I keep coming back to this video when I forget how to do certain things in DaVinci. Covers everything I need and I can skip to the sections relevant to what I'm doing. Thanks so much for making a concise and easy to follow tutorial.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. As a complete video editing noob I just managed to get the first of my holiday gopro clips edited.
Thank you. The section on colour (I'm in the UK!!) grading is so understandable, unlike so many other videos i have tried watching and given up on.
thank you so much for this tutorial! this in-depth breakdown you've created for davinci is absolutely amazing! thank you!
I really appreciate your feedback and support!
Excellent tutorial. Just starting DaVinci Resolve learning curve. Your explications were spot on except when you were going in and out with the color adjustment. I couldn't see where you had the cursor. I could see the difference in your color adjustment and that was nicely done. Lots to learn. Thanks for the jump start.
I appreciate your feedback!
Awesome, thank you for crisp and concise delivery of very useful knowledge! A lot to learn.
Thanks for the guide! I am sure to refer back to this several times on my journey!
You’re welcome and I appreciate your feedback!
Thank you very much for tutorial on editing on DaVinci Resolve. I watched the full video and took notes on each steps. Now I feel very confident I can use DaVinci Resolve to edit my GoPro footages. Great tutorial video.
Thank you for your feedback. I appreciate it.
Thank you so much for showing the steps I can’t wait to start editing some stuff
You’re welcome and have fun!
it was stunning! Thanks, I will safe this video for future
Nice result.
Couple of things there I wasn't aware of .
Yes Davinci is impressive.
Thanks for all your effort , a good watch.
I appreciate your feedback.
I have been watching your excellent video tutorials since I got my Hero11 a week ago. I have learned so much from your guidance and advice so thank you so much. Are you planning other DaVinci tutorials such as a tour for biggeners? Cheers.
Awesome refresher! Thanks, mate!
Appreciate it!
Thank you so much for this. It is an absolute standout compared to the many others on YT. Truly excellent.
I appreciate your feedback and support. Thank you.
@@GreatDayForAHike Hi, I have a little question. I've watched your tutorial video and tried to combine my 4K GoPro videos, but there is a problem. When I try to render my videos and when I try to render the finished video it says that it is going to take about 5 to 8 hours until it finishes rendering. What can I do to fix this ? Why does it just takes 5 minutes in your video and for me about 5 to 8 hours ? Please help me.
@@superalex9318 For the most part two things are going to govern how long it will take to render. First the length of the video to be processed and second the processing power of your computer. My computer is i7-8550U CPU @ 1.80GHz. No separate GPU. A video of 30 minutes in length takes just over 1 hour to process.
Very Helpful Sir! - Thank you.
You’re welcome!
Glad & inspired to be here 💯
Glad to have you here!
Im just moving away from iMovie to Devinci free version, this is incredibly helpful. The footage looks incredible, so much detail in the colours. Excellent edit, Thank you!
I’m glad you found this useful. Thanks for your feedback!
Looking forward to watching and using this... I'm only using Windows Video Editor... this will be a major step up for me... THANKS!!!

Thank you for this very helpful content about Gopro and davinci resolve matching tutorials. Hope to see of your videos God bless your family!
excelent way to explain to understand the concept
Thank you for your feedback.
very helpfull vdo. thank you sir.👍
Thanks for sharing , even though I didn't understand some of the terms used like " ripple delete " it all helps . I will add that I haven't done a single edit at this point .
Absolutely. I remember when editing was brand new to me. I recommend focusing on learning one new aspect of editing each time you edit a project. Even if it’s something simple. This will empower you to build upon your skillset and add a new skill each time to make each project better than the last one.
This was very simple basic which very helpful for beginner like me
I appreciate your feedback!
A nice, reliable guide - without being a clown (unfortunately, there are many of them on the Internet). Sometimes I return to this film. Thanks for recording!
Thank you for your feedback. I really appreciate it.
You the man, just recently downloaded the free version. I'm eventually gonna get to watching this. I need all the help I can get. ✌
Great
I appreciate your feedback.
@@GreatDayForAHike will I be ok with the free version? sense I'm only editing
Time Lapse, Time Warp, Photos and Videos?
Yes, the free version should be sufficient for all of those use cases.
Very useful!

Thank you!!
thank you so so much
You’re welcome.
