As a baseball pitch and a pretty successful batter i can tell you that a batter being able to hit a ball isn't just about the brain, it involves instinct and muscle memory while your brain makes that last second decision on whether to swing or not. In terms of reflex reaction, as Ted Williams said, "hitting a fastball is the most difficult thing to do." I'd say that evading an Ali jab must have been right up there!
Depends on how you define "strike". Do you mean a pitch that is within the strike zone? Or do you mean a pitch that results in the umpire calling "strike", without respect to the pitch's location?
The more they see a pitcher, the more intricate things they pick up. Gwynn was one of the earliest guys who revealed how they studied pitchers back in the 80's, and why he won so many batting titles back then. He used to use VHS tapes of the pitchers to study their motion, their release point, how the balls moved, etc, and it paid off, he won multiple batting titles.
Yeah, i have tendonitis in my elbow. It really sucks because i pitched for 7 years and now this is my 9th year and i havent pitched for 2 years. You really need to be cautious on how hard and what type of pitch you do.
Blanket statements like “pitchers shouldn’t throw as hard” and “pitcher should throw less breaking balls” are bad. Different pitches and pitch speeds are going to be more stressful or less stressful on a given pitcher due to their distinct physiology. And the fastball puts the most stress on the arm compared to breaking balls an offspeed pitched
Robin Roberts said, "You could go up there with a howitzer, a good fastball hitter is going to hit your fastball." What made Feller, Koufax, etc, so effective was the complemented the fastball with a really good curveball. So if, as a batter, you're "Looking," for one, you'll NEVER hit the other. And you HAVE to be looking for the fastball.
I bet u could get that exact set up for 10,000 with eye tracking tech and much better graphics and frame rate/ refresh rate and u could probably get it on the WISH app
The fastest pitcher of all time was almost certainly Steve Dalkowski, an early 60s minor leaguer who was thought to throw about 110. Nolan Ryan later in his career could touch 100 mph. Early in his career looking at video he was NOTICABLY faster. 105-plus and possibly closer to 110. But it's tough to really know for pitchers pre-1980. Feller, Koufax, Walter Johnson, guys like that probably topped out at 95. But usually lived in the low 90s to save on wear and tear. What made Ryan unique was how long and how many innings he could throw at those speeds.
They did the math Johnson was said to throw 93-95. Bob was said to throw 105. And Ryan 107. So Steve was said to throw faster them them all. Also good to note johnson was a side arm pitcher, typically side arms throw slower.
Thing about Johnson is he could throw another 5 to 8 mph faster but his fastball would straighten out and he would get rocked so while he could have been a career 100mph pitcher it would have been short and unsuccessful. Now Ryan was rare in that he could throw as fast as he could possibly throw and his fastball still had movement never straightening out like most pitchers
Oh and by the way Sid Finch a short time minor leaguer slash beer distribution salesman according to Sports Illustrated in the 80's was known for throwing 115 mph he just didn't want to i guess look it up.
I watched the game when Aroldis Chapman threw that 105mph fastball. The announcers were gushing about it, but failed to mention that it was a foot outside and two feet high. His catcher had to jump up awkwardly to get it. I'd like to know how many of those 1,000+ fastballs at 100+mph in 2017 were strikes and how many of them were balls.
What about air resistance? Hardballs act differently at the mile high stadium in Denver, both pitched and hit. How much less resistance would there be at a two mile high baseball field, at least compared with sealevel?
I promise you, the cricket version of this episode is even more impressive. What bowlers like Warne and Jeff Thompson were able to make a ball do was amazing.
Gasthejuice45 my brother who is a pitcher would disagree with you slightly a curveball is harder to perfect also a curveball or screwball are two of the hardest pitches to hit especially for a left hander
soapqueen2008 fastball right on the corner = game over. Curve balls aren't hard to hit at all. The only real reason they can be difficult is because it's thrown at a different speed.
Im sure a tennis player could throw pretty fast too. The mechanics of a tennis serve and a pitch are basically the same. I never played baseball and one time, I pitched a baseball and it was clocked 61 MPH... I was 15 at the time. Im now older and much stronger. Im in shape and continued ot play tennis. ID be curious to see what speed i could pitch. Granted when they at 3:50 secs or so in the video talk about his arm not being perpendicular, that was the first thing i noticed. not enough "racquet drop" was we say in tennis.
