Here's my customer service story: I'm a school psychologist for a public school system. Tested a child whose parent was adamant he was autistic. 12+ combined hours of testing and report writing, and he did not meet state criteria. Mom goes ballistic that I said her child was not autistic and demands a second psychologist redo the testing. 12+ hours for my supervisor, and guess what: the student was not found to meet the criteria for autism. That's right. Parents get mad at you for presenting evidence that their child does not have a mental health disorder...It's not even uncommon.

My story: I worked as a bag boy and a grocery store for my first job. One day I was happily taking a ladies groceries out to her car. I loaded all the groceries into the back of her SUV and she was highly impatient during the whole process. Before I finished placing the last bags she slammed the trunk on both of my arms, badly bruising both of them. I wasn't having any of it.
While she was calling me 'slow in the head', I grabbed every single bag in the back and dumped them all on the ground, destroying everything. Luckily enough for me she was a stage 4 Karen so when I went back inside wounded with her following behind me screaming, I didn't have to say much before she was banned and I was given paid time off. She also didn't receive replacement groceries because her dumbass maneuver was caught on camera.

I told him I cannot wrap it because the water will go everywhere’s in it and before I could offer dumping the water out and wrapping the flowers and giving him the vase separately, he slammed his full grocery cart into the customer service desk I was standing behind and starting screaming/cursing about how difficult it is to get flowers…. Like sir calm down your 35 screaming and causing a scene in a local grocery store over you not thing something through man and screaming at 15 year olds.. embarrassing for him 😂

    Dear Tylor,
Here is my favorite story from when I worked customer service: Back in 2003 or 2004 I worked at a call center dealing with the college financial aid application (FAFSA). Around this time they were switching from paper forms to the new online application, which was not well communicated in advance (because government). The day before college classes are supposed to start, a mother calls in to let us know the paper renewal application was not received, as it had been in previous years, and it was OUR fault her son wasn't going to be able to start classes on time. I explained the new online application process, no more paper renewal forms, the fact that it was her son's responsibility to make sure things were completed on time not her responsibility or ours, blah blah blah. She was tearing into me for quite some time, so of course I am zoning out. Right around the 30 minute mark I hear her say "Thank you for ruining my son's life!!!!" My ear heard "Thank you" and before my brain could process the full sentence and context I instinctively said "You're welcome!" I immediately realized I done goofed and prepared for more screaming and a demand for a manager. Lucky for me she was so pissed off she hung up! I then noticed my supervisor practically falling out of her chair laughing because it turns out she was live monitoring the call. No write up, no reprimand. Got a kudos for handling the call as well as I did, even though it was waaaaayyyyy over our expected handle time. Good times

Just stared at people who were ridiculous but also when things were returned took the items but was responsible for creating new tags. He got some incredible bargains like a leather coat that had been returned. Apparently the company liked him enough that summer that they hired him again before he joined the military. So about the old people online thing:
My grandfather just got a new phone for Christmas and was super jealous of his friends/family (fellow old people) because they were sending him "stickers" through text that had little cartoon versions of the people sending it (kinda like Bitmoji from Snapchat). He was basically like "You NEED to figure out how to put this on my phone (name)!". So I figured out what app they were using and spent about 3 hours with him making his little avatar absolutely perfect. He was overjoyed at the end and was SUPER excited to send his sister and other people random stickers of his character in different poses. He then also told me that he downloaded Google's version of FaceTime (Meet) and needed me to show him how to use it. Clicked a few buttons and he was again overjoyed when he was able to both talk to AND SEE his sister about a thousand miles away instantly on his phone. These simple little things most people take for granted because it's so common absolutely made his week. He was so happy, like a child at Christmas with a mountain of gifts under the tree 🥺😂

