Cannot thank you enough. My machine was blocked by some sparky droppings! As Murphys law would have it, said sparky was away over the weekend the machine blocked up! I managed to follow these steps and resolve the issue! Rather proud of myself, but it's thanks to you!

Thankyou so much for posting this video! My machine stopped draining after the wash cycle this morning. Your instructions helped me to determine the cause of the problem and fix it! Thankfully it was just something wrapped around the fan, that once removed meant the pump could work again!
Awesome, did this today and found a rubber band wrapped around the pump also a pair of scissors under the agitator I took out of the machine. So easy and also so satisfying to fix it myself. Thanks so much.

Legendary video, and just saved my Smart Drive machine. Got to the motor from the bottom, had it off in two seconds, got the accumulated fluff bundle out and it's back to working an absolute treat! I can hear it happily completing another load as I write this. Hats off sir!
Wow, This guy is definitely an expert.. So many important tips and detailed insight. My friends washer stopped draining, I took a look at it and watched several videos to familiarize myself with this washer, this is by far the best video on Fisher & Paykel washers. When I first looked at the washer I thought it was a value engineered POS but as I started to take it apart I was really impressed with the engineering that went into the design of this machine. I don't know how reliable these machines are over the long term but they are fantastic to work on, you can take the whole thing apart with a phillips screw driver. When I saw that you could remove the water pump without the need for tools I wanted to send the engineering team a case of beer! Thanks for making this video!
These machines were unlike anything else when the first ones were designed in the early/mid 1990's. Most of the changes since then have been improvements, removing components and doing more and more in software.

Brilliant. Just worked like magic. Dogs bed broke open and carded wool went everywhere. After watching this, I got to the pump and found wool around it. Cleared it and back working. Don’t have to resort to the scrubbing board, copper and wringer. Thank you.
Hi, Dan... great advice! 1 x lolly pop stick, with 1 x cable tie, hiding in the secondary chamber, waiting to sabotage things later and all is good with our machine. Nowhere near as awkward as that time a stray 1" screw ring-cut the washing machine bowl in half... now that was nearly a career ending event with the Wee Wifey! Thank you!

Thanks so much for your informative video, really appreciate it! My machine started smelling foul and the wash water was filthy. Then the pump stopped, should have seen the warning signs! My hubby was away so drained my machine by hand and tipped it up with a towel behind it so I didn't dent the gib. As feared, a cotton bud and accumulated wet fabric fibres had blocked the pump. Saved me on a weekend, thanks again! A++++!

With the advice you have posted I was able to remove and test the pump on my machine and unfortunately discovered the pump was overheating. It looks like it needs replacing, with a resistance of 27-28ohms while warm. Much appreciated!!

Thanks so much. our machine has been running funny for a few months. today it stopped on fault code 37. pump would run but gave the hot smell and would trip on over heat. pulled the pump and it had 33 ohms when was hot to touch and 28 ohms cold. replaced it with a pump I got from an old machine, it had 33 ohms cold. then watched your other vids and gave the machine a birthday and clean. we feel like we have a new machine now. ill ring you tomorrow to give you some beer money. thanks so much.
Thank you once again, two months ago I had to clean out my longhaired black cats fur from the top. This time he went one better and I had to do both top and bottom. No mean feat when I have a buggered hip and back. I try hard to get rid of excess fur before I wash, but your tutorial is so easy to understand. 👍🤗😻

I have a WA80T65GW1 and it stopped with error 41, bailed the water (it was getting sticky, phew) and turned it on it's side, pump was a newer one, had a creamy coloured rubber elbow connector, 3 screws, popped the elbow connector and a 20cm length of fluffy crap was visible, after a short struggle and grunt, remove, clean of excessive water, righted the unit, plugged in, rinse/spin cycle, "Bob is your uncle!" Thanks for giving me the courage to try this myself, my wallet is significantly better off 🙂

