There was speculation for a while that Bolt, if he applied himself enough, got even faster, had the perfect race, possibly at altitude with thinner air, and ran to his absolute best, might stand a chance of going under 9. To increase ground reaction a primary aspect that is often ignored is the increase created by a good arm action. Try standing on a set of scales and aggressively bringing your arms up. Note the effect on the scales. Also note how the change of arm motion at the end of its swing can reduce your body weight thus aiding flight. Research into this aspect of sprinting is too often neglected when compared with reaction times, leg power, cadence etc. In addition the arms counteract the eccentric thrust that is created by leg forces not being applied directly to the central line of the body. So wider hips and narrow shoulders do not encourage efficient application of power when sprinting. A rotating body core caused by eccentric thrust not being counteracted by the arm action reduces muscle efficiency in all limb muscles connected to it. So reducing 100m times depends on leg and arm actions plus all the other factors. Certainly it can go lower than it currently is.
I once got chased by a dog on a beach in Colombia, holy crap I was scared. I was running barefoot on sand but I swear it must of been almost the fastest I've ran.
"Bob Beamon world record long jump at the 1968 Olympics (8.90 meters/29 feet, 2.5 inches), achieved at the altitude of Mexico City, was one of the great performances in Olympic history." - some Wiki. The tail-wind for this jump was 1.99 m/s.
100 years ago, the world records were around 10.5 seconds. They probably thought someone running it in 9.58 was absurd, but yet here we are. Even 20 years ago it was 9.78 and Bolt took 2/10 a second off that time.
If you look at old videos of athletics, they’re running on what looks like gravel 😅. I think the times came down significantly because of the advancements in shoe technology and quality race tracks. I don’t see anyone beating Bolt’s record for a LONG time. Most of the sprinters these days are winning in 9.8-ish.
Helen Howarth It’s a joke cuz his profile pic and name are kim jong un who is the dictator of north korea who lies about his accomplishment to north korean citizens.
Bolt racing with another Bolt beside him in his prime, perfect technique, start up and no unnecessities deffo breaks 9.49 for sure. What I mean with another Bolt is someone of his caliber.
I don't think that person is born yet. Bolts 200m record will break way sooner than his 100m. 9.58 is unbelievable. There's only ever been 2 sprinters in history other than bolt that ran sub 9.7, and it was 9.69.
Everyone in the comments is breaking down stats and posing hypotheticals while ignoring one thing: these are human beings. No one is perfect, no one can maintain perfect strides or perfect starts over 100m in any race. It will not happen. 9s is physically impossible for a human being. Maybe the world's first cyborg will pull it off.
“Running a 5 second hundred metres is impossible" Followed by random Schwarzenneger quotes and claims that the video will be about 4 second 100 metres in 20 years.
It will be possible in the future, but it will be because of changes... Types of starter blocks and their angles, the surface run on and energy delivery, material of clothing worn. It'll happen, eventually. But if everyone had to run on the same dirt track in the countryside, then probably not.
its funny how all the people think that we'll be half-cyborgs in the future. who wants that? would you like to date a girl which is half-cyborg? neither wants a girl to date you if you're a half-cyborg. people won't be like that in any future i think.
I find it a bit odd that they didn't factor height / stride length. I contend that a reason why Bolt is so remarkable in sprinting is his height. Bolt is the tallest Olympiad winner in the 100m ever at 6 feet 5 inches. The second tallest was 6 feet 2 inches (Carl Lewis). The fact that Bolt maintained a high turnover rate being that tall is astonishing and is a huge factor in his speed. Bolt ran the 100m sprint with an avg of 41 strides. That's about 2.439m per stride or 96 inches. If you could increase your stride length by form or just by extension of your height (such as the case with Bolt), over the course of a 100m race you could shave off 1 less stride. In a 100m sprint, 1 less stride to the finish line is a HUGE advantage. During my sprint training days I was told that starts, RPMs and stride length were the holy trinity in speed.
It's not just stride length, how fast muscle can contract also plays a role, too slow and your feet would've left the ground before your tremendously powerful leg muscles ever managed to apply full force to the ground
that's bs, the stride length doesn't count at all; if it did every 4 legged animal would be slower than us considering their less stride length. If we could manage to move our legs faster, the more steps we can do means more force that pushes us and the faster we get.
12:27 "So, do you practice on reaction time?" *Slower guy:* (shakes head) *Faster guy:* "We do" Guess you should start practicing your reaction times to hit that 9.8
I’d like to see the 1988 Ben Johnson running in his form back then now with the better technology, ie track surface, shoes, outfits. When you looked at him back then he was a machine. Unbelievably fit. 9.79 in 1988 with crappier equipment is amazing.
The answer is pretty simple. If Usain Bolt could run 100 meters in 8.6 seconds, then this video would be called "Why It's Almost Impossible to Run 100 Meters In 8 Seconds"
@@Sheddertje I mean, obviously, but it's a moot point. Yes, if the human physiology was such that a record of 8.6 were possible, the title would've changed appropriately. The exact numbers are of little, if any, importance to the point.
Personally, I've always wondered how fast Bolt could have gone in Beijing. He set a world record with his body partially turned towards the camera and his arms out in celebration for the last 20 meters or so, plus his start was only mediocre. Oh, and he wasn't even running the 100m until the year before that to boot.
he wouldn't have gone 9.4 and it wasn't 20m left. It would have probably been 9.5 or something like that. I run track and slowing a bit at the end doesn't do as much as you think
Einstein proved that time is relative so if we just got out the audience in a spaceship and propelled them at 50% the speed of light, it could be possible for the runner to make it in under 9 seconds relative to the audience. The only problem is that it is impossible to get an audience to move that fast.

