My OBT is one of my favorites in my collection, its name is Tobasco, and mine is not chill at all 😆 He/She is finally a juvie and it is time for a rehouse...I have been putting it off for a few months cause I am nervous LOL!!! All the videos I have watched have scared me, thank you so much for this amazing video, you gave me confidence to rehouse my spicy little spider. MUCH LOVE FRIEND!!! 💕

Wow...hi, Brandi!!! I absolutely LOVE the name!!! I do hope that the rehouse goes well for you. Trust me, I totally get stressing about an upcoming rehouse; I've had some that I kept putting off. This might have been one of them, but it was because I really wanted it to go well so that folks could have more confidence when they rehouse theirs. Please let me know how it goes if you get the chance? Sending good vibes for a totally uneventful rehouse for Tabasco. :) Thank you so much!!!

Packing for post, rehousing and pairing for years never had any issue with them but every now and then they can bolt.
That's not to say they wouldn't become defensive but much is how you handle the disturbance you cause them.

I just got a juvenile OBT from a Repticon and it was in a container that had no height and the webbing was attached to the lid. The guy that sold it to me said it would be fine in that for a couple more molts and politely disagreed and explained why I would be rehousing it into a taller enclosure. The house actually went pretty good and the spider didn't threat pose me at all. It's made a beautiful burrow/web tunnels and there is a solid 2 inches between the lid and it's home! I went from no OWs to 3 with this one being my third and I love them to bits. Thank you for your videos. The rehouse technique with the bottles and cardboard gives me the confidence to not be nervous during rehouses.

I am a newer keeper & have 2 OBT: a sling & a juvie. I actually rehoused the juvie by picking up her webbing with her in it, moved it to a bigger enclosure, and pulled the web open with some feeding tongs to encourage her to move in. Took out the old web as soon as she moved out.. They don't seem any more defensive than my other spiders & are incredibly beautiful.

I picked up an OBT sling as my first old world tarantula, currently it's around 3/4". I 100% agree with what you are saying about their rep being partly due to the way they are kept or handled. A lot of the bite reports I read were from people handling the spider.
Give them a way to feel safe and don't mess with them. When doing any kind of maintenance, always be aware of the spider's location, don't look away (or heaven forbid WALK away) from an open enclosure, and when rehousing have all tools and materials handy before beginning, and do it in a location that doesn't allow the spider to immediately be beyond your reach if it bolts.

Hi Tom, I brought an OBT last week. My first old world. She is around 2.5 inches. I put her straight into a 12x12x12 exo terra. She has a skull hide and lots of anchor points for webbing. She has already webbed her hide quite a lot and has started webbing the rest of the enclosure. She seems happy enough. Like you say doesn't like the light though. I'm sure if you give them plenty of places to retreat, and are aware of their capabilities and respect them there shouldn't be too many issues. Thanks for another great video!! Keep them coming! 🤘

    You're just lucky with OBT.
I've seen so many in *immaculate* setups that were just anger made flesh.
The speed that these can shoot up a pair of 9+ inch tongs in unreal, a lot of OBT owners refer to their movement as teleporting.
Still as calm as yours is, I'm glad you're still urging caution, if you get a wet bite from one of these, you'll never forget it for the rest of your life.

I just got 6 slings: 1 T. Vagans, 2 C. Darlingi, 2 O. sp. North Cebu (large (coz there is a dwarf tagged with sp. South Cebu)), and 1 OBT. All are under 1.5 inches.
Of all 5 old world Ts I got, the OBT was the most easiest one to house. From the shipping vial it teleported straight under the moss. No threats and no other bolts.
The other 4 old worlds were either bolty little wannabe escape artists or they attack the paint brush and stubbornly stayed in their shipping vials.
I can't wait to see them all grow up.
Edit: i am more scared of my wannabe arboreal c. Darlingi even if it dug a nice den at the corner of it's enclosure. Lol. Idk why it wants to be an arboreal when the others already dug their own abyss holes.

