- Professional Shops recommend skipping Shorty Header for Long tube headers - let's see what the hp & torque gains are when Shorty Headers are added to the 5.7L V8 Hemi. Why do Shorty Headers get so much hate? The performance gains are there, it doesn't cost much & the installation is simple. If you're interested in having shorty headers installed on your charger or challenger make sure to watch this.

Long tubes for a build - Shortys for a little extra punch over stock! That's my opinion
The only downside to long tubes is cost, long tubes will always work better than shorties no matter the rest of the mods. Ideally equal length properly sized long tubes.
Watching you vlog inside blue is nostalgic lol. Good stuff RT! You one off the realest dudes on!!
Mr. BosSTANG I don't really do it much anymore - the OG's are used to seeing that! Thanks man
R/T Life - R/T squad!!!
I've always tried to make power with short tubes and seem like u get more useable power and it's simple to bolt on
I even threw on a walli world chrome tip on my toyota. Had an evolved mitsubishi park next to me and the cart lot.
Ipurposely park a space plus away from the cart parking space. This guy was dedicated
Your one of the few people that has taken the time and show the incremental increases with each step of the modification process. Very informative. I can remember back months ago that jenetti racing guy talking about the cold air intakes and how dyno shops and manufacturers are testing them with the hood opened and stuff. Very informative! Thanks for the hardwork cause people including myself can go down a rabbit hole.
I really appreciate it. This channel was designed to give people real world documentation & my experiences with certain modifications. Certainly a bumpy but fun road. Glad they're helping some looking into upgrading their rides.
This was a great video bro. You very clearly describe the phased improvements, and it's been a pleasure tagging along through every phase!
Thank you for supporting the channel from the very start - you the man!
Yeah, that's what I really like about the channel, the knowledge you leave with from the build. The do's and don'ts
many have positives & negatives - just here to show the results. Hopefully it helps some people down the road!
@@RTLife I mean it's helped me so you can rest assured you at least helped one person.
The shortys definitely serve a purpose. Just depends on what your looking for.
100% agree - how far down the rabbit hole are you looking to go! That's the question
Like a shorty ram air. Ive been told short rams can make more power? Wonder if its like the bigger tube short tubes for optimal high end
@@RTLife does the shortys as your driving sound better as the car is shifting
@@rstuff1605 .... I mean, if listening has saying, doing this and that, the short tubes, basically not getting the air to pass out enough. But then if I'm right, cause heck drag cars shooting flames from the front so that's definitely short, and all out air exist with flames, lol. But can I just shorty, tune, and setup and exhaust plan that gives me the best air flow exit.
Love how you got proof and numbers on screen I’m subbing
Wow, good explanation and helped me understand via the pictures. Much appreciation
One of the best videos I’ve seen on this topic and totally unbiased that’s the only way to do a great video thanks brother
Agreed they are an easy bolt on and generally 50 state legal. An easy way to pick up 10-15 hp! They are a good choice for some people👍👍 Thanks for sharing 😉
exactly - there is a place for them in modifying. Their ceiling though is so much lower than long tubes
I love my longtubes!!! Had them for a couple months!! POWER!!!
I,ve installed a full srt8 exhaust and headers with a mid delete, cai, catch can, adjustable coil overs with bigger sway bars, front strut brace. A 6.4 inlet manifold and cam in waiting as an every day car i love it.
Sounds like a solid setup you have going
@@RTLife thanks mate being an everyday car and doing 500k,s a week it's what i wanted and vids like yours and forums have helped heaps. Thanks
Thanks for the video. I got the shortys from ARH. Had them heat coated inside and out to drop the temperature 180 degrees. Then I used a larger bottom pulley (because I have a Hellcat) haven't had a chance to put it on the dyno yet. When I spoke with dusterhoff tuning, they said I should see some nice games, with the addition of the Shorties- in conjunction with the Incognito pulley. The fact that I am breaking loose at freeway speeds tells me it did something for sure. Keeping in mind I have 345 track tires that are breaking loose at freeway speeds....
