    It's been a long road but here we are. The layout is now mostly complete, the exhibition is done and now it's time for us all to enjoy some trains running on the layout. Of course, a layout is never truly finished and I talk about some of the small details I know I want to improve on the layout as well as some of the things I've learnt in the process of building a modular model railway.
    After the exhibition in last week's video I also talk more about Pitley Steam Railways future on the exhibition circuit and the logistics of taking a layout like this to a show.
    Chapters:
    00:00 - Intro
    00:46 - Full Layout Tour
    05:47 - Running Session 1
    12:50 - Lessons Learnt
    18:38 - Running Session 2
    25:06 - The Future
    28:28 - The End?

    The grey walls, station and bedding contrast with the maroon carriages..a great scene of colours and thought obviously went into this layout....simply wonderful and inspirational.

      It's been heavily influenced by similar grey mornings when I was a volunteer at Embsay working on similar maroon carriages... they say model what you know 😉 Thanks for watching 👍

    I watched this layout grow from the first video you made talking about it, and 3 years on seeing just how far it's come is nothing short of amazing. You have done so well and earned each and every one of your subscribers, although you are a modest chap, I don't think it is inappropriate at all to say that it is young enthusiasts like you, who have contributed to saving this hobby the most, and I dare say, you more so than most. Well done, the layout is beautiful and We have all learned so much from it, I hope you are proud of yourself and your work. :)

      Thank you, while I don't know about "saving the hobby" I do think taking a positive approach to the hobby is the best thing for all of us. Recognising that it's a bit of fun and having a go with a "can-do" attitude goes a long way. But equally I'm so proud of this layout and the video series that goes with it and I'm incredibly grateful that so many others have found joy from joining me along the way. Thanks for watching 🤩

    The touch of the tail lamp on the rear of the train as it passes out from the last shot; perfect.
    I think your words in this bookend episode of this series has left me without much to say. As a self proclaimed long term regular viewer, it has been a delight to have watched the railway, the channel, and our host develop as a modeller to this point from those burgeoning days of the tail end of the first lockdown.
    I think I speak for all of us when i say thank you so much for the privilege to follow along with the trials, tribulations and everything in between that brought this railway to fruition. It has been a pleasure to watch and I cannot wait for whatever comes next.
    And who knows? Maybe, just maybe, we'll all get to see Pitley out on the circuit.
    Until next time!

      I was trying to figure out what the last shot of the series would be and this was just too goo an opportunity to miss.
      The privilege is all mine though. It's been a true honour to create this series for you all, especially those who have been watching since the beginning and I feel that this layout is as much yours as it is mine.
      Fingers crossed for some exhibition appearances in the future! Thanks for watching 😃

    Amazing, watching this layout come together over the months has been a joy. Always looking forward to seeing the next episode. You and Charlie from Chadwick have inspired me to take the plunge and have a go myself. So 3 months ago I started on my first base board.Its going to be a long journey ahead of me,But I am enjoying the process and learning lots along the way.So Thank you for all the hard work you put in to making these episodes and look forward to seeing what's next. Great Work.

      Thank you and I'm so glad it's given you the inspiration to start work on your own layout. I always approach these videos with the intent of simplifying the process so that anyone can have a go so it's great to hear that is the case. If you haven't seen it already, I did a series a while back called Model Railway Basics which covers all the basic skills and scenic techniques that can be useful while building a layout. Best of luck with the project and thanks for watching 😃

    Congratulations on a brilliant video series. The effort required not only to build it AND film every step to a really high standard is incredible.
    Nicely paced throughout, Clear instruction, sound reasoning for decisions and an honest roundup of lessons learned at the end
    You should have your own TV show.
    Looking forward to seeing what you do next.

