    Most people who say this, and there are plenty, usually have bad sharpening technique. A competent sharpener who is prepared to take their time can get a sharp edge on any stone of any type, diamond included. A lot of people, especially those new to diamond sharpening use far too much pressure, that is usually the problem.

      Yeah it's crazy to even think that you couldn't do this but I had to do a quick video to prove it 😂 the post annoyed me too much.

    Stroppy, thanks for this informative vid. I have been seriously considering a DMT bench stone, about a 1000 grit for quick touch ups in the kitchen. However, I haven't done so because of the numerous amount of negative feedback over on reddit.

      Thanks for the feedback! Yeah a lot of the information about sharpening from the guys on Reddit is very questionable. Most of those guys don't know what they're talking about and they all echo the same nonsense. A couple of them do give solid advice though. 👍

    DMT Continuous surface plates and ceramics are my goto. The more you keep a knife honed up and stropped when it starts to get dull, the less you sharpen and the less Steel you use up

    I enjoy diamond plates a lot ! My favourite way of sharpening I’ve been able to get a hair popping sharp edge on my Victorinox Spartan with my work sharp field sharpener

      Good job 👍 the work sharp field sharpener is a great bit of kit for the money. Diamond plates are certainly the winners in terms of maintenance too, no flattening or dressing required.

    I really appreciate that you keep your vid's free of fluff. It's very annoying to sit through a ten minute vid' to get 2 min's of info, to say the least. May I ask you a question? What brand of 8" diamond plates under $150.00 would you reccommend for wood carving tool sharpening? Mora 106 carving knives, Pfeil gouges etc? Thanks.

      It's difficult for me to make short videos while still getting lots of information into them, I end up with 30 minutes of footage and I cut out 85% of it 😅.
      In regards to diamond plates it going to involve some personal preference again. From my experience the Atoma plates always start off with the most consistent scratch pattern whereas the others need breaking in (not a big deal).
      The bonding of the diamond to the nickle with Atomas also seem to last longer from my experience however I'm not sure if they're enough better to justify the price.
      DMT is an affordable alternative if you go for their 6x2" option rather than the 8x3. Ultra sharp are also good value (if you're in the US). If you're just getting started then I'd probably just pick up anything cheap and it will last long enough to learn as long as you don't apply too much pressure. (let the diamonds do the work, increased pressure will fracture the diamond across the cleavage plane preemptively and also pull the diamonds from the bonding.)
      After some practice on cheaper stuff I think my suggestion would be to buy 1 Atoma plate and 1 Atoma replacement sheet in a different grit. The sheets are £20 cheaper than the full plate, you can stick it on the other side and have a double sided Atoma with 2 different grits for under $100.

      @@stroppystuff641 Thanks very much! Just as in your video's you provided the expert, detailed information needed to make an informed choice. In my experience, that is very uncommon on UA-cam. I would be very surprised if your channel does not blow up and become a huge go-to channel for serious hand tool sharpeners - if that is in fact a goal of yours. I appreciate your efforts!

      Unfortunately I don't have any swords, I imagine you might need to sharpen it in portions, like the bottom, then the middle then the tip. I'm sure there are lots of good sword sharpeners around here that you can probably find though. Good luck 👍

    See how he said makes sure he gets an apex ? I was making the mistake of not doing that and moving forward but now it s a breeze with a magnifier and the right tools with the right knowledge and practice . It takes practice on a few then you ll be good for the rest of your life so it’s a good thing to learn

    How long do you think diamond plates tend to last? I cant get a atoma where I live. How long would you expect a dmt coarse to last?

    • @stroppystuff641
      @stroppystuff641  11 місяців тому

      Depends how you use it and how much you use it. If you use it for lapping stones it won't last a hugely long time. If you apply gorilla levels of pressure it won't last a hugely long time.
      If you sharpen a couple times a week with a normal amount of pressure then they will last you a good long time 👍 I've had my Atoma for over a year, used them a lot and they still feel really fresh. My DMT lasted around a year or so

      @@stroppystuff641 Hmm. So I cant get atoma's where I live. What would be my best bet for a durable stone? A dmt or something like a shapton 120 / 220 / 320 pro or glass? I sharpen kitchen knives, the highest being 58 hrc and the rest below that.

    You switch hands for each side.. Are you naturally somewhat ambidextrous? I’ve tried forcing myself to learn that because I see advantages but the left hand is a total shit show. every. single. time.

    • @stroppystuff641
      @stroppystuff641  2 роки тому

      I was totally crap to start with too. I spoke to a couple pros and they all advised me to learn it sooner than later. It's important to be able to see the contact of the apex with the stone, which you can only do when the edge is facing towards you which means you need to switch hands.