I got an OBT sling as one of my first Tarantulas, but I did a lot of research and watched UA-cam videos for months before I brought any spiders home. My boy, Orange Julius, went from a one-inch sling to mature male in only 6 months. He has had his hooks for over 9 months, and although he has only eaten a few times since he reached maturity, he is still alive. I love him very much and he has been a very good spider. I have only seen him in a threat posture once, and that was because a cricket startled him. As soon as he realized it was dinner, that was the end of the cricket. I am so happy you made this video. OBTs are awesome in every way. I appreciate your calm approach and I try to behave in the same manner (with varying degrees of success.) Thank you for everything you for this hobby.

By far my favorite species. I have 2 P. Murinus. One is very calm even during rehousing. The other one though, just opening the door of the room, she's full on defense mode, threat pose, tapping. Very bolty too. I keep them in an arboreal setup but i added more substrate for them to dig. I overflow their water dish once a month. My enclosures are a bit bigger than the need so i dont have to rehouse them too often. They grow kinda fast . 3/4"sling to 2.5" in a year.. their personnality change with each molt. My OBT was my second tarantula because I apparently like challenges 😂 Mine is actually really chill and has never given me a threat pose. I have her in a tupperware container with about 7 inches of substrate and she's chosen to dig deep and just web up inside it. I only see her out occasionally and that's just her front half. Definitely going to be getting her an enclosure like this one soon so hopefully I'll see her more often.

I've just had to learn rather quickly from your video as I've very recently just been gifted an OBT as a suprise gift. I've only been in the hobby about 2 months with my lasiodora parahybana who thankfully seems to have an unusually calm nature before I was gifted the OBT.
My dad said to me "you know how you keep snakes and spiders and all those creepy things? well I got you another one" and then produces this glass enclosure covered with web.
I go to take a look and see this bright orange abdomen sticking out of a burrow and I almost froze as I knew exactly what it was but apparently my dad didn't and somehow the pet shop let him buy it without even checking if he knows the dangers old worlds can be.
Seems to have been chosen on the principle of orange one looks the coolest so I'll buy that one. Thanks to your video I'm no longer terrified of when I eventually have to re house it, just regular scared instead. At least that's an improvement I guess.

Ha! That's so awesome! Yeah, most of the people in the pet stores have no idea about tarantulas. I've seen OBTs offered with signs that say, "Great pet!" and "Docile" which could lead to folks trying to handle them. I just posted a video last week where I rehoused 4 of them to show that they aren't that bad. Congrats on getting one!

One of my kigoma slings wouldn’t cooperate when I unpacked it so I left the vial in the deli cup and it ended up webbing it up and making it it’s den which made it even more complicated. Really looking forward to watching them grow into big beautiful spiders.

Hi Tom! I noted if not in this video but maybe a few earlier, that you were moaning about the lack of Crystal clear containers. Check out your local Wally World and look for the new Rubbermaid containers called Brilliant. They lock solid on the sides and it's not too bad with height to ground to width ratios, especially with slings, juveniles, and sub-adults. It's a thick plastic but I have used both a drill or a soddering gun to make holes for how I want the ventilation to be. They also stack well. Other sizes are also available through Amazon. I like the fact that they are extremely sturdy and Crystal clear they almost look like glass. I don't know it you knew about them but thought I'd mention them to you about them. Also, thank you for recommending Steve with Arachnoiden. I bought two T's from him and he was extremely helpful with my order. Considering the time he and I spent emailing back and forth was actually funny since his website was just upgraded and I was having difficulty ordering. I'd find something that didn't work, he'd find out what wasn't working on his end, get it fixed then I'd find another problem. Two day later between him and me it finally worked! He was a great guy to work with and my two new T's will be on their way to me and arrive on Thursday the 18th.
Any whoo, I hope you check out those containers and like them. They are around $8 a piece on average. Again thanks for the reference to Steve.

