Jungle Bioactive Enclosure - Theraphosa apophysis

- It is time to upgrade my Theraphosa apophysis into a bioactive enclosure! The Pinkfoot Goliath Birdeater Tarantula is found in tropical habitats in Venezuela and Brazil, so I wanted to replicate her natural environment as best I could in a Tarantula Cribs large Cuboid Enclosure.

Most of my tarantulas are in bio-active enclosures. A few are kept in natural set-ups while they are younger. Terra Aranea is the best substrate all around. No drainage layer needed!!
The dude has some of the best bioactive products I’ve ever used. These particular tarantula cribs hold moisture for a long time also.
I love bioactive enclosures. They look awesome, but also mirror what's found in nature, so it's more natural for the animals.
Had a bioactive enclosure for my adult redleg that was so successful, i used the excess springtails population to feed my bumblebee dart frogs. Helped me save money on fruit flies and tiny crickets.
That's a great setup and a beautiful Pinkfoot Goliath Birdeater.
We just rehoused our 3" Apophysis yesterday. Went with a large mainstays shoe box, which are wonderful inexpensive and very effective as T enclosures. Ill post a video of the enclosure later. Love Theraphosa !
I have all mine in bio active enclosures too all found in nature, all free and all of my tarantulas are thriving.
This enclosure is a true work of art ❤
Even though I don't keep tarantulas, I just love watching enclosure builds! Especially when they look natural
I don’t keep a drainage layer in my hognose enclosure. He keeps the dirt aerated pretty good. Which I only have one 8”x8” corner that I keep slightly moist for the isopods and springtails. I only spray down the entire enclosure if the humidity dips down below 40% which is pretty rare here in far western Kentucky.
Hey Collective, i really appreciate your videos and i finally got my own Curly Hair Tarantula and shes great. I handle her every now and then and doing so help me turn my fear into fascination ❤ love the vids
Bio active makes it so much easier. Ive been doing everything bio active for like 7 years
Good video!
all five of my tarantulas have grown enough to be upgraded to bioactive enclosures with live plants propagated from my collection, springtails, and moss! they do dry out fast enough that I worry about babying the moss cultures too much and bothering the tarantulas when I do. I'm totally gonna try the sphagnum moss addition and see if it helps with moisture retention!
I dont have one of these per say, but I wanted you to know that you helped me so much before I decided I wanted a tarantula. Ive watched a ton of your videos and today I went to NARBC in Tinley Park IL. I had the Arizona Blonde in mind all day and I swear it was the end of our day and I finally found her! I was over the moon. I was able to get the perfect 'tank' and some decor. Thank you so much for the knowledge to start my own new hobby. I look forward to all your new videos.
I’m just wandering, did you see any velvet spiders I’m looking to get one.
There were so so so many different vendors. Im sure they were there somewhere. I know theres another show at Tinley in the fall I think.
Would like to see a big tank bio active, granted I understand you have many tarantula's so space is an issue. While some of us in the hobby have under ten and give our favorite a twenty gallon wide tank. As always great content will have to check old videos for your lights you prefer.
Hello great video information and rehousing Richard
Awesome video Richard! You rock
I’m about to set up my first ever bioactive enclosure for my future crested gecko (a project I am SO excited about), but maybe when I eventually need ti rehouse my Ts, I’ll do something like this for them, too. I’m getting my GBB tomorrow and I am SUPER stoked to finally have it after all those weather delays.
This is really helpful! Thanks as always, Richard!
Beautiful ❤
Awesome Video 😊
Amazing!!!
So awesome!
Excellent vid
Love this presentation. Very thoughtful and easy to understand. Each of your videos gives me too many ideas
sooo glad to have a biodude code! i am just about to stock up, so thank you! \m/
It almost seems like the clay balls were more of a fad. Everyone was wanting them & now they’re going back to the idea you are doing in todays vid Bioactive Naturalistic 😊
I use a solid sponge layer that way there no need for vinyl net. Just a thought if you have more moisture loving animal.
Great video!
Thanks!
Beautiful enclosure richard.
I have several of my Ts in bio-active setups and setting one up for my H. mac next week. I will never look back, they look natural and maintain the right moisture levels. What more could you wish for by having your own ecosystem :)
Preach it brother
I've always thought about going full bioactive for my Tarantulas, but I'm worried about the heating and lighting affecting them.
Love the content! Your channel helped me a lot over the years (adding more substrate, removing sponges, making more naturalistic enclosures and better husbandry in general). I’ve had an A. Seemani (It’s always very chill, rarely flicks hairs) for roughly 5 years now and I’m considering getting a second one. What do you think makes a good second tarantula?