They clocked them at different points. Clocked at the point today, they measured that pitch at 101mph. They've standardized things since that time. Which is a good thing in my opinion. Yet... I cant' help think some of the really old timers through that fast... there was not timing mechanism in there day. The mound was higher.... Satchel Page...it would be interesting to know.
@@Poindexterous REALLY? Have you ever looked at his stats? I bet not. 7 no-hitters for one. Guiness Book world record of pitching a baseball at 108 mph is another. In his prime, he often pitched at 100+ mph.
@@sergeantmasson3669 yes that’s actually what I mean. Stat wise he’s not a top 10 pitcher (all time). Though most talk about him as such. He played 25+ years had the most strikeouts (5k)yes, but also pitched 5k innings. 7 no hitters is very impressive and no doubt he’s a HOFer but just a bit overrated IMO.
I think in 10-15 years it will be 108-109mph and average speed will be 100-104. Batters won’t be able to hit anymore there will be a lot of walks and strikeouts. Baseball will have to change in some way, like the elimination of the mound. If the mound was eliminated the velocity of the ball would drop drastically. Hitters now are having s big issue with hitting 93-97mph and it is showing in the strikeout stats in 2018.
akaredcrossbow I doubt it. The great thing about baseball is, their isnt as much change over the years in it as in other sports. NFL, NHL, NBA players of the 60s most likely couldn't compete in the modern leagues. Thats probably not the case for baseball. The skill sets required for baseball dont rely as much on genetics and superior athleticism but more so on skill.
We will evolve. The same way records are broken at the Olympics we will continue to evolve, is there a wall or a limit to our evolution....that's the big question.
I had a friend in college who I swear threw over 110. The ball was a blur and you could hardly get the bat around in time. We didn't have a radar gun but it was insane. He said the trick was timing the release of the pushing leg with the elbow and wrist of the throwing arm and when you release the knee to pinch your but cheeks to give stability to your torso. I'm telling you this guy was insane. He had a very short career because he broke his arm throwing 3x, but dang-he had the mechanics down!
Best pitcher is a finesse pitcher like Greg Maddux, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine. They all had off speed pitches that were dirty and their fast hit their spots for a strike..
No way, the best pitchers ever were Zito, Mulder, Hudson, Eckersley and Vida Blue. Also the best pitcher today has got to be Mike Diers or Sean Manea. I’m not an A’s fan, I just coincidentally think those guys are the greatest🥴
The biggest mistake in this is the batter reaction times. Yes, a batter has great reaction time, but baseball is a game of chess. The batter is trying to figure out what pitch is coming next, where is going to be. He'll begin his swing BEFORE the pitch is thrown, and hope he made the correct decision.
It’s been five years so I don’t reckon you’ll see this but for others who do, this is a common misconception. Hitters can certainly guess what’s coming, but a baseball isn’t large enough to hit by pure chance. Hitters start the swing motion during the pitcher’s motion (watch clips, you’ll see they shift their weight back, this movement is called “loading up”). After the pitch is released the bat begins to come around. Then, based on their read of the ball, they either drive the bat through the ball or hold it back. This is why you sometimes hear the saying, “every pitch is either a swing or an aborted swing.” Alternatively, as any good coach will drill into your skull, “it’s a strike until it’s not.” After all, if batters just guessed, breaking balls would be pointless. Pitchers would just throw fastballs and changeups because those are easiest to control.

Depends on how you define "strike". Do you mean a pitch that is within the strike zone? Or do you mean a pitch that results in the umpire calling "strike", without respect to the pitch's location?
This man look like great value drake

The more they see a pitcher, the more intricate things they pick up. Gwynn was one of the earliest guys who revealed how they studied pitchers back in the 80's, and why he won so many batting titles back then. He used to use VHS tapes of the pitchers to study their motion, their release point, how the balls moved, etc, and it paid off, he won multiple batting titles.
Yeah, i have tendonitis in my elbow. It really sucks because i pitched for 7 years and now this is my 9th year and i havent pitched for 2 years. You really need to be cautious on how hard and what type of pitch you do.
