That whammy bar technique is really cool. It has a bit of an 80s shred-master feel to it. LaRocque also uses the technique, although much more subtle, in his solo for the Death song Trapped in a Corner.
I keep trying to think of how I can express how amazed I am by this. It's so good. Doesn't matter everyone knows. What a solo! Beautiful piece of music.
I really appreciate, no I adore Larocque's guitar work but please, people..go ahead and listen to 'The Eye', 'Them' and also 'Conspiracy'. Larocque simply defines guitar solos there in my opinion.
I love how he says “the King Diamond fans that we were” and then talks about how he never heard that sound with the whammy bar before, which is all over King Diamond albums prior to the Cold solo. Yes, I’m calling you out!
Just to clarify: by 0:12, Fredrik Nordstrom (the producer) explained that he wasn't aware that he was that famous (implying that he is not a king diamond fan). He asked him to play because the guys on At The Gates are fans of his playing... and that is what Tomas Lindberg said on minute 1:40. PD: Eventhough Tomas said that Anders Björler can play the solo now, the reality is that he TRY to replicate it, but way slower and simpler.
If anything, I think he get's better and better with each passing year, it's kinda crazy. Remember how his solo's sounded in the 80's compared to his solos in the 90's and 00's? He was insanely good then, and now his solos just sound flat out immortal.
Andy "the legend" LaRocque!! only metal guitarist imo on par with Randy Rhoads. I always wondered how it would've been if Ozzy got Andy to replace Randy!
Such an immense talent who I don't think ever got his just due. Even when he's not shredding his ass off he creates intelligently structured songs and leads. And hasn't lost an iota of his speed over the years.
i dont think the guy is saying andy invented that way of playing, hes simply just talking about the WAY andy does it and how it sounds is unlike anything hes heard before. jeff beck has done it, but it doesnt sound quite like the way andy does it since both guitarists are of two different styles anyways
Its commonly called a flutter, but Ive seen several guitarist do it. This happens to be a particularly good one though. Most the time the flutter isnt that wide so you can tell hes really whacking the hell out of it and may have only two springs in his tremolo system.
Actually that's a trademark Steve Vai tremelo trick. Just pull it back and lt it snap in a bouncing way multiple times like a rubber band. It can pretty much only be done on a Floyd Rose trem. Most others don't seem to have the proper bounce to them.
@juanchosolid Don't see what's NOT clean about Andy's playing. He's not robotically clean but he definitely gets each note out when he plays even during fast runs in songs like "Black Horsemen" or "Omens".
If interested; here is a new track produced by Andy La Rocque. Featuring Tony Martin on lead vocals. ua-cam.com/video/ydwXA0EpXpc/v-deo.html If you have a listen; hope you enjoy it! Cheers!
What are you talking about? Angel Black asked about the guy sitting in the studio. Andy Larocque is not there..he was talking about the guy sitting in the middle who handles the equipment.
right at the end, they sound kinda doubtful about Andy. they said "not perfect, but [something]" and then the other dude said "kind of amazing," like as in "not totally amazing"
especially when the solo is isolated they hear that the fast run around 2:46 that it's not played very clean. he's just saying that even though the fast part is kind of sloppy, it's still a really good solo
Andy LaRocque is an underrated guitarist in my opinion! true guitar legend !!!!
For sure. One of my all time favorite guitar players and truly inspirational. You KNOW him when you hear him.
Well, he's very highly rated in some circles.
I've been saying for over 25 years, Andy and Dave Murray are the 2 most underrated guitarists ever!!!!
Andy Larocque is on more features for solos than your favorite hip hop artist is for a verse.
his playing style was like another character in the king diamond stories.its not just music,it fits into the stories so well.
man you explained that exactly how that is... fukin dead balls on! hes in my opinion the best guitarist in this business
You know a guitarist is a boss when it takes another guitarist a year to learn his 20 second guitar solo.
especially these 2 shitty passages
That solo blows my fucking mind to this day. Pure molten metal oozes from Andy LaRocque's fingers.
That whammy bar technique is really cool. It has a bit of an 80s shred-master feel to it. LaRocque also uses the technique, although much more subtle, in his solo for the Death song Trapped in a Corner.
John Petrucci used that whammy bar vibrato a lot during his Ibanez early years in solos like Under a Glass Moon in a really cool way.
Andy's harmonies in his solos are phenomenal!!!
Andy LaRocque one of the most underrated guitarrist...and Chuck knew it...
Everyone is talking about the solo obviously but the riff that goes behind it is one if my favourite of all time
Just as important!
Hah I love that solo too
This is literally one of the best guitar riffs of alllllllll time. More people need to hear this!!!!
LaRocque is an amazing master, I think he redifine the rock-metal in so many ways!
classic solo. so much emotion and just guitar wizardry all at once
I keep trying to think of how I can express how amazed I am by this. It's so good. Doesn't matter everyone knows. What a solo! Beautiful piece of music.