Did thank you so much for posting the numbers man and breaking it down 🙏🙏🙏
I just got my RT it’s a 21’ I want to do long tubes and the 392 manifold but I’m not even sure if I can tune this thing
Shorty headers on a 5.7 R/T for the money will definitely help you squeeze a few ponys when compared to the factory 5.7 manifolds. I think the people who advise against the shorties are referring to 6.4/392 and 6.2 Hellcat/redeye/demon applications because those platforms/drivetrains already come from the factory with a mid length style tubular exhaust manifold / header so a shorty won't improve upon what they already have stock though a long tube header will on those platforms. Alot of times 5.7 hemi guys look for used stock 392 exhaust manifolds to upgrade their 5.7 manifolds without breaking the bank
I like long tubes but that being said there's many reasons to go shorty's lol, this was a great veiw, nicely done bud! A hi to the family. ✌
agreed. I will pass that along, thanks man! Hope all is good on your end
I've always believed that each has it's own advantages that are purpose/situation specific.
You wouldn't use a knife to fight someone 100 yards away, you also wouldn't use a Scottish Claymore (a very long sword) to fight in a narrow hallway.
I agree with you on that
Thank you! I’ve always wanted long tube headers. And i just got BBK ceramic 1-3/4 inch Shorty headers but just for now till i get use to it and save up for the long tube headers! Thanks for the information. Also do you know any decent cams for the RT with 52K miles. Just bought a brand new transmission but eventually will rebuild my engine so i can put a supercharger
Great video straight to the point fabulous
Yes,I had a ram truck 4x4 crew cab.Had BBK shorties on it.Was really impressed,no tune. Acceleration was quicker.also took the loudness away from a muffler delete. But traded it off for a widebody scat pack, over the weekend 😁🙆♂️
Def a difference esp after tuning - glad you saw a big difference
I have a 392 R/T Scatpack that makes 475 lb-ft and 485 HP STOCK. I think people should always compare the amount of money they're willing to spend on adding power to a 5.7L V8 against just getting a bigger engine. A brand new 392 Challenger for me was CAD$50,000 or US$35,000 2 years ago here in Ontario, Canada. They gave me CAD$5K off because it was a 2018 car that had been sitting on the dealer's lot for over a year... You can get great deals on big engine cars at the end of the year! Great video! Thanks for the information!
yah it all depends on how much you can get all this stuff for. In some states getting a 392 is a no brainer over a 5.7 because the gap is around 5k or less. The 392 is a solid starting point for a build
That's why I'm doing shorties for the direct bolt on. The factory logs warp and break the bolts.
Awesome vid.
An idea popped into head. You should make a DVD of all you’re mods. Just the highlights. And just like this video, show all the plus and minuses. Plus throw in some extra stuff like peoples reaction to the power of the beast launching. And you gotta have some family time. Sell the DVD and make a few extra $$. Or it’s a bad idea that popped into my head and scrap it. Lol
Or just use the idea as springboard. There are million ideas yet to be birthed to grow your channel.
I just want you to succeed. You’re a good man. Keep up the good work.
You are the man, thank you for helping & generating some ideas. I do like the 1 big video idea, showing progression - probably can do it as a paid digital download. This channel is like a rollercoaster - grows up & down but at a nice steady pace. I really do appreciate all the help & support!
I'm pretty happy with my shorties. Had em for years. If I go turbo I may use em as the manifold ^_^.
they're not a bad bolt on - just need to have realistic expectations
Kooks Cattless longtube headers and I love it🔥🔥🔥🔥👍🏿
that's a solid setup
I did kooks longtubes on my 2018 Daytona. Few bolts were hard to get to, but didn't need to undo the motor mounts and raise the engine. Took about 6 hours total labor time with 2 people on floor jacks
How do you like them?
@@RTLife Theyre great and sound amazing. Currently running the Hemifever tune but looking to get a solid dyno tune.
Well informed video. Stock 5.7 exhaust system is sooo restricted. I agree with all that you said. Will be long tubes for me
Thanks man - def hope this helps some people down the road. You will enjoy the long tubes!
Some real good information in this video.
Thank you - trying to help set realistic expectations for people modifying their rides
Recent subscriber, really enjoy your channel and attention to detail! Thank you for that. Im coming from an LS background but love the different platform, spice of life. Would you think just going to forced induction, for an r/t platform, would be shortest jump if wanting around 500 whp?