Sean C. Same here but my dumbass decided it would be wise to throw out my arm at a practice
Blanket statements like “pitchers shouldn’t throw as hard” and “pitcher should throw less breaking balls” are bad. Different pitches and pitch speeds are going to be more stressful or less stressful on a given pitcher due to their distinct physiology. And the fastball puts the most stress on the arm compared to breaking balls an offspeed pitched
sad
Nolan Ryan has been credited with a 108 MPH fastball. According to The Game Haus.
$50k screen, 90's graphics, lol.
BayesianBits looked like 15 fps as well. I thinks you'd need atleast 120 fps to hit a fastball on tv
I bet u could get that exact set up for 10,000 with eye tracking tech and much better graphics and frame rate/ refresh rate and u could probably get it on the WISH app
no you couldnt... The software is proprietory. You know nothing except your moms credit card number.
When you're dealing with VR, you have to compromise pixelation. This isn't your Call of Duty game, junior.
BayesianBits what
And the Great Hambino came out of the dugout to proclaim....
“You throw the ball like a giiiiiiiirl!”
Oh yes lol
53 mph... bruh
johnnycatR58 lmao I threw harder than that at 16
NHSK PRODIGY lol I was throwing 65 at 12
i threw 95 when i had diarrhea the other day
I threw 58 at a carnival once, and I throw like a girl.
tz those thing are carnival can be rigged. When I was throwing 85-90mph, it said I only threw 60mph
It’s so hard to throw an 100 mph pitch
Jorden Hicks: *hold my beer*
*hold my UCL*
Nolan Ryan threw 108
Is anybody else cringing at how this guy throws a baseball? 🤢
Big time. I threw 55 at 12 and mid 80's in my 20's
Speed wouldn't even matter if he had any decent form at all.
Literally every comment is about that you mong
Bruh I was throwing upper 90s when I was 14 while your mom was giving me the old reach around
AllNike13 to be fair he was trying to throw it with his arm cocked back more like the guy said is needed for faster pitches.
Right. They didnt say anything about the increased resistance at higher speeds
I promise you, the cricket version of this episode is even more impressive. What bowlers like Warne and Jeff Thompson were able to make a ball do was amazing.
Can you link me the episode?
I can't find it.
Didn't find it
0:16 video of guy throwing a breaking ball.
“Fast ball is the best pitch in the game” Pfffft try my junk ball sir
Gasthejuice45
😂😂
Gasthejuice45 my brother who is a pitcher would disagree with you slightly a curveball is harder to perfect also a curveball or screwball are two of the hardest pitches to hit especially for a left hander
soapqueen2008 fastball right on the corner = game over. Curve balls aren't hard to hit at all. The only real reason they can be difficult is because it's thrown at a different speed.
Try to hit my eephus pitch and then we can talk lol
or what if you throw it really slow and the guy swings expecting an 100 but it comes 1 second later XD
Make all of your videos over 10 minutes. No one would complain. Every single Almost Impossible video is great.
Nolan Ryan had a pitched clocked at 108.5 mph, but Chapman has the highest "recorded" pitch in a game.
Jon Lanier Nolan Ryan’s pitch was actually 101 mph, but since they changed the measurements, in today’s game it would be 108.1 mph
Aroldis Chapman: Hold my beer.
Smites. Then he gives up 3 runs to the Red Sox in the bottom of the 9th.
GOLFing. Lol
my man throws the ball like it's a live grenade and he doesn't know when the fuse was pulled
This dude is the Vsauce of sports science
Lmao
Eggycrunchybob you mean SportsScience is the VSauce of sports science
You mean boring to watch with no real factual data given to the viewer?
Who cares? My wife told me it was impossible to vacuum the living room...I did it.
Thats how I look when I throw/swing left handed.
WIRED: It’s impossible to hit a 110 mph pitch.
Stanley Anderson: Hold my burger
Look up Shaun Tait and Brett Lee highlights, now that’s fast
IamAbeliever that too it bounce on the pitch and you never know where is it Gonna Come.
And Akhtar and Starc too
Nobody threw harder than Nolan Ryan in his prime. And he was still lighting it up in the upper 90s into his mid 40s. Man was inhuman.
He was still very overhyped.
They couldn’t find a host could throw or swing a bat?!?!
Yeah but this guy sucks
My generation doesn't have as many baseball fans as previous generations.
“It’s the pitch that’s thrown the most.”
Knuckleballers: hold my beer
Didn’t Nolan Ryan throw 108?
No
I love this comment and response because he just asked a question this mans just like no... just no
Yes, he did.