And Abigail, and Them as well...
Oh, and Chuck Shuldiner's Individual Thought Patterns ~!
Andy is my fav ~
one of the best
The puppet master solos ..the phrasing is world class
He's amazing, he knows when to start, and stop. In between he adds badass whammy, etc, etc
The Conspiracy and Abigail albums should turn any non-believer into a believer of Andy's amazing ability to shred at a melodic level.
I love how he says “the King Diamond fans that we were” and then talks about how he never heard that sound with the whammy bar before, which is all over King Diamond albums prior to the Cold solo.

frickin hell so fluid
Andy "the legend" LaRocque!! only metal guitarist imo on par with Randy Rhoads. I always wondered how it would've been if Ozzy got Andy to replace Randy!
Pete Blakk? Criss Oliva? Michael J Romeo?

Individual thought patterns
@@gloobarkonly a handful of solos for Death on ITP.
@@lt8400but they were all fucking glorious the entire album was
@@Jerry-nu2rs I would say its the best Death album but that changes for me every week
that thing with the whammy bar is a flutter
Such an immense talent who I don't think ever got his just due. Even when he's not shredding his ass off he creates intelligently structured songs and leads. And hasn't lost an iota of his speed over the years.
damn i didnt know he played that solo yeah hwill be a special guest in any bands project or album he just knows the right phrasings to use etc etc
truly an amazing solo
Andy la roque es de los mas infravalorados en vivo rompe todo deja a todo el mundo perplejo
Andy is the ShredMaster
EFFING LEGEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2:41 I’ve heard that tremolo bar flicking sound before with Brad Gillis of Night Ranger… so, did Andy or Brad do it first? 🤔
That's a very good explanation thanks!
i dont think the guy is saying andy invented that way of playing, hes simply just talking about the WAY andy does it and how it sounds is unlike anything hes heard before.
jeff beck has done it, but it doesnt sound quite like the way andy does it since both guitarists are of two different styles anyways
2:33
Their guitar player had to learn that ? Like imitating a flash of lightning !
Wow, this is fucking cool! lml
Gods Hymn has woken.

i would like to see this documentary in its entirely do you have it?

02:30 exceptional exceptional exceptional !!!
do you have the entire documentary?
bad ass!!!
Id like to hear a duel between andy and chris poland

Is that the Dream Evil guitar player in the middle????
No sir!! That is the legendary Andy LaRocque from King Diamond my man.
What are you talking about? Angel Black asked about the guy sitting in the studio. Andy Larocque is not there..he was talking about the guy sitting in the middle who handles the equipment.
Thanks, I will find his name for you. It is Fredrik Nordström. He also has written and produced some songs for Hammerfall.
+Alonso de Hojeda Thought he meant in the middle of the song.
I wonder why Andy LaRocque didn't keep his real name?
Rip my ears at 0:00
damn that solo destroyed me
i jumped at the start
That whammy bar thing he does has been done over and over by Jeff Beck, long time ago.
Why is this attributed to Andy?
idk listen to mansion in the darkness... does anyone else use it to such effectiveness?
Because he took it to the highest level and consistently crushed phrasing the flutters into his solos
Different guitars and fingers yep
Fuck yeah Amek Angela!
right at the end, they sound kinda doubtful about Andy. they said "not perfect, but [something]" and then the other dude said "kind of amazing," like as in "not totally amazing"

@ruinawish I agree 150%....Sorry but Andy's a f'n legend. I thought he was a tech my ass!
Not need to play clean to achieve something great
Andy LaRocque is a great musician
I seriously find it hard to believe that the guys thought LaRocque was a techie... and that they invited this random techie to contribute a solo?
That's called "understatement," my friend. He was trying to be funny. Made me giggle, at least.
wait, what...you're really huge king diamond fans but you didn't realize you were working with andy larocque. uh,hm ,uh..huh?
It's called a trill. Just flick your finger on the whammy bar to make a vibration
+Todd Chenard u wouldnt call it a trill . i mean u could but most say flutter. or bounce.
+Daniel Simon hes chirping it
All the guitarists I know call it a "purr" because it sounds like a cat. Also Steve Vai used to do all those cat noises using the trem bar.
Interesting solo but nowhere near the quality of the ones from the King Diamond albums.
Dislike? Show me a solo better than this !
