    Thanks again for an educational video. .280AI is my favorite cartridge and have hunted/shot/loaded it for quite a few years. It helped me to understand why your powder choices were different than the ones I’m using when you explained one of your goals was to achieve complete powder burn. Makes great sense. Thanks again Tim.

    Thanks for another great video! I'm learning a lot from you, and am very interested in your process for hand-loading without spending a year's wages on equipment. I've watched a lot of hand loading videos and have never heard anyone mention burn rate, for example. And I also have never heard anyone else say not to panic if your carefully crafted load shoots badly one day. Best wishes from a grateful new subscriber 🙂

    thanks for the 280 ai sun shine. being 78 years old and actually have a few barred actions build by Parker ackley many years ago. I had to fire form brass and hand load years ago without the tools and knowledge that we have today. I follow your thought process and protocols in my hand loading today and the results have been amazing!

    I started shooting .280 AI about 20 years ago. H4831SC always gave me the best performance in terms of velocity and precision. RL22 worked well too, but I’d fall out of the mode when it got cold. I agree H1000 is less than ideal.

    Tried out your method on my 270 win. Landed on n555 with Gordons Reloading tool and is absolutely the best powder I have used . Easily getting 3200 fps in a 22 inch barrel with a 130 and zero pressure signs. Landed on a node at 3000fps and it's shooting the best it ever has. I would have never known how to do this without seeing this series so thank you much for the content. Now to test n565 with my 7 prc.

      @codyoldford1592 that's amazing Cody! I'm very happy my method is working for you. Yes, on paper N555 is the sweet spot for a 270.
      Likewise N565 will be great in a 7 PRC but you need to lean on it to burn all the powder.

    This is off topic, but yesterday shot my newish Browning hells canyon long range 6.5 PRC at my buddies farm and let him shoot it. Only had about 30 rounds through it. Had some Norma 142 match to try at 100 yards. I told him, at 50 it shot that stuff one hole. I didn't expect I could duplicate it at 100. It was one hole. Yes the trigger is a little heavier than I like on the Browning...but man it shoots. And that Norma factory ammo. Both my PRCs are lights out with everything I have ran through them, but this was the best group yet. Out the back of a truck with a bag...

    On a serious note...Just started reloading this spring. Found a very consistent load using N560. Great groups, great down range performance, stable velocities, etc. Most shooting was done this summer between 75-80 degrees. Averaging 2950 fps over multiple sessions. Went out last weekend at 55-60 degrees and velocity went down to 2900 fps.
    1. Is that normal to lose 50 fps given the temps?
    2. This is a hunting gun. Should I gradually increase powder charge to find that 2950 where it shot great at normal hunting temps?
    Thanks!

    • @Accuracy1st
      @Accuracy1st 2 дні тому +2

      Great powder. In one of my 280AIs I will be shooting VVN560 with a 160 Norma Tipstrike at 2958 fps. At that speed it is half MOA x 3 groups x 3 different days. With a slight different seating depth it shoots 2920 fps but all the bullets went into 1 hole 2 times 2 different days.

    • @LittleCrowGunworks
      @LittleCrowGunworks  2 дні тому +4

      Great question. First off, welcome to the rabbit hole with no bottom.
      Velocity will ALWAYS change with temperature. When we find a load that shoots well, we want to test it's "forgiveness" as far as powder charge. So once you think you have something stable. Ladder the powder up and down to see how far you can go until it falls apart. THAT will tell you how much temp forgiveness you have.
      So if you find the load at 80 degrees and 57.5grs shot well. But you ladder up and down and find that it stays together between 57.3 and 58.2. Then as it gets colder, you want to load higher than 57.5, to keep you in that "velocity band" that shoots well.
      Benchrest shooters do this same thing. But if they shoot 4 matches in a day, they will shoot a different charge weight each match, because the temperature is changing throughout the day.
      The BEST thing you can do, is do that ladder up and down testing AT THE TEMPS you expect to hunt in, and see what shoots best.
      Some loads are very forgiving and will stay together for .8grs of powder and others are a very narrow .3gr. You need to be willing to sacrifice a little velocity to find a FORGIVING window.
      Or lower your standards and stay near max velocity and just try to keep it under 1 inch or 3/4" or whatever. Like we did with the 28 Nosler. Screaming fast and "good enough" precision.

