My thought was that I could always do a part two down the road.
As with any spider, do your research before you pick one up!
I have a harpactira pulchripes spiderling and I think that they are a stunning species
H Pulcripes, idiothele mira.
@@abibarclay5419 That was one that I originally had on the list (it's one of my all-time favorite species), but I took it off near the end. Part of it was because males aren't blue at all, and the older females tend to loose the blue as they turn more of a cool gray. That said, I was already second guessing that decision while this was uploading. haha
@@TomsBigSpiders I also think that there nice as there not just another brown spiderling and they have blue even as a sling
I'm glad I read this comment. I thought it used to be Oligoxystre and changed to Dolichothele. I was wondering if they'd changed it back. You almost had me busting out with the label maker. XD
Stunning to look at, but not gonna be holding them (even the ones that can be held). They really are beautiful.

Bahahaha. No joke, I made up a common name for a species years ago (the fire hiney), and I just assumed that everyone would know I was trying to be funny. Nope. People started emailing me about getting a "fire hiney" tarantula! I felt terrible! hahaha
Can we all agree when you see a T that rarely comes out you just stop and stare for a good while and lose track of time

Yes, was sitting yesterday when my P.Imirnia went for a walk, mid day, just got out her hide and strolled around her enclosure, shes freshly molted too so was amazed.
Just went and admired her for about 10 minutes or so
Blue, orange, black, red, green or brown, I love em all. My favorite blue t is the GBB and P. Metallica. Great video. Can't wait to gain more experience and knowledge to feel comfortable owning a P. Metallica

Sounds like me, lol! I've been looking into this hobby for years, started last month with my first T, a Greenbottle Blue sling! I'd like to eventually start owning multiple P. Metallicas. (They're my favorite T by... a large margin, I want to keep them / breed them / etc, been reading on it a lot, and i plan to get other Ts beforehand to help me get better at this before committing to even 1 P. Metallica)
Totally agree...I'm starting to really want one. But still a bit worried. I'd never handle one. But would be cool to have a nice glass enclosure. To keep a trantula and watch it thru the glass. :)
I've had both. Had to sell the female Metallica for the $$. NEVER had threat poses from either. And 2 of the nicest on this list.
For beginners, I would recommend to check out the Pterinopelma sazimai. 1) New world tarantula - no strong venom compared to old world tarantulas. 2) She's a calmer one, maybe she will flee, but for my T, she's rarely showing threat poses or kicking hairs. 3) No complex husbandry, tolerates some beginner mistakes 4) Stunning blue colors 5) Good~medium display, you can see her often outside her hide 6) Medium growth rate (faster than most Brachypelma or Grammostola)
Hi, Samuel! Sounds like you have a sweetheart! I've had three, and mine were quite skittish, with the juveniles kicking hairs and bolting around their enclosures and my young adults being VERY defensive and slapping and threat posing at the slightest disturbance. That's why I try to give people a heads up. Thanks for chiming in!

The feet of my secretive Blue Foot Baboon (Idiothele mira) are a breathtaking treat of electric blue. Rare treat to see, but worth it.

Great list! I love blue tarantulas and the C Lividus is by far my favorite that I own. I also think the H Pulchripes should get an honorable mention because their legs are to die for. Hopefully the next few additions will be the chilobracys so electric blue and dyscolus
The C. lividus are awesome; I just don't think most newbies realize that you barely see them! And the H. pulchripes was originally on it, but the males don't have the blue, and the adult females tend to dull out. While I was uploading the video, I turned to Billie and said, "Now that I took it off the list, I'm thinking people are going to be upset." haha Thanks!
You should do some more top 10s for other colours. Orange is my favourite on a tarantula. Great video as always Tom, spent the day cleaning listening to your podcasts too. Great stuff 👍👍👍
Definitely! Orange, green (not as common but also gorgeous), also jet black species (P irminia or G pulchra immediately come to my mind, absolutely stunning bois 😍), maybe also "rainbow" spiders who rock a lithany of colors, like C versi or T seladonia... I'm seeing lots of possibilities here!
It's not a top list. Simply some species worth taking a good look at with lots of blue in their coloration.
I will likely do some videos featuring some tarantulas with other colors, but it wasn't really meant to be a Top 10 list. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and who the heck am I to say which ones are prettier? :) That said, I already plan to do green, as many folks ask about them. Thank you!

