It’s definitely inspired me! When I eventually come to the point where I can build a layout, I’m re-watching the series and taking a ton of tips from Pitley and you!
It was certainly nice a moment and would have been the first time it ever occurred too - at least with the Bachmann model! I have to admit I did a little dance when I saw the floor plan for the show. Thanks for watching 😃
Yes it was fantastic of him to come and open the show. I know some people aren't fond of him but after talking to him the one thing I can say is that he really is truly passionate about the hobby. Thanks for watching 😃
Seeing so many people witness a layout in person has to be the most rewarding experience. I would love to build my own railway, when I have the space for it. An awesome series, and I can't wait to see what's in store for the future!
Hi, I'm building a oo gauge layout in my shed (videos on my UA-cam and tiktok channel, Jamie's model railway). I love your techniques on the scenery. Thanks for the great videos.
Awesome, I'm so glad it's given some people a few ideas to use on their own layouts. I would never call Pitley inspiration but it's great to hear people are fond of it. Thanks for watching 😃
It’s been a really interesting journey, from the humble beginnings of Pitley, all the way to its exhibition debut, great job! Can't wait to see what's next for the channel.
It's certainly been a journey of some sort! 😅 All shall be revealed fairly soon but as a Channel Member you'll be one o the first to hear. Thanks for watching 🤩
Result! Well done TMRG and team for getting to the exhibition. My request is you take it to more show in different regions as I know it will be a star attraction certainly amongst your 30K viewer.
Running a model locomotive in front of its real-world equivalent is an amazing flex. Also, greetings from the US. Discovered the series through Gofod Tynn, looking for ideas for an S-scale layout I could drive micro-scale RC cars around in. It's been a treat.
It really is! What a fantastic coincidence 😅 Awesome, that's great to hear. Maybe check out this video I did on a layout called The Yard: ua-cam.com/video/F4dqizvSqVU/v-deo.html It's O Gauge so a bit bigger but they have various RC vehicles bringing in goods - might provide a few ideas. Thanks for watching 👍
When all said and done, Pitley is a fantastic layout and surely entertained thousands, not just on the exhibition floor but with you taking us along with you on your model railway journey from conception to exhibition. It looks like a fab railway and a great exhibition, and I'm only sorry I missed it. Looking forward to the final conclusion of this wonderful series, and seeing what you have in store for us for the coming year. This is going to sound absolutely terrible, but it gives confidence when even the professionals have to deal with gremlins on their own darlings, and that the best laid plans never survive contact with the "enemy"! A group I'm part of will be exhibiting at Ally Pally in March, and as a first time operations manager I'm bricking it as the zero hour creeps closer. Perhaps we'll see you there? Keep up the excellent work, and I hope to see you on the circuit in the near future.
Absolutely, I haven't tried to hide any of the mistakes I've made or the issues I've had throughout the entire project. I'm not trying to make myself look clever or smart, I'm simply sharing the layout and hopefully showing how something similar can be done. Good luck for Ally Pally - I'll definitely be around on one day as I have some friends exhibiting too. Sadly they forgot to send out the invitation for my layout 😉 Thanks for watching 👍
What an achievement! Congrats on building & exhibiting your layout. Brilliant enthusiasm. It is also so refreshing to see how accessible you made yourself to the paying public. This is not always the case at such events.
Thank you! Yeah it was really important to me to be friendly and present the layout and overall hobby in a positive light. Really it's just an extension of this channel which is all about being friendly, having fun and answering questions without any judgment - no reason why I wouldn't be the same in public too. Thanks for watching 😃
Great layout mate. I have lived in Kent for 47 years & 3 of those are in Tunbridge Wells & I never knew Spa Valley was there, I also see it is next to the supermarket I shopped at LOL. Very well done on your Exhibit
Amazing, you'll have to some down and visit us sometime! If you happen to be free tomorrow I'll actually be the Guard on one of the trains. Thanks for watching 😃
I’ve always thought it would fun fun to exhibit a layout (though mine needs some serious work done to it before it would be possible for me to do so 😂)! I wish I could have come to see your layout, but seeing as I’m based on the other side of the world, that was unfortunately something I’d never be able to do (most likely). The amazing thing is though with UA-cam and other sites on the internet, modellers from all of the world can share their fantastic layouts with each other! Although I’ve never seen your layout in person, and due to my location I most likely won’t ever be able to, I know what nearly your entire layout looks like since you videos are so well documented and show every step to making your layout! Your layout has inspired me so much with the construction of my own, and I can’t wait to see what you have in store for the channel later this year! Thank you for everything you do for the community!!
