Jonny mentions that people complaining about the use of minerals for the batteries, blah blah blah, will be using laptops and mobile phones. Just how many more minerals and heavy metals does the battery for a car have compared to a laptop? I have a theory about these. I don’t think Kia really cares how many of these it sells. Sure it will be chuffed if it does sell a few. But I think the real purpose of this is as a statement of intent from Kia. It’s about putting an EV stake in the ground and saying, this is what we do. I think that’s quite bold and shows real confidence.
Kia/Hyundai have nailed it in the last couple of years. The South Koreans are really hitting the ball out of the park with their design, technology and efficiency.
Always entertaining, and yes, the weather is awful. The only thing I thought about these 7 heaters was .. what if the car was hit from behind and the third row of seats? With some the persons head could be resting on the back window.? But with KIA I don't think they are restricted by constantly bringing in a required car look or heritage look? That tree's them surely to reinvent which is surely liberating to their designers? Great show again
Kia have designed this mainly for the American market where it will sell well. Size isn’t a problem there with their wide roads and large parking spaces. Not like UK still keeping parking space size designed around the original 1959 Mini. Plus lots of narrow country lanes.
11:38 my wife always points out that a car with a big space in or under the console is perfect for a handbag, so it's not always in a potentially dirty passenger footwell. She also points out all male car reviewers miss that feature 😂
As far as I can tell, it's roughly the same weight as a gas-powered Range Rover. I think that's important to point out as you keep mentioning how heavy the ev9 is.
The fold flat seats are a nice trick. Everyone here in the states wants a big honking Yukon, but if you actually have to haul anything in the back, the seats dont actually fold flat so its a pain in the butt to actually use it for practical stuff.
@@Low760 Not sure if you are commenting on the wrong thread, but Im pretty sure that the terrible design choices of the interiors of most oversized gas-guzzling SUVs have nothing to do with emissions rules.
I am now an EV driver and I get some of the nonsense about 'they're not actually green' from people. I'm not driving it to be green as such, it just makes massive amounts of sense. I also like to point out that 140+ years of car manufacture, exhaust emission and 'big oil' have been super green so far, yes?
I've had the "you do realise you're not actually saving the planet, don't you?". I always reply by saying " I didn't get it to save the planet - I got it to swap my £200+ per Month petrol bill to around £30 per Month on electricity, which it does" (Incidentally, they never believe this). And if they're still listening, I sometimes add " servicing is cheaper too - I paid £68 for my last service"........
It’s leased. I would not buy one with battery tech changing constantly and second hand prices all over the place. This was to try it out and for someone who rarely does long journeys at short notice it is brilliant. Costs far less to run than my Honda did, is far quicker and the stereo is great.
Wow. You have to admire the honesty and the fact that Jonny holds a mirror up to all of us in terms of what is we really want from a car? Me, I will never buy the EV9, my days of lugging kids and their friends from x to y have long gone. However, I love cars and value the insights we get when someone like Jonny does a review. Me, sans children and no grandchildren anywhere in sight, I'm holding out for an R5 electric for a much more appropriate level of self indulgence. Hint hint Jonny. Love your channel and your work ethic, thanks.
Your summary of the EV9, a big car that actually exploits its size with a large, accommodating and practical interior, reminds me so much of our old mark 1 Volvo XC90. It was a revelation when it was launched, the first 7 seat SUV to use a transverse engine and really exploit that difference. Similarly the EV9 seems to be the first big EV people carrier (except perhaps for the Tesla Model X) to really make the most of its skateboard platform. Great job, Kia, and I think you’ve shown not only Land Rover how to do it but Volvo too (the EX90 is insanely expensive and not as roomy as the EV9, I understand).
Jonny your car reviews are the best on UA-cam, clear easy to watch you keep it simple and entertaining for the viewers, and your barn finds are brilliant, keep it up mate, always a great watch.
