    It's often a common sight at heritage railways to see a siding filled with restoration projects for the future. This is something I knew I wanted to recreate for Pitley Steam Railway, my modular model railway, and one of the new curved modules was the perfect opportunity to do it.
    I'll also be creating a small access yard for the railway too so that visiting locos can be loaded onto the rails and the preservation society can store some of their unneeded bits and pieces. It's a lot to fit in on such a small module but I'm definitely up to the task!

    The blue tarp really worked nicely. The color is a nice contrast to the weathered tender body, and the sheen evokes that kind of plasticized all-weather material, which again helps fix the module on a point of time

      Yeah what started out as a convenient way to cover the coal load has actually brought that whole little scene together really nicely! Thanks for watching 😃

    A really great video and so interesting to see it coming together; am sure this will be a great addition to the railway. These areas on a preservation railway always have a feeling of great character which you have brought out so well. Your Grandad would be pleased that you a contribution on the layout in his memory - nice touch. So good to have early access to the content thanks. Would be great to see how you make the tarpaulin, thanks.

      It's certainly made shunting on the layout much more interesting, moving wagons between this siding and the two on the yard module while not getting in the way of the passenger trains.
      Yeah it's great to have one of his models on the layout, a really great reminder of where it all began. And I suspect the tarpaulin will get it's own stand alone video in the near future once I've completed the layout. Thanks for watching 🤩

    Fantastic video, I really liked the siding, you always see those sidings with scrap locos and wagons on them, and the scrap loco you done was brilliant, and it makes it a bit more special that you grandfather built it, and being on the layout now, your grandfather is part of pitley 😀

    23:20 I’m sure he’d be happy to know you’re using it now.
    Also, I know that by this point, Pitley is completed, or as completed as any layout can ever be, but a minor suggestion, maybe put some chains or rope holding the locomotive to the trailer, just for an added touch of realism.

    Hi mate! Excellent content as ever, and I am so glad to see that the siding that you told me to patiently wait for has materialised finally! 😅 Looks really good and the access road and walls make it look convincing 😎
    Nice to see your Grandad’s old Mogul on the layout. I actually bought one as well years ago with the idea of creating a cameo in the engine shed I eventually hope to build with the mogul in the process of being lifted off its wheels or even to place stock under the front with the pony truck disassembled or undergoing emergency repair or something close by 🤓 My dad built one when I was about 5 so I promised myself I’d build one as well…and one day I shall…eventually 🤣😂😅
    Cheers matey, have a fantastic Christmas 💚👍🍻🎄🍀

    It won't be news for you to learn that your uploads are GREAT! They're so enjoyable to watch and are genuinely informative. I've learnt loads, having been away from the model rail scene for a long time.
    I think many of the viewers will agree that you've got a likeable way of explaining things, in an understandable manner that is so timely you answer our questions even as we're thinking them! ** BRAVO!! **
    Also your editing & choice of background music is perfect as it seems to convey a thoughtful optimism before evolving into an up-tempo groove (?) when the work really begins to take shape!
    Watching these has inspired me to begin work on a 009 layout in the style of one of Rev. W. Awdry's railways (Duck Gordon & Edward are the best!)
    Thank you for doing a great job!

I do work hard to make everything as easy to digest as possible and that includes the editing and music. But certainly with the information there's nothing that annoys me more than gatekeeping in a hobby. 😅
      Best of luck with your 009 layout and thanks for watching 😃

      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  7 місяців тому +3

      Really glad you enjoyed it! No you're not dreaming, Episode 20 I believe... it wasn't a black wash, it's was the grime solution from Geoscenics that comes in their track weathering kit. Can I suggest to you one of the best investment for me was a tub of flux (solder with flux coating is rubbish) the flux helps dispatch the heat and make the solder flow and fix so much better. Honestly it'll make a big difference if you try it 😀

      To be honest I don't really do enough soldering to warrant it. For me, the more bits and pieces I have to assemble to do something the less likely I am to do it. It's the same reason why I tend to prefer manual brushing over an airbrush 😅 Thanks for watching 👍

    The layout is coming together nicely. I feel it's a great example of 'less is more'. There's enough detail without going too overboard.
    I'm not overly convinced by the Pug in the yard though as a loco wouldn't really come apart like that but I guess it was easier as it's the way the model comes apart.