    • @LittleCrowGunworks
      @LittleCrowGunworks  2 дні тому +2

      It's not all burning in a 280AI, but if it shoots... send'er down the road. I love N560. I think it would have had a better showing in this series if we were working with seasoned barrels when we started.

    • @brinkerhoff8
      @brinkerhoff8 2 дні тому +4

      For better or worse the load I'm referring to is for a 6.5 PRC. I knew even the temp stable powders have some sensitivity but I about lost my shit when the fps dropped by 50+ and groups went to pot. I'll try more powder this weekend when it is in the 40s and 50s in the morning to see what happens.
      Keep the videos coming. Best and most real gun channel I've found

    • @LittleCrowGunworks
      @LittleCrowGunworks  2 дні тому +1

      @brinkerhoff8 if the gun was warm when you found that 2950 group then it was likely artificial. Meaning the only reason you reached that velocity with THAT charge weight is because it was 80° AND the gun was already warm when you shot it. So you get all excited and take it out later and shoot it from a cold bore in colder weather and it's slower and falls apart.
      Is that an accurate description of what happened?

    Your 7mm/284 content is interesting and thorough. I for sure agree that h1000 is way too slow for the 280ai but most of the powders you used are a bit too fast for the 160 grain in a 280 and would be better suited to 140 or 145 grain bullets. Powders like staball 6.5, reloader R19, Hunter, n160 are similar or just a tad slower than n550 and would probably be near optimal. N560, H4831, r22, r23, Superformance.... would be the slowest powders which could work. Powders with too fast of a burn rate can leave too much room in the case or an error in reloading/over filling a case can cause extreme Pressure spikes. Powders like h1000 even compressed, won't achieve enough pressure or velocity for this case but are "safe" in that you can't really overfill the case. I prefer powders, which when they start to compress, are too hot for good case life but won't cause case failures or injury; when you back off the load 1.5 to 2.5 percent (1 to 2 grains), its optimall for Pressure, case fill and velocity. Basically its burn rate optimization for that particular case and bullet. I have Gordons guide on my laptop but haven't used it much because i have good powder knowledge and i like to experiment based on my years of loading, but it seems like a legit program. Thanks again for your efforts and hardwork on all of these 7mm cartridges.

    • @LittleCrowGunworks
      @LittleCrowGunworks  2 дні тому +2

      @thebryguy96 agreed on all points. However, I WONT use ball powder and most people with a 280AI will have a 24" barrel, which would make my powders optimal. I couldn't JUST test N160. So I used powders that are relevant for MOST people.

    • @thebryguy96
      @thebryguy96 20 годин тому

      @LittleCrowGunworks how often would or should a very experienced shooter like yourself use Gordon's tool vs. using your years of knowledge and deferring to your hands-on experience? When you say ba powder, do you mean a ball powder like staball 6.5? It's also an excellent powder in a 270-win with a 130 gr bullet. I would guess N555 to be very similar. I tried n160 for the first time in a 243 improved with a 109 berger for targets, and coyote. It was also effective. N555 was a bit compressed but consistent. Staball 6.5 and n160 worked a bit better. N550 was a tad too fast of a burn rate for this heavier bullet. The 243 improved seemed very similar to a 280 ai in the powders it liked.
      Btw, I have 8 or 9 of the little crow trimmers, and I am very pleased. I called your shop this spring, and the founder/owner was very helpful in answering questions I had regarding a wildcat cartridge. Thank you.
      Regarding copper, I am a huge fan of a 145 grain cutting edge laser, 145 grain badlands, and a 143 Mcguire in my 7ss using n560. We shoot the 168 lrx at 3010 fps in my friends 7 prc. The 160 lrx came out right after we developed the 168 load using h4831sc. I have never had a barnes tsx or ttsx fail me in my 22-250, 6.5-06, 270 wby, 300 borden, or 375 h and h on any animal. I have not shot any animals with a cx or terminal ascent, but they should be top shelf too. I haven't watched every video in your 7mm series, but it appears you have excellent knowledge and you give accurate and sincere advice.