Nice
I really want to do bio active some day!
Thanks for explaining the step by step with the mosses, i have a couple moisture ddependent species that will really appreciate their next upgrade!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the tip and support!
@@tarantulacollective Are you sure this is not a male Apophysis?... Like it looms quite obviously male from the phenotype, which is more easy to tell for Apophysis than other Theraphosa species.
Thanks for the shoutout!!
Any time!
Love the setup....
As a new keeper I'm told not to leave any prey items in the enclosure while my tarantula is molting because it will either stress the tarantula out or perhaps bit it while molting, so the question is, do the springtails annoy the tarantula during molting...
How often would you water the plants and mist or refill water dish in the enclosure to ensure the moisture level and the proper level of water for plants?
Btw your the best at explaining so much when doing your enclosure builds. It really helps alot!!
Would love a rehousing video for desert species
Check out some of the rehousing videos in this playlist. I have more than a few desert/ arid setups and rehousings: ua-cam.com/play/PLjBrtja7Q8ugIkFWgUMkeZ_z_9kx6VrZ2.html&si=xOsi5VtmEKwaQQUq
❤❤❤❤❤
Could you please give an update on the paludarium that you built for your Caribena Versicolor? I noticed in the video you said you give an update but I can't find one. It was 3 years ago, just curious whether it worked out and is still going strong in that setup?
I get confused about bioactive setups for tarantulas because the plants need light to thrive, but don't tarantulas hate fluorescent lights? What kind of lights can you use that won't stress them out?
I have a zebra knee, could you do a bio active enclosure for one ?
Awesome video!
Can isopods live with the springtails in a Ts enclosure?
It isnt a good idea to put most isopods in tarantula enclosures bc they have been observed munching on tarantulas when they molt. There are some exceptions and it is a topic that discussed in this video: ua-cam.com/video/7ZrxrC4_ApI/v-deo.htmlsi=YE9FNW1QJzqSs3MO
I’ve been using the BioDudes products for over a year now and really enjoy them!
I struggle with picking the proper plant sizes for my enclosures though, they always end up outgrowing the enclosure I put them in.
What size plants did you end up getting from him to fit in this enclosure? And how do you properly maintain the plants so that they don’t over grow in the enclosure?
From where did you get the corck bark
Could you make a vid about heterscodora maculata a please
Why no video on the 12th? Also, lemme get that enclosure!
Richard I heard you were at the Central invert show in London last year! Will you be there again?? Also, have you done any X vs X videos? For people considering one species over another, maybe the most common popular species. For example, I've been considering CV vs GBB.
I was there and made a video about my experiences. I will link below. I was lucky enough to go bc the Invert Show UK invited me and flew me out there for the show. Unfortunately, I can't really afford to fly myself over there yet. ua-cam.com/video/buG99AyINdM/v-deo.htmlsi=ERBopDAyfmM5ijRe
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I know you probably won’t see this, but I’ve been really stressed out about feeders lately. I have an aphonopelma chalcodes male (just got him last Wednesday) and fed him some super worms, but he really seems to dislike them, as he’d bite it, and just leave it and try to keep it as far away from his hide as possible. I’ve also heard that super worms aren’t good primary feeders. He’s about 4 inches right now and I don’t want to feed him crickets as I’ve heard a lot about them carrying parasites. I would like to try Dubai roaches but for some reason I’m weirdly scared of them. I just don’t know what to do. Please help🙏😭
Pro tip yall, bio dude products are incredibly overpriced for what they are compared to most other substrate mixes you can buy or make yourself. If you look at the ingredients it’s really not as scientific or advanced as they advertise. You do not need bioshot to make it bio active lol. Far easier to get a cheaper mix or make your own. Plenty of amazing tutorials on UA-cam.
What do you think of P cancerites? I notice you don't have a video on them
They look cool. I have never owned one. I am more fond of the Phormictopus auratus myself
@@tarantulacollective I got one by mistake. I'm a little scared now that I've looked them up
Hey man, my name is Jasper Gordon I 3-D print things for tarantulas like hides water, bowls, and other things I even do custom orders for people I was wondering if I could maybe send you some free ones
Ehy man, does Tarantula Cribs ship to Europe? Italy specifically
not yet but they are working on it
@@tarantulacollective Cool! thanks! Guess I'll have to make do with a repurposed reptile tank for now then ahahha
@undead9999 he is looking for a Eurpoean distributor, so if you know anyone, let them know.
@@tarantulacollective I'll try and make some inquiries in the next few days, unfortunately here in Italy the hobby isn't that big. They should aim to Germany, or the Czech Republic, there the hobby is bigger.