Yes that would be a bit of a commute! But like you say, the great thing about UA-cam is that you're more familiar than most with the layout and how it works despite being on the other side of the world. Great to hear it's inspired you with your own project and there will be more news on the next layout soon hopefully. Thanks for watching 😃
I'm very late to the videos but i just want to say I have thoroughly enjoyed every episode watching the layout take shape, and then the exhibition. Fantastic well done on all your hard work here's to the next one
No worries, really glad you've enjoyed catching up on the series! The most recent layout build is just coming to an end too so you've almost got a whole new series/layout build to enjoy after this one. Thanks for watching 😃
It's definitely been a journey, I was looking back at some of the early episodes not long ago and it's crazy to see how far it's come along. Thanks for watching 😃
It was great to finally meet you and see Pitley in the flesh, very weird to see myself and the other half in a video 😂 This weekend was just before I went in for severe eye surgery so it meant a lot to be able to see it. Seeing it all so close it inspired me to make alterations to the coffee table layout I'm building at the moment. Then to catch up with you briefly at the end of the Steam Gala was fantastic. Carry on creating such brilliant content for all of us hobbyists and can't wait to catch you again!
I'm so glad you enjoyed seeing Pitley in person and I hope the surgery all went well! Great to hear it's given you some ideas for you own layout too. There's definitely no plan to stop making videos anytime soon - in fact I just released a trailer earlier today for a brand new layout building series. All being well, the finished model railway will be attending the Spa Exhibition in September again! Thanks for watching 😃
Nice video mate. Congrats on a successful exhibition! the layout definitely attracted an audience. Excited to see what your new project is. - Nicholas.
It certainly did draw a bit of a crowd and not just because of the UA-cam connection either. Stay tuned for the next project - work has begun already and I can't wait to share it with you all. Thanks for watching 😃
It has been an incredible journey and I'm so pleased with how it was received at the exhibition. There's one final episode of this series to enjoy (available right now for Members!) and then I'll be starting work on the next major series/layout! Thanks for watching 🤩
I am from America USA, Michigan. I have been following THAT MODEL RAILROAD GUY for a while now and truly enjoy your series. Thanks for sharing and we are looking forward to seeing what comes next. Arlin Patterson. P.S. I am just getting started modeling in “0” gauge.
Thank you, really glad you've been enjoying the series. There's one more episode of this one to go but I'm already hard at work on the next series! Thanks for watching 😃
Loved this latest video and seeing the reaction to it at the Spa Valley. I didn’t realise (perhaps naively!) there was such a time difference between the video and the exhibition - I’ll keep a closer eye on that in future and pay a visit!
Yeah generally I film an entire series worth of videos, edit them afterwards and then release. This way they can come out fairly regularly as previously people would complain that there could be a gap of a couple of months between episodes if I was busy. In this instance the layout was mostly completed over the Summer (I was averaging a module a week generally) in order to get it finished for the exhibition. After the show I then set to work editing with the first episode of this series coming out November. Thanks for watching 😃
Looked like an excellent exhibition. After helping out run someone's layout I now know how fun, tiring and at points frustrating a exhibition can be. But overall it is fun. For all those saying that the hobby is dying, note the pretty huge crowds of public at this exhibition and some were mostly families with children.