Thank you sooo much for an easy to follow video. Many UA-cam videos are not videos, more like a talk show and before they get to the point they start with the weather forecast and end up with what their dog had for breakfast. Yours is so to the point and even when you are just talking you are unloading heaps of stats and valuable experience tips. I was ready to get a new machine when I saw this video. My pump had 29 Ohms on the coil and longer I held my Fluke meter on it it would drop to 28.3 Ohm. Trusted your information (33 Ohm specs) and went to get a new one for $74. I put it in and got my machine back alive and running. Did not find any blockage (with your easy method) so wasn't sure why the pump got faulty. Then during the first full cycle wash I noticed it got stuck in first rinse cycle (two orange and one red light on the dash). It would kick out the water and start spinning and spraying and draining again but it would not switch to the next cycle. It would repeat this forever unless I press the forward button to go to the next rinsing cycle (one orange and one red light). After this it would complete rinsing and finish spinning and it would turn off as it should. So I guess there is a problem with the controller and maybe that is why the drain pump paid the price (with my wallet). Now when we hear the rinse starting and the drain pump starts making that cavitation noise after the first rinse we go to the machine and manually switch to the next rinsing cycle. I just watched your long way cleaning the pump from the top and will try that one too but already we are happy to use it like this as the machine is really good and served us for years trouble free. What is your model number? If it is draining out to the point of cavitating then there is probably no need to take the inner bowl out. If you leave it long enough it should eventually bring up a code, may take 8-9 + retries though. It does do a spray rinse as the first rinse depending on what settings are programmed, to save water. have you left it for 10-15min to see if it goes on to the second rinse? If it is stopping spinning to refill ,then drain its usually a balance problem, but then it wouldn't do the rest of the cycle no problem.
My French pump failed about 2 years ago and I could only get that replacement you demonstrate at the end. And today it jammed full of grit underneath the impeller exactly as you warned. Also the replacement doesn't have the plastic lug/clip retainer. The replacement pump is on Trade Me for $75. I see that it includes a warning "Does not suit environments where high amounts of sand can build up in the pump e.g Kindergartens." I have explained this to my wife so hopefully she doesn't bork it a third time.

Glad I could help. Funny story I used to collect bread bag clips for a strange reason as a kid, and blocked mums washing machine. The guy who came and fixed it was one of the techs who trained me years later.
Thanks for the videos. I've watched 4 of them. Make things a lot easier when you know what to and understand how the machine works. Now I've clean the pump and bowl the next job will be to replace the noisy bearings.

Thanks so much for your video as I was sure my 13 year old machine was history when I heard the humming noise and smelt the hot electrical smell while the pump was completely jammed. I thought it likely needed expensive repairs which I couldn't justify on such an old machine. But before giving up on the machine I googled the symptoms which lead straight to your video. I found the pump was blocked by a cleaning cloth. I was surprised to get a reading 36 ohms at the pumps contacts so I refitted the pump and it's working perfectly. I can't work out why the pump is still working despite the hot electrical burning smell. Thanks for saving me buying a new machine and I'm very grateful you took the time to make this video
The pump relies on the fan at the bottom to keep it cool, so when its jammed it will overheat until its safety overheat cuts out. If you are lucky and have stopped it before trying too many times it wont have done any damage.
@@motrepairs thanks so much for the reply. This time I must have been lucky as I started a load of washing and forgot about the machine. I investigated when the house seemed too quiet! I quickly cut the power at the wall when I heard the humming which sounded the same hum I've heard for the old brushed motors. When one of those old motors jam the armature can quickly burn out
The motor connector should have a fuse located behind the top panel. It'll blow if the motor is overheating to prevent damage. I have this fisher & paykel washer as well and it has a fuse. Mine currently blew during the drain cycle so I have to take a look at the drain pump to see if it's clogged.
@@stealthxg5045 What country are you in? The AUs/NZ machines have fuses soldered on to the PCB but usually if they are blown then other parts of the PCB are damaged as well. Im not aware of any pump only fuses so it may be only in your country.
@@motrepairs I'm in the US. My model is the GWL11. There's a fuse connector on the pump line that tells you what fuse to use. I installed a new fuse as my other burnt out and ran a pump motor test. There's a burning smell coming from it, I ordered a new pump motor and hopefully it'll resolve the issue. I've already disassembled the washer to check from blockage, even used a shop vac on the drain hose, but nothing. The washer is about 20 years old so....
Good morning from the U.S. My washer stopped during the draining cycle and was playing the melody. I did not know what that meant, so I powered my machine off and unplugged it to reset it. When I tried to run the drain cycle again it did the beeping. That is when I came to UA-cam to see what was going on. I found your video and did the diagnostic. It gave me code 37. I bailed the water out and followed your infections to remove the pump and check for blockage, it was dripping a small amount of water. I cleaned it out as described and put the pump back in to test it, but I went ahead and ordered a new pump. It still wouldn’t empty. When new part arrived I put it in, also installed the inline fuse on the brown wire in control panel. I cycled it to drain but it only recirculated the water. I then completely disassembled the tub and pulled the filter from the bottom of the tub to see if there was something there. There was nothing. I watched more videos and it appeared that maybe the diverter was the problem. I pulled it off and cleaned it but there was nothing there. I ordered a new diverter and installed it. When I cycled the drain, it drained a little bit but then it just started the recirculation and spin cycle but would not drain. Please help. I love this machine and the technicians at the local appliance store do not give me confidence in their ability to repair my unit because when I showed them the diverter they didn’t recognize it and asked if it was for a dishwasher. I am going to go through the whole cleaning and checking process again for a blockage but I feel like there is a different problem. Code is still 37. Thanks for your help!!
If you leave the wires unplugged from the diverter valve and put it on drain will it drain? If no still recirculates then there is a problem with the diverter valve jammed or not sealing or installed backwards maybe?. If yes drains ok with no recirculating then the controller could be damaged from moisture in the diverter and powering up the diverter all the time, switching it to recirculate mode. in which case would need ne controller and diverter (unless you can find someone to replace check if the diverter triac on the controller is shorted and solder a new one on. People who can repair PCB's are harder to find then appliance technicians though!)
Thank you for this incredible advice. I was about to go out and spend $1500 on a new machine tomorrow but found a hair ribbon caught around the pump. The only issue I had was not being exactly sure of which clip to lift to remove the pump, but soon sorted that out.