*edit: I bought i 5.7 daytona. Has vented seats! Prevents swamp ass in the summer here in SC!
100% yes. 6-7 lbs of boost & you will be hovering around 500-530whp depending on the tuner & which setup you go with. Thanks man for the support - I really appreciate it.
@@RTLife thanks for the reply! Looking forward to watching your journey. Strokers are sweet! Keep going!
Any recommendations on handling modifications with STP cars?
I have a 05 Hemi, with stock manifold and a dual Y catback flow master super 10. I’m also not tuned. I just want a little more throaty sound and a little more power. I’ve heard about many issues with running longtubes do to the location of the 02 sensor being up stream. In your opinion do you think I could obtain My goal with a tune, cold air intake and shorty headers? I rather not have to replace the full exhaust and also having to deal with the o2 sensors.
I was just watching your old videos about headers xD
yah many people keep seeing the older videos - thought this would be helpful
2 Mustangs, I've done LONG TUBE on 347 stroker motor w/ s/c. 2.5 O/R H pipe 2.5 all the way out (flow 40's)
Put BBK shorties on daily driver 5.0 w/ GT-40 intake 70mm T.B. 2.5" O/R H pipe 2.5 all the way out (Flow 40's). I have to say that your statements are accurate w/ my findings !!
Yeah I was just doing research earlier I’m doing longtubes for sure
that will setup you up much better if you want to keep modifying
Just know that you’ll likely void your warranty.
HEAT LIFER don’t care about the warranty thanks for the heads up
I feel like mid-pipes should have been discussed in this. Were the stock cats on with the shorties? To really compare you should have had hi-flow midpipes/cats with the shorties. This would be a $600+ necessity for long tubes but is a total option for shorties and should be part of the decision process.
Do they lessen the chance of bolts breaking on the cylinder head?
You also had the 6.4 intake manifold as well on that last pull correct?
Im starting over with another challenger 5.7 to build. My plan is try to dyno after each smaller mod. I was tempted to start with a cam, then do a cai then dyno, a throttle body and then dyno again, possibly do the srt headers/manifolds since I already have a set sitting around, then finally long tubes, and then dyno again.
One direction lets us see what these smaller mods add after doing a cam and you can really see what results these smaller mods make that compliment the cam install.
Seems crazy, but thinking of doing the no tune cam available through mmx. Just the cam and gaskets and seals to replace for timing cover. You dont have to remove intake or heads.
They claim 25 to 30hp with the factory tune. No one has done this, dyno, and placed it on you tube yet. I don't believe it though.
Last time, I had my 15 Sublime green Challenger 5.7, I didnt record except one video. After all was done, I had the comp cams HRT Stage 2 cam, Stainless Works long tubes, 6.4 intake manifold, hellcat throttl body, high flow cats, borla atak system 3", Injen Evo cai dry filter system, and after the dyno tune I was able to get 423hp and 401 torque. It was fun building up, but got expensive quick.
So, we will see what happens this time. I dont have the same great job I had last time. I thought about not posting until everything is done, but post them once a week after all is complete.
My 17 Challenger 5.7 goes in this week for a CAI, long tubes, and a dynotune. Can’t wait to see the results.
Let me know how it goes! You should see some nice gains
my guess is 30-35whp range
R/T Life just got it back...370HP and 400 torque. Not too bad for the warm and humid weather we have.
i would do longtube but im doing an 5.3 LS swap into 84 cutlass and no idea if or which model longtubes will fit under there without dragging on the ground or banging on frame/car?
What do you think of the bbk 1 3/4 longtibe headers?
On my stang I have the shorties and wished I went with the longtubes for more power as well on the top end
With the forced air in place you would really see a noticeable difference between the 2
I wonder if the SRT manifolds will work on the trucks?
Great video, I live in the greatest and dumbest state California. Just ordered FM Outlaw cat back and Volant intake for my GF '16 R/T Plus. You just sold me on shorties lol.