Loved it Tom. Loved the choices. I've been seriously looking at Pseudhapalopus sp. Blue and sp. columbia. They're so gorgeous. Didn't like hearing about how small and slow growing they are. I've been waiting for what feels like ages for my H. chilensis to grow. :)
Thank you so much, Alex...that REALLY means a lot. Right before posting this, I told Billie that I expected to get skewered by people who were upset that I didn't include certain species. As for the Psuedhapalopus, I love them, but they DO start super tiny. The sp. colombia actually hurt my eyes when I try to find them. haha. That said, my sp. blues are finally decent sized, and I think it was well worth the wait. And it's funny because I was going to pick of H. chilensis slings a couple years ago, and didn't because of how small and slow growing they are. haha I'm kicking myself now, though.
H chilensis can be sooo slow to grow but mine responded really well to being kept warmer I got it last year in July as a tiny 1cm spiderlet and it moulted in August but then didnt moult again all through Sep, Oct and Nov and for those months it hardly ate and I convinced myself that it was going to die 😢 but at the end of November I got a little cabinet w/ glass doors that I put a heater in and I keep it at 28-29°C for small spiders and ones that room temp is too cool for, and since its lived in there my H chilensis moulted in December, January, February and at the start of this month, 4 moults in the time it didnt do any Aug-Dec last year 😲
So yep Alex if you can keep your new Tarantula Room nice and warm I think your H chilensis will like it and other spiders too ofc 😷

And here it is! I just told Billie that someone was going to yell at me for not including the H. pulchripes. Hahaha Honestly, it came down to the fact that the males don't have the blue, and the older females lose it a bit. My older girl is more gray now.. That said, I struggled with whether or not to include it, and figured that I could always do a part two down the line.

Tom Moran you say the males don’t really have the blue. Mine is an unsexed 2in h pulchripes but the legs are insanely blue! Would this be an indication of female?

I'm listing scientific names, common names, nw, ow, terrestrial, arboreal or fossorial, beginner friendly, not for beginners and side notes like fast, shy, heavy webber, defensive...

I too am enamored with the blue one's, often pointing them out to ppl who think I'm crazy for wanting a spider as a pet! A lot of non spider lovers don't even know any come in these gorgeous colors! Like...how could anyone not love them or be awed by any animal adorned with colors like these??? I really, REALLY wanted Brazilian jewels until I learned how elusive they are. And hard to keep alive. I may still get some one day but for now I definitely want something I'm going to see kinda often. It's already driving me INSANE that I'm not seeing my juvie curly! I really wouldn't want more hiders right now, especially ridiculously expensive one's! But I really enjoy your content and your format. 🤗

All Tarantulas are beautiful but agree the blues are eye catching and pretty. I was waiting to see if you added Harpactira pulchripes to the list. After getting mine, it’s became one of my favorites. As always great video and thanks for sharing.
I took the H. pulchripes off last minute because the males don't have the blue, and the adult females tend to dull out to more gray/black, but I probably should have left it on. Next time... ;) It's one of my all time favs as well!

I've got a Poecilotheria Metallica and a Cyriopagopus Lividus in my collection. One day I'll add a D. Diamantinensis or two, and of course I'll be doing a communal M. Balfouri setup when I've got the space for another big showcase terrarium. Thanks for doing a spotlight on these absolutely stunning Ts, though I think it might have been cool to point out the blue form of the Aphonopelma Seemani since it could be a great beginner option, even if its blues are more muted. Always love your videos, since it's clear how much you love these gorgeous animals.

Great tutorial video Tom. Always enjoy your videos. I still consider myself a beginner even though I've been in the hobby for over a year. Great video Tom! I absolutely adore my Blue Ts. My C. lividus is gorgeous (even though I haven’t seen it in 6 months, haha 🙄), and my P. metallica sling/juvenile is getting more and more beautiful with every molt!

