- Sekiya's Restaurant & Delicatessen is a place we used to go to all the time. It is located in Kaimuki, across Kaimuki High school. Great parking , good selection, okazuya and awesome staff!!
Sekiya's opens 1935 and sold portions for 10 cents during WWII Amazing history.
location: 2746 Kaimuki Ave, Honolulu, HI 96816 thank you .....
Your mum looked so happy .
Thumbs up for Mom! She is getting so comfortable in front of the camera. Her funny side is so nice.
She has a scary side too..... mommy dearest
Thanks, Niki, for another fun and delicious video which brings back very fond memories. My mom used to take us to Sekiya's when I was a little kid. I'd have inari sushi and namasu. YUM! Through the years when I couldn't get daikon, I'd make namasu with very thinly sliced cucumber and carrots and add fresh ginger.
Btw, to my eyes, Okasama is looking very, very well! That makes my heart happy!
thank you... she did seem extra happy... must be Sekiya's..
@@NikiNikiHawaii Haha! A stomach full of good food does put a smile on most people's faces!
It is amazing that Sekiya's is still in business. The front of the restaurant still looks the same, I don't remember the large parking lot. I was at Kaimuki High my 10th, 11th and the start of my 12th year. We use to go to Sekiya's for a snack after school before we walked up to Foodland's to catch the bus to Palolo Valley. That would have been 1957 through 1959.
My mom used to make her own tsukemono. Napa cabbage, garlic, kombu and chili peppers and lots of salt.
Last time I went to Sekiyas it was still old looking inside.
yup.. looks the same...
Good memories are great!✌🏼❤️✌🏼❤️
we really have to enjoy the moments... even the small ones yeah....
I love the way you didn't waste the food..& packed it for later
Your Moms Correct, batter on tempura was way too thick! The sukiyaki appeared cool/cold and not too many beef!
the tempura was shocking... should have gotten the saimin. the place was pretty crowded..

When I was growing up, Sekiya's was the ONLY Japanese restaurant our family used to go out to eat at (we also got the okazu for lunch). My mom said there really weren't other Japanese restaurants around Honolulu. Thatʻs why this IS really Old Time Japanese in Hawaiʻi! And the tempura was Hawa'ii okazuya-style with the thick batter. I guess that's how it was fried and it had to last in the bento box in the plantation days. I'm sure people from Japan think it's too heavy compared to the light, crispy batter of good tempura in Japan.
Like your vids a lot. Makes me feel relaxed
kami I agree! Her voice is soothing.
thank you....now I can tell my hubby that because he rolls his eyes when I start talking...
I ❤ your Mom!😁
i LOVE sekiya’s so bad, i loved their tsukemono, tokyo style udon, the bbq beef skewers and their shrimp tempura, i miss it so much since i’ve moved from home :((
always wnderful to see you and your Mom!!!
Yummy looks Soo delicious! Love ole school Japanese cuisine thank you ✌️🍀🌹🤗🤗🤗
OMG! I haven't been to Sekiya's in such a LONG TIME! We used to go there for Saimen or Wunton Mein. I didn't think they were still open. There were so many Japanese restaurants when I was a kid. We also loved to go to Wisteria but I heard they closed.
oh yeah WISTERIA's parking was always full...
I do remember going to Sekiya long time ago also! It was good. That sukiyaki looked delicious. I love Pork Tofu. 👍💜😋
Great video hun. It's wonderful to see your mom so happy and smiling. I always look firward to your videos, they make me so happy. I hope you guys have a great week!!
Thank you... My mom seems to be enjoying making videos.... You have a fantastic week too!!!
All your videos are perfect for winding down! Love watching you and your mom explore the local eateries in Honolulu!
Thank you. My mom loves to eat out or take out. Maybe we will all become that way when we get older....
I love your mom so much....reminds me of my mom. The way you both speak a mix of Japanese and English is just like how we used to talk!! We used have an eatery that we would go to when we were little too- had eggs, hot dogs and gohan for breakfast, and all kinds of homemade type of okazu for lunch and dinner. Unfortunately, it’s not there anymore...