Awesome advice that has been so helpful! My machine is now spinning again. Our problem was the black/green cable wasn’t connected for some reason, so didn’t have to remove the pump. Just had to plug it in. Very helpful!!!
The black/green wire is an Earth wire, while it is important for safety it wont stop the pump going. If the pump is starting to fail it may run for a few minutes before overheating and stopping for a while until it cools down to reset, so keep an eye on it and if it is stopping and/or smelling hot you will need a new pump.

Great video mate, I was pretty sure it was my pump that wasn't working properly in that it would pump a bit then stop and if I left it a while it would pump again, but the part that helped me the most was when you mentioned if it's below 30 Ohms it is probably overheating and that's why it's not working properly, I checked the Ohms after it cooled down which took a long time it was so bloody hot and it was on 29 Ohms so I put in a new pump and it's working again but now it's working again after 4 washes another problem appeared, now when it goes through the rinse cycle and finishes instead of refilling for the final rinse it's just repeating the spin rinse cycle, ah well I guess that's life now I'll have to find a video to fix that, but thanks your video was really helpful! That is usually an indication of goin gout of balance, if will fill back up to try and redistribute the clothes. If its just started happening and if you have one of the models that has a physical Out Of Balance lever make sure the machine is not leaning back or to the right too much, level of slightly forward is best.
@@motrepairs Thanks mate I don't know what I did but it's working okay again, I accidently hit the wrong button when I was after an error code and I think I might have changed some configuration or something so I pressed what I had earlier in the opposite direction and it's working but I'm not sure if that was the problem, you learn by your mistakes so if I need to do anything like that in the future I'll be more careful, thanks again mate! I actually bought a Fisher and Paykel lint filter which fits inside the agitator drive under the top cap which some use for the softener solution and find it filters a ton of lint from the machine. It is quite expensive at $50 but worth every cent!! As a matter of fact, I have stopped using the softener because I find it scums up the machine after a period of use and I don't notice anything untoward when I do my washing.
Fantastically clear guide! My pump had same overheating symptoms - stopped/started every 20 or so minutes, smelled "burnt", measured 22 ohms. But NO blockage to be found! Should I still change the pump? or is there another accessible spot to check if a blockage is elsewhere?
If resistance is below 31 ohms then yes need to replace it or it will burn out fully and possibly damage the control board. There may not be a blockage it may just be a failing pump.

Thanks so much. our machine has been running funny for a few months. today it stopped on fault code 37. pump would run but gave the hot smell and would trip on over heat. pulled the pump and it had 33 ohms when was hot to touch and 28 ohms cold. replaced it with a pump I got from an old machine, it had 33 ohms cold. then watched your other vids and gave the machine a birthday and clean. we feel like we have a new machine now. ill ring you tomorrow to give you some beer money. thanks so much.
Your Welcome. Yes when the pumps get hot the resistance rises, so if its low it can look ok, as you discovered.
Thank you once again, two months ago I had to clean out my longhaired black cats fur from the top. This time he went one better and I had to do both top and bottom. No mean feat when I have a buggered hip and back. I try hard to get rid of excess fur before I wash, but your tutorial is so easy to understand. 👍🤗😻

I have a WA80T65GW1 and it stopped with error 41, bailed the water (it was getting sticky, phew) and turned it on it's side, pump was a newer one, had a creamy coloured rubber elbow connector, 3 screws, popped the elbow connector and a 20cm length of fluffy crap was visible, after a short struggle and grunt, remove, clean of excessive water, righted the unit, plugged in, rinse/spin cycle, "Bob is your uncle!" Thanks for giving me the courage to try this myself, my wallet is significantly better off 🙂
Yes the newer pumps are a little more difficult but I'm glad you got it sorted.

