Everyone starts watching at different times. Although I watched casually as a kid during the Hogan and Macho Man era, I didn't really get into wrestling until the late 90s because of the N64 wrestling games. I kind of dwindled off of wrestling after Eddie Guerrero died and only came in here and there to see how it was going. CM Punk peaked my interest a little around the pipe bomb but they also had the muppets and crap on the show and I was wondering what the hell happened. This new era with HHH in charge looks promising but I'm still watching clips only and not the whole shows anymore.
Vince doesn't like sneezing cause he says it's something someone can't control. I guess Vince liked controlling everything. So sneezing is something everyone can't control.

In Carmel there is a city ordinance written in 1920 that said women can not wear high heels over 2 inches within the city limits without a permit. The thought was to protect the town from lawsuits. But Carmel is so small there would never be a WWE event there. The closest place a WWE event would be would be Santa Clara, for a PLE, or San Jose or San Francisco. Carmel used to have, and still has some weird city ordinances on the books. You used to not be able to eat ice cream on the side walk, but when Clint Eastwood was elected mayor that was overturned. Most cities still have strange city or county laws on the books, most are from 1970 and earlier. Some towns it's actually illegal to swear, one town says you are not allowed to walk an elephant down the street, or you can not be outside if deemed ugly, or you are not allowed to install two bathtubs in a house.
maven you got me into wrestling. always thought it was dumb but i finally get it and its amazing. love watching your old matches. hope your happy and healthy brother
Two things I did notice, when Rock and SCSA were in a feud, they'd do the others finisher. I remember when Joey Mercury got gashed in the ladder match and they had to take him out.
the "Don't steal someone else's move" needs to have "Without permission" added to it, as often wrestlers will steal another's move as part of a storyline or something, but do so with the permission of the other wrestler. As for Mercury: He was legit injured in that match; broken orbital bone, IIRC; he HAD to be taken out of it.
"No real names" Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, Eddie Guerrero, John Cena, Randy Orton, Shelton Benjamin, Charlie Haas, Mickie James, Trish Stratus, Jacqueline Moore, Jeff Jarrett, Mick Foley, Natalia Niedhart....oh they fucked up on that one
I think it was more about when talent had a stage name, it's considered kind of a big deal in show biz to out someone like that as it could be construed as an invasion of privacy or even safety (kayfabe isn't only for pro wrestlers).
The blue pants and heels thing is just old laws no one got around to changing. Mostly because it's so ridiculous. Idk if any have been removed , but most judges would laugh that out of the courtroom
This isn't true, there's never been an "old law" about this in NC, WWE made it up themselves on an article called "Five WWE rules you didn’t know existed" where they were just being silly, but no one read the final line that said these rules aren't real.
IDK if it's true, but I heard something similar, but it wasn't a Wednesday. I heard that people weren't supposed to wear blue or red trunks ever in NC due to Ric Flair wearing blue or red trunks based on if he was gonna win or lose.
Kind of like no eating oranges while taking a bath. I think this one is from Indiana and it's an actual law. However, who's going to know and who's going to care. I know Michigan has a no cursing rule while out in public and again, nobody cares.
Vince hates it when someone sneezes while in his presents. He also hates it when he sneezes. Word is that he believes sneezing is a sign of weakness because one can not control a sneeze. At least that’s what I’ve seen / heard during numerous shoot interviews. Thanks! 🤙🏻
The stunt granny thing is a huge meme, both within the IWC and around workers/talent. So yeah, kinda not surprising that he wanted to throw that reference in :P.
About chokeholds: I practice Jiu Jitsu and even if it sounds false, chokes are one of the safest techniques you can use. The thing about chokes is, that you do not strangle the person (cut off airflow) but you press onto the artery going to the brain, means you effectively cut the bloodstream towards the brain, that's why people fall unconscious relatively fast. Only thing which can go wrong is if you hold a choke for too long, that way you can permanently damage the brain, but that only applies if you hold it for 10+ seconds after a person has gone unconscious. I guess it is technically true that some of the chokes used in Wrestling wouldnt work in real life, but they are perceived as chokes and they are all over the place. I don't know why Men's Health thought they wouldnt be used.
I am glad that the channel is as big as it's right now, You deserve all the success that you get maven. Your level of understanding & love for the business is something to be admired even as ex-wrestler.
I had honestly never heard of you before and haven’t watched wrestling since I was a kid in the late 90s but I have been absolutely lapping up your videos, Maven. Really enjoying all of this insights and you come across so well. Hope you’re doing well.
I think the rule of not putting other shows over is starting to get relaxed a bit. When Jordynne Grace arrived at Royal Rumble with her TNA Championship belt, I think it is a sign that HHH will be willing to work with other shows since it sort of benefits everyone involved.
It actually depends. Once upon a time WWF never mentioned WCW and vice versa but there were times when it couldn't be ignored like when Rick Flair brought the big gold belt to WWF or when Madusa threw the WWF women's title belt in the trash on Nitro but when the Attitude Era was in full swing all bets were off. But back in the territorial day cross promotions were commonplace. Bob Backlund wrestled both Harley Race & Rick Flair(NWA) and Nick Bockwinkle(AWA). Superstar Billy Graham wrestled Harley Race. Dusty Rhodes would wrestle in NY a lot. Also, I don't think the WWE thinks of TNA nor AEW as actual competition so there's probably that.
I was never really a fan of Maven the wrestler, but after watching most the videos on this channel, gotta say I've become a fan of Maven the ordinary human. This is definitely some of the best educational content for professional wrestling out there! Keep up the great work!
They way your channel has blown up in such a short amount of time is so well deserved! The time and effort you put into these videos dosent go unnoticed. Keep up the amazing work
Speaking of words that are prohibited, I recently heard Seth Rollins or someone else call someone a "prick" on Raw the other day, even though WWE fired someone for saying it in the past.
6:52 glad that The Undertaker and Kane got to keep the Tombstone Pile-driver. I think it was a bit safer too the way they did it because they would start off slower than the regular pile-driver.
I love what Maven has done with his UA-cam channel, such great content and interesting topics that comes from his first hand experience and behind the scenes. Keep up the great work Mav!
@@tomsanford9391 Kenta used the GTS before Punk. Kenta always wanted to have a match with him too, but Punk had been ducking him. Rollins, by his own admission, stole the Stomp. He stole it from Japanese wrestler Naomichi Marufuji.
This rule was bent in certain big matches, though. Didn't The Rock give HHH a Pedigree during their Iron Man match that time? But yeah, it's a Big Spot moment, a once-off thing, so I guess it doesn't really count.
WWE has integrated superstars from TNA in their Royal Rumble a couple of times. Hope that opens the doors for them to work with other promotions. Maybe once a couple of years, the top stars fight opposing show's stars. Like a promotion battle of the gods.
Pretty sure the "no blading" and "stop after bleeding" rules is in reference to the company now, especially since 2008 when they went PG and didn't do intentional blood any more.
I remember one of the WWECW match between Christian and Shelton Benjamin in a ladder match I believe. One of the guys started bleeding and they stopped the whole match. Just imagine, the hardcore ECW doesn't even allow you to bleed and wrestle. So fucking pathetic.