Great Review Johnny .... I actually have owned one of these for almost 2 months now and covered 2500 miles and its excellent. I have the 6 seat GT S line version in the same colour you tested and it looks and drives really well. The annoying nagging safety alarms have been short cutted to a button on the steering wheel now and I can switch off what I want in about 20 seconds on start up so its less of a faff. I had a BMW iX before this and I never thought I would say that a KIA was a Rival to my BMW ... but it blows it away in all respects other than the badge snobbery (which i do have a bit of) ....cant recommend it enough.
A few years ago I had an Infiniti QX60 and the Kia reminds me of it with all the gadgets. I had the 360 cameras and rear seats that fold down at the touch of a button. The seats would also come back up with a button press, but Infiniti didn't bother with a way to electrically get the rear headrests back up. Not a problem , as all they seemed to achieve was an obscured rear view. Being an engineer I have to ask questions like "if you run the batteries down, and say, go on holiday, and come back and the batteries are totally dead - how do you get the charging flap open to charge the car? Now for something a bit more techie and a bit more interesting. If you have a bigger battery pack - you get more range, but the penalty is that you have to push a heavier vehicle with that extra capacity. This suggests that if a car is available with either a 75 kWh battery or a 100kWh battery, the increased range of the bigger heavier car will not be the expected 33% over the smaller one. How does it work and what increase would you expect to see? Does this suggest that we are not going to see the true benefits of bigger power packs and better range until battery weight is severely reduced?
It sounded like you were using a tornado tip on your jet wash (the buzzing sound). This absolutely, positively should NEVER be used on a vehicle. You're going to take paint off if you're not careful. That tip is for taking crap off brickwork and patio paving.
I’ve used the turbo tip on my Gerni pressure washer to wash my Tesla for 9 years without I’ll effects. You just need to hang back until there’s no sound coming from the panels of the car. Jonny was a bit close in areas but unlikely to have done any damage to a new car.
I feel the same about needlessly large SUVs (and how grating constant wind* is on the nerves). Looked forward to Jonny getting his hands on an EV9, because it would be about the most unbiased review going and wasn't disappointed. Good looking vehicle with well considered features. Far too large for my needs, but great for large families. * Environmental, not personal
I went from a 7 seater Renault Grand Scenic to a Skoda Enyaq. I really like the Enyaq but I do miss the towing as I need to move classic cars around on a trailer from time to time. Friends and friends of friends have been filling that gap…. (With diesel powered cars…) Good to see someone in the E.V. car world is listening!
It's a lovely car and my local dealership asked me to test 1 when i took my 7 seater diesel sorrento in for a service but i tow a 1.6 ton trailer. EVs still have a long way to go towing. I get nearly 300miles on a tank with the trailer. When an EV can get me from Newcastle to Bristol with 1.6 ton on the back then thats the time for me to go EV. Nice car and great review. 👍
I don't think you'll be kept waiting too long now......solid state batteries will probably meet your needs. Even with current battery tech, we're seeing ranges upwards of 300+ miles. Solid state could well add 50% to that.....plus the battery packs themselves will be physically smaller, lighter, and offer quicker charging.
Great review, Jonny. Not a fan of needlessly big cars either, but as the father of a 4-year-old and with twins on the way, I am more sympathetic than ever to the appeal of a genuine 7-seater. Not that I have a spare 70k hanging around, but if I did, I’d be tempted.
You need seven seats for a family of five? Do you split one of them in half? I have a family of five and we fit perfectly in a 5 seat large E class size wagon on trips. Heck, we fit in a Mazda3 for short trips.
1+2 is 3. You’ll be more than fine with an old V70 estate (boots cavernous, and you can just buy/rent a roof box for longer trips away) If you get a car with spare seats you’ll get roped into extra taxi duties with their mates too.
Nope. Certainly don’t need 7 seats but can see the appeal. Twins on one row and the older boy on the row behind so he can have some space from them on longer journeys. Also, have you seen the size of a double buggy?
Family of 5 here too. The size of baby chairs, diaper bags, double stroller etc and a7 seater starts to be really appealing. What if one kid wants a friend and you have the MIL staying with you
Nearly nearly went for an EV9 but Land Rover came through with my RR after 18 months of waiting. The only thing I wish it had, is a 22kWh inverter which given its size it should have as an option. I'm lucky to have 3 phase at home and with 22 kWh I could charge from flat to full in one night on off peak. The captain's chair 6 seater version looks like a lot of fun for a road trip. But its stand out feature is that 7 year warranty.