GBB no brainer best for starter. O.Diamentinensis fast and little bit more available but colours pop quite early and are stunning. Good list Tom!

I love the D. diamantinensis! My female has recently been paired in a breeding loan by Deadly Tarantula Girl. I can't wait to see what we get from her!

thank you for helping me out to choose wich tarantula i should give to my friend for her first! i will get her a GBB since they are really beautiful, easy to keep and somewhat laid back. i have a lot if tarantulas and she hold her first one last weekend. it was a versicolor sling. she absolutely adored it! 😊
two days later she called me and said she wanted a tarantula for herself and i have to choose one that is easy to keep. but since versicolors are somewhat hard to raise i did not want to give her one. you know when your first one dies its always a hard and probably a major reason ppl wont continue keeping.
Thank you, M.K. And you are most welcome! Probably a good call on the C. versicolor. Some folks still seem to have a very difficult time with them. :( I DO know of many people who got discouraged and left the hobby after losing one or two spiders.
@@TomsBigSpiders yeah and most versicolour slings in my area are from the same breeder and a lot of them did not make it.
but i changed my mind again since noone has a gbb girl for sale now my friend will get a 6 year old G rosea girl. i cant wait to see her face when she sees her! 😁

Great introduction of the blue tarantula Tom.i do have a p sazami and p matalica, and also the c lividum which I got not long back she was set up terrestrial so had to rehouse her which was not fun due to there very defensive behaviour.for about a week she hid behind a cork bark and webbed herself in to feel safe.then one day I went to changed her water and wow she had made a huge burrow from the bottom straight up to the lid now I dont see het but she is happy. Dispite her being defensive they are a stunning spider.

Tom I accualy just picked up a sling 2nd instar of the H Pulcripes last night and I can't wait for it to grow up and get those beautiful blue legs
That's one of my favorite species. I actually originally had it on the list, but took it off last minute. The males don't have the blue legs, and the females legs are more of a cool gray when they get larger. That said, they are still stunning. I'll include them on the followup!

Tom, I love your content! It's so thorough and specific!! Have you considered making more general knowledge videos about tarantulas that would be less species or genus specific? I would love to see that sort of thing, but maybe it would be boring to produce for you? I would like to hear more about their commonalities and differences more broadly, and about their history. @@TomsBigSpiders I don't really know much about tarantulas in general. I think it would be cool to hear about their relationship to other spiders and other members of the arachnid branch, as well as to arthropods in general. I don't have any specific ideas, largely because I don't really know much about tarantulas. To give you an example of where I am coming from, I watch your videos that are species specific and find them interesting, but maybe long for a video where you compare tarantulas to other spiders perhaps? Maybe a video where you expand on the major differences between old world and new world tarantulas beyond the obvious stronger venom for old world and urticating hairs for new. It may be that there really just aren't enough differences to expound about in a video between old and new worlds. Maybe generalized tarantulas videos would be boring or something? Perhaps generalized videos would result in too many inaccuracies due to the generalization?
I guess what I am saying is that other than sling and newbie guides, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of UA-cam content regarding tarantulas generally. I know that's not necessarily up your alley given that you are deep in the trenches of specific and species-related knowledge, but you are very knowledgeable so it would be awesome to hear your perspective.
P.S. Your podcast is great too. I enjoy hearing your enthusiasm about tarantulas.
i love the C lividus. i have always had these in my collection. My cobalt i have a 6inch pvc pipe angeled in the soil and thats where she stays.

I've had my P. Sazimai for roughly one year, it's moulted a few times but hardly grown! It does dart around allover it's enclosure whenever I lift the lid its crazy! Its only around 1 and 1/2 inches! 🕷️
Mine both went through crazy stages, Dom! Once they hit about 4" or so, they both became very defensive. They seemed to have calmed down, though. :)

I just picked up my first P. metallica, had to leave her at the shop for a few day but when I got back to work she had molted into a beautiful blue baby of 1.25"

Thrixopelma lagunas and Homoeomma sp blue large / 2 are great beginners and around 6 inches. Mine are docile and hardy.