I thought he did to
@@illusionclan8104 yes he did 😂🤣😂🤣😂
When you’re 12 and pitch 10 mph faster than him
Louie Luna I’m 12 and I pitch 57 through 63
Louie Luna ikr I’m 11 and I throw 47 to like 52

I'm sorry but this guy throws like my sister... 😁

I throw in 80s still his problem he’s stiff, almost pushing the ball
I read this as he throws this like I throw my sister
Josh James of the Houston Astros made his MLB debut in 2018 and the very first pitch he threw was 102 mph 😍😍😍
8:41 anyone got what was his point? Didn't seem to make much sense what he said
he really said aroldis wrong....
kevin patrick you really spelled it wrong
caleb mullenax what did he spell wrong
Yeah lol it’s pronounced A-rold-is
Air-old-is, i have no idea how to screw it up the way he did
Headphone users be warned at 8:56
Do you even throw bro
VCFL Virtual College Football League do you even play the sport?
Ur wrong, Nolan Ryan threw a 109 mph fastball. In the 9th inning with 154 pitches, a freak of nature
@@d.c.h5403 Idk, the hardest throw of all time was in the 70s and hasnt been beaten yet. I doubt 110 will be physically possible.
If that's the case, they'll move the ball back 3 feet.
How does the mound help?
Sorry, i know nothing about baseball.
Lmao couldn't they have chosen someone SLIGHTLY more competent in baseball to do this? And dress him more properly for the task...
that wouldn't be fun
Blaster118 it would let actual baseball players relate better to this cause this dude cant even throw lol
*Air-Oldis Chapman*🤦🏽♂️
Kyle Weir ....THANK YOU!!! This guy cant throw a baseball to Save his life

Coach : Sorry, u out. That is way too slow.
Now y’all know your mom can a throw a flip flop at you at least 500 mph
I threw a 234 mph curveball and I’m only 3 wym
Maybe in Wii
If you’re gonna lie make it good at least, everybody knows a 3 year old can do 115 tops. Unless you’re juicing that is
BasedGod Strugglin' 😂😂😂😂
When I was 3 I could pitch 842 mph slider and a 1264 mph fastball wtf you’re slow
I can throw it 186,282 miles per second. When I pitch the ball goes back in time and arrives at the catcher before I throw it.
I can throw a 90+ ball but it will hit the ground or you most of the time.
Carlo Alberto lol
What if you could throw 110mph average but 10% of your pitches hit the batter?
@@joebob978 You'd probably kill somebody.
No you cant
I had a friend in college who I swear threw over 110. The ball was a blur and you could hardly get the bat around in time. We didn't have a radar gun but it was insane. He said the trick was timing the release of the pushing leg with the elbow and wrist of the throwing arm and when you release the knee to pinch your but cheeks to give stability to your torso. I'm telling you this guy was insane. He had a very short career because he broke his arm throwing 3x, but dang-he had the mechanics down!
Chapman: finally a worthy opponent our battle will be legendary
Best pitcher is a finesse pitcher like Greg Maddux, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine. They all had off speed pitches that were dirty and their fast hit their spots for a strike..
Wonder who your favorite team is, no bias whatsoever.
@@redlights1585 not the braves but I always liked their pitching back in the day
No way, the best pitchers ever were Zito, Mulder, Hudson, Eckersley and Vida Blue.
Z
It’s been five years so I don’t reckon you’ll see this but for others who do, this is a common misconception. Hitters can certainly guess what’s coming, but a baseball isn’t large enough to hit by pure chance. Hitters start the swing motion during the pitcher’s motion (watch clips, you’ll see they shift their weight back, this movement is called “loading up”). After the pitch is released the bat begins to come around. Then, based on their read of the ball, they either drive the bat through the ball or hold it back. This is why you sometimes hear the saying, “every pitch is either a swing or an aborted swing.” Alternatively, as any good coach will drill into your skull, “it’s a strike until it’s not.”
After all, if batters just guessed, breaking balls would be pointless. Pitchers would just throw fastballs and changeups because those are easiest to control.
Nolan Ryan’s fastest pitch was actually around 108.5 mph if you consider the problem with the placement of the radar.
Robbie: it’s impossible to throw a 110 miles per hour pitch.
Chapman: Hold my beer.