Good review Johnny. Whilst I agree enormous SUVs like this are quite ridiculous they have a market. People buy large Audi, BMW and Range Rover SUVs. Kia have demonstrated that an EV can be made into a competent large SUV, a market that was looking difficult until now. While the EV9 might not be quite as luxurious the prestige manufacturers now have to demonstrate they can make an SUV on an EV platform as good as this with all the same practicality of the Kia. If they can’t they will lose customers to Kia who are willing to sacrifice a bit of that luxury feel for a practical SUV that’s a good EV. Interesting times as EVs continue to be disruptive technology.
Love the practicality and aesthetics. Stress of Public charging on long journeys with dogs, kids, bikes luggage trailer for me will be the limiting factor when choosing a large family EV over, in my case, an 11 year old 2.5 diesel Volvo XC60 we had from new. Our BMW I3S does a perfect job of 99% of our journeys, gets charged at home - no stress. (Also my motorcycle has 350 mile range 😅)
The price stands comparison with Range Rovers, as most of those are £65k to £70k upwards.... plus this car has it's 7 year warranty. And that's something an RR owner can only dream about....
Jonny, I know it won't go to your head but you really are the most intelligent, comprehensive and pragmatic car reviewer on the whole of UA-cam. Thank you for your huge efforts in making such informative (and entertaining) reviews - and may you hit 1m subscibers very, very soon. You deserve it, sir.
Got one of these on order to replace my wife’s Sorrento. I’ve got the EV6 GT and wasn’t all that fussed about the EV9 one until I seen it in the flesh at dealership a few months back. It’s a nice looking car!
Your comment about we use similar batteries in our phones but never go on about that is exactly the pint we already heavily depend on such batteries so with millions of vehicles needing them as well just don't see where it will all come from without having a negative effect on our planet which is meant to be the reverse point of these EV'S ;it seems a well designed thought out vehicle but seeming as it 70k it bloody well should be don't u think?
The Kia EV6 here in Australia there knocking off $15,000 of the price because nobody’s buying them so hold on for a while and watch the price come down on the EV9
But it’s not been a remotely cold Winter. If we’re classing ‘cold’ as sub 10 degrees, then it’s been cold occasionally, so would be interested to see what the actual stats are for minus values. It’s been wet, mild and windy in The South of England but everyone needs heated steering wheels and seats and to leave their car engines running for no reason. At least you can’t leave your engine running on an EV!
Depends on where in the country you are, as some places have had consistent periods below 0C, etc... which coupled with the pervasive damp and windy weather, *definitely* feels cold and unpleasant.
Thank you as always, Jonny. My current two vehicles are a 2022 Mustang Mach-E GT and a 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid PHEV for times I need to haul 5+ adults. My hope is that, when my Mach-E lease ends in mid-2026, I may trade in the van and get one 7-seater EV to serve both roles. Not sure what Ford will offer in the category by then, but this would certainly be on my list to consider.
Land Rover (and the whole of the JLR group) needs to find a way of producing vehicles that are up at the top of the reliability lists instead of at the bottom. Looking good but without the reliability is just like dating a high maintenance model .. good for short time experience but not something for long term dating. When JLR starts having the confidence to give 7 year Warranties or the 10 year ones from my Lexus then they will worth considering.
I'm not in the market for one of these EV's, but if I was I would wholeheartedly pick this over the good ole Volvo counterparts. Another thoroughly entertaining review Jonny. Well done🙏
Loved this video. I drive an MY23 XC90 Recharge, need 7 seats for the family. I really wanted a good 7 seater EV, primarily I find them more relaxing to drive and a place to destress after work, but also for tax purposes. I will certainly have a look at the EV9 when I’m due to change, it’s not my dream car, but no 7 seater large vehicle will ever be. It’s there for now, as we need one (dream daily would be an Alpina B5 touring, green over tan). Thank for the brilliant reviews, interesting take on things, and well made videos.
Not sure i am ballsy enough to purchase one of these if i was a private Billy, but on a 2 yr lease through the business that we can have a tickle on VAT and Corporation tax etc, defo would. Styling and practicality wins over the e-tron.and EQ's etc... love the shape of it!