Yeah it's was a full on weekend and although it sounds silly, it's really hard work keeping something moving at all times while also interacting with the public. I definitely agree with that! This was our busiest exhibition at the railway to date (I was worried about overcrowding at one point!) and the amount of families we had stop by who mentioned they were working on their own layout was truly fantastic to hear. Thanks for watching 😃
@ThatModelRailwayGuy the N gauge Dawlish Warren layout I helped out with last year do exactly that. If you keep trains moving you get more interest. Also, having an interesting train helps, long freight trains and trains carrying interesting loads like cars, tractors or other vehicles helps, as it gives added interest to kids and some adults as well.
Great video, and you're right about Model Railway Scenes they have some great 3D printed items. We have lot's of them on Dylington, and no doubt we'll be adding more in the future and to my grandson's 009 layout when he builds it.....cheers James 🙂👍
Yeah they're really great value and perfect for all kinds of layout. Best of luck with the 009 layout - don't forget to use the discount code too! Thanks for watching 😃
Sounds like the layout was well received. I gotta say Pitley looks amazing and seeing this layout come together has been fun to watch. I've learnt and picked up many tips that will come in handy and what happens with the layout in future, I look forward to seeing it. 👍
It certainly was! And this definitely isn't the end yet... I'll talk about this more next week but there's more to come in the future. Thanks for watching 😃
It was certainly nice to show the layout off in public, although with so many people watching this channel now it feels like the layout is always on show which is nice. Thanks for watching 😃
That was great fun seeing all you had to do for the show and setup. It looked great. Thanks for sharing it all with us. GOD BLESS from America. 🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖
I’ve been following you and your videos since your early tutorials and the inception of Pitley. It’s great to finally see the layout officially complete (Are layouts ever complete though? 😜) and on display at Spa Valley, and glad it went well! Your video tutorials hopefully have brought in more people taking up the hobby who are inspired by a younger face showing them the ropes! Cheers, all the best from Downunder!
Funnily enough in the next episode I brought up exactly the point of a layout never being fully complete. I certainly hope the videos have encouraged people to give it a go... after all if I can do it there's no reason it wouldn't be the same for anyone else. Thanks for watching 😃
Feels odd for people to call my layout inspiring but I really appreciate it all the same. Just wait until you see what I have in store for the next series! Thanks for watching 😃
Well done mate! Looks like it went down really well! It was interesting to see it in exhibition mode as of course it was the ‘other way round’ 😊 It seems like only yesterday when you cut the end plates, started the modules, and explained the rationale of what you wanted to do. Do you still have the temporary end section with the buffer stop? 😉 I have no doubts you will be asked to do more show, not least because you have shown how simple planning, application, and taking care to patiently build up scenery using simple techniques can create a fabulous result! 😎 I have loved watching this evolution and look forward to the new developments as they happen! Have a fabulous weekend mate 👍🍀🥂😄
Yes it was great to have the station modules facing outwards for once and simply being about to step back away from the layout and take it all in was a new experience too - one that's not usually possible given the size of the room it normally resides in. There have been a few more exhibition invites since this show and I talk more about the future for the layout in the next episode. Thanks for watching 😃
Great to see it up and running! On your backscenes - how did you fix them to the foam board on the curves without them all creasing up? I’m having a nightmare with mine on the curved sections. Congratulations on the whole project!
Hi there, I added the backscenes with the foamex laid flat. It was still a bit tricky to get rid of all the air bubbles but the curves of the layout are generally quite wide so creasing wasn't too much of an issue. If it makes any difference, these are also the PVC adhesive backscenes rather than the paper ones - we needed the extra durability. Thanks for watching 😃
Really glad you enjoyed it and no worries, I realise not everyone is in a position to become a channel member - but just watching the video still helps out. Thanks for watching 😃
We certainly did! The exhibition was a nice deadline to have in order to get the layout finished... that said I could have done with an extra couple of weeks towards the end! 😅 Thanks for watching 👍
Wonderful to see finishing touches and really great to see it at the exhibition the video, shame I want able to travel to see it in person due to illness. Looks so cool and no surprise that it attracted a big audience. Very well done indeed.