I used to work roadside assistance customer service.. And the protocol is: we need to ask the customer for their information to load their account file, assure it's in good-standing, and fill-out key details about the situation BEFORE we can put in request for service -- obviously! But it was all-too-common to have people call in, highly distressed, emotional, hyper, and/or angry; give their location; demand a tow truck; and attempt to hang-up without allowing basic follow-up questions (like their name or type of vehicle - which is relevant to know which vehicle to locate, and also which kind of tow-truck to dispatch).
I'd also have customers call in and expect the tow-truck to arrive in the 3 minutes they spend on the phone with me, or literally have NO IDEA what kind of car they were driving (that happened about 30% of the time, no joke, and majority female) .... But the best story was when a woman spent 30 minutes on the phone with me insisting that the tow-truck driver had stolen her vehicle because it hadn't arrived to the destination drop-off yet... Only to find out the tow-truck driver was on the next street over looking for her because she, the caller, had given the wrong address!

I am in Australia and I remember when i was in my 40s and working at the checkout of a grocery store. At that time, we would scan the items into an empty shopping trolley (cart) and the customer would then bag or box the items. Anyhow this woman came in with her 4 or 5 year-old son and throughout the whole store he was throwing items and getting into everything. Guess who came through my checkout. She put him in the trolley so he could throw the items on the belt and anything that broke she obviously said she did not want. After they were all up she left him in the trolley and put the trolley next to the scanner so I could scan her groceries. Her son was banging on the scanner the whole time and she did not once reprimand him. When it came to the huge cans of dog food, i stopped and asked her to lift him out of the trolley as I was worried i would hit him with one. She said no that she had a bad back and that she would not do it. So I said fine, I am not scanning anymore items. She said she wanted to talk to the manager and I said "great, so do I". The assistant manager came over and took her away then came back and placed an empty trolley and asked if I could continue the order, which I did. She stood there when he walked away with a smirk on her face and said that I discriminated against her because she was a mother. I told her I have four children, which I do. When she paid, she said "did I hear you say "thank you" and I told her "no, you didn't"". After she left the assistant manager came and asked me to log off my register and I thought I was going to be chastised, instead he told me to go and have a 30 minute break. I would hate to think what her home looked like as that child was a horror, just like his mum.
    Great job Tyler :)

Customer service story: I recently worked at tractor supply and elderly couple came in looking for something to soothe the sore feet of their goats and I offered up advice on trimming and washing and grooming and medical care of injured goat hooves, I talked about using peroxide for soft hooves to harden them and using epsom salts to soak hard bruised and inflamed hooves..... The lady immediately freaked out and start yelling at that would just hurt the goats because they had little scrapes and cuts and epsom salt is going to cause a lot of pain because it's salt..... So I had to explain to her that actually Epsom salt is not sodium chloride which is table salt and ocean salt, but it's magnesium sulfide. She called me a fuking idiot and stormed out of the store actually thinking epsom salts are the same as table salt. Kicker is, I trim and take care of hooves as a side business. Almost as bad are the "pitbull dog trainers" it barely understand or speak English but think they know everything about training a dog when everything they say about how to train a dog, from the worst corners of Internet forms of idiots that I've never trained dogs. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Can't fix stupid. At this time I was an office guy that worked on a computer all day. So after preparing a new copy of all the paperwork and arranging for someone to hurry and deliver it, I get a call from the salesman. The job superintendent had removed the paperwork overnight because it was stormy. The angry framer called the salesman and apologized to him. Sheepish coward didn't have the guts to apologize to the person he actually yelled at.

She did this 4 times, and each time a different person took the call. The last call, she said she was sending someone over to fetch her bag. If we gave her friend any trouble, then she was calling corporate to get us shut down.