The range rovers and discover 3-4 (plus newer models) have been that weight for the last 15 years but no one makes a deal about them ....ahhh but then this is the anti christ of the Dino juicers.
Completely agree on your points about big cars with no space. Car companies seem to start off thinking "we need to make a big car", then the designers use all the tricks in the book to hide the size, which results in a vehicle with a huge footprint and no interior space. The scourge of the Sportback! The EV9 give the impression of being absolutely massive when you see it in person, but I think that's due to the angular design. In reality it's the same size as a Q7. It's also narrower than most big JLRs, X5/X7, GLE, Model X, etc.
Your comment on battery use in mobiles and laptops is not really relevant. Mobiles and laptops are not marketed as an environmentally friendly option, an electric car is.
You have hit the nail on the head with your comment about dog owners... having looked at alot of bigger EV's recently they do not have people like me in mind with a big dog box for two dogs, two kids and a ton of out door gear... seriously considering one of these when they are a bit cheaper secondhand...
A 5 seater with even bigger boot space would be great some of us want the space not the seats. Dont say buy a Van I dont want to listen to the echos from the back constantly.
Update: 76 grand for this featured one. That's a hard pill to swallow my friend. I'm sure it's fantastic in every way possible. These EV's are far far too expensive for the layman to afford. Dacias newest effort is very interesting. However, I'll be sticking with my Civic Tourer diesel for the foreseeable. Criminal that they stopped making them after 2017
The Kia Carnal (ok, Carnival) Im using in Oz is a total menace in the bong department.... I turn it all off. It's actually dangerous at times, clapping on full anchor mode at the merest whiff of a potential collision.
@@Low760 its the autosteer and lane control that are the issue. I use the Radar control cruise no problem, but the other systems are too nannying. Reversing off a 45 degree parking slot is a nightmare of unwanted brake application and beeps.

