How to load a strop with Stroppy Stuff diamond compound
I have a couple of dc4’s. Both the newer style. Both work very well. For a £16 sharpening stone I’m not sure how anyone can complain about them. They get all my knives hair shaving sharp in a few passes. I agree with you on the strop, best to have a separate strop. However the leather case works in a pinch when out and about.
How do you make sure not to round the apex?
ive had one of these things for a while now and its nice being told many years later that i actually made the right choice going with the worksharp over a dc4. Just too bad i cant buy just replacement plates locally, if i want new plates ill have to buy a whole new system.
Does this also work to remove green buffing compound from a strop, like chromium oxide?
I appreciate this video, i have been looking into buying my first more expensive EDC and saw a few reddit threads talking about sharpening the edge all the way down. Your video shed some light for me, and i plan on buying the paramilitary 2 soon
Can a burr whittle hair because I used a flash light on my knife edge thier was light reflecting except it was extremely faint, which leans me to believe it just the serrations.
what was the grit final stone?
Incredibly well done video with lots of information
Hi, along with your 1, 0.5 and 0.25 micron compounds, I also bought your 0.1 micron one. I honestly don't know what I'm gonna do with it other than do some experiments. Can you kindly give me real world uses for the 0.25 and 0.1 micron compounds? Thank you!
@@NineZeta they give a huge bump in keenness. 0.25 is great for any use case and is my personal favourite. 0.1 is good for razors. Any knife is better sharper, and 0.25 finished knives will be sharper than when finished only at 1um. So 0.25 real world use is every knife.
WorkSharp Ken Onion Edition with the Blade grinding attachment for the win! I like using stones, but they can be very time consuming when having to redo a chipped or rolled edge! I also have not found any serious difference between stones and a belt set-up if you are doing it properly and can get very, very sharp edges that easily cut paper towels and can shave without taking off any skin. Highly suggest looking at Curry Custom Cutlery's channel. Having used some of his stuff and using some of his techniques, I can solidly say he does a very good job and knows what he is talking about! Sincerely, JS
Awesome video, learned a lot. Thank You!
Très très intéressant et utile, vraiment bien realisé,Merci et bravo ! Really really interesting and usefull, nicely done,BIG thanks and Bravo ! Max.
Bark River catching strays universally it seems. I got a nice lil Bravo EDC in Elmax way back, convex of course and fanciest potato peeler in the draw. I’m sure that most lovers of Scandi & Flat edge have one ruined convex bladed knife tucked away somewhere.
I have two kunwu knives and love them. I bought my buddy the kunwu compact chad for Christmas and it’s so nice I almost kept it and bought another for him 😂
Always good to see another technique. thx!
bummer, just ran into your video, I have 6 micro Stroppy coming recommended by Neeve Knifes, I'm a beginner.
@@chrisflamion2283 6 micron is fine for a beginner. I didn't do a good job of explaining myself in this video. Imo 6 micron is bad for advanced sharpeners not bad for beginners
i purchased .25um 30ml stroppy stuff and 1um and the 4um. i use ultra sharp diamond stones ending with the 3000 grit. I find i get my best results starting with the 1um and ending with the .25um. How many strokes per side would you recommend with each? thx 🙏
Any update on how you like the pdt plates?
Everyone should have a magnification device that is 40-90x. Even if you only have a 10 or 20x cheap jeweler’s on loupe you can see so much more and don’t have to do all that guessing. It makes a huge difference in your sharpening!
@stroppystuff641 Also, any news on the vitrified stones you're working on? I have read elsewhere that you are trying to develop something similar to or in line with the FSK 'super' vitrified stones. Thanks
@stroppystuff641 Do you have any comments on microbeveling with the Atoma stones-versus a DMT or any other continuous surface diamond plate? I know/have read that the Atoma in 1200 grit has a more consistent scratch pattern than the DMT 1200 (extra fine) but obviously the checkered pattern of the diamonds on the Atoma could present a slight issue in microbeveling. I imagine with very light force (just enough to microbevel) and a little concentration it is do-able...but you might have more experience having used it. Thanks
Also, i think technically + or - 3 rockwell points is within spec for most companies
@@jusme8060 but not this one. It was out of spec as defined by the advertising materials.