Thank you sooo much for an easy to follow video. Many UA-cam videos are not videos, more like a talk show and before they get to the point they start with the weather forecast and end up with what their dog had for breakfast. Yours is so to the point and even when you are just talking you are unloading heaps of stats and valuable experience tips. I was ready to get a new machine when I saw this video. My pump had 29 Ohms on the coil and longer I held my Fluke meter on it it would drop to 28.3 Ohm. Trusted your information (33 Ohm specs) and went to get a new one for $74. I put it in and got my machine back alive and running. Did not find any blockage (with your easy method) so wasn't sure why the pump got faulty. Then during the first full cycle wash I noticed it got stuck in first rinse cycle (two orange and one red light on the dash). It would kick out the water and start spinning and spraying and draining again but it would not switch to the next cycle. It would repeat this forever unless I press the forward button to go to the next rinsing cycle (one orange and one red light). After this it would complete rinsing and finish spinning and it would turn off as it should. So I guess there is a problem with the controller and maybe that is why the drain pump paid the price (with my wallet). Now when we hear the rinse starting and the drain pump starts making that cavitation noise after the first rinse we go to the machine and manually switch to the next rinsing cycle. I just watched your long way cleaning the pump from the top and will try that one too but already we are happy to use it like this as the machine is really good and served us for years trouble free. What is your model number? If it is draining out to the point of cavitating then there is probably no need to take the inner bowl out.
If you leave it long enough it should eventually bring up a code, may take 8-9 + retries though. It does do a spray rinse as the first rinse depending on what settings are programmed, to save water. have you left it for 10-15min to see if it goes on to the second rinse? If it is stopping spinning to refill ,then drain its usually a balance problem, but then it wouldn't do the rest of the cycle no problem.
My French pump failed about 2 years ago and I could only get that replacement you demonstrate at the end. And today it jammed full of grit underneath the impeller exactly as you warned. Also the replacement doesn't have the plastic lug/clip retainer. The replacement pump is on Trade Me for $75. I see that it includes a warning "Does not suit environments where high amounts of sand can build up in the pump e.g Kindergartens." I have explained this to my wife so hopefully she doesn't bork it a third time.

Glad I could help. Funny story I used to collect bread bag clips for a strange reason as a kid, and blocked mums washing machine. The guy who came and fixed it was one of the techs who trained me years later.

Thanks for the videos. I've watched 4 of them. Make things a lot easier when you know what to and understand how the machine works. Now I've clean the pump and bowl the next job will be to replace the noisy bearings.

Thanks so much for your video as I was sure my 13 year old machine was history when I heard the humming noise and smelt the hot electrical smell while the pump was completely jammed. I thought it likely needed expensive repairs which I couldn't justify on such an old machine. But before giving up on the machine I googled the symptoms which lead straight to your video. I found the pump was blocked by a cleaning cloth. I was surprised to get a reading 36 ohms at the pumps contacts so I refitted the pump and it's working perfectly. I can't work out why the pump is still working despite the hot electrical burning smell. Thanks for saving me buying a new machine and I'm very grateful you took the time to make this video
The pump relies on the fan at the bottom to keep it cool, so when its jammed it will overheat until its safety overheat cuts out. If you are lucky and have stopped it before trying too many times it wont have done any damage.
@@motrepairs thanks so much for the reply. This time I must have been lucky as I started a load of washing and forgot about the machine. I investigated when the house seemed too quiet! I quickly cut the power at the wall when I heard the humming which sounded the same hum I've heard for the old brushed motors. When one of those old motors jam the armature can quickly burn out
The motor connector should have a fuse located behind the top panel. It'll blow if the motor is overheating to prevent damage. I have this fisher & paykel washer as well and it has a fuse. Mine currently blew during the drain cycle so I have to take a look at the drain pump to see if it's clogged.
@@stealthxg5045 What country are you in? The AUs/NZ machines have fuses soldered on to the PCB but usually if they are blown then other parts of the PCB are damaged as well. Im not aware of any pump only fuses so it may be only in your country.
@@motrepairs I'm in the US. My model is the GWL11. There's a fuse connector on the pump line that tells you what fuse to use. I installed a new fuse as my other burnt out and ran a pump motor test. There's a burning smell coming from it, I ordered a new pump motor and hopefully it'll resolve the issue. I've already disassembled the washer to check from blockage, even used a shop vac on the drain hose, but nothing. The washer is about 20 years old so....
Good morning from the U.S. My washer stopped during the draining cycle and was playing the melody. I did not know what that meant, so I powered my machine off and unplugged it to reset it. When I tried to run the drain cycle again it did the beeping. That is when I came to UA-cam to see what was going on. I found your video and did the diagnostic. It gave me code 37. I bailed the water out and followed your infections to remove the pump and check for blockage, it was dripping a small amount of water. I cleaned it out as described and put the pump back in to test it, but I went ahead and ordered a new pump. It still wouldn’t empty. When new part arrived I put it in, also installed the inline fuse on the brown wire in control panel. I cycled it to drain but it only recirculated the water. I then completely disassembled the tub and pulled the filter from the bottom of the tub to see if there was something there. There was nothing. I watched more videos and it appeared that maybe the diverter was the problem. I pulled it off and cleaned it but there was nothing there. I ordered a new diverter and installed it. When I cycled the drain, it drained a little bit but then it just started the recirculation and spin cycle but would not drain. Please help. I love this machine and the technicians at the local appliance store do not give me confidence in their ability to repair my unit because when I showed them the diverter they didn’t recognize it and asked if it was for a dishwasher. I am going to go through the whole cleaning and checking process again for a blockage but I feel like there is a different problem. Code is still 37.