I currently work as a security guard in a supermarket and I've seen idiots almost everyday. Majority of the time is when a customer complains that the price of the item that was scanned at the counter is not the same as the price tag on shelf is where the cashier usually ask me to locate that specific item in the entire store and find that exact price tag for that item. Most of the time it's the customer's fault for not reading the damn price tag as the price tag literally has the name, item size and barcode number on it to make sure its the right one. There was this one time that my first encounter with a karen is that she complained to the cashier so hard to the point it made her cry in public and to make it worse is that she was a rookie staff member who just recently work for less than a month.
Last week I met another different karen and this time it's a male karen. It was the Chinese New year sale going on and I was in charge of guarding the firework stand. This entitled male karen walks up to the stand and we said the following:
    Male karen: hello what's this?
Me: oh that, that's dragon egg it literally looks like a fireball when lit up
Male karen: do you have an example?
Me: sorry I don't have an example to show
Suddenly he started to berate me for how rude the way I speak as he demand to speak to my manager. I've been talking to customers with a calm voice since late December whenever I'm guarding the firework stand and somehow he's the first one to have problem with my way of speaking. I kept my mouth shut the entire time because I know no matter what I say it will only get worse. I'm so confused that time on how the hell did I triggered him with only a few harmless sentences. Then his daughter told the cashier that I was the one who's being rude to him spreading lies throughout the store while I'm dealing with her entitled sensitive male karen father. I never want to see that POS of a man and his lying dogface daughter ever again.

Best costumer service thing that happened to me was when I was 23 years old. A guy came into the liquor store and I could tell he was about half lit. He started pissing and moaning about why I was refusing him service. I politely told him that I couldn’t sell him anything due to his already being inebriated. He started raising his voice saying he was going to have the owners, who he said were friends of his, fire my sorry ass. I politely said that if he had a complaint with the way he was treated, he could start with telling me. He got bent sideways and started screaming at me as to why the hell would he want to say anything to me since I was just a store clerk. I told him to check out the liquor license in the frame by the door. Why the hell would I do that?, he asked. I said because if he was the cause of the store’s license to be revoked, my wife and daughter wouldn’t be very happy and neither would I. I said, Buddy, you’ve been talking to the owner the whole time, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to risk my livelihood just so you could get a little higher.
He returned the next day and apologized and became a good customer, but they all knew I wouldn’t risk my store for their high.

About IT Customer Service: I once had a secretary tell me that she had trouble getting resumes to a file server. Then she explained that the problem was in scanning the docs to her email. Customer service story here: I used to work at Walmart. I started out in bakery and worked my way up to CSM pretty quickly. I actually liked my job. I had a customer one day who's card kept declining at the register so I had to take him up to the customer service desk. He started getting irate, cut in line in front if people and almost started a fight there. After trying to do the transaction again his card declined and he got even more mad and decided to pull out his phone and try to record me. I hid my face as I walked into the money room. Meanwhile management had been called but took their sweet time as always. After about 15 minutes the guy decides to use a different card and shocker the transaction went through. When all was said and done the managers over me told me I was in the wrong and I should have done better to try and defuse the situation. The customer said I should have been fired, I didn't know what I was doing, blah blah blah. The girls working the service desk had my back thank goodness. This wasn't the only reason but it was one of the main reasons I quit. The customer...is not...always right.

98% of retail bosses have ZERO clue about what shop floor staff have to go through. Managers think just because they did some business degree then they know everything when infact they know far less than anyone else when it comes to the actual business they're currently working in. The predominant reason is for self interest gains, not company gains or work environment improvements.
I worked in retail for over 20 years from JD Sports to Virgin Megastore to Esprit and apart from my Stockroom manager at Virgin Megastore and Esprit, none of the others had a damned clue.

It doesn't mean you fall over backwards for every person that walks in the door, it means that you do whatever it takes to get them to spend the most amount of money at your store. Someone who comes in and makes your staff uncomfortable, doesn't pay, and ends up costing you money is not a customer.

I worked in the hub for 10+ years at UPS and I have to say that most people have absolutely no idea what a package goes through to go from A to B. Pack your boxes good and tight and I don't mean with paper like it's birthday present. Make sure they are taped shut plenty good. Your package will run through multiple facilities that are pure hell with underpaid overworked handlers that give 0 shits about your box. They will be used for foot stools, chairs, or literally tossed over shoulders into a truck that is not stacked but literally filled front to back with packages just thrown in there. In my experience packages from companies range in quality but the worst was Nike. They always busted open. Big boxes with no packing material and loads of empty space. I can't tell you how many packages get obliterated in one 3.5 hour shift. Also those underpaid workers will open your shit and steal it. Theft is very common.