Very nice interesting content on your channel I have subscribed.
Hello, excellent video thank you. I spent the last 3 hours in depth, step by step, with my own video. My question is the "adjustment clip" feature, I followed your steps but it will not allow me to expand and pertain to all? I tried everything to move it over all clips but it didnt let me. Is it because I am using the free version? Thanks again you have earned my sub indeed!
EDIT: Nevermind, I figured it out, I have to spend $300 for that option. Your tutorial and content is AWESOME But I honestly wish you would have disclosed the price we have to pay. I am not complaining, just didnt know this was for the paid full version.
Awsome! for someone who owns a gopro and is looking for a editing program i think this is the one. I have never used a editing program, what do you think the difficulty or learning time frame could be for me?
This may be a silly question but once you have the footage complete for the day, what’s the best way to upload it so you don’t lose any quality 🤔 for example, either connect it to computer for download or Bluetooth to quick app to your phone?
Great post mate. I would kindly suggest to use markers to cut to the music beat... easy and simple ;) cheers!
Thank you. Yes, the markers is definitely a good option.
OK Thanks !!
You’re welcome!
Nice tutorial. What do you do with the optimised media afterwards? How large a file does it create, compared to the source vid? Do you delete it after rendering?
It can create a pretty large file if working with many clips on the timeline. I delete it after rendering the finished product.
Thanks for this video. Currently experiencing tremendous problems with DaVinci Resolve. Playback during editing of video is nearly impossible with massive amount of jittery stuttering behavior, video and audio always out of sync. This makes review of video editing progress impossible. Numerous error messages during rendering process, program is unable to render a particular frame or clip. And now DaVinci requires over 10 hours to render an 8-minute video. It's actually insane. Have reviewed numerous "solutions" to these problems, unable to find anything other than short-term band-aids before problems return. Running out of reasons to not jettison DaVinci Resolve. Then again, it's probably just me.
Thanks
QUESTION: When I select clips in the media pool, right click, and then add them to the timeline, DVR is shortening some of the clips as it stitches them together. I have to separate the clips in the timeline, stretch them out to their full length so that the transitions between clips flow smoothly (before editing), and then delete the blank space gap I created. Sometimes I have to do this over and over again, working from the left to the right along the timeline, only to find that earlier clips have again been "cut off". This is EXTREMELY frustrating. What is causing this?
Some times when i export video from davinci the colors i think is washed out its not the color grade i made
Do you use a thecniques in export ???
Im talaking about the gopro video fotage
I shoot in flat color to geat more denamic range .....
Do ineed a luts fo gopro
Or its a setting about color profile ????
Very powerful tools but my concern is the colour grading I follow up with you only work on that particular clip we selected for the grading but the remaining number 3, 4,5,6 clip was just normal without colour grading
You’ll want to use an adjustment clip above these clips to have the grading apply to all clips.
Brilliant video mate, the most useful and in depth one I have found as a beginner... I have one question, you set the timeline to 24fps but was it shot in 24fps or 60fps? I got a little confused at the slow motion section... Thanks!
Hey, did you figure out which to select? I have a file that's been filmed 60fps so I assume I choose that
@@ML-gt7vf I had a look at some other videos and I think the general idea is that shooting in 24fps is good for most stuff to get that cinematic feel, but if you want to slow anything down, you need to shoot in at least 60fps... I might be wrong but that is what I have understood...
This is a great question. A 24fps timeline will allow for 24fps or 60fps clips to be dropped onto it. The 60fps clip will have the ability to be slowed down to 40% of the original speed but 24fps clips cannot be slowed down without getting choppy. However, you can also drop 60fps footage onto a 24fps timeline and keep it at normal speed and it will work fine to do so.
@@GreatDayForAHike thanks for the detailed reply! That's where I went wrong, I was following your tutorial whilst practicing myself on my other monitor, I tried to slow down a clip that was shot in 24fps and couldn't understand why it went choppy to begin with. But now I understand! Thankyou!
@@ML-gt7vf If you shoot in 60, on a 30 fps timeline you can slow to 50 percent speed, slow mo, and it'll be ideal. Shoot in 120 fps and you can slow down to 4 times, down to 30. That'll look great too. 90 fps slowed 3 times etc etc
Thanks for doing this. Can you can you clear something up for me? When you are editing to line up with the music, and you shrink a clip down to match the sound waves, does that get rid of the footage? Or is that only when you are cutting?