Also if you're in the SF/Bay Area, you know individuals with Camaros, tell them to keep an eye on them. Mine was stolen last month and I was the 4th one in my city. Lojack and Onstar didn't help, they enter via driver side keyhole.
people overlook the shorty headers! You will see some nice gains. Those combined with tune, intake & outlaw catback is going to be nice. Damn man, sorry to hear about that.
My car is an ‘13 RT with airaid CAI, BBK 90mm tb, JBA shorty headers with high flow cats and a tune makes 377whp and 393trq.
I'll bet you are glad you kept your shorty headers!!! (somehow in my head there is a "that's what she said" comment that can be used here).
I was very close to throwing them out! Glad I held onto them.
What would you recommend I do for 2k??? I'm thinking jba shorties and cai right now I want to do a cam but the tune worries me qnd changing pcms
Nice to see real numbers, but I'd like to know how the car reacts (Short VS Long tube headers). Have you still same amount of torque in lover RPM's or have you more at peak RPM's?
Check out this link & see the before/after shorty to long tube

Amen to your words of wisdom!
Hope this helps some people down the road - thank you
Dang it!! I was So excited to see a true Shorty to Long Tube but you threw a cam in there in-between. I wonder what a true comparison is from Shorty straight to Long....? Thanks for video though it does help! I have a 2021 Durango RT, Tow N Go and will be throwing a Whipple 3.0 on her - wonder if I should do Long or Shorty. And do you have any drone? This is my daily and drive on interstate sometimes - I do NOT want any drone.
I’m trying to find some 6.2 headers for my 5.7 and I plan on going full 392 or hellcat exhaust do you think it’s worth it im trying to keep my warranty in tact ?
What's up Rt Life, the dynocharts that you showed are both prior to stroking your motor to a 397 correct? These are charts from the original 345 right?
Yes - all of these results are when I had a 5.7L 345 displacement
Just showing some love 🔥🐐🦋
Thanks man
Right now I'm on this track with the shorty headers installed...I just received my Jay Greene package in the mail last week that I saw you order...same size cam as your first one just the Thump version going in the shop tomorrow. I will see how that goes before I keep following your route to the 392 intake if I turn out to be addicted...I will look into the long tubes but that's the line in the sand because I already made my mind up that $7000 for a crate or forced air will be better as a down payment on a used hellcat. Here in Columbus GA there's 10 dealerships with a 100 miles.
it gets crazy once you start modifying - the rabbit hole gets deep & expensive! Let me know how it goes
I been looking in to Nos for about $1000 you can get 150hp . But don’t know the down side to it . I talk to my 2 brothers who have old school mussel cars. They tell me go for a SRT of a hell cat .
@@stevealoia Not a chance! Im modding my daily driver to take on Sports cars on the highway never ever going to a track.. Besides spraying every 400 horsepower turbo V6 BMW or Benz I see on highway would get expensive 😂
Wow I just saw my comment and the irony of it now I've switched to Stainless Works longtubes...my catback is 2.5 Flowmaster American Thunder and now I'm looking at 3 inch options just in case
Great video
Thanks for all this info. I'm looking to intall long tubes headers on my challenger 5.7, but not sure if go for 1 3/4 or 1 7/8 ? Which one you suggest?
Bigger is usually always better. 1 7/8 is better if you're planning on supercharger or stroker down the road
Well said great video
Hopefully this helps some people down the road - Thank you
I have 2014 dodge charger rt awd. Where can I get long tube headers for my car? Bcz I see only for rwd
Guess I'm going long ! Thanks 💪😎
If you're doing a build - long tubes all the way
I'm rebuilding the engine on my ram. Before the valve seats dropped, I was having trouble pulling my camper. I don't want to have to tear into my differentials again to regear them, so I'm giving it a stage 1 nsr cam and shorty headers. We'll see if that gives her the little oomph she needs.
I gotta 20 Challenger R/T looking for a tune. What do you recommend?
Good info! I'm looking to install shorty headers and my mid mufflers are already removed!
You're going to enjoy having that setup esp if you add forced air. Nice bang for the buck
@@RTLife Do you think that the hellcat intake on the hemi 5.7 would have a good to great improvement over the stock air intake?
