1972 concert version! You cant appreciate 3 D N without watching them. They are my favorite band, ever, next to the Beatles!!!
If you have seen Toy Story, Randy Newman wrote this song and wrote and sang "You Got a Friend in Me". Also the theme to the show "Monk" about the odd crime solver played by Tony Shalhoub.
Just saw Danny and his band. Great experience.
Let the Show Go On, is really a weird fun song and Shambala is their best one. I was very young when this group was popular, but glad I was around for that era.
ah, yes...1967 was about some of those parties for sure...and we didn't worry about the back rooms, the living room was just fine!
I saw them in concert about 25 years ago in Novi, Michigan. Great show.
No. Not underrated. Great 70s band. Big hits. Very cool! It’s 2022: so many us can still remember every word and sing along. How many bands can say that? It was the best era for rock. Just enjoy!!
That was the era of some very wild wild parties.... Where anybody could be there and anything could happen, and probably did happen...
BJ is totally right: This song has nothing to do with "cigarettes" (Which is pot) or "sugar n tea" (either THC or Acid).
These are drug references.
Many songs in the 60's and 70's referenced drugs with symbolic references like that.
For example, "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" by the Beatles has always been thought of as about LSD, even though John Lennon denied it.
Either way, BJ is spot on this time, and Asia saw the light by the end of the song.😄
Great reaction!!!❤❤❤
Same thing with "Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite." Overflowing with drug references.
My Mom and all my friends moms were A+ in my life. It been 25 years ago I lost my mom... Miss her everyday.
I saw Three dog Night at the Cotton bowl, summer of 1969. It was great I was 14 yrs. Texas here.🇺🇸🙏🏼
Still love these guys today. Thank you Asia & BJ for playing this one. It was cool. ;-) ;-) ;-)
Three Dog Night were so big back in the day! They had lots of Hits! They were my first concert and I had a crush on Chuck Negron one of the singers 😁
I was young and the 70's was fun. great music. love ya guys
I actually like this version better than their live video. It’s good to though. Oh yea, BJ’s right.
Seen dog late 70s. My favorite dog song is never been to Spain. The king also sang never been to Spain. TX
Somehow I totally missed this song back in the day, but heard it decades later. Love it - always listen to your mama about matters like these. :) Thank you for your great reaction!
This was written by Randy Newman. Same guy that did, "I Love LA", "You've Got A Friend In Me", and so many other great hits.
Three Dog Night, "The Show Must Go On." ✌️
50 ways to leave your lover is a good song by Paul Simon.
I know the motor home driver for the current 3 Dog Night band and got the opportunity to see them live a couple of years ago in a theater outside of Columbus Ohio.Danny Hutton was so nice and they sounded so great. We got to go backstage and meet the band.Never thought that I would one day meet them in person.Actually,my first album I ever bought was a 3 Dog Night album.I've gotten to hear so many stories about the band through this friend of mine and was amazed at some of the things this friend of mine has told me.
Saw them a few years back and they turned this song into a rap. It was great. Loved Three Dog Night my whole life since back in the 70s when they were fresh.
These guys were everywhere in the late 60s and they had three lead singers
Ahhhh... high school in the 70s. Been there, done that, got all the stories about those parties. 3 Dog Night was so hot back then, No bad songs either.
I am listening to your reaction. I always enjoy them. Hi from Maryland. I love this song
Out in the country, Liar, Eli’s coming. Especially the live version of Eli.
I saw them in concert when I was in high school, and they put on a SHOW!!!
Another drug related song written by Hoyt Axton. Check out Steppinwolf's "Snow Blind Friend" , The Pusher" or Ringo Starr's "No No Song" Two songs he wrote that I know of that weren't about drugs were 3 Dog Night's "Joy To the World" & "Never Been To Spain"
BJ was spot on with this. 🍻🙏
My advice is to go down the rabbit hole that is Three Dog Night!!!!
They getting blasted!!! Man, I miss those 70s sometimes. Grew up in the 70s. Lot of great music! And this song is one of them. You all keep them coming!😎✌️✊
1st 45 I bought. ... great drummer Floyd Snead ...
Can't Lose with Three Dog Night. It's not sugar. Lol🤠🇺🇸🐎🥩
Guyz! Go drop a dime on a ticket to their current tour!!! You WILL NOT be disapointed! There will be NO "auto-tune", pitch-correction, or ANTERIAS......These guys STILL do the vocals BAREFOOT! I've been in the mixer pit, and there's NOTHING, except for EQ, delay, reverb, ect....the normal kit for vocals...or...should say: the normal kit for 70s 80s, normal kit now adayz has so many voice synthizers that its just stupid! Without all that computer chit, 80%, or more, of the current acts couldnt sell a recird, much less fill a stadium...
These guys; 3 DOG NIGHT, are the REAL deal!!
High school parties of the 60s: beer, chips & onion dip, whiskey, cola, grass, Sara Lee Frozen Chocolate Cake and at least three or four kids tripping.
Three Dog Night are among the gods of Rock n' Roll. They are one of my all-time favorite band. Sugar in your tea means Cocain in your tea. I want you guys to react to "One Man Band" and "Liar" by Three Dog Night....the audio version. It's longer. And thanks for taking my request!!!!
Actually, “sugar in your tea” is a drug reference but it could mean any drug of the day, including cocaine, acid, uppers, downers, etc.
They songs were Sooo huge!!
The Song was written by Randy Newman after having a bad experience at a Party.
After 3DN made it a HUGE Hit, Newman reportedly called Singer Cory Wells and said "I just want to thank you for putting my kids through college”.
Another I was listening to at around 6 years old.. AGAIN..I just love the music and listened to whatever people’s records I could my hands on.🤭😂 Country, disco and all!! 🤷🏻♀️ loved me a groove VERY early on- 💖👍🤘🏼