Great question. Shrink or cutting it does remove the footage from the timeline in DaVinci Resolve, but if you decide to expand a clip again you can still do so.
What is the best software for editting gopro video? 1) easiest to learn? 2) best result 3) need not top computer 4) quicker in work 5)other thoughts
Great work, thank you very much. Q: How do you store the original files? Or do you just delete them and keep the finished movie? Thank you
Great question. I sometimes keep the original files and other times I delete them. It largely depends upon if I anticipate ever wanting or needing those original files again in the future.
Hello, I enjoyed your video. Was wondering if you have tried the DaVinci Resolve on the IPad. I am wondering if it is better than the LumaFusion? Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Great question! I was excited to see the announcement that DaVinci Resolve could now be used on the IPad. That’s a huge leap forward. I have not gotten a chance yet to test Resolve on the iPad but I would bet that it is probably close to as good as LumaFusion and maybe better based on my initial expectations.
Amazing work! Just a quick question: how do you turn off the adjustment layer to check your work when grading? About 41:30 you mention it but can´t be seen on the screen and my color screen is slightly different than yours.
Thank you for the time you have put into this video.
I believe you can double press the node (small box in the top right) to turn on/off all color adjustments etc.
Thank you. Yes, this should do it.
Hey man- another great video. I’ve had issues with my 4k footage on a 2016 max mini. What computer are you using to be able to edit this 4k footage on without lag and jumps? Thanks so much 🙏🏼
Thank you. For this video I was editing this on a custom desktop running a 7950x CPU and a 3090 Ti GPU. However, even with these specs I still have to run the initial optimize on the footage for a smooth playback while editing.
@@GreatDayForAHike perfect response. Thanks so much, dude!
Quick question, if editing from 2 cameras (SD cards), one shot in 4K and one in 1080, can I render in 4K? Or would it have to be in 1080, and 4K footage be dropped down?
Great video!
Thank you. Good question. You could technically do either. Your 1080p footage could look grainy if upscaled to 4K but if your 4K footage is downscaled to 1080p it will likely look extra good.
Is this applicable to my laptop windows 11 sir ? Cos im planning to try this one instead of capcut , which is better ,
Hi thanks for your recent responses - I’ve hit the like button and subscribed 👌🏻 are the following images a plot to make people buy the full product?
I appreciate your feedback and support. I am sure DaVinci wants people to buy the full product after using the free version. I still just use the free version because I use Premiere Pro for most of my editing. I find the PP workflow is still fastest for me.
I have Davinci 18 studio and a GoPro Hero 11, What Davinci Color Management > Color Space settings do you use?
So I had 15.8 Gb of Gopro footage in 2.7K and when I did "generate optimize media" it created huge files in the OptimizedMedia folder (over 200Gb) and took almost 3 hours to do. Since I don't have a lot of hard drive space left, I had to delete the optimized files. Since Corel Videostudio wouldn't work with the Gopro 2.7K footage, I used Davince to render the files to 1080p/24 which Videostudio could work with. Videostudio makes the files less choppy by creating lower resolution files for editing and then uses the original files for rendering. Not sure I can work with DaVinci if it creates larger optimized files. Your thought about this. Final result is my latest UA-cam video. "WOW - winter..."
Please tell me about the sound frequency settings in GoPro
Helpfull video! have a question though. I recorded video's on my gopro hero 9 in 5 k, and adjusting the project settings to 3840 x 2160 Ultra HD and 24 fps, but still get very stocky video on Davinci. Do you have an idea how to fix this? Help would be very much appreciated🙏
Hello, one question, when I import my clips into DaVinci Resolve, the thumbnail says media offline, and it only plays the sound... on VLC player it plays normally I purchased HEVC codec, thinking that that would resolve the issue but it still doesn't want to display video, only sopund
can you make a video about old camera like gopro 6 or 7. because new gopro image look better and maybe higher quality
Hello Sir,great vídeo as all of yours.Sir would be to much ask if you could make a vídeo of how to edit in Davinci Skyreat Anamorphic Lens footage,it would be appreciated. Thanks
Absolutely. It’s a quick, few minute process and I will plan to do a tutorial on that.
