Would be good to know what micron size suits what end purpose. Clearly the smaller the more refined, but to those on a budget, what is the best single size, or size progression for the money? Say for kitchen knives.
So you’re only looking for one micron size? I personally use the 0.5 micron most often as an all purpose. Most popular sizes are 6, 3, 1 and 0.5 micron. What’s the highest grit stone you’re using?
I’d like to know also. Im slowly broadening the number of stones I have, but currently I’m finishing anywhere between 600-1200 grit. Occasionally a little toothier but normally 6-12 for now.
@@pullingthestrings5233 hey I appreciate it! Funny enough, after I left that comment, I went and ordered some Gunny Juice and accidentally ordered the .5, then returned it and bought the 6 haha! But I’ll probably purchase the .5 again soon. Thanks again, I appreciate the input!
If I may ask, should I use Gunny Juice 6 or 3 micron on leather stop after finishing with CGSW resin bonded diamond stones 10 micron? Unsure if both of your brands have the same/close micron rating. Looking for keen, cutting edge (not mirror), just a good finishing emulsion to use for pm / high rockwell steels. Thanks in advance for advice.

I'm sharpening using a Lansky precision system using natural Arkansas stones. The finishing stone is Black Arkansas and equivalent to 1200 grit US or 4000 grit Japanese. I would like to use one strop and be done. Whats the finest diamond grit that you think I could jump to?
3 or 1 micron depending on the scratches left after the Arkansas. Everyone will remove scratches differently. If you have few to no visible scratches go with the 1. If you have some scratches go with the 3 micron
Good afternoon. I sharpen on a Ken onion work sharp grinding attachment. The finer belts are 3000 and 12000 grit. I usually stop on the 3000 grit and use the bark river black and green compound. I read that the diamond emulsions are light years better so I’m making the switch. Which emulsions do you recommend for bringing a used, not dull, edge back to a razor sharp edge? I was thinking the 6 and 3 for maintenance. Your advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
I would go with the 3 micron. Be careful when putting it on the belt. The emulsions come out in beads like mercury. It’s due to the surface tension on the liquid. Once the surface tension is broken then it acts like any other liquid.

@@thorwaldjohanson2526 I’m sorry I just seen this. The 3, 1 or 0.5 works well as an all purpose. Never a Dull Moment UA-cam channel did some independent testing of my 0.5um with a factory knife fresh out of the box. The BESS sharpness test score dropped by around 100 points I believe. With a few passes on each side. He also did a test comparing it side by side with the 2 closest competitors at the time. I will let you look up the videos. As I don’t compare my product to others personally. I feel that would come across as me being biased instead of impartial and fair. I still review other products where I give an honest assessment of products I review. Integrity is important to me. So I try to make sure that comes first. The truth is important. That’s why I don’t monetize this channel. I don’t want people to think that I would ever allow money to skew my honesty. I have no issues with others making a comparison test that are fair to my competitors and myself. Competition is good for the industry. That being said 3 will get the edge back a little faster. The 1 or 0.5 will refine further. The smaller microns roll around in between the micro serrations that are at the apex. This allows the diamonds to polish and cut in between those serrations or teeth