Thanks Nigel, really sorry I didn't get to meet you too. I'll definitely be around at this year's exhibition though I'm undecided whether I'll be bringing a layout just yet... I need some more recovery time first 😅 Thanks for watching 🤩
Quite a convincing railway, nice. About your mirrored backscene (forested views at least) why not "plant" some full size trees in front of and to one side. That ought to trick the eye!! 😊
The problem is that, with a modular model railway, those points on the backscene don't always fall in the same place depending on how the sections are setup so you'd need a different tree position for every possible configuration. Thanks for watching 😃
Hi. I am pleased to see the first exhibition your layout went to was a success and it model railway celebrity ceil of approval too. You have a couple of figures on your layout in engine shed area one with the guys hard hat being be held with his arms folded. I am just wondering where you sourced them from? Thanks Tim.
Yeah it did go incredibly well! All the figures on the layout are from Modelu, I highly recommend them, though for full disclosure they have sponsored some videos in the past. Thanks for watching 😃
Probably in the same way but I'd wear a raincoat 😜 In all seriousness, most exhibition layouts have plastic sheeting draped over them overnight while at shows so we'd most likely just use that. It also depends on the exhibition, many venues have loading access so you can park either under cover or next to the loading doors. Spa is obviously a bit different being a working railway shed. Thanks for watching 👍
Hiya, do you mean the static grass applicator? If so it's a semi-commercial one - they're sold on Ebay. If you check back through some of the previous videos in the series where I was adding the grass to the layout it's usually listed in the description with a link to the product page. If you mean the static grass itself that's all from WWS, again specific lengths/colours are usually listed in the description or videos where the grass was added to the layout. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃
Congratulations mate 🎉 👏 big achievement and the final build looks incredible. Everything about this series was brilliantly planned, explained and executed. Really impressed by how organised you were, well oiled machine, and you seem to be really enjoying chatting with people, which in my experience theres lots that dont want to interact with people. Really impressive. Well done 👍 Ps. Dont pretend like you didnt pull out a part from the cali hahahahah 😂
Thanks! Yeah the prior prep beforehand really helped things go smoothly - even when we did have problems we already knew how to solve them and keep trains running in the meantime. As for interacting with the public, it's the same as being friendly on UA-cam too. Even for those who had no idea who I was it's still important to represent the layout and the hobby in a positive light. I'm always happy to answer questions and talk about the layout whether online or in person. It's much better than having the operators sit stonewalled behind the backscenes refusing to make eye contact. Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy to true. Well a massive well done. On the layout and on the show. I was just as impressed with the way the modules were stacked and lifted. Worked really well. Btw. I have had a big issue on my build with cutting out and I found it seemed to be due to my track not being level front to back. Not sure whether you covered that in any videos but on Amazon picked up some small level cubes and they are awesome for checking the track. Worth having in the kit bag. Now I gotta go use it all around the shelf layout as I glue down.
Hi there, it's the PECO Yard Office kit I think. I got it free with a magazine a while back but I think it is available as a separate kit too. Thanks for watching 😃
Hi, just discovered you on youtube, very good video. Building myself an N-modules for exhibition, like what you said about activity at the facility, I want to build a public-friendly train facility like you. You use the Z21, have acquired it, and would like the public to be able to drive trains with their own mobile phone. Maybe I want to contact you if there is something I can't do, or understand with the app and setting up the Z21, can I contact you? What I work on the most are electrical/data connections between the modules, to get it as solid as possible, I have bought several different multi-connectors on Ebay which will be tried out this spring. Again, very inspiring video.
Yes it was certainly great to have so many people taking an interest in the layout. Using the Z21 to let the public take control is something I'd like to do in the future too. Thanks for watching 😃
Wow, you're a bit of a killjoy aren't you? 😂 The hobby is just fine and the attendance for this exhibition was the highest it's ever been. Doesn't sound like a hobby that's on the way out to me.