@@GreatDayForAHike Thank you,it would be welcome.
Does this also apply to Insta360 One RS? Especially the color grading?
Hi, thanks for the awesome guide for starters!! Is there a free version of DaVinci Resolve 18 or this is rather a trial version software?
Thank you for your feedback. There is a free version and this tutorial is done using the free version. The paid version does have more features but the free version is no cost and not on a timeline as with a trial.
@@GreatDayForAHike TQ so much for the prompt reply!!
Good Video! When I import my videos onto my timeline it has a black box around each video. When I export and finish the video it looks normal and fullscreen which is good. How do I fix it whilst cutting and editing so I can get a closer look at my colours and what I'm doing please help.
You should be able to change this with the zoom settings above the video in editing mode.
Unlike in this video I always thought of Lift as shadows, Gamma as midtones, Gain as highlights and Offset as exposure.
What is the difference in using lets say the shadow box under the color wheels vs using Lift for the shadows?
You are correct in the general consensus of what those do. I’m a Premiere Pro editor first and foremost and in there Adobe labels everything really clearly with exactly what it does :-) So I did indeed misspeak on what a few of these do but as long as an editor is using the histograms/waveforms to keep the end result within the min and max limits on there this is key.
My understanding is the shadow box under the color wheels can offer more detailed precision for advanced color grading and fine tuning the shadows as these pertain to different hues and colors within the footage.
@@GreatDayForAHike Thank you for replying. I will experiment with the boxes under the wheels. I never gave them much thought until watching your video 😀
The video is cool and straight forward but have you ever gotten the ‘media offline’ problem, for beyond that point in the video of importing media files is where I’m stuck, if you have any idea of how I can get around this that would be helpful. I use a go pro 9 and the video setting are generally the same from the naming of your go pro footage.
Yes, I suspect this relates to the HEVC codec not being installed if you’re using Windows. Unfortunately, Microsoft does not include this with Windows and it is a one-time, 99 cent fee to purchase this from the Windows Store. Hope this helps.
I commend you for your slow pace and repetitions. Resolve is very powerful but steep for beginners, so fast-paced tutorials do not cut it.
I appreciate your feedback.
@@GreatDayForAHike great Work man! Tutorials are really helpful. But I'm having problems with go pro 11 footages in fusion section of da Vinci, Go Pro 11 footages having alpha attached to it and in fusion the clip is getting smaller and in editing section those extra alpha becoming black ... And now it's all mesh ... How to edit go pro 11 clips in fusion section without any alpha around it ?
Oh wait I can’t post an image… 🤔 says “ you’ve reached a limitation” etc etc then when press ok comes up with Warning “unknown tool found) AnalogSamage1_1
I’d also like to know if there’s an easier way to sync music, i.e. auto sync?
Ok I guess I needed a new Codec so first question is set. Also, when I am in the program and play the video in my timeline it looks grannie and a little choppy but yours seemed to also??
I s the preview always choppy??
The preview can be if in 4K, especially when using the HEVC codec. It’s very demanding on the system resources. Creating a proxy is one option if you want to have the best, smoothest performance. Optimizing is what I did in this but proxy will offer even smoother performance when this is wanted.
rename .LRV to mp4 and you have low res proxy .mp4 file to use if your computer struggles to handle 4k files
A very helpful tip. Thanks for sharing as I expect this will help many people!
opimized media took me 3h40min to do rip to my 8hours vid in 4k30 but otherwise the clip is too big for my pc to edit ty for your video
Wow an 8 hour video must be quite a large file. The longest I’ve worked with before is about a 1 hour and 45 minute video and even that was huge in 4K.
@@GreatDayForAHike yeah it is like 134 go not that much but yeah
Thank you so much for the video! But somehow my Davinci is not reading my gopro files 😢
Hi there, your video was great, but when I try putting my gopro footage into any editor on my PC, it says either the file is unsupported, or I need an hevc codec. Davinci Resolve says something about how the file isn't reachable. Do you think that you can help me with this?
Yes, you’ll need to download the HEVC codec from the Windows Store. It is a one-time cost of 99 cents. Unfortunately, Microsoft does not include this with the Windows operating system anymore.
Yeah but after you edit the video how can you put it back into your GoPro camera because I can’t upload it to TikTok or instagram I can only do it on my phone because ig and tik tok on pc you can’t add sound
Does this DaVinci Resolve supports also face or licence plate blurring?