I was planning to buy 3 micron and 1 micron bottles come Christmas. The plan was to use 3 micron to get rid of any remaining burr and to initiate the refinement process, with 1 micron being my finishing compound. This would happen coming off of an 800 grit stone for an aggressive edge. Do you have any opinions on why this may be ideal, or something that I should do differently? (this would be for pocket knives, in generally exotic steels like S90v)
This would work nicely. I have come off of 600 grit and went straight to 0.5 micron for a nice toothy edge. Never A Dull Moment has proven the 0.5 in that YT channel too. You can even go straight to the 1 or stop at the 3 and I think that you would be pleased.
Hey mate, I'm wondering which compounds you would recommend. I freehand on Venev diamond up to 2000 grit and have a ken onion worksharp with grinding attachment (1x18 all belts). I have always had good luck with my black/green/white bar compounds but interested in trying out the diamond emulsion world and yours comes highly recommended. Happy to buy a couple of double-sided strops and 4 different levels to go with them (side note, any recommended strops?). Sorry for all the questions and don't worry if you don't have the time to answer haha. I'm potentially interested in a polishing strop and a maintenance strop, if that makes sense.
So coming off the 2K Venev you will want a 1 micron or lower. The 2k is a 1 micron stone, but it tends to leave scratches larger than 1 micron. So starting with the 1 micron juice should help you get rid of those. And the lower you go in progression the brighter the polish gets.
@@GunnysSharptalk So say someone was to get the 12, 3, 1 and the 0.5 You recommend the kangaroo only for the 0.5 and like cowhide for the 12, 3 and 1 micron? Thanks.
I like Gunny Cloth, basswood or balsa for Gunny Juice under 1 micron. Leather is great for 1 micron and up. So if you drop to 0.5 after the stones my personal preference is something other than leather. You still get great results on leather. I just get better performance when I switch to something other than leather when I get below 1 micron
Hey gunny. Just wondering what you would recommend for a very aggressive edge that bites a lot but well apexed without rounding it with 100 strokes it takes to get there? I am currently using eze lap 400 grit diamond stone. I'm not the best but get an arm hair shaving knife but not amazingly clean. What would you recommend to keep the aggressive micro teeth on the edge? And what platform would you recommend using it on, leather balsa etc? And also, does the finer micron juice give less "bite" and knock off the micro teeth off? Thanks a lot mate. So sorry for all the questions haha
Gunny Juice is designed to keep bite with all micron size abrasives. In your case I think that you would be happy with the 12 or 9 micron. Use it on leather or basswood. And I don’t mind questions. I am happy to help
@@GunnysSharptalk awesome thanks so much. I have asked you questions before and you're always amazing at answering! I have a green veritas compound however I have heard that it isn't actually a one micron but more of a 3. However it doesn't polish the edge but just seems to take off the teeth and the bite. Do you know of this compound and if its absolutely rubbish? Thanks so much mate i appreciate it!
@@Firefoxtony I have used it a longtime ago. There’s a fine line with concentration with any compounds. You need them to cut and polish without over refining the edge. Too high of a concentration and you don’t get as good of a polish. Too low and you get no polish. And the concentration that gives the best polish doesn’t give you the best cutting edge. So in creating a good compound you have to find that sweet spot in the concentration. Most haven’t found it or if they have they don’t hit it. Some don’t hit that sweet spot because it cuts into their profit margins too much. That and most compounds were actually designed for purposes other than knife sharpening.
@@GunnysSharptalk ah that's awesome thanks so much mate I appreciate your help. And do you think diamonds give a lot more toothy edge compared to chromium oxide etc?
Hi, Scott, have your 1, 3 and 6. Work great! I noticed on DLT Trading they have GJ in a 12 micron. What would you approximate the JIS grit rating on your 12 to be and would use that or your 9, and in what progression, if you're going for a toothy finish? Thanks!
Great video with good information. So my question is, i finally got proficient and good at sharpening with stones so now im focusing on aesthetics. I end on a 6000 grit stone which leaves a beautiful mirror, would your 1 micron emulsion make a noticeable difference in how brilliant the polish is considering 6k already leaves a non-perfect mirror? or would you perhaps recommend going from 6k to 0.5 or 0.25 micron?
Yes. I guarantee that your mirror clarity improves with every micron size below that. You can jump to 0.5, but the 1 micron should cleanup any visible scratches Left. Unless they’re deep scratches

Hello, I have a KME and I either end at 600 grit stone or the 1500 grit stone. I’m gonna get 2 gunny juice bottles, which one would be best for each grit stone?
Great video! I am about to get a two sided strop from DLT and was wondering what compounds would work best and what leather finish you would recommend for both as it is selectable (rough or smooth). All of my knives come off of my KME with either a 600 or 1500 grit finish from their diamond stones. TIA!
No. The nanocloth from Jende are little honeycombs that are 30-50 micron. They’re all the same size honeycombs. They just put sizes to help you keep from mixing them up.
Great videos as always........Just curious, a straight razor sharpened with a 10,000 to a 12.000 grit and stropped with some green stropping compound gives you a super sharp razor. So the question is what does sharpening a knife to a finer grit really get you in terms of functional sharpness.
Thanks. It’s been proven sharper cuts longer. Plus you get smoother cuts. Now most people over refine the apex when going really fine. So they get a blade that doesn’t cut as well. So I should say when sharpened properly sharper cuts longer. Why? Because the apex is thinner. It might damage easier but it still cuts better. Look at a box cutter. It cuts long after it’s damaged or the edge is technically dull because it’s thin. So going to finer grits thin the apex which allows the apex to move through material more efficiently

