  • I've posted up a couple videos featuring Xenesthis species, and several folks have asked if they are worth the high price tag. In this video, I rehouse four of my specimens and discuss my thoughts on them so far. Spoiler Alert: I think that they are...

    I always like to have a rehousing video playing while I'm doing a rehousing myself-even if I can't actually watch the screen, the calm commentary helps me stay chill too. This one made me laugh because I was rehousing a cranky Pamphobeteus, and pretty much every time I heard "Stop kicking" in the video, I had just said something similar myself!

    You should get yourself a Xenesthis sp. "Megaseta." lol Heard they're the largest of the Xenesthis genus with females hitting 10+ inches! Maybe even more if conditions are right. Now that's comparable to the size of any Theraphosa genus! Massive Xenesthis species! I've heard they're super rare, with some huge price tags! My friend Patrick with a user name Padraig Sea, and the owner of Wholesale Wildstock on Facebook has a massive female that's close to 10 inches, possibly 9+ leg span! So they're definitely huge! I would love land one myself if I have the right budget someday Lol!

  • @klaskristian1

    They are exeptional! Wait until they are adults! One of favourite NW tarantula genus. I have had X immanis and X intermedia, 10-15 years ago. Back then here in europe they where rather cheap. I remember buying juveniles for 40-50 dollars and adult females for 70- 100 dollars (depending on size) from Germany. I had a bunch of them. Both adults and juveniles. Tried breeding them but not sucessfull. They are nervous, leggy, and extreemly beutiful. A healthy freshly moulted adult Xenestis sp blue female may be the most handsome tarantula speicies known to man?

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  3 роки тому

      They just rose right to the top for me as one of my favorite NW genera. Someone else was just saying that they are super cheap in Germany. I can't even imagine! Yeah, I've had several people tell me that they are very difficult to breed. Hopefully, when the time comes, I'll have some luck.

  • @lucnadeau2821
    @lucnadeau2821 3 роки тому +1

    They certainly have grown since you've acquired them. If I were to put some serious money in a T, I'd only do it if I was buying a sexed female. Then the extra cash is worth it... but I'm still not ready to plunk 325$ for a 2" female immanis. That's still a bit too high. Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  3 роки тому

      It's supply and demand. Plus, we don't do enough breeding to support the hobby in the US, so we end up importing many of ours from overseas. That jacks the prices way up.

      Hi, Charlene! That's awesome...congrats! I kept mine moist as slings and juvies, and I now give them a moist corner and a water dish as sub adults. They like to dig when smaller, so an enclosure that allows for some extra sub is great. They grow SUPER fast when they are slings, so you'll want to give them more room than you would usually give a sling of that size. Don't be surprised if it hits a leggy 4+" in the first year. Mine all hit like trucks when they ate and would often barrel roll with larger prey items. Hope that helps!

      @@TomsBigSpiders Out of sheer coincidence I've just finished your latest episode (I save them to listen to while I'm feeding/cleaning my phasmids) and I've definitely been guilty of giving unsolicited advice, but I always take the approach of not only wanting the best for the animal but also wanting the keeper to be able to enjoy the hobby as much as I do and some rando being an arsehole over care mistakes is not encouraging. OUt of all the communities I've been a part of over the years, I've found invert keepers to be one of the warmest, I think most of us know what we love is a bit nuts and we need to have a bit of a sense of humour about our passion. Great video, Tom! I used to have the same opinion on South American Scolopendra. I REALLY wanted one, but I simply couldn’t afford it. And even when I did have $400+ on hand, I couldn’t justify spending all of it on a single animal....
    But in July of 2020, I had been working all Summer, and I came across someone who was selling some of his breeding stock at a slightly lower price, so I decided to drop $350 on one of his Juvenile Male S. galapagoensis specimens. It was worth every penny....
    So far, I’m pretty sure he’s molted once, and he’s about 7” BL. And he’s almost ALWAYS out. I absolutely love my S. dehaani and S. heros specimens, but they don’t compare to my S. galapagoensis. He’s by far my favorite animal in my collection....
    (And for those wondering, the person I bought it from is Wholesale_Wildstock on Instagram. On Arachnoboards, his name is Comatose. I HIGHLY recommend anyone interested in Ts, Scorpions, or Centipedes to go check him out and see what he’s got available. I’ve done business with him several times, he won’t disappoint you!)

I believe it's aggression was from its former owner providing minimal care. I also bought a crazy curly hair. Neither one seemed to act right. They were an impulse buy I didn't have a clue how to care for them. After much research I did things my way.and used bigger enclosures. They were wrong Tarantulas are not like pet rocks if you give them places to go and things to do. I use a watering dish and also ever 3 weeks or so I make it rain. I have added a metallic pink toe and am looking for more. You mentioned that some of your slings burrowed all the way to the bottom and so, you rehoused them. Do you always have to rehouse them if they dig to the bottom? If there is more room on top, could you add more dirt (when they are not buried in an unknown location)?

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  3 роки тому

      Hi, Gillian! I didn't phrase that correctly. They dug to the bottom and pushed all of the dirt up so there was no real burrow...only a hole. There wasn't enough room for a proper burrow. That's why I gave them more space. Hope that clarifies it.