It's very interesting to watch, my workflow and grading is completely different from yours! 🤣😄
There are many options when it comes to workflow and grading. These steps can be done in a different order depending on your workflow preference. This is simply my preferred order when using DaVinci Resolve.
@@GreatDayForAHike Exactly, that's what makes it so interesting! 😁
At the part where I'm importing my footage. They all imported as .MP4 but they will not open, it says media offline in each box. How do i allow .MP4?
What colour management do you use in the project settings?
I’m wondering this also
I still have the free copy of Davinci (either my camera will be bought first or I'll just cough up the bucks for the full product) and when I go to import my files (from my GoPro 8)(4K) they don't show up at all in the directory. Is this because the free version of Davinci only works with specific files? I had to use Shutter Encoder on a recent project to convert some files to a format Davinci seemed to like.
That is possible. It could also be that the files are using the HEVC codec and if you’re on Windows you do have to get the 99 cent extension from the Windows Store before these files can be recognized in Windows.
Q: For Project Settings, my camera is set to 1080 | 120 | W.
Should frame rate be at 120 or 24 or 30 as noted in your video?
🤔
Great question. This largely depends on what frame rate you want your finished product to have and if you want to do any slow motion in your finished product.
I've noticed in your videos you recommend a lot of times, but don't explain it. In your night lapse tutorial you recommend this and that, but don't say why. Same in this. I personally work in the edit tab. With the 2 windows. Clips in left, timeline in right. You can work on 4k video clips in 1080, much quicker. Then export and publish in 4k. Different methods I suppose. Edit. I've learnt a bit from this. The editing to music and the colour grading were interesting. Thanks.
Thank you for your feedback. Yes, with each video I create I do have to make a decision on which of the hundreds of individual details to fully explain, partially explain, or not explain at all. I realize I likely under-explain some details in accordance with some individual preferences while also probably over-explaining some details in accordance with some individual preferences. I do seek to meet a balance with the details.
Your feedback helps me to better understand where the best balance should be for detail explanation.
The method you mention works well as well and can help speed up this workflow, especially on lower-end hardware or older hardware. Thanks for sharing!
@@GreatDayForAHike Thanks for taking the time to do these videos. I do similar. It's not easy and takes time.
I appreciate it and all the best to you!
What's up with the small amount of blank audio at the beginning of each clip? I'm having this problem and the audio isn't synced. I have to cut that little bit out, then move the audio to match but it leaves audio missing at the end of each clip. Any ideas?
Are the audio and video part of the same file? In other words, are these files with problems the .MP4 files directly from the GoPro? Or is there a secondary, separate audio file that you recorded on another device such as an external mic?
Also, do your timeline settings match your footage? For example, if you’re dropping 30fps (actually 29.97) footage from the GoPro onto your timeline is your timeline set to 29.97fps? That slight difference can create an issue like this. 24fps would be 23.976. 60fps would be 59.94.
@@GreatDayForAHike yes, the audio and video are one file directly from the Gopro Hero 11. I do have the time line set to 29.97.
@@MtnWanderer-TieDye- Thanks for confirming. That narrows down a few of the most common possibilities.
I did the exact way you showed and all the clips in my media pool are "Media Offline" Why
This is a great tutorial, but you complete some actions too fast. For example, the first time you click on the scissors, I had to watch that section several times just to see where your mouse went because it happened so fast. A bit frustrating.
Thank you for your feedback. This helps me better understand what I can improve upon in tutorials.
I study coding, and have trouble keeping up with tutorials, you should do what I do and slow down the video in the settings in playback. That way you don’t have to keep residing or pausing.
@beardedraider4751 That’s a helpful tip. Thanks.
can you include camera footage with the gopro footage.
I have a MacBook Pro and the Hero 11 camera. When I try to upload 4k mp4 files into Resolve 18, the files show up as jpg files. Any idea why?
OKI have my first go pro filmed 1 30 second video and Just downloaded DaVinci and I have an issue.
I took the SD card out of the GoPro and put it in my computer and it will not import the. Mp4 files?