Great piece! There will have to be another freak of nature like Usain Bolt with his height, turnover, and strength, but whose mechanics are better than Bolt’s.He may have been able to exert more force if he didn’t have that side to side sway.He also was able mentally to rise to the occasion, the person will need that too.
The MIND is everything. That's how Tennis player Novak Djokovic become the GOAT. I dont think the guy that beats Bolts record will have to be as tall as him. He could be 6 1" or 6 2". But he has to have perfect weight distribution in his physique. Fast legs. And perfect technique..And supreme mental strength. If a man standing 5 8" TRAYVON BROMELL. Can run 9.77. A Man standing 6 1--6--2 with everything he has. But a slightly wider stride could run 9.55 or better.

One of the things about being a host that you can’t control is your voice. I really like this guys voice it’s smooth, not monotonous, and not pitchy either it’s perfectly in the middle
The problem with running the 100m in 9 seconds is the fact that the faster you run, the less time you have to accelerate since the race has been reduced by 10% of time. So you would need accelerate or get up to top speed so ridiculously fast that it's not a matter of increasing top speed but more an issue of achieving top speed faster. To get to 9 seconds, you'd need Usain Bolt levels of top speed and get to that insane top speed within your first step or two, which is humanly impossible.
@@grandcity7320 I think he was making a bit of a joke. "doing it FOR 6 seconds" should've been doing it IN 6 seconds. Now it kinda sounds like the runner just gives up after 6 seconds.
Bolt has never been the fastest out of the blocks but once he gets up to speed, his top speed is unmatched. In an ideal scenario it might just be possible to get close or even beat the elusive 9.

Su bingtian is a good example on how to maximise on block start phases and that less strides is not necessarily good during first 60 meters
that's bs, the stride length doesn't count at all; if it did every 4 legged animal would be slower than us considering their less stride length. If we could manage to move our legs faster, the more steps we can do means more force that pushes us and the faster we get.

JC No, I think steroids are like illegal energy drinks. Because why would the Russians drug all the runners if they decreased stamina?
The problem with running the 100m in 9 seconds is the fact that the faster you run, the less time you have to accelerate since the race has been reduced by 10% of time. So you would need accelerate or get up to top speed so ridiculously fast that it's not a matter of increasing top speed but more an issue of achieving top speed faster. To get to 9 seconds, you'd need Usain Bolt levels of top speed and get to that insane top speed within your first step or two, which is humanly impossible.