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy thank you - i do remember seeing this episode but still cannot understand hiw you actually attached the sections together? Was the extra wood you added the section that attached to the main baseboard?
Yes the lengths of wood on the baseboard tops at each end of the module were there to support my endplates, which in turn interface with all the other modules on the layout.
Who said anything about relying on the joiners to conduct power? Yes I have droppers to every section of track, it was one of those that failed and I made a temporary fix by soldering a piece of wire across an isolated fishplate to restore power rather than dig up all the ballast as the show was opening. Thanks for watching 😃
Tried to become a member, but I'm in the apartment in Fortaleza in Brazil, here the tax office is asking for information about why I want to send money out of Brazil. I'll be back in Norway in 4 weeks, can register to become a member then, it will be easier.
If you check out the Members Feed (www.youtube.com/@ThatModelRailwayGuy/membership) there's a post that explains why it was re-uploaded. Thanks for watching 🤩
Haha, I think it was probably an accident since he was standing closer to the layout than usual to be able to hear me over the real steam engine behind us. We had a lot worse over the weekend - most notably one guy who asked how the bushes were stuck down as he tried to pull them up! Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy blimey - people eh! haha. i've binge watched a few of videos - really great information presented excellently. keep up the good work :)

You can try looking into smaller scales/gauges if space is an issue: like OO9/H0e, H0f, N to name a few. There is always a way! Cheers!

It certainly was! And this definitely isn't the end yet... I'll talk about this more next week but there's more to come in the future. Thanks for watching 😃
Well done, glad it went so well after all the effort and money that you have put into it. I guess the exhibition experience makes it all worth while.
It was certainly nice to show the layout off in public, although with so many people watching this channel now it feels like the layout is always on show which is nice. Thanks for watching 😃
Great video, one of my favourites you have done. Layout looking great 👏
Thank you... this might have been one of my favourites to make too! Thanks for watching 😃
Brilliant, well done
Thanks! It was great to be able to show off the layout in public. Thanks for watching 😃
That was great fun seeing all you had to do for the show and setup. It looked great. Thanks for sharing it all with us.
GOD BLESS from America.
🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖🚂💖
So glad you enjoyed it, was definitely an action packed weekend! Thanks for watching 😃
Looking forward to 2024's show! Ill be bringing my own version of Spa Valley to exhibit 😁
Hope to bump into you there 👍
Awesome! I'm part of the team that helps organise the exhibition and it's looking like it'll be another great show. Thanks for watching 😃
I watched quite a few of your videos to help build my diorama/module.
So its a nice full loop being invited along 😁
This is actually one of the highlights of my week!
Awesome, I feel very honoured! Thanks for watching 😃
You should be very proud, great job
Thank you, I certainly am and it was great to entertain so many people over the weekend. Thanks for watching 😃
So inspiring. Wish I could have seen it in person. Excited to see the future of the channel and the next layout! :D
Feels odd for people to call my layout inspiring but I really appreciate it all the same. Just wait until you see what I have in store for the next series! Thanks for watching 😃
Just awesome mate
Thank you! It was great to finally show off the layout in public!
I have no doubts you will be asked to do more show, not least because you have shown how simple planning, application, and taking care to patiently build up scenery using simple techniques can create a fabulous result! 😎
I have loved watching this evolution and look forward to the new developments as they happen!
Very lovely and convincing, so glad I had the patience to wait for this upload, sorry I’m not a member.
Really glad you enjoyed it and no worries, I realise not everyone is in a position to become a channel member - but just watching the video still helps out. Thanks for watching 😃
Looked like you had a good time after all the long building.....it's always good to have a target in life, waiting for your next project.
We certainly did! The exhibition was a nice deadline to have in order to get the layout finished... that said I could have done with an extra couple of weeks towards the end! 😅 Thanks for watching 👍
Phew, very interesting video, as I am off to the Longfield show today, I will fully appreciate all the hard work involved ,well done, lovely layout
Awesome, hope you have a good time! Thanks for watching 😃
This layout of yours is brilliant.