I wish I could go back in time for a week... AWWWWW
Hello ladies!!!!! All that food looks ono. I hope I remember this place next time we go visit my family again. Really want to try their butterfish.
Your mom is adorable, looked very nice with the stripe shirt. Both lunch looked delicious with all those various veggies, noodle and beef. Tempura is a fave.😛
thank you.. I told her she looked good in that striped shirt... I'm glad you noticed
hi Nikki love your video
That restaurant has plenty of history and the food you all had seemed to be real good and your mother enjoyed it so much. You all was eating real good and I would love to go to that place to eat and not leave anything on my plate untouched.
Growing up, we use to go there every week sometimes twice.... The tempura was not made that way back then. I was actually surprised to see that they make it like their okazuya counter. The old days had a flaky topping and little strands of batter that you could dip in their sauce. My mom loved their pork tofu and my dad would order their tonkatsu. It also was our go-to place for saimin and bbq sticks. We were thinking of trying Sekiya again but I guess we'll stick to Kabuki Restaurant for now. In the late 60s there used to be a tempura shop called Tanuki's in the little building on the corner of S. King and Keeaumoku Sts. Little lady ran it and if my memory is correct, it was counter service.
Looks like a great spot.
it was okayyyyyyy
So lovely Thanks for sharing!!!! Now I really want tempura! 😂
Your mother always looks happy when she is eating. Thanks for sharing, but that tempura looks like it had corn dog batter on it, lol!
Ownership changed hands two or three times since I was there last. Their saimin and bbq stick was what I looked forward to when I was a kid.
shucks.. I should have gotten the saimin. My son told me the same thing... I wish they would upgrade it "just a little" ...such a good location
I can’t believe that they serve tea when the cover top is gone..no can throw away old tea pot.collection I guess
Until next time ladies!✌🏼❤️✌🏼❤️
Haven't been to Sekiya in ages. I see their tempura still hasn't improved lol! Their chicken tofu was good...and orange freeze and green river soda...oh yeah!
ORANGE FREEZE... yummmmmmy... I think we enjoyed sitting inside the restaurant more than anything. I felt like a little kid again..
I love gobo, all this food makes me miss my mom.
mom's make the best food yeah.. even when they mess up
Your sukiyaki looked good. Yeah I agree the batter was too thick! Proper tempura is excellent and so tasty.
Used to go to Sekiya's as a child as well. They had a juke box and song selections at each table. Btw, do you have a video of your mom making tsukemono, or can she do one, please?
oh yes.. tsukemono.. she makes tsukemono all the time. I will get some home videos on that for you...
My fave was the delicatessen sekiyas hash
the tempura looks bomb lots of old people like deep fried food.
oh yeah.. my mom loved vegetable tempura
I remember going there as a little kid too!..if im not mistaken theres a pond in the back right?.. hmmm.. also, i graduated from kaimuki high. =) gosh i miss the islands.
yes, the pond is still there. I swear it looked bigger when I was a kid... Kaimuki High School.. good school.
I heard Fukuya Okazuya is delicious..
I know, in Kalihi , Matsumoto's, Mitsuba's, Toshi's and even Gulick are pretty tasty ...
Oh I need to check that out. We have never been big Okazuya fans.. maybe we have to go check one out
Don't forget the green river 😊. Used to go there after school sometimes. There or Bea's Drive-in.
Oh Beas's drive in.... Slush float!!
Yup! Good old days!
Ocha dake oishi..... Honto ne, Niki no okasama. ☺️ That luncheon tempura did not look good at all......I’m sorry sister! Your sukiyaki looked oishisou though. I’m so happy that your mama was having a great day! Her smile is so pretty!
Have you ever thought of getting an air fryer sister? Just ask Lady Murasaki....she uses hers all the time, and loves it!
Thank you for sharing your day with us!