If you leave the wires unplugged from the diverter valve and put it on drain will it drain? If no still recirculates then there is a problem with the diverter valve jammed or not sealing or installed backwards maybe?. If yes drains ok with no recirculating then the controller could be damaged from moisture in the diverter and powering up the diverter all the time, switching it to recirculate mode. in which case would need ne controller and diverter (unless you can find someone to replace check if the diverter triac on the controller is shorted and solder a new one on. People who can repair PCB's are harder to find then appliance technicians though!)

Thank you for this incredible advice. I was about to go out and spend $1500 on a new machine tomorrow but found a hair ribbon caught around the pump. The only issue I had was not being exactly sure of which clip to lift to remove the pump, but soon sorted that out.
For over 25 years use I've replaced two cold one hot water control solenoid & one read switch not bad reliability at all & it is still in use

Awesome advice that has been so helpful! My machine is now spinning again. Our problem was the black/green cable wasn’t connected for some reason, so didn’t have to remove the pump. Just had to plug it in. Very helpful!!!
The black/green wire is an Earth wire, while it is important for safety it wont stop the pump going. If the pump is starting to fail it may run for a few minutes before overheating and stopping for a while until it cools down to reset, so keep an eye on it and if it is stopping and/or smelling hot you will need a new pump.

Great video mate, I was pretty sure it was my pump that wasn't working properly in that it would pump a bit then stop and if I left it a while it would pump again, but the part that helped me the most was when you mentioned if it's below 30 Ohms it is probably overheating and that's why it's not working properly, I checked the Ohms after it cooled down which took a long time it was so bloody hot and it was on 29 Ohms so I put in a new pump and it's working again but now it's working again after 4 washes another problem appeared, now when it goes through the rinse cycle and finishes instead of refilling for the final rinse it's just repeating the spin rinse cycle, ah well I guess that's life now I'll have to find a video to fix that, but thanks your video was really helpful! That is usually an indication of goin gout of balance, if will fill back up to try and redistribute the clothes. If its just started happening and if you have one of the models that has a physical Out Of Balance lever make sure the machine is not leaning back or to the right too much, level of slightly forward is best.
@@motrepairs Thanks mate I don't know what I did but it's working okay again, I accidently hit the wrong button when I was after an error code and I think I might have changed some configuration or something so I pressed what I had earlier in the opposite direction and it's working but I'm not sure if that was the problem, you learn by your mistakes so if I need to do anything like that in the future I'll be more careful, thanks again mate! I actually bought a Fisher and Paykel lint filter which fits inside the agitator drive under the top cap which some use for the softener solution and find it filters a ton of lint from the machine. It is quite expensive at $50 but worth every cent!! As a matter of fact, I have stopped using the softener because I find it scums up the machine after a period of use and I don't notice anything untoward when I do my washing.

Fantastically clear guide! My pump had same overheating symptoms - stopped/started every 20 or so minutes, smelled "burnt", measured 22 ohms. But NO blockage to be found! Should I still change the pump? or is there another accessible spot to check if a blockage is elsewhere?
If resistance is below 31 ohms then yes need to replace it or it will burn out fully and possibly damage the control board. There may not be a blockage it may just be a failing pump.
