Essentially, cl_interp 5, lag hard, strafe backwards into enemies, hold M1, and pray lag compensation comes through for you.
to change it back. default is cl_interp .1, but i'd recommend cl_interp .0152 for best performance

no i think most people dont know this.... ive been a spy main for a long time never heard of shit like this and ive learned some fancy tips for spy. but ths is abusable as fuck and even if its for my main i dont realy aprove of this at all... its not a cheat or an explot. its a command built into the game.... just hope not every spy main now or idiot will try to abuse this now. videos like this tend to lead to that.

As I understand it, cl_interp just simulates a longer ping time anyway. What they need to do is fix lag compensation so it can't be used to break the rules.

Without using the command lag is bad for all classes excluding pyro. I find it most frustrating when playing sniper, spy, and scout. So many lost opportunities....

Have a bad a Wi-Fi connection.
The people who are still doing this, Valve knew about this around the 21st of August 2020, and they patched it, so even using cl_interp 5, it doesn't work now
It does still work. They patched 0 lerp, which was a different thing.

So for a simple brief explanation, the higher you set your interp (default .1), the more delay you put between yourself and the server, effectively giving yourself lag. Which allows you to utilize lag compensation. It's no different than playing on a laggy server. And no this isn't a cheat or an exploit so there's no need to worry if you wanna try it out for yourself. Just don't forget to set your interp back to how you like it when you're done.
default: cl_interp .1
hitscan: cl_interp .033
projectile: cl_interp .0152 {this is the one I normally use}
default is actually 0.1, max is 0.5 not 5, it's measured in seconds where 0.1 is 100ms of interpolation and 0.5 is 500ms.
ofc if your cl_interp_ratio would give a higher value (ie you set it to 5 and your cl_interp is 0.0152) it uses that instead; cl_interp_ratio generates a normal interp value based on server's tickrate.

I remember when this was still a thing you could do, you set it to 700, decloak in someone’s face, run in a half circle and click when spy’s arm raised.
It was like playing with 1000 ping but everyone was smooth still.
It also made for some absolutely garbage sniper duels because you could literally be behind a wall and get headshot because of how the game treated the “lag”
It always works like that, most games including tf2 favor the shooter and so you can get headshot behind a wall with a normal cl_interp value, which still lags behind, just a lot less.
edit: this explanation is kinda confusing if you don't know basic game networking already i guess
Some technical explanation:
beware that this was recorded from a replay which shows the server perspective. With interpolation, on the shooters(only hitscan eg. ambassador)/stabbers(melee weapons are hitscan) perspective you will still shoot and stab the models you see on your screen, the models lag behind the server by cl_interp amount +1/2 ping. Cl_interp 5 would be 5 seconds "lagging behind". However cl_interp is capped at 0.5, which corresponds to what we see in this video ( Stary stabs them from where they stood 0.5 seconds +his ping before ).
Another thing, refering to 1:58, is that colliding with other players and receiving damage is not interpolated, meaning for collision you will bump into an invisible model ahead of the visual model. And for receiving damage, you will get shot,launched,or die, and see 0.5 seconds afterwards, the eg. rocket impact to where you were positioned.
My 2cents:
1.its 100% not bannable
2.its not a big problem because its mostly worse than normal interp
3.if you get facestabbed doesnt mean the spy is using this necessarily, 99% player don't i guess.
4.idealy, it would be removed by lowering cl_interp max to for example 0.1 , its obviously not gonna happen but i dont think it matters

@@oit5545 No it wasn't, They just fixed being able to insert intetpolation values under 0.15, Because values under 0.15 are treated as 0.15, So basically they just fixed a visual glitch by making invalid interp values under 0.15 display as the closest valid interp value.
If you put cl_interp 5 into console and played at least 10 games of spy you'd shut up but you won't because your maturity level is that of a 4 year old child who didn't get what he wanted at the store so he fell over and started crying because it used to work for past 4 years and his parents didn't read raising functioning humans 101