Thank you so much! Just shows what you can do with some fairly simple techniques. Thanks for watching 😃
Amazing! What lights do you use? A layout as good as yours looks especially fantastic with that natural lighting!
Hiya, there's a link in the description to the lights I use. They do make a huge difference! Thanks for watching 😃
Looks cool. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching 😃
Great video! I knew from the start it would turn out amazing🔥🔥
Thank you! It was great that the layout was so well received in person - not just on the internet! Thanks for watching 😃
I can't wait until the open premier.
Hope you enjoyed the premiere! Thanks for watching 😃
Sorry I didn’t comment earlier but, this was really cool all your hard work came down to this, I think it has really paid off!
Thank you, it was a great deadline to get the layout ready for and I'm so pleased it was well received by everyone at the show.
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy thanks. I'll go check them out.
How would you get the sections of the layout into the van if it was raining?
Probably in the same way but I'd wear a raincoat 😜
In all seriousness, most exhibition layouts have plastic sheeting draped over them overnight while at shows so we'd most likely just use that. It also depends on the exhibition, many venues have loading access so you can park either under cover or next to the loading doors. Spa is obviously a bit different being a working railway shed. Thanks for watching 👍
Great videos! Is the static grass a commercial one or homemade. If it's homemade how about a video on making one!
Amazing this helped me a lot as I just like an hour ago lost my precious cat😢😢
I'm sorry to hear that. But I'm glad this video was able to take your mind of things even if just for a while. Thanks for watching 👍
Well done 👍
Ps.
Morning, how did you make the rolls of hay bails?
Dead static grass on sellotape rolled up into a cylinder. Thanks for watching 😃
im waiting now cant wait for it to start
Hope you enjoyed the premiere! Thanks for watching 😃
Good stuff
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching 😃
Where is the hut at 5:05 from? I could do with cannibalising a couple of them for windows on another project
Hi there, it's the PECO Yard Office kit I think. I got it free with a magazine a while back but I think it is available as a separate kit too. Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy now you say that, I think I have one in my stash of unbuilt kits, thank you
Hi, just discovered you on youtube, very good video.
Thanks for watching 😃
the hobby is dieing and soon will be just a memory of days gone past
Wow, you're a bit of a killjoy aren't you? 😂 The hobby is just fine and the attendance for this exhibition was the highest it's ever been. Doesn't sound like a hobby that's on the way out to me.
Amazing🎉
Hope you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching 😃
Please an you direct me to the video where you did the drop diwn section for the bridge? Thank you
Hiya, only a couple of episodes ago: ua-cam.com/video/Xns3OCoHtwo/v-deo.html Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃
In like 5 or 6 years time if you book in for another exhibition I will guarantee you I will fly there just to see you❤😂
I'll be amazed if I'm still relevant in 5 years time 😅 Thanks for watching 👍
Schoolboy error relying on rail joins to conduct power across section breaks. Surely you had droppers to each (or most) track pieces?
Who said anything about relying on the joiners to conduct power? Yes I have droppers to every section of track, it was one of those that failed and I made a temporary fix by soldering a piece of wire across an isolated fishplate to restore power rather than dig up all the ballast as the show was opening. Thanks for watching 😃
Tried to become a member, but I'm in the apartment in Fortaleza in Brazil, here the tax office is asking for information about why I want to send money out of Brazil. I'll be back in Norway in 4 weeks, can register to become a member then, it will be easier.
No worries at all, whenever you can and there's plenty of exciting stuff coming for Members in the future too. Thanks for watching 😃
wasn't this uploaded already?
If you check out the Members Feed (www.youtube.com/@ThatModelRailwayGuy/membership) there's a post that explains why it was re-uploaded. Thanks for watching 🤩
Will the man himself reply?
Depends whether there's anything to reply to 😉 Thanks for watching 👍
17:15 - i can't be the only one annoyed that bloke kept dragging his coat across the scenery....
