Hi from Louisiana. I just found your site the other day and have been binge watching ever since. I have owned a pair of Fiskar scissors for over 40 years and they still cut exceptionally well. I do only cut fabric with them and never, never let my kids get their little grubby hands on them. Love your videos.

I received the Guggenheim scissors at my baby shower with the sweetest note about how moms should get a little something special too! Now that my daughter is 8 months old and we are settling in to a routine I cannot wait to get back in my sewing room to try them out!

Well that marketing worked! Just ordered the 9” Guggenhein and the 5” snippy mini ones. My husband actually tried to sharpen my Fiskars and I said “that’s okay, Mrs. Nikki just posted a video so let me see what she recommends” 😂😂 Consider me influenced!

The scissors are the absolute best, just got carried away when I saw the scissors you were talking about, I got them about a year ago, and I must have told every person that did any kind of sewing all about them, best ever Scissors I have ever had, and if you've only had inexpensive scissors you just can't imagine what a joy they can be. And I truly believe that they are safer, just like sharp knives are safer to use in the kitchen.

Easy trick for sharpening cheap scissors -- aluminium foil. Fold it into four or five layers and start cutting it. Be sure to go all the way to the tip of the scissors. Do this several times. It is not a permanent, or even long-term, fix. But, you can re-sharpen many times and save money not having to buy new so often.

I'm 70 now. For my 18th birthday, my dad gave me cutting out scissors, button hole scissors and general purpose. I still have them, the cutting scissors drove me crazy for years. Many ppl sharpen them. I purchased tailor scissors which were way too big in the handle, man size! Then I went to China on vacation and found a place that sold blades. I came home with old school cutting scissors, cost me 3$nz. Best thing . They are just like my grandmas, she was a shirt maker in the 1920 and forever. She only had one pair, ever. Still sewing in her 90s. I have also used a cutter with mat for dressmaking. I like the accuracy, not good on sharpe inward points, though. It a process finding good tools. Your chosen craft will improve with good tools, they are worth the investment,

My first pair of sewing scissors was Fiskar. They have orange handles and I’ve had them for 30+ years. Never have needed to sharpen them. Then when I graduated college my grandma gifted me a pair of Gingher’s. They became my new favorite pair & they came with the Stork scissors. Now I use Olfa (60 & 45 mm) & Clover (28mm) rotary cutters. You should try spring loaded scissors. I have one pair and love them when I need to cut more difficult fabric that I can’t rotary cut. So much easier with my arthritic hands.
I also have 3 mini it’s Sew Emma Stash n Store strips. I have one for each machine and I have a full set of essentials in each one. So yes I have multiple seam rippers & snips.
Love watching your videos. Keep them coming & happy sewing.

I don’t know if you’ve ever tried clover’s seam rippers, but it wouldn’t hurt to grab one and try (Wawak has good prices on notions). Very sharp. But also very thin and small. So it easily slips under and snips even the smallest stitches.

I keep a pair of children's Fiskars scissors next to my sewing machine to clip threads and such. Last nit, I needed to snip 4 layers of cotton fabric away from a seam corner and grabbed the children's Fiskars because they were within reach and my other scissors were not. The kid's scissors cut through the fabric NO PROBLEM! I was amazed!!! These kid's scissors are for the very little ones, having a rounded tip at the end. I had found these several years ago on the WalMart clearance aisle for 99 cents each. I picked up several pairs to keep in my sewing box for thread cutting and such. Didn't realize just how sharp they really were. I highly recommend the kid's Fiskars scissors for roughly $2 if you want a cheap pair of scissors to keep in your sewing box. (I like them better than the full sized Jot scissors from Dollar Tree!)

I remember seeing them around Christmas and I have a good friend who also was gifted a pair of Guggenheins for a sponsored video. I have good, inexpensive Kai's ($20 Amazon) but they don't have metal handles. Also also I didn't realise you could pull the bobbin thread in one go. I've always done that but never cut the needle threads every inch or so. I tend to not rip thru with the little ball side because inevitably I will tear the fabric. Learn something new every day.