      And that's exactly why I wanted to include something like this on the layout. Preservation layouts often just end up being a label to be able to run whatever you want (which is absolutely fine!). When using natural dirt it's best to put it in the oven for 30 or so minutes @ 350 to kill anything that may be residing in the dirt. I have a ton of lichen growing out back on a hill that I'm soon gonna gather and preserve for future use. I use real bituminous coal for my steam tenders. I got a big chunk of bituminous coal I went after with a hammer and smashed it to small bits about HO gauge. Cheers & Merry Christmas from eastern TN

      Hi there, yes this layout is 00 gauge. I do indeed put the dirt in the oven to kill off any bacteria - I think it mentioned this in a previous video as I've used the technique a lot throughout the layout. Thanks for watching 😃

    A point of pedantry (and model railroaders tend to be pretty pedantic), I think the gate should be open if the lorry (it's a UK railroad so it's a lorry, not a truck) and low-loader are there, because how did the lorry get in the yard in the first place? Otherwise, i really like the scene!

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  7 місяців тому

      It can take quite a while for locos and rolling stock to be loaded/unloaded - especially if you have to wait for passenger services to end for the day... that's my excuse anyway. Thanks for watching 😃

    when I build my scrap yard, its not going to big, but crammed with junk car bodies and little bits and pieces. auto, but mostly train cars, 2 tracks into it but one line will be for deadline locomotives, and cars that will be on deadline, and RIP track for cars and locomotives that can be repaired. I dont have alot of room but enough to make working dioramas. I will post a video when I get done.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  7 місяців тому

      I have tried it in the past... the GoPros I have are all too big for the loading gauge so they hit the tunnel, platform, bridges, etc. I'd probably need one of the small session cameras to be able to get it round the layout. It's something I would like to be able to in the future though. Thanks for watching 😃

    Loved it, even as a stand alone diorama it looks great. But, should the siding have a catch point?Also, any signals? (even if modelled in a disused state)

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  7 місяців тому

      Yes in reality the siding would need a catch point but it would take up too much space on an already short siding if I included it. This is something I've standardised upon across the layout.
      No signals though as this is a heritage line so it's all controlled by the ground frame which would only be unlocked by permission of the signaller further up the line. Thanks for watching 😃

  • @TankEngine97
    @TankEngine97 7 місяців тому

    I've always liked scrapped sidings or scrap dressing in general. I don't know why but much like the over grown siding you did prior, I think it has something to do with it adding detail or something.

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  7 місяців тому

      I think a big part of modelling stuff realistically is not having everything look perfect. So by modelling more dilapidated areas and stock we perceive it as more detailed and less toy like... that's my theory anyway. Thanks for watching 😃

    3 levers needed on the ground frame? You could have only 2.... Padlocked or annetts locked point lock lever and then the point lever itself?

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  7 місяців тому

      I was working on the logic that a siding like this wouldn't probably have a catch point in reality. So release, catch and point levers. But don't draw too much attention to it or everyone will notice there's nothing connecting the frame to the point! 😅 Thanks for watching 👍

      Our point to the siding at Priors Lane only has 2 levers....the fpl and the point lever....same with the point at the Embsay end of the Bow Bridge loop. The fpl lever is released by an annetts key on the section staff

    Hello! I use the same static grass applicator as you, but my grass work doesn’t stand up as effectively- do you have any tips on how to improve?

    • @ThatModelRailwayGuy
      @ThatModelRailwayGuy  7 місяців тому

      Hiya, there's all the obvious things like making sure you've got fresh batteries in the applicator and making sure the ground wire is touching near where you're applying the grass.
      Something else I do after applying the grass is run the mesh back over the surface without the hopper attached. You should be able to see the grass fibres moving around with the current and this can help a few more to stand up in the glue.
      With the first shorter layer it's really difficult to see if it's standing up at all, it's really only when you get to the 4mm and 6mm fibres you can start to see the height. Thanks for watching 😃