@@jusme8060 this particular knife was 63-64 spec.the sprint run they did
Yeah, i guess within 2 points is common practice with knife compaines and to be iso certified test says 2% variance. I bet most companies are doing that. I've had bad knives with the right hardness though. Like you said, false advertising though. I get it.
Ive enjoyed my softer ones more to be honest. Only tactile had good magnacut for me so far. Im not impressed with most " super" steels though. Im liking more traditional steels now. The steel snob in me completely died with my rex 121 sage 5. I hate that steel
Lol stop......after the end of the day, its just a bark river knife! What knives do you hold dearley then? Not that im fixed on brk but id really love to know qhat other knives will outperform them please and ty
Can you also test this with 0.1 microns?
Thanks for your honest review
Ridiculous why would I throw it away? If I owned it already, it retails for $200 it’s like throwing $200 in the trash, let’s be reasonable, you may not like the knife, but throwing it away is not the solution.
Very interesting
Good video Sir. One question, what is the name of your flashlight?
I think it's an Olight Baton 3
Great vid
Fantastic video, thank you. Is there a best angle for stropping? Do you need to replicate what you did on the stone or is it more forgiving?
@@benmjt it's not really more forgiving. If you go steeper than your sharpening angle then you'll round your edge. You should strop at the same angle as you sharpened and use gentle pressure
@ That’s great, thank you.
So you ruined it and blamed Fsllkniven
Does it have to be basswood or can another wood be used?
Awesome thanks !
Thanks for the great advice !
I am going to try vegetable/food safe mineral oil and Lapidary mono crystalline powder. Much cheaper. I am going to give it the ole college try. Can’t hurt for less than 5 bucks.
@@judgetoogood1033 it will work fine, but you'll have a strop covered in greasy oil which will go rancid. So the abrasion will happen, but it will be a very unenjoyable experience.
Stuff is too expensive…. 😂😂😂
This is a new trick in my arsenal! I’m not push cutting paper towels yet but really close. Thank you for the trick it really helped!
What does 62 HRC get you vs 60 HRC? Other than they specified a hardness that did not meet their claim.
What is the equipment that you used to check the sharpness?
Thought I’d treat myself to one of your strips for Xmas but all sold out. Bummer! Hope you are ok and recovering well
Thanks for the support! I've just ordered a lot of leather so I should be making some again shortly
I have the 1 micron and 0.25 on its way. Throughout my searches, I have found compounds that are 1/40 of a micron, and I am curious if you see any use for such a fine compound when it comes to refining an edge.
I really appreciate your channel and would love to see more advanced sharpening techniques and content with regards to the finer points of sharpening, stropping and compounds. I've tried to duplicate the test in this video but find that my edges don't seem to respond as drastically as yours do when switching between strops. My edges seem to plateau in sharpness regardless of the sub micron compound used. By hand I'm struggling to push beyond the sub 100 Bess score. I'd love to hear you talk more specifically about what you're feeling on the strop and what to watch for when aspiring to create the sharpest edges. I'm removing all visible signs of burr on my finest stones to the point that no burr can be detected under illumination and 30 X magnification. I then typically strop on 3 µm, 1 µm and .5 µm , .25 µm stropy stuff. Love to hear any advice you have on these finer points as the Internet is filled with basic sharpening instructions but I struggle to find good content when seeking to achieve maximum sharpness.
great... bought a dmt 6 micron dia paste one week ago, wish i watched this sooner-
@@That_one_and_only_username I think I need to take this video down because I didn't explain very well. If you do a superb job with the stones 6um won't help, if you do an average job on the stones, 6um will help
@stroppystuff641 definitly gonna help then, thanks for clarification
The earliest image I've seen of a steel was a painting of two butchers in their shop, steel hanging from one man's belt from the 15th century. A tool doesn't stick around for 6 centuries unless it works.
Great video, I'm just getting into sharpening a few months in now. Got recommended your channel and have been learning a lot.
This has helped me tremendously. Thank you.
I'm glad you found it helpful! Thanks for the feedback
Do you only recommend grain side. I've never like flesh side but see many people recommending flesh. I Noticed you said for diamond emulsion to use grain side so what would you use flesh side for? Thanks.
I don't like using flesh side for anything
@@stroppystuff641 Thank you, appreciate it.