What’s up my guy , I got the whipple supercharger installed on my 2014 Ram R/T with a electric cutout
Bruh I'm saying I love ur intro cuz u proved what I always said low to.mid end torque is good for ur launch
I have aust genie extractors to the cat, then flowmaster out to the back , cold air intake , sounds great dont feel to much till you put it under load then music to my ears.
Did you have any issues passing inspection NY with the Dynatech long tube headers?
Most of these cars come stock with a good set anyways. But anything is better I guess. But shorties look nice though, I think most guys are talking about price per gains and is it worth it. I live in California so longtubes are not smog legal. So I installed a set of Edelbrock (Mid-Length) Headers on my Hemi Ram I previously had Dynatech Longtubes and took them off. I got busted by the smoggies. So I went with the 50 State legal (Mids). But nothing like the long tubes though.
If I instal long tubes I’ll get a CEL? And a tune can remove that?
Well thank you very much bcs i was considering long tubues just bcs i thoutgh shorties will not do a difference and the long tubes mostly will remove the stock cats which i want to keep
Long tubes all the way if you're going to supercharge or cam. If not Shorties are just fine!
How benefit of long tube headers on 1500 ram 5.7?
Your video has me indecisive now but since my rt looks more like a show car and not a drag car, I might just go shorties headers give it a little punch while looking good.😎
The shorty headers will give you some nice torque bumps esp at lower speeds/rpm. Long tubes are noticeable once you're ripping around on the HWY at higher speeds. All a matter of how far you want to go with upgrades - check out stock SRT headers (exhaust manifolds). They're close to shorty headers & you can get them for much cheaper.
@@RTLife i will take that in consideration thanks and happy New Years to you and your family.🎊🎉🎉
I used shorty's on my 98 Durango with a 318 . I took a 360 throttle body , shaved the lip off and polished it . I used denso double platinum plugs and 0-30 Amsoil . It would get 130 fairly quick and ata sane speed I got 24 MPG , no computer mods , all stock . No pipe mods with the shorty's , just plug and play .
I'm sure you picked up a few ponies in the process of adding those upgrades
Shorty headers with twin turbo and Whipple ok?
To Me modding is like adding whip cream and cherry to ice cream just too add a little something , but real gain is a engine rebuild there is a fine line between Mod & Rebuild
yah the real power is when you crack open that engine & start beefing it up
So my plan was to get a mild cam and hellcat lifters etc plus shorty headers Bc I honestly don’t care about going crazy with horsepower plus this is my only car.. so I need to keep my reliability. 2013 RT, so id be looking at what 350-375 whp??
yes, you will hit (350-375whp) & the RT will drive like stock (just has a ton more power when you step on it).
Thank you for posting the video and sharing. I think you did yourself a dis-service by changing both the tune and the short tubes at the same time and running them together as the next test. You really don't know if the tune was good, or the headers were good...or if both were so-so.
Hey man! Are those numbers before you upgraded your engine? I know you bored it out correct?
All of these setups are with my 5.7L 345 displacement
So, which long tube headers do you recommend to install with the exhaust that you just installed in your car?
I’m planning to do them both at once.
Look into Kooks or American Racing - both are great options. Dynatech does the trick but the other 2 are way more popular for Mopars
R/T Life thank you brother 🙂
Does shorties change sound over stock
If I want a little more low end power and not anything crazy, are shorts a good way to go? I’ve heard about heat issues but not sure
yup - you will pick up low end torque & some WHP up top. It's a big upgrade over the stock manifolds on the 5.7.
I bought my rt last year i wish I would it save a lil more more the 6.2 scat pack if you get a rt eventually you would want to upgraded for a scat pack hellcat I got friends good for a straight line
Nebraska has no emissions testing I've looked it up but does has noise laws
DO YOU STILL HAVE THE SHORTY HEADERS? ARE THEY FOR SALE OR DID YOU SELL?
Any thoughts on long tube headers and which brand rides the highest from the ground ? Just wondering what would be best for clearance while lowering the scat pack with Eibach pro’s.
20-25 with BBK shortys or 30-35 with some long tubes... not really a huge difference. But I’m sure the tune with long tubes it makes a little bit better difference. I went with bbk shortys due to ground clearance
Ground clearance is the main thing for me.