Hello, Aphilia! Thank you so much! Yeah, I'm going to be doing a list of them. Off the top of my head, Phormictopus sp. green/green fumur, P. rufilata, Theriphosinae sp. piura, and some P. cambridgei.
I'm not sure if the blue form of A.seemani should be included in the list though, although there are still other blue ones, I think the list covers the more popular ones. As always thanks for very informative content. It's like most of my knowledge came from you.😁
Hello, Nico! I honestly didn't want to get into explaining that there are possibly three colorations. Plus, there are many poeple out there that believe that the "blue" ones are only blue right after a molt, then turn black. I did give it thought, though!

I feel like you should have added the "beginner friendly" species first then added the more challenging ones after. I am a fan of blue spiders, and also orange ones. I have a few of the "Baboon" species including the "Blue Footed Baboon" (I.Mira). It is a fossorial so some people don't seem as enthused about them, but I adore mine. I got a confirmed female and seeing her blue feet sticking out of the hole on occasion makes me very happy. I do want to get an m. Balfouri communal as a goal later on.
I did purchase a P.metallica sling and it has been my most reclusive of the bunch. It sometimes makes me worry if it is even "alive in there" as it did not eat for a while after getting it and even seemed scared of some prey items. I ended up giving it a couple "pin head" sized crickets for it to eat.
Of course after I said this p.metallica has been out every day since.
Thanks, Roy! I was originally going to put them in order from beginner to advanced, but I wanted to avoid it feeling like it was leading to the "most dangerous" blue T. That said, maybe I should have stuck with the original plan. I love the I. mira as well, and it was on my preliminary list. I just couldn't include them all. My first P. metallica was quite shy as a sling, and I didn't see it much. It's much more bold as an adult.

Hahahahaha. I'm obsessed with the green ones, and I'm finally starting to find a few! As for the bans, I've been working on something about that for a very long time, but it's really like hitting a moving target. The problem is (pokies not inculded), there is no real final answer at the moment. The more I dig, the more apparent it becomes that it's an odd situation because in some instances, it becomes an issue of things technically being illegal, but certain bodies have chosen not to enforce the law. This means that a LOT of species that would technically be illegal have been imported in "legally" over the last couple decades, and it was permitted. For example, when Brazil was was contacted about a certain species, their representative said that NO Brazilian species were EVER legally exported out of the country, which would make the sale and trade of ALL Brazilian species in the US illegal. This obviously caused quite the panic from people new to the hobby, but it was something that was kind of known for years.
When you try to get answers from those who enforce these laws, their answers are often evasive and conflicting. In other instances, one person from a certain agency says one thing, and then another from the same agency says something totally different. In the case of the T. seladonia, there were some seized (even though the importers did everything by the book), and for the time being, they can't be imported and shouldn't be sold. That was the latest I've heard on that. However, some people are taking the approach that, if vendors are continuing to sell the Brazilian species, then it should be okay for them to sell the T. seladonia. Unfortunately, the difference is that the majority of the Brazilian species have been in the hobby for a long time, so it would be quite the task to figure out if any could have been legally exported at some point (or, if some of the species could have come from surrounding countries without those export laws). The T. seladonia is a very new species, and it was very easy to deduce that the original ones were poached from the wild. The powers that be ARE watching, and I really worry about that reflecting poorly on the hobby. That could be the type of thing that could cause them to put the kibosh on all Brazilian species.
I could go on about this forever. as there is just SO MANY nuances to the issue. If there is ever a definitive answer that I can feel comfortable reporting on, I will certainly cover it. At this point, anything I could put together could change in an instant or be construed as "poking the bear."
Awesome footage in the video. I was waiting for the Aphonopelma seemanni the whole time lol. I have all my Ts labeled with scientific and common names and have my Pseud. sp. blue as Colombian bluebottle. Btw did you ever try yours in a semi-arboreal setup? I have mine in one and it spends half the time on the ground and half the time crawling around the top. It even webbed up the leaves I glued to the cork bark.

my litle 2 inch m balfouri is quite active i see it webbing quite frequently, it's got quite the underground network but has kindly built all the tunnels next to the edges of the enclosure so i can see him busying around down there lol