Air fryer? Hmmm. You are definitely the queen of cool ideas... Yeah the tempura was "chotto" ne.....? You are so observant, mom has been in a really good mood lately.. ... good but strange... stay tuned
Niki Niki.....Sister, I’m just the queen of gadgets. 😂 I have an air fryer, and it’s great, because you can “fry” foods, without the added oils. It works really well for reheating/crisping up foods-such as tempura. I’ve made fried chicken wings, chicken legs. I’ve even made a whole roasted chicken in mine. People use it to make tortilla chips.....I’m still trying to figure that one out. My tortilla wedges fly around, inside of the basket. 🤦🏻♀️
I’m so happy that your okasama is happy. Makes it easier for you too, ne? I just love how you take such great care of your mama! ♥️
The food your mom bought looks better then the resturant food.
Shrimp tempura taste better back in the day.
Sadly, these oldies but goodies are slowly disappearing from the picture.
your mothers arthritic hands reminds me of my aunts old hands/
can you do reviews on gulick deli and fukuya deli?
yes.. We can try Fukuya on King street?
@@NikiNikiHawaii Awesome.......Yes, its on King Street, soon after the Humane Society if you heading westbound. :)
hmm gonna have to ask shinichi about that $$ lol
Did you & Shinichi go to Kaimuki High School?
Actually, we moved right before I started high school. So I ended up at McKinley. My brother did not attend and got his GED early and moved to Japan...
The Japanese food prices were high but American food was cheap.
i know I hate that... it's more expensive now. I keep telling my mom we need to take out so we can save on TIP. With these prices, tips can cost the same price as another entree....
Is that what you would consider Okinawan style tempura?
I don't know what you would call that.. My son said I should have gotten the saimin. They have good saimin.
How was the Udon?
so..so... better than the tempura...
@@NikiNikiHawaii Aww.
It’s not the same as it used to be. I don’t believe all okazuya are like this one. If I am ono for okazuya food, i will go to Saint Louis Delicatesen, Fukuyama or Nuuanu Okazuya - depending what i want to eat.
Batter too thick!
NIKI U AND YOUR MOM ARE JUST PRESCIOUS TOGETHER. I LOVE IT WHEN MOM'S IN A GOOD MOOD AND U CAN ENJOY EACH OTHER'S COMPANY. I'VE BEEN TRYING TO DO THINGS WITH MY MOM BUT AS U KNOW THEY GET INTO THESE MOODS AND THERE'S JUST NO SNAPPING THEM OUT OF IT. ENJOY EACH AND EVERY MOMENT WITH MOM U KNOW MY HEART GOES OUT TO THE BOTH OF U. I HAVE BUT 1 WISH. ACTUALLY 2 THE FIRST IS TO GET MY HANDS ON SOME OF THE DELICIOUS FOOD AND OF COURSE SOME MOCHI . APPARENTLY THERE'S A STORE OUT THERE DOWN THERE ( I CAN NEVER GET MY DIRECTIONS RIGHT) THAT SPECIALIZES IN MOCHI. AND THE 2ND WISH IS TO GET IN CONTACT WITH YOUR BROTHER. HE'S HARDER TO CONTACT THEN PRESIDENT TRUMP. I'LL KEEP TRYING TILL I TAKE MY LAST BREATH. WITH THE MEDICATION I'M GETTING THAT MIGHT COME SOONER THEN LATER LOL. IT IS HORRIBLE THO WHICH IS WHY I'M TRYING TO GET YOUR BROTHER. I'M HOPING HE CAN HELP. 😷😷😐😐
I have to get my mom in more better moods... try his other channels or instagram?
I think their food was better in the old days. Not as good anymore
I agree.. or we changed?
doesn't look authentic very americanized Japanese food.
I think old school Local Hawaii style Japanese food. They opened in 1935 and served food back in WWII. I've noticed that many of the old school places here have the similar style. Maybe a little Japanese, a little Okinawan and maybe a twist?
Sekiya's makes the best corned beef hash; you should try that next time! :)
