And they a caught red handed when it comes to their race and they're like "oh shit!", so they're forced to accept the humour or look like a total prat. So far, everyone I've seen has chosen the former. It's a genius way to kindly cut down racist attitudes, if only for a moment.

I've spent quite a while, in what is my distant past now, in and around India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. I lost count of the times I heard the question "more tea vicar?" I was also asked, a few times, as I had worked in London, "did you wear a suit with stripes and a hat? (pinstripe suit & bowler hat). I was being "stereotyped" just for humour and I found it both funny and welcoming.

It is Teaching English as a Foreign Language, and it's teaching English to foreigners but it does not require, or involve the English speaker knowing anything about the foreign languages that the students speak. There will be a host of different nationalities in the class.

I hadn't heard about Catherine Tate teaching ESL, so that's what inspired this sketch, but the character was already established. I think the joke may be lost on anyone who hasn't had the misfortune to work with a Helpful Herbert who eagerly volunteers for everything and makes a complete ****-up of it.

The Chinese lady apparently could not stop laughing during this and they had to film again and again and again. I am English and white and laugh at myself all the time.

The offensive about it is where the comedy lays. That's why you are laughing. We're not laughing at different languages or cultures, we're laughing at the banality of the situation and Tates character acting so over-confident in a situation she obviously can't handle. Comic relief used to be a thing, and we all enjoyed it. It is not mean spirited.
There was some extra material on the dvd's where she said that it was really difficult for her to keep a straight face during this sketch because one of the actors who was supposed to look really angry was cracking up when not on camera.
Without a doubt you HAVE to see Catherine Tate's "Nan" character an extremely offensive swearing old lady and her other characters are awesome too, but would say "Nan" is the most popular. GREAT reaction btw King Boomer. :) Also one of the big UK female comedians is Sarah Millican particularly her "Men vs. Women" skit. :)

You know the best part about this. Most of the shots filmed from behind the foreign representatives had them laughing during the whole thing. Apparently the Chinese part was the hardest to film.
This is one of five "I can do that girl" sketches in the show. This just happens to be the funniest. Others are her being able to play tennis, curling, dance salsa and play the drums. It's amusing watching Americans react to this compared to others, the Spanish, Indian and African one they always hold back their reaction, but the Italian......always gets a belly laugh. Compare that to reaction from other nationalities, or even British where every nationality gets a full laugh - goes to show where countries find humour differently. You ask them something in English,they spread their arms with a puzzled look on their face,we then proceed to say the same thing,but this time,we slow it down and shout each word. Said foreigner walks off bemused. We LOVE to laugh at ourselves.
Years ago I was on a bus in Portsmouth, waiting for the other passengers to get on. A foreign lad, possibly eastern European, got on and spoke hardly any English. He and the driver weren't understanding each other, so an old English bloke gets up and goes to the front of the bus. Then SHOUTS at the lad, "where do you want to go", as though increasing the volume would be the answer. It really was like one of those old comedy sketches.
What is even funnier and self deprecating about this is that we British are so notoriously monolingual.....Catherine Tate is a comedic genius on the level of Ricki Gervaise. We love here!

I remember seeing this skit years ago when it first aired and I've been hooked ever since. Catherine Tate is brilliant and WAY underrated. You should totally check out Sarah Millican if you haven't already. My favorite comedian...super crass and sweary but hilarious!