Heard a lot of good things about Gunny Juice. What is your opinion about using Gunny Juice on the smooth side leather strop and a Jende Industries Nanocloth strop?
Jende nanocloth strops suuuuuck. Wasted more than half a bottle of each gunny 10ml 0.1, 0.25 and 1 micron to load them all for barely any reward. I honestly thought gunny juice was trash until I put it on some basswood and saw the best edge I ever put on a knife. Compared gunny with stroppy stuff, tech diamonds and a few others, the only one to come close was stroppy stuff. This shit is the best on the market, I think the best way to use it is with wood strop flattened with a hand plane finish. Only weird thing is my 1 micron gunny juice takes out scratches and leaves a crazy polish, then my 0.5 micron gunny juice puts small scratches in that polish. Maybe bad batch maybe not but seems odd....
If I come of a 600 diamond stone grit what would you recommend as far as microns go... I don't care about polished edges I just want a sharp utility folder...
Hi, thanks for the video. Currently my highest stone is 4K. I was thinking of adding an 8K to 10K stone. Do you think it is worth getting such a stone or just going to the 3 micron emulsion and stropping? When stopping what progression is recommended eg 3, 0.5, 0.1 or other? Is it okay to jump increments or are all needed to be effective? Also, what type of stop do you find works best with Gunny Juice eg Kangaroo, cow, balsa, Shell Cordovan, nanocloth? I was looking at the range from Gritomatic. Thanks again, Tom
A stone is worth it for some. If you get an 8K or 10k stone go with the 1 micron Gunny Juice. You can jump micron sizes, but for best results the juice was designed to follow the progression available
My highest at the moment is 5k chosera or a 4k shapton and the 3 micron on nanocloth has been great to finish. It leaves a polished edge with a crisp almost aggressive edge. So where is the guidance on "what micron size Gunny Juice" I should buy? Also, none of those are JIS grit standards. A grit number like 3000 isn't a measurement or scale, it is an index to a discrete standard that has several stand alone parameters. An index in a 100 page book won't direct you to page "35+1/4" or page 130.
Most companies grit sizes vary. That’s why I don’t like to use grit sizing and use microns. A micron is a specific particle size. Just because the particle sizes land in between JIS doesn’t mean you can’t approximate what emulsion to use next. Grit are all approximations. You don’t have a single manufacturer that guarantees every particle is of the same size. With my products you will get the tightest particle size specs in the business. Use the micron size to determine what to use next. I would be more than happy to help you if you tell me what stones you are using? What’s the highest grit? And what your goals are?
@@GunnysSharptalk My point was that the video didn't seem to cover what the title claims, at least how I read it. I have a wide mix from kitchen to chisels to razors, as well as a mix of stones, and just needed a general reference to get started with loaded strops. Anyhow I just bought a cheap veniv sample pack of many different micron pastes to get in the ballpark and then I'll try your spray of that micron size. I have no issue with you using mean micron size [and deviation] for your product as the only industrial grit standard that could go that fine is Russian GOST which is basically just micron size anyway. ANSI/ISO bonded stop at F2000, JIS 8000 and iso coated P5000, so any "grit number" above these is totally arbitrary marketing nonsense. The industrial standard grit number is not a measurement. Each number is a stand alone discrete standard, JIS does not publish an 1800 grit therefor you cannot have a JIS-1800. It is like somebody saying they own a ford F 180 pickup. There are only f100 f150 f200 and f250 models, these are discrete reference numbers not measurements.
@@mytech6779 the only reason I assigned any grit number at all was due to request. The 3 micron is a good all around size to start. It’s low enough you can get a polish and larger enough to work with a “toothy” edge sharpened.

@@richvillacres2793 I would stick with what you have if you sharpen to 10,000 grit. Yes 6 is going backwards. Now the 12, 9, 6 and 3 are all great for touch ups, but so is what you have. Occasionally I will use the 3 micron for a touch up but rarely. So if I were you I would stick with what I have. Unless you purely want to experiment.
He did. "What emulsion should I buy?" was the question, and the answer is "What grit equivalent are you looking for?" 9 micron=1800 grit 6 micron=3200 grit 3 micron=7000 1 micron=16,000 grit 0.5 micron=32,000 grit 0.25 micron=65,000 grit And .1 micron=170,000 grit Anything below 1 micron is polishing. If you need to sharpen, 9 or 6 will work, 3 would be razor sharp. Anything beyond that is polishing the edge to a very fine degree.

As far as strops Roo works really well with the lower micron sizes. Leather is good, but I prefer it for 1 micron and up.

So if I'm going to get CBN stones all the way up to 5000, the 1 micron (16k) would make sense to finish the edge on leather?

Hi, Scott, have your 1, 3 and 6. Work great! I noticed on DLT Trading they have GJ in a 12 micron. What would you approximate the JIS grit rating on your 12 to be and would use that or your 9, and in what progression, if you're going for a toothy finish? Thanks!
Either give a decent toothy finish. The 12 micron is roughly 1k Grit JIS.

Sounds like i could come off my Spyderco UF and go to 0.5 micron and be done.
You can definitely. If you want the best mirror possible I would go 1 then 0.5.
Um like....um
You didn't explain anything!
He did. "What emulsion should I buy?" was the question, and the answer is "What grit equivalent are you looking for?"
9 micron=1800 grit
6 micron=3200 grit
3 micron=7000
1 micron=16,000 grit
0.5 micron=32,000 grit
0.25 micron=65,000 grit
And .1 micron=170,000 grit
Anything below 1 micron is polishing. If you need to sharpen, 9 or 6 will work, 3 would be razor sharp. Anything beyond that is polishing the edge to a very fine degree.