I already had all the tools you showed except the ripper. My favorite one is by Clover. I get them in a 3-pack from Amazon for a good price. They aren't lit/lighted but are sharp. I sort of have my doubts about the one from madamsews but hope I'm wrong. I have the large Kai scissors AND the Guggenhein ones. I got the G's when they were first introduced on YT. I think they've re-engineered the padding on the finger holes. The silicone or whatever it is, isn't as substantial as yours especially on the snips. Mine are still in the boxes they came in - lol! I love my Kai scissors and there is a reason they are so $$$$. They cut like buttah!! Oh, and I noticed your new rotary cutter the first time you used it in one of your videos. When you heard somebody talking to you I thought I heard cherubs! 😇😀 We used Fiskars when I was growing up but we were NEVER allowed to use them for anything other than fabric. I think we thought we might die if we used them on any paper or anything questionable! 😂 Those new scissors seem FABULOUS!!! I will look into them! Looking forward to the lighted seam ripper review! Thank you!!! ❤

There is nothing wrong with having Fiskats professionally sharpened or getting the Fiskars sharpener. Besides sharpening scissors is better for the plant since it keeps them out of the landfill.
Fiskars were better 30 years ago. Mine are over 30 years old but made in USA.
Not everyone can afford throw away scissors or has sponsored videos.

Yes, you’re right and Fiskars got the job done for me for many years! I meant that I can replace them cheaper than I could get them sharpened. And I definitely don’t throw them out, I donate them or use them as paper scissors around the house. Hopefully this nicer pair is more sustainable in the long run 👍🏻

I love that Olfa rotary cutter, but it isn’t made for lefties. I use their Splash instead, which can be used rightie or leftie.

Okay, I followed the link and bought some scissors for half price, and maybe I will part with my old Fiskars. Now to find some sharp seam rippers.

I didn’t like the gingher scissors either, they hurt my hand after a few minutes of cutting. My favourite cheaper scissors were from IKEA (they were much better than the Ginghers) but they stopped making them 😢 I have Karen Kay Buckley scissors and they are fabulous and not too expensive either. I have that Olfa rotary cutter I don’t like the ones you have to manually close, it’s comfier too. I love my Sue Daley rotating mat I have the 16” one. I do EPP and it’s great for cutting the fabric shapes.

I have the Fiskars spring loaded scissors that can work with left or right hand and I have had them for oh my god so long so it all depends on which ones you have.
I don’t use anything else by that company and I’m not gonna throw scissors away that are working
I have the Kai true left-handed scissors . I think I waited for sale they were not that horribly expensive
My favorite rotary cutter is a Martelli. However, you do have to train yourself, but now it comes second nature.
But I can see why the brand that you were showing with the auto lock could definitely be an option for some
Also, those titanium blades that you recommended in another video I did buy some I do like them, but I was informed by a professional Blade sharpener that those are not titanium blades. Those are titanium coated blades, big difference, because true titanium blades cost a fortune.

I had the spring loaded ones, but I dropped them once and they went all wonky, lol! (I never throw old scissors away, they just get demoted to paper scissors.)

@@PinCutSew well there ya go😂😂😂😁 can always use more than one pair of paper scissors
I looked up the scissors that you were featuring in the video, but there are more than one. Did you get the professional ones because those are the same price as the Kai. I have a pair, but I need to start making clothes again.

Thanks for the show and tell! My daughter asked me a question about seam rippers that I could not answer, so I thought you might know... what is the other end/side of the seam ripper for - the part that has the red ball on the end? Thanks!!

    • @PinCutSew
      @PinCutSew  5 місяців тому

If you are using it the other way and need to stick it into the seam between layers and rip, do that with the red ball down so that you don’t poke a hole through the fabric! I hope that makes sense.

I’m bought a small rotating cutting mat from madam sew and it’s not great :/ it’s lumpy and bumpy and hard to use my rotary cutter.
