- Usain Bolt is "the world's fastest man" because he has the record for the 100 meter sprint at 9.58 seconds. But could runners go faster? WIRED's Robbie Gonzalez explores the science of extreme sprinting speed.

I guarantee you if there was a lion behind Bolt he'd beat his world record no doubt.

No he wouldn’t because the lion would catch up to him before he gets to the 100m mark

Not in his world records. I thought that too at first, but then I rewatched them and realized that he never actually let off. A lot of his non wr runs however…
@@peterparker1724 in his 9.58 he eased up at the end. He didn’t even bother to lean at the end
@@DarkFlames42 He didn't need to lean. Runners usually only lean when it's a close race and a lean will help them win. It didn't look like he eased up in his 9.58, maybe he did and his momentum just carried him through the line at a speed close to what he was running right before he eased up.
@@timmytheinventor4746 If 'a lean will help them win', then a lean would have helped get a faster time.
He gets paid to run, if he goes his hardest he will only get paid for that one time. If he ends up barely beating the past record then he gets multiple deals and more money because he has more events.
Usain Bolt could get a ticket for jogging in a school zone.

@@omgurheadsgone Dumbass its a joke. And in fact speed limits also affect bicycles. You're not allowed to ride your bike faster than the speed limit of the closest road is, even if you're not on the drive way, so its not only about motorised vehicles.
LOL! And if some kid get out in front of him, he would also be more likely to hit that than a car going the same speed (even if the car of course, is a lot worse for the kid, IF it hits). His starting acceleration during a race (the initial push) is very fast (even compared to car standards), but he can't stop or turn very fast (stopping distance is probably about the same as the acceleration distance would be, if he started by just standing upright, without the foot steps and the normal stating position - maybe even worse, because the shape of the body makes it easier to accelerate than decelerate when running).
High speed turning is probably the worst, since that has to be done with very little contact with the ground all the way (during deceleration, he can at least increase the deceleration rate, as the speed get down and he get more contact with the ground)
He literally can’t run in School zones

I'm not sure under 9 seconds is impossible, partly because many used to say that Bob Beamon's long jump record would never be broken. It was broken in just over 20 years. There was speculation for a while that Bolt, if he applied himself enough, got even faster, had the perfect race, possibly at altitude with thinner air, and ran to his absolute best, might stand a chance of going under 9. BUT....there has to be a time that going below is impossible... For example, a human could never run the 100 meters in 2 seconds of course... So would love to know the absolute definitive answer on this.

Ting Tong The Russian Spy improbable*
9.5 down to 9 flat is such a greater benchmark to hit than 2:00:25 to 1:59:40 that it's ridiculous to compare the two in any way.
100 years ago, the world records were around 10.5 seconds. They probably thought someone running it in 9.58 was absurd, but yet here we are. Even 20 years ago it was 9.78 and Bolt took 2/10 a second off that time.
Human ability has its limits.
To increase ground reaction a primary aspect that is often ignored is the increase created by a good arm action. Try standing on a set of scales and aggressively bringing your arms up. Note the effect on the scales. Also note how the change of arm motion at the end of its swing can reduce your body weight thus aiding flight. Research into this aspect of sprinting is too often neglected when compared with reaction times, leg power, cadence etc. In addition the arms counteract the eccentric thrust that is created by leg forces not being applied directly to the central line of the body. So wider hips and narrow shoulders do not encourage efficient application of power when sprinting. A rotating body core caused by eccentric thrust not being counteracted by the arm action reduces muscle efficiency in all limb muscles connected to it. So reducing 100m times depends on leg and arm actions plus all the other factors. Certainly it can go lower than it currently is.

Einstein proved that time is relative so if we just got out the audience in a spaceship and propelled them at 50% the speed of light, it could be possible for the runner to make it in under 9 seconds relative to the audience. The only problem is that it is impossible to get an audience to move that fast.

Plot twist: velocity is a paid actor
Acceleration is just CGI
100m in 10sec is already very fast. Imagine you cover a distance of 10m in just one sec. That will be about 36km/h speed. Imagine you go at that speed constantly and you will take just a little more than an hour to complete a marathon.
They go faster than that at their top end speed, 45 km/hour
The problem with running the 100m in 9 seconds is the fact that the faster you run, the less time you have to accelerate since the race has been reduced by 10% of time. So you would need accelerate or get up to top speed so ridiculously fast that it's not a matter of increasing top speed but more an issue of achieving top speed faster. To get to 9 seconds, you'd need Usain Bolt levels of top speed and get to that insane top speed within your first step or two, which is humanly impossible.

Add to the factors mentioned the new sprint spike technology Bolt has complained about. Also I have wondered about high altitude (there is no limit on the altitude of the competition venue even though there is strong empirical evidence that race times are substantially improved at high-altitude venues. Studies indicate that 100-m sprinters derive a substantial
performance advantage when competing at a high-altitude venue. This does not hold for longer distances and especially if a sprinter is acclimated. Having grown up in La Paz Bolivia about 2 miles over sea level you could count on the less wind resistance to kick the soccer ball further it is a real thing, and when I arrived to the States I could feel the air through my fingers like you can on water. Oxygen depravation affects performance in most other sports but worth testing with world class sprinters.
Usain Bolt was 6`5". Its part of the reason he was so fast. He took fewer strides than almost anyone else. So it stands to reason that a 7`athlete could break 9secs

Bolt ran an 8.65 in a relay leg with a running start.
keyword "running start"
The answer is pretty simple. If Usain Bolt could run 100 meters in 8.6 seconds, then this video would be called "Why It's Almost Impossible to Run 100 Meters In 8 Seconds"
He ran it in 9.58 seconds though
