But I had no idea of the lasting impression it would have on me throughout my entire life, as I regard musicians and performers. I'm so happy that they used Cab Calloway as inspiration for King Dice for The Cuphead Show. I'm so excited for the show and I screamed when I saw Dice dancing and singing onto the stage in the trailer.
Songfacts®: "Minnie the Moocher" was written by the famous band leader, jazz composer and singer Cabell "Cab" Calloway III, and the jazz music publisher Irving Mills. It was first recorded in 1931 by Cab Calloway and His Orchestra, and became their signature song for the next decade. Beloved by audiences, "Minnie the Moocher" earned Calloway the nickname "The Hi De Hi De Hi Man" based on his unique form of scatting in the song. The song tells the sad story of a "red hot hoochie coocher" girl called Minnie. The hoochie coochie was a style of belly dancing with non-respectable gypsy origins, and was considered lecherous at the time. The licentious Minnie gets involved with a "kokie" conveniently called Smokey, a "kokie" being someone who takes cocaine. Smokey takes her down to Chinatown where he introduces her to opium, which is what Calloway meant when using the jive expression "to kick the gong around" in the lyrics. The rest of the song describes her opium-induced wish-fulfillment fantasy in which the king of Sweden gives her many gifts, including "a diamond car, with the puh-latinum wheels." Calloway doesn't tell us how this story ends, but he does wail "Poor Min! Poor Min" Poo-oor Min" at the end, which may be an indication that Minnie's a goner.
+Tristyn Rohlfing Not conforming to racial stereotypes in order to simply appear on television at all, perhaps? (It's not Calloway's fault the audience at the time was so white........hmm)
Bah. Look up Cab Calloway and watch all his "videos." He wasn't conforming to jack squat. This is how he always acted on stage. He was just being himself.
He's already 50 or 51 here folks, and still on top of his game. Kept right on killing it into his eighties and barely slowed all things considered until very near the end. Rightfully an absolute legend and without doubt one of America's greatest ever entertainers
@@megamiow3325 This footage is from 1958, it even said so in the clip. But he did the record in '31 or '32 IIRC. So he was mid twenties when he did the audio recording and 50ish in the video here.
There's a vid of him performing this in 88, you can tell he's not a young man anymore but all the charm and charisma were there, and even a cheeky moonwalk at the end. Don't make em like that anymore. RIP Cab.
Think of how rare it is that someone is still performing the same song live after almost 30 years and people are loving it, and 90 years later, it's still getting millions of views. This is pre-television and in really the early years of radio. Cab's career began just when radio was becoming a household item.
@@johnking1381 and power. He could still belt at levels that could put most current radio vocalists into a box, even if he had lost some of it by then.

The past really is another country. How do these incredible times, music, styles, ways of talking, fashion, architecture, technology, develop so quickly, and as soon as they have, they're gone. Each decade really is like another world on this earth. So emphereal. Thank goodness we have the ability to record and document some of it, so we may visit it in awe sometimes. Alan Schulte People could still do try this, granted we don't really have a lot of stage to work with, but if you want to you could try, no one's stopping you. If you dislike something change it.
Alan Schulte Thats cool but I understand why. Today we have technology to make the music itself and music videos a show so live performances I guess suffer? If youve been autotuned and had edits and transitions and etc in the song performing live is going to be underwhelming.
Eddie Cole, I understand that there are still performers who do this. But more contemporary "performers" do not. Today you are more likely to see a more contemporary "performer" "singing" about sex or drugs whilst twerking.

Cab was jam-packed with talent and personality! I lived in Elmsford, NY for a while. As I and a friend waited for a bus, Cab passed by (He lived near Elmsford.) I was awestruck and whispered to my friend, "Why, that's Cab Calloway!". He overheard me, smiled, and gave us a casual salute. "Cab Calloway" was a phenomenon of his times at all times 1920's to 1980's. Dance, comedy, risqué words, rhythm, hard work 💪 in an exciting hot yet cool package. 100 years after......."Minnie the moocher" he still draws taps on the screen!!!
It’s very rare to be in simple awe at a person’s raw charisma and talent. Cab Calloway absolutely commands the audience’s attention with his performance and it is something that will never be duplicated again.
This was back when people actually had to have talent in order to make it in the music business. So much has changed since then. I have always loved Cab Calloway.
Before Elvis Presley and Little Richard. Before Screamin' Jay Hawkins and James Brown. Before The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Before Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin. Before Sly & The Family Stone & Parliament-Funkadelic. Before Michael Jackson and Prince. Before the evolution of Rock N' Roll... There was Cab Calloway!!!

In the 1950's my father came home one rainy night, opened his overcoat and pulled out a tiny kitten. We named her Minnie the Moocher.

I'm so happy that they used Cab Calloway as inspiration for King Dice for The Cuphead Show. I'm so excited for the show and I screamed when I saw Dice dancing and singing onto the stage in the trailer.

Songfacts®:
"Minnie the Moocher" was written by the famous band leader, jazz composer and singer Cabell "Cab" Calloway III, and the jazz music publisher Irving Mills.
Fascinating. Thanks!
When does he mention all that
He sings it…

An amazing voice, amazing style, and an amazing, huge, energy-filled smile. Where are all the men like Cab Calloway in today's day and age?

How bout you try and do this?
The past really is another country. How do these incredible times, music, styles, ways of talking, fashion, architecture, technology, develop so quickly, and as soon as they have, they're gone. Each decade really is like another world on this earth. So emphereal. Thank goodness we have the ability to record and document some of it, so we may visit it in awe sometimes. This song is incredible.
Notice how 'big' and expressive all of his movements are. What a performance!

Alan Schulte Thats cool but I understand why. Today we have technology to make the music itself and music videos a show so live performances I guess suffer? If youve been autotuned and had edits and transitions and etc in the song performing live is going to be underwhelming.

No wonder this song is a hit! From the animation in his face to his interaction with the instruments, people were eating this up! I love it!
amazing how a video on how a man reconnects through his favorite music brought us all here. and its great music.
Respect.
Palm a few people yes, not everyone.
2024 and this song carries on! First heard this many moons after Cab recorded it. Saw him singing on Blues Brothers. Brilliant !
I wish Cab Calloway was a drug.

One of the most skillful vocalists of all time - any genre. He had the unique capability of vocalizing a million notes into the space of one beat.
Hello Judith, How are you doing?
Rumor has that King Dice was going to have his battle doing the dances Cab does in this video.
*I m a g i n e.*
OH MY GODDDDD
Cuphead reference 😱😱
Then he would be impossible to beat
It’s a quick bit but King Dice’s hands actually do the thing Cab does a lot (not in this video tho) where he moves his arms in a circle and drops to his knees

Ignore the fact that this is a Tumblr link (it’s not my blog lol), but I’ve never seen anyone else notice this. It has gifs comparing the Cuphead animation and the Cab Calloway move

I am 59, and have listened to his songs as young as age 12. I always thought he was funny, but he sang well, and was perfect at dancing. He was a goofball, but very talented.
Hello Michelle, How are you doing?
Cab Calloway - so multi-talented! Great singer, dancer, songwriter, composer. And I never get enough of watching the Nicholas Brothers dancing to the Cab Calloway band.😊