      Thank you! Someday I'd love to do a behind the scenes video to show just how much work goes into a single episode - but of course that would complicate the filming process even further 😅
      With this channel I've always tried to show not just how I do things but why I do them as well and I've never tried to hide any of the mistakes I've made as that's partly what makes it interested. I suspect there isn't enough drama for TV but the beauty of UA-cam means something like this has the space to breathe without having to worry about ratings or viewer numbers in quite the same way. Thanks for watching 😃

    What a finale, maybe TMRG! You have done a splendid job and taught us so much as returnees to the hobby. I understand the points you make about exhibitions vs eyes on UA-cam and the work involved. Perhaps your community should volunteer to help 😉 but then it is a precious layout that deserves TLC. It is never fun finished as you say and I look forward to the future tweeks

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  5 місяців тому +1

      Yeah it's definitely a lot of work for a layout that wasn't really designed to leave home, especially when it gets seen by thousands online - I know it's not really the same thing but ultimately if I was going to do loads of exhibitions it would mean I had less time to make videos. I'm certainly not ruling out doing the odd one or two special appearances in the future though once I've got some of the niggles worked out. Thanks for watching 😃

    And so you should be pleased, in fact proud! … The back ground is in perspective and pulls you right into the imagination and skill you’ve applied in the foreground. I’ve found your modelling superb and learnt a lot. But like you say a model is never finished, and for me the fun and satisfaction in anything like this is always in the modelling, then it goes on and on for however far the imagination “and” space can stretch. Whereas the actual operation in my mind comes 2nd… My love of model railways came about at a young age, and after looking through some old Railway model magazines dated from the 50s my appetite was then wetted forever! Alas now I will perhaps never ever achieve the dream of my own model, all though never say never!!.. and a plan to build a layout representing the former Longmoor Military railway (closed in 1969) has always stuck in my mind…. Anyway you’ve spurred me on, and I plan to go to more model railway exhibitions this year…. So all that’s left to be said is, thank you so much for bringing me so much enjoyment. You have certainly brought a smile to my face 👏👏👏👍

    What you need in or near the coal loading area is a JCB telescopic handler the modern day coal bunker loading devise found at many a heritage railway (excluding those with the coal loading stages). Other than that the layout looks excellent. For the building removal issue you could put some pieces of timber inside them on the four walls which intern will help you locate them back in place when you need to place them back on the layout after storage.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  5 місяців тому

      Yes there are lots of little details like this to add around the entire layout, once I have more time and more importantly the funds to do so.
      With the buildings It's less about locating them on the layout and more the fact that little details get damaged being constantly taken on and off. The amount of space needed to store them off the layout is a major factor too as it takes up several more boxes and vital floor space so the overall aim is to get to a situation where they don't need to be removed from the layout at all. Thanks for watching 😃

Something I might suggest is a Pitley Coal Train Weekend video? Stunning achievement, I remember the first few videos and it's been wonderful to follow your progress. It's even more so, as the inspiration and finish is recognisable through my volunteering, getting to drive through similar scenes regularly.
    As for exhibitions, I hope you manage to sort the niggles out as seeing it on video is one thing, but being able to appreciate it in person is a different thing entirely. If help was required at exhibitions, I wouldn't be surprised if followers in the area you travel to would jump at the chance to assist....I know I would....

      Regarding future exhibitions, yeah there's a few things to work on. I wouldn't even say they're niggles but new things I want to add or try - remote uncoupling for example so a run-around could be demonstrated without the hand of god being required. The main issue for exhibitions though is actually getting it out of the house which requires some careful manoeuvring round some very tight corners and stairs! 😅 Thanks for watching 👍

    Well done on achieving the ultimate aim of attending an exhibition with a working layout. That in itself has surely made this all worthwhile? It does seem like you have already picked up on plenty of things to improve upon, and even better, already got a plan of sorts for some of it 😃
    I don’t know the ins and outs of it exactly, but I know an old method of powering semaphores in a way that protected their fragility was by balancing the arm on a sprung see-saw mechanism so there was plenty of ‘give’ in the mechanism. It sounds a faff but not only does it help protect the signal, it also means that the arm sort of flutters as it engages which is just like the real thing! 😎
    In terms of the time taken to set up/pack away, I suspect that if you had already done it a few times, you will take far less time. Once upon a time, I used to do promotional work which often involved setting up displays at shows. We’d be paid on the understanding that the displays would typically take 8 hours to set up, and the first few times it would! However, by the end of the third or fourth show, the time would usually be halved and in some case, by the time I had set up and packed away a display 5 or 6 times, I’d find myself doing most of it within an hour and a half, have a nice break for breakfast and a cuppa, and then do the rest within another hour or two! Obviously I’d still get paid for 8 hours though 😆
    Just one thing I was going to suggest BTW, why not add an alternative walling section with an end piece for a gate or where the wall ends and a different fence starts? 🤔 Obviously I’ve no idea how easy that is so ignore me if I am being daft! 😄 Actually, I’ll be interested if you find any additional accessories that you decide to produce yourself, because I like how you keep it simple and just want to aid your fellow modellers 👍
    Cheers mate. Great to see the evolution of the layout at the end, and to see the complete layout (for now at least!) and I look forward to the next set of instalments 👍🍀🍻