Great rehousing and nice enclosure! This reminds me that i have to rehouse one of my Pterinochilus kigoma females. Ohh dear! She wont be happy, she gets quite easy irritated!
I have noticed that P murinus kigoma grows much slower than other colormorphs of P murinus i have kept. The OBT have grown pretty quick in general, and i have had a bunch over the years. Very strange indeed! Yes, if given deep sub and lots of hidingplaces and debries, and a little taller cage their should be no problems with eigher attitudes or "ripping off their home" Sure, they are general defenssive but in such a cage they rather retreats. Another tip i can give with this speicies is to keep them in "frontopend" terrariums and place most of the substrate and decore back in the terrarium, because uf the tarantula is a especially heavy webbing creature, it doesnt matter if it weebs part of its home onto the "roof" of the tank, cos u open it in the front. The drawback is that it is harder to work in a front open enclosure. But your terrarium is nice cos you can open it from the top too

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  3 роки тому

Hey, bud! Man, this OBT was one of my slower growing tarantulas. It took quite a while for her to even hit 2". The NCFs I'm raising are growing much more quickly, though. That was definitely a sane re-housing. I share your "sediments" about the OBT's environment is contusive to their attitude. I've witnessed many an OBT that is being poked, prodded, managed and spooked by keepers during the rehousing process. I'd have an attitude as well if I was an OBT.... "No Respect"... I've also witnessed keepers holding their 3-4" OBT's in 4" containers. I call those keepers "Slum Lords"... if I was an OBT in that environment I'd bolt as soon as the lid came off and there was a chance of escape!
I believe that a lot of OBT keepers are just "Reaping what the sow"....
On another note, I just wanted to point out that I've seen a few of your "catch bottle" containers and I think it's a brilliant idea. To take it to the next level, I was thinking for example that for OBT's you should use a "Simply Orange" bottle, for green T's, use the "Simply Lime" bottle and for yellow T's .... well...😁😁

Hi, Gina! Thank you so much! Yeah, the pokies are other spiders that get a bum rap because of the potential for issues. Drives me nuts. I have two H. macs as well, and they've been quite well behaved.

Incredibly informative video, I was wary of purchasing an OBT, but now... I'm thinking that may be my next T. Thanks Tom awesome as always.

All other species: Let's see if she'll give us a little bit of threat posture.
OBT: Let's see if we can get her to stop giving us a threat posture.

Ehhh...I currently have 6, and they are rather shy. I think that the whole "demon spider" thing is overblown or created by folks who don't keep them correctly.

I have a few OBTs and all the hype has me psyched out more so than my pokies. Your videos and podcasts definitely calm me down a bit lol. I'll say tho... the largest one I have is definitely my boltiest T. Everytime we rehouse, it ends up on the floor running around like a mad woman 😂

    2x 2" RCF

I’m new to the hobby but I really appreciate your content and all your videos. Not ready for old worlds yet but my GBB, A seemani and A chalcodes are really amazing and fun to keep. I ordered the keeper cards so I’m fully an arachnerd! Lol. Thanks and keep up the great vids!

Hello, Philip! Thank you so much! And I totally understand; there is never any rush. And, for some people, the risk isn't worth it. And that's awesome on the Keeper Cards! Mine UA-cam "Legends" cards should be coming very soon! haha

These are my absolute favorite. Just recieved two .25 inch slings. Which means, I've now owned nine of these guys.
My attempt with two H. maculata slings in 2012, of the same size, failed and its stuck in my mind like a sliver. So, I'm checking pulses thrice a day.
But, I'm far more experienced with the murinus. Confident it's just jitters.

Great video Tom, great rehouse and a beautiful species. I have a p. murinus and it's true for what you said Tom if you treat them right you have a happier spider.

I agree with you Tom, most people on youtube and facebook, antagonize OBTs too much. I’ve seen some intentionally disturb them to show “aggression”. 🤦🏻

some people love to piss off their p murinus for views and likes. it just leads to misconceptions and hysteria. now there's people that are afraid of these animals because of some goofs on social media.

It's one of my biggest pet peeves. I loathe the channels that don't put the animals first. They're not toys. Thanks so much for getting it!