Please help
Yes, the 99 cent HEVC codec from the Windows Store should be what you need.
you're clipping the lady 37:12
Yes, it is a bit clipped. I was going for overall balance for that scene.
if I shoot and edit on 60 fps what should I do then and should be the gopro setting
If you want to shoot and in 60fps, edit in 60fps, and export in 60fps then you would just need to make sure your timeline in DaVinci is set to 59.94 for the frames per second in the settings when you setup your timeline.
Even if i record at 5,3k on my gopro 10, should i export in 4k if i wanna upload the video to youtube?
Yes. I don’t recommend exporting in 5.3K as this is not a common standard and won’t really provide any benefit. Filming in 5.3K and then placing on a 4K timeline provides a bit of a crisper footage benefit.
Hello! I wanted to color grade my GoPro 11 footage, but for some reason it just tells me media offline, which is a red screen. This happens when I put it in the timeline for some reason. I was wondering if there was away way, I can fix this? Thank you for your help.
Yes, if you’re on Windows make sure you have the HEVC codec installed. It’s a one-time purchase cost of 99 cents from the Windows Store and will enable you to view footage captured using the HEVC codec on the GoPro.
@@GreatDayForAHike Awesome, thanks! Also, does it decrease the quality of the video?
Just bought it and it works great! Thank you for the help.
Great and clear video, thanks. I have a question, hopefully you can clear my frustrations. I downloaded Davinci 18, my camera is Gopro 11 and my computer - gamer Laptop is Dell G15, aspects: 32 GB memory, AMD Ryzen 7 with Nvidia Geforce RTX . I did ultra Hd time line at 24 FPS, one effect in fusion a minimal color grading for a almost 2 minutes video. Unfortunetly at the time of render, Laptop sounds like is going to explode and then Davinci crashes. Laptop is 2022 and I already check it trought diagnostics and all came out good and I did several attemps of of troubleshoots and still. Can you give me a better idea what would be the issue and if you don't mind which are the aspects of your compuer. Tahnks!!
did you solve the problem. cause i got a similar problem.
This sounds like the GPU a getting overloaded. DaVinci is a high-GPU-utilization program and I have found that many laptop GPUs do not handle it as well due to thermal throttling and not as robust of performance as desktop GPU counterparts.
@@GreatDayForAHikeno i got a rtx 8gb 3060 ti. But i cannot play videos in davinci cause it freezes. Video plays with 2-3 fps. CPU usage gets %100 . I made a quick search and people say that free version of the davinci does not make hardware acceleration. So i must pay but i can not. :(
If you’re editing GoPro footage and don’t want to buy video editing software then I recommend checking out VideoProc Vlogger. I did a video about it and it’s quite powerful software considering it is freeware.
@@GreatDayForAHike thank you so much, i will try
Hello nice video. Do you edit hevc files directly or convert them? Then edit . Iam finding hevc files are a pain to mess with?
I usually edit them directly. If you’re on a computer without decently powerful hardware HEVC files can be a real pain and sluggish to work with. Converting to H264 first and then editing can make for a smoother editing workflow.
@Great Day For A Hike awsome thank you. My experience with 10 bit hevc files was not fun i try to avoid them for now lol .
You’re welcome. Yes, 10-bit HEVC files are quite intense for computer hardware to handle.
Connecting an SD card to an adapter is the fastest way to copy files 😎
Definitely
When I am trying to import media , my GoPro Hero 9 Black - clips, its not getting imported in DaVinci resolve 18 and I am seeing Red clips and just the sound I am able to listen in my Timeline.
What is the solution for that ?
Make sure you have the HEVC codec installed from the Windows Store. It costs 99 cents and is needed for Windows in order to view HEVC content. Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn’t bundle this for free with Windows anymore.
i can´t use my GoPro 10 footage.. DaVinci say: Media offline when i try to put it into my workspace.. with GoPro 8 i had no problems?? how did u manage to use the footage??
If you’re on Windows make sure you have the HEVC codec from the Windows Store installed. Microsoft doesn’t bundle this with Windows anymore unfortunately and it’s a one time purchase for 99 cents.
5:59 - Can you please help me with an answer - I have a DJI A4 and I want to record in 30fps , what timeline fps should I use ? 30 fps or 29.97 . (Because on the information in the camera menu it says that the recording is actually in 29.97 and this is confusing .
You should use 29.97.
@@GreatDayForAHike thanks for the fast answer