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  5 місяців тому +1

      It definitely was a huge achievement to get the layout running at an exhibition!
      With the semaphores, it's more the fact that the plastic kits are too delicate for long transportation and are easily knocked/snapped when setting up and dismantling. Again with the setup of the layout, I've done it a fair few times at home and I've got it down to a fine art but the issue is more that it was designed for home use, not at an exhibition. If I were designing it as an exhibition layout I would have made things differently. Thanks for watching 😃

    Not sure what your plans are...but I know if I had something like this(if I even had a place for a model railway) I would already be thinking about additional modules that I could make to allow running two trains simultaneously. Such as a second station, a loop as you call it over there(passing siding here in the States)...the possibilities are endless. Personally, I'd keep the building removable but the small items would be permanently attached and not have to worry about when moving it around.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  5 місяців тому

      I've got plenty of ideas for future modules - the issue is space. The layout already fills the entire room and even when it's packed away it still takes up a lot of space.
      That's actually why I'm planning to fix the buildings down as they require several more storage boxes to pack them up properly without damaging them. I'll most likely use magnets though just in case I need to fiddle about with the lighting in the future. Thanks for watching 😃

    • @zaklex3165
      @zaklex3165 5 місяців тому

      @@ThatModelRailwayGuy Yes, layout space would be a consideration, but I would be thinking more along the lines of making sure I had storage space as the additional modules would be to change out the existing setup, sort of rotating scenics and operations without having a huge layout, but that might present other problems. Brainstorming is part of the hobby too.

  • @paulsharpe3794
    @paulsharpe3794 5 місяців тому

    Hi there you mentioned about the servos being a bit too powerful if you put a "Z" bend in the push rod it works like a spring. And how about using neodymium magnets to hold the buildings which means that they can be removed for travel but not move if the layout is knocked by accident

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  5 місяців тому

      It's more the fragility of the plastic signals that's the limiting factor as they're just too delicate. I'll most likely look at brass signal kits and switch over to digital servos for finer control too.
      That was exactly my plan for the buildings. They probably won't come off even for storage though as I don't have space for them. It'll really only just be if I ever need to get inside to the lighting or interiors. Thanks for watching 😃

    Hey I actually had an idea that you might be able to make work if you want to make a modular layout that's easy to move and put together again when going to exhibitions. but it could also be something unique.
    what if you were to make sections within brief cases or something similar. something that you could easily lift up and put inside of a truck or the boot of a car but still detailed enough to make it interesting. plus you could make each single Briefcase a kind of different environment within Different Seasons like fall winter and so on so forth. plus I really think it would be interesting to make entire modular layout out of Brief cases rather than custom builds modules. just an idea I'm putting out there but hey some of you can work with

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  Місяць тому +1

      It wouldn't be impossible but using something as small as a briefcase is going to limit the size of the modules and what track plans you can use. For me it would be too far away from the type of layout I wanted to build but like I said, not outright impossible. Thanks for watching 👍

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  5 місяців тому

      Thank you! With the sound it's important to remember that what you're hearing is a small speaker, recorded by a microphone with a lot of room tone, processed through the camera and editing software before being compressed during export and then altered further by UA-cam when uploaded.
      Generally it always sounds better live than it does recorded - something I've been all to aware of during my time working in the music industry. Sometimes bigger speakers help but that's not always the case, it can be as much about the actual sound profile and how it was recorded too. Ultimately though, it's never going to match the real thing although I do think there have been huge improvements to sound over the last few years. Thanks for watching 😃