@@MavenKHuffman I was a teenager when that came out. Even while I knew wrestling was a work, and that whole show was cheesy for its time, to me, it was cheesy in a "so bad, it's good" kinda way and I actually found a lot of it interesting and informative, like how spots are called.
When it comes to getting color, there's also state laws involved; Louisville, ky is one of the largest cities in the u.s, with a long history of raising great wrestlers, but you'll never see a big WWE event there because there's laws about showing blood in a live performance, or some bs like that. It's really silly. But they rarely go there at all because of it.

The "no chokeholds" thing brings to mind the feud between Kurt Angle and Tazz where Kurt accused Tazz of beating him with an illegal chokehold (the Tazzmission), but it was just a story gimmick.
@@lewisb85 Under the chin is a submission hold my dude. But if it transitions into a choke the ref gives you a 5 second count. Monsoon was great at calling out illegal punches and choke holds. Monsoon would point out “closed fists” are not technically permitted, nor are choke holds.
@@lewisb85 they are not allowed to apply "real" choke holds so that breathing isnt restricted (for example hells gate is applied in such a way so that no pressure is being applied to the throat) this is why most times commentary will use a phrase like " modified choke hold"

@@jeffmcclure4047Yeah but the "rule" only exists for in-company wrestlers. Besides it is well known that WWE didn't respect DDP during that era, so they weren't going to hound their golden boy Orton for doing so.

@@boraonline7036 Who? Goldberg? Yeah the dude was reckless in the ring and concussed Bret, but Bret 100% made it worse by deciding to then wrestle 9 matches right after getting severely concussed.
I 100% agree with the business casual look. There's the reason why The Rock looked like a mega star even in public, and the same goes for most of the talent that thought like him compared to the guys just wearing sweats. There are exceptions to every rule, but overall, if you wanna look like a star and be treated like one, you have to walk the walk and talk the talk.

That's exactly why he refused to grow any facial hair for so long. In his own words, he "couldn't let it win"

The stunt granny thing is a huge meme, both within the IWC and around workers/talent. So yeah, kinda not surprising that he wanted to throw that reference in :P.
Thing is that was harley race messing with the producers, he told stories that were semi legit.

I think the rule of not putting other shows over is starting to get relaxed a bit. When Jordynne Grace arrived at Royal Rumble with her TNA Championship belt, I think it is a sign that HHH will be willing to work with other shows since it sort of benefits everyone involved.
To be fair, WWE has always cross promoted other brands. They did it with AAA and ECW. They just dont mention competitors.
Jordan's showing is one very rare occasion. Don't expect much to change.
Isn't TNA under the same umbrella? Don't expect them to side with AEW
@@raul5081 kenny omega was literally AEW and TNA's top champion simultaneously two-and-a-half years ago

Some wrestlers are more equal than others.

This rule was bent in certain big matches, though. Didn't The Rock give HHH a Pedigree during their Iron Man match that time? But yeah, it's a Big Spot moment, a once-off thing, so I guess it doesn't really count.

Pretty sure the "no blading" and "stop after bleeding" rules is in reference to the company now, especially since 2008 when they went PG and didn't do intentional blood any more.
They occasionally have intentional blood but it is done hardway, like when Brock Lesnar elbowed Randy Orton and busted him open. That was planned.