@@TheLateBrakeShow2-4 years?? A 7-seater EV MPV (for the few people who need to seat 7) that wasn't unnecessarily fast and huge would be a better idea. Terrifying that a family car this size is this fast, with acceleration that most buyers won't be used to.

I asked my family, what should I get when our Camry passes on? and they said, another Tarago. It is just so good for large families with pets and the 4 cylinder engine will do 400k . I know as my last was still running after 460k on the clock.

In my opinion this one is the embodiment of all of my issues with them. However I do enjoy you videos and it is always interesting to learn about these vehicles and may be one day I may change my mind. Your Renault 5 video came close.
-> Cost : EV's don't cost any more than the equivalent petrol or diesel cars ! -> Size : Vauxhall Corsa, Fiat 500e, Mini Electric are all small cars -> Convenience - if you can't charge at home they yes, public charging is expensive and more hassle. Otherwise, if you have a home drive then it's a no brainer ! -> Eco credentials: most of what you read/watch about EV's on this subject is click-bait nonsense. Charging at home and overnight the power is mostly coming from offshore wind. Batteries are recyclable after use (fuel is not), zero tailpipe emissions and efficient use of energy. EV running emissions is around 30g C02 per mile and improving every year. [Compared to about 430g C02 per mile for a fuel car, if you believe the emissions test data, plus the other pollutants coming out the back]
@@jonhoneyball194 It's a problem with the new Euro NCAP rules - cars need to have all those bonging and binging safety features to get the higher NCAP scores. Also, I think they are required to reactivate each time you leave and return to the car, so you keep having to turn off the settings you don't like. It's madness. It needs a driver memory function, so you just press 'Driver A' or B etc, and it automatically sets everything to your preferred on/off settings..
@manchegocheese997 they will be getting scrapped as a replacement battery will be worth more then the car. Same thing happened to the first pre-face lift model S you just don't see them anymore but I've seen loads of them in scrapyards.
“…needlessly large cars, especially SUVs whose exterior dimensions write cheques their cabins don’t usually cash”. Beautifully said, Jonny Interesting to hear your comments on the limited towing capacity of most EVs. I don't think this is a limitation of those EVs because they are irrelevant compared with the limitation of range and recharging speed inherent in EVs.
I'm just not sold on giant battery powered SUVs saving the planet. The raw materials for the batteries, the weight, damage to road surfaces, tyre wear and the % of fossil fuel electricity in the network. I'm also not sold on pricing ordinary people out of personal transport. Is this saving the planet or a stepping stone to a dystopian future where only the rich are free?
If it really is 2.6 tons, I'd have to say that's not too bad considering it's a full 7 seater with a BIG battery... Land Rovers have been around that or more as ICE cars for decades!
JS does it again with his attire matching the car. Grey/black/white ensemble reflecting the Kia colour choice. The car looks to be well suited towards JLR owners if they can get over their branding egos. The snow foam does show off the shapes well but lay off that Karcher lance or you’ll be down to the primer in no time.
Jonny, serious question - as good as this car seems to be and as many boxes it ticks, is this really worth £76k? I know this is an industry wide issue, and I do believe it to be an issue, the cost of new cars is obscene. Let's focus purely on this car as an example. It's clearly aimed at large families. How many large families are going to want to splash out £76k or £1k+pm? I'm not sure there's many. Then we take into account the residuals on EVs in general, it's far from cost effective. I'm a little surprised by how little reference there is to price in the comments. And finally, would people really take this over a Defender 130 with 10k on the clock? Yes, we know Landrover have a poor reliability (and theft) record but head to head, I think I know where the majority would go. Thoughts?
Look into why EV secondhand cars are falling out a favour which leads me to the next volvo has dropped making EV an it looks like other manufacturers are as well
EV residuals have been higher than piston for the past 5+ yrs. All residuals have recently dipped. Please also remember that running costs of EVs are far lower and the batteries are not degrading like so many doubters originally presumed.

Kia/Hyundai have nailed it in the last couple of years. The South Koreans are really hitting the ball out of the park with their design, technology and efficiency.
I agree. I’m driving a Kia Niro EV and it reminds of how VW used to be.

As far as I can tell, it's roughly the same weight as a gas-powered Range Rover. I think that's important to point out as you keep mentioning how heavy the ev9 is.

Correct. But the Range Rover will do 400 miles in any weather, takes 3 mins to refuel.

The fold flat seats are a nice trick. Everyone here in the states wants a big honking Yukon, but if you actually have to haul anything in the back, the seats dont actually fold flat so its a pain in the butt to actually use it for practical stuff.
That is because of emissions rules iirc
Wait to you try to sell it. It will be a big shock. Your 2nd and 3rd year insurance will be the final nail in the coffin.
Dude, your rants on the weather and wind are hilarious. I loved it! Hope you guys get some good weather there.
I‘m not into big suv‘s , but this one grows on me. I don‘t like the wheels but everything else is stunning
You don’t actually own it.