When it comes to headers, it depends on the car. The stock R/T exhaust manifold is one of the worst ever made. Shorty headers will reduce some restriction and allow for better flow. On a Mustang, there is very little gain from adding shorty headers. The factory manifolds are less restrictive. On my car the gain is less than 5 horsepower. On a 392, the mid length headers work fairly well. Although there will be some gain with long tubes, the lobe separation angle (121 degrees) of the cam limits the amount of scavenging. The R/T has a narrower lobe separation angle allowing long tubes to scavenge exhaust gases well. Although they may not add much power in some cars, shortys can be worth installing. For one it will change the exhaust note. The tone will be deeper. The sound alone might make installing shorty headers worth it. If you're looking to enter your car in shows, the shorty headers add a better look than stock manifolds.
I have an RT the shorty headers shit on those suck ass manifolds it’s ridiculous they put those on cars.
Spooky V8 I would’ve done long tubes but I live in California unfortunately, but I do agree long tubes are the way to go and would be a big difference on the 5.7
@@HemivsNinja same I'm just happy shortys are "legal" in california
@@HemivsNinja I'm n California also I'm getting some work done this month with shorty headers high flow cats electric cutouts

Well i live in california. So how could posibly get l9ng tubes for mine if theyre gonna make me take them off for the smog check.
You could also go with SRT exhaust manifolds - many from Cali go down that route because it's OEM.
But he says big gainz small price..? I thought you were referring to people to get the short tube.... I think in of just gettin the short tube headers because Ima never gonna race but then again I hate when im on the express way Ima at like 80 an dont really feel the car go in to fast... So I got some jba long tube tubes.. An 85 mm throttle body... Gonna get a tune soon... Do I really to get a cat exhaust I never feel the difference from them
I think I’m going with shortys. I’m not building a race car just want a little extra
Where did you go for your email tune?
Hope i can break the 400whp, with 392 shorty-full exhaust, cam, ported heads, 6.4l ported intake, afe CAI, 90mm TB, e85 kit. I want to try higher compression pistons but gas pirces are out the roof lol
I chose shorties because I plan on running hellion twin turbos and want them to fit with no issues
that's smart. I'm using my Hooker blackheart shorties with the twin-turbo setup going in.
Hii guys i have 6.8L engine i whant to get long tube heathers where i can't get does for my v10?🤤😳😏😎
So i’ve been watching your channel from the beginning. Also watch racer x and rush shift. Looks like rush shift fell of the map. Any idea what happened?
Someone pointed that out a few weeks back, a handful of channels have gone MIA. I don't want to spread false rumors about them so I don't have any 1st hand info of what's happening behind the scenes.
R/T Life Ok, be careful with the street racing video’s. I have a feeling that’s what’s going on. Remember Paul from family cruising. Stay safe my friend!
So I’m currently about to install a scat pack stage two performance package, I was thinking about goin shorty headers. I’m kinda torn on which way to go, I like to gain some ponies at least closer to the 400’s for sure but at the same time I’m not planning on drag racing my car, just my daily driver. What u recommend ?
I would put long tubes to maximize the results of that new cam package
R/T Life thanks, any recommendations for the long tubes, and the rest of exhaust. ?
great video......
Thank you
I really want long tubes for my new Rebel, but holy crap is that gonna be loud with a Borla Atak. Might be a problem
hahaha - I understand what you mean. That borla setup sounds amazing
You could run a high flow resonator to quiet it down a bit
Good evening what do you think of SOLO HIGH FLOW CATS?
I don't have any experience with them - sorry
What about low end torque? Do long tube headers take away LOW end torque?
Worth it if I’m not going to go crazy on a build? Plan is tune, exhaust, CAI, headers, and if the price is right… 392 Intake manifold.
Also i wanna know if i get carted long tubes will i still pass emissions test in md?
I haven't run into any issues with emissions issues
@@RTLife That's because you don't live in the People's Democratic Republic of California. The only way to pass on long tubes here is large bribes, bluntly applied.
@@RTLife plus its all about tune no matter what you have.
Is it the same for 3rd gen hemi on suv? Or is there a preference between suv and cars?
Same applies
Only thing different might be the intake manifold depending on the year. Not positive.
That is true. Mines a 2006 without cam.