Whoops. Oh well.
Yep. Took the lacquer and top coat clean off the front bumper on my kid's 107. "Dad, can you get it repainted please?" Grrr!
I’ve used the turbo tip on my Gerni pressure washer to wash my Tesla for 9 years without I’ll effects. You just need to hang back until there’s no sound coming from the panels of the car. Jonny was a bit close in areas but unlikely to have done any damage to a new car.
I cant wait to buy it for 10K in 3 years😀
I feel the same about needlessly large SUVs (and how grating constant wind* is on the nerves). Looked forward to Jonny getting his hands on an EV9, because it would be about the most unbiased review going and wasn't disappointed. Good looking vehicle with well considered features. Far too large for my needs, but great for large families.
* Environmental, not personal
@@Brian-om2hh you won't get 300 miles with 1.6 tons behind the car with an EV. Lucky if you can get 100 miles with a Tesla X towing.
Haha fella that fitment for the power wash is the ground cleaner... Durable paint indeed! All the best, love you're content!
A superbly produced review of a clearly very impressive vehicle, but my Christ, the size...the looks...the price!
The price stands comparison with Range Rovers, as most of those are £65k to £70k upwards.... plus this car has it's 7 year warranty. And that's something an RR owner can only dream about....

There's something therapeutic about watching a car being washed, but even more so when Mr Smith is talking about it.
The Kia EV6 here in Australia there knocking off $15,000 of the price because nobody’s buying them so hold on for a while and watch the price come down on the EV9
Your rant at the wind was nearly as good as your rant at the non-opening charge port door on the VW e-up.
The Korean brands are killing their designs in the EV sector right now ❤
Great review Jonny, and the best bit is we know you are honest with your reviews. If you say it’s good, it’s good. 👍

Not a helmsman’s steering, so no track work; but how is it for palming???
Land Rover (and the whole of the JLR group) needs to find a way of producing vehicles that are up at the top of the reliability lists instead of at the bottom.
Looking good but without the reliability is just like dating a high maintenance model .. good for short time experience but not something for long term dating.
When JLR starts having the confidence to give 7 year Warranties or the 10 year ones from my Lexus then they will worth considering.
This has been built for the septic tanks. I’m sure they will love it.
Not big enough for the seppos
Don’t Kia have a 9 seater model built in the U.S. exclusively for their market called the Telluride?
I'm not in the market for one of these EV's, but if I was I would wholeheartedly pick this over the good ole Volvo counterparts.

And they still are relative to ICE counterparts.
A decent sized 5 seater would be nice, we had to buy a 7 seater as needed a car with full sized seats in the back

Multivan is good. Did you see our review of it?
I just don't get EV's on any level whether it is the cost , the size, the convenience or the false eco credentials.
-> Size : Vauxhall Corsa, Fiat 500e, Mini Electric are all small cars
-> Convenience - if you can't charge at home they yes, public charging is expensive and more hassle.

I cant move passed the price of £65,000 for a kia that will no doubt depreciate like throwing a stone off a cliff.
I also wonder about the longevity of these vehicles; i.e.what happens when it's 10 years old and needs a new battery?
@manchegocheese997 they will be getting scrapped as a replacement battery will be worth more then the car. Same thing happened to the first pre-face lift model S you just don't see them anymore but I've seen loads of them in scrapyards.
Seen a few of these on the road, a really nice looking motor in real life, look gangsta
No good for towing a 2t trailer, where would you charge it when towing?
Good point. That is an issue for charging positions at the moment.
“…needlessly large cars, especially SUVs whose exterior dimensions write cheques their cabins don’t usually cash”.
Beautifully said, Jonny
Interesting to hear your comments on the limited towing capacity of most EVs.
No
JS does it again with his attire matching the car. Grey/black/white ensemble reflecting the Kia colour choice.

Not as well as a Range Rover
Thoughts?
Thats mental money for a milk float

Look into why EV secondhand cars are falling out a favour which leads me to the next volvo has dropped making EV an it looks like other manufacturers are as well
EV residuals have been higher than piston for the past 5+ yrs. All residuals have recently dipped. Please also remember that running costs of EVs are far lower and the batteries are not degrading like so many doubters originally presumed.
