  • Welcome to Addicted to Watches. Today we'll be looking yet again at a watch from Seiko's JDM catalogue which not only ticks a lot of boxes on paper, but also in practice. Few watches so far have given me a feeling like this ones does, but does that mean I'll be getting rid of the rest of my collection and keeping just this one? This is the Seiko SBTM213

I love the title of this video. I'm sick of watch channels calling inexpensive watches, "beginner watches." Too many watch collectors and dealers value your worth based on how much money your watch is worth. It's sickening. An expensive watch is a "flex." You can't make this up. Are we talking about watches, bank accounts, or penis size? What's wrong with having a one watch collection? In fact, we don't even need watches. We all have smartphones. Perhaps my favorite watch for a one watch collection is the most unassuming watch. Watch guys will take a glance and treat you like a plebeian. They are fools. This watch is an absolute technological marvel... the Citizen 0100. It's not cheap but it's not expensive either, especially when compared to the high-end Swiss and German brands. The Citizen 0100 is perfect.

    • @addicted_to_watches
      @addicted_to_watches  3 місяці тому +8

Absolutely. They're just watches after all and finding contentment in a simple one is something more people should aspire to. Price should have no bearing on the enjoyment and appreciation of your watch

Sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder. Your point on terming watches as beginner watches -When channels say beginner watches, they mean those videos for people you're calling "watch guys" - if you enjoy watches and want to collect them, then inexpensive watches are beginner because as the price goes up, you definitely get craftsmanship you pay for. If you only wanted to keep time - you have a smartphone like you said. You called watch guys fools - a true watch guy will not look at your beginner watch and think you're a plebian, as long as it's well crafted and you're getting what you're paying for. I don't have any watches above 300$, but many watch enthusiasts appreciate them all. With the same logic a true watch guy will not consider you highborn just because the watch is expensive. If you buy an expensive fashion watch, a true enthusiast will not respect you. Please don't confuse the spectrum of watch craftsmanship with the spectrum of watch quality. You can have just one watch, watch guys can appreciate inexpensive watches, and cheap watches can be beginner watches - all of this can coexist.

In my opinion the 0100 is not perfect. There are many features to a watch. While I have not seen one in the flesh I have two quibbles. First; legibility. It is good but I have a GS and couple of Casios that have that 'know the time at a glance' factor better than the 0100. Second; the One Tick Per Second feature. It is not a real problem - most of my collection are quartz. But a smooth sweep is better in my view. It can be done - GS Spring Drive is the perfect example. Also, I have a Bulova Precisionist that does 16 tics per second that appears as a smooth sweep.

After several months of searching for my “perfect watch,” I think I found it. And I would also consider this field watch to some extent. Hear me out…
The watch is 39.5mm, has a day, date, sapphire crystal, great luminous hands, 200m water resistance, screw-down crown, titanium bracelet, quick adjustable clasp with a fold over safety clasp, perpetual calendar, and is radio controlled (the radio control only works in Japan, but you can get an app that can sync it. Also, the perpetual calendar works without the radio control feature; I just tested it this past February to see if it would go to the 29th, then change to the 1st, AND IT DID!) and lastly, is an Eco-Drive (solar)!

Finally!! I think I’ve just found my (almost) perfect watch. 😀 Since my Citizen Ana-Digi Temp gave up the ghost after I accidentally left it in a boiling hot car about 6 summers ago. I’ve been wearing a cheapo Casio and looking for my perfect watch.
I was left some money a couple of years ago, so was going to splurge on a Rolex Explorer 36mm or a JLC Reverso. However, I don’t think I can live with an inaccurate mechanical movement and the servicing costs.
To me a watch has to tell the time perfectly and be reliable, so I’ve been looking at radio controlled solar watches from Seiko, Casio and Citizen, but I have a small wrist and hate large watches. Most are 40mm and over, plus have overly busy dials.
36mm is the sweet spot for me, but this is the smallest radio controlled solar watch with a simple design that I’ve seen so far.

I don't understand when someone wants his watch to feel more hefty. It's much better and more effective if it could be as light and as thin as possible, in order to be less intrusive and less strenuous to wear.
This one is good, but I think some Oceanus models are just better, and probably cheaper. Also, there are some Citizen Radio Eco-drives, but their reviews are very rare... So rare, I've never stumbled onto one in a review.
And that's because 99% of watch channels are talking only about crappy mechanical watches. It's like everyone's acting we're living in 1930es, listening old vinyl records, sitting in an armchair, beside the fireplace and sipping some fine Scotch, while thinking why my bloody Ford Model T didn't want to start this morning. :)

    • @addicted_to_watches
      @addicted_to_watches  3 місяці тому +1

For me weight gives it a feeling of quality. If I spend money on a watch I like feeling that I got my money's worth and a solid, slightly heavy object helps with that. Titanium can feel solid, but it won't be weighty. It's not practical to want steel over titanium, just a preference.
I think most people making watch reviews choose watches that will be popular for people to watch, and since mechanical watches are popular, they choose those. I hate to break it to you but I have none of those things unfortunately. No vinyl, no armchair, no fireplace and (unfortunately) no scotch. I like mechanical watches because I think it's pretty amazing how you have all of the small parts working together in something the size of a pebble that keeps track of the time. If you also think about how long ago they were able to manufacture parts so small and precisely, it's even more impressive.
I like quartz watches too and they have their place, but calling mechanical watches "crappy" misses the mark for me. Anyway, enjoy your model t :)

@@addicted_to_watches _weight gives it a feeling of quality_
I knew that. But the part which I don't understand is why would anyone give up to some useless feeling, when logic and facts dictate the opposite. And I'm not talking about some romantic relationship here, but about an inanimate object.
_choose watches that will be popular_
That's what happens when perceived "hi-fashion" dictates the norm. Many of yt reviewers don't even consider that quartz watches are hundreds of times more popular to an average consumer, than any of those extremely overpriced obsolete low quality mechanical bracelets with watch looking brooches.
And btw, compared to quartz, all mechanical watches are nothing but low quality, no matter the materials used for bracelet and outer casing. Because quartz is infinitely better in general... more practical, more efficient and offer more quality by any metric possible... And on average they are still cheaper, which is kinda illogical if you think about it.
_I like mechanical watches because I think it's pretty amazing how you have all of the small parts working_
Sure. That's very interesting, much opposite to quartz watches, which only use and harness a piece of nature and merge it with a portion of human ingenuity, in order to measure time as accurately as possible.
And if I could get a dollar for every time I've heard that mechanical watches have a soul... Watches are actually the only example where I keep hearing that machines, compiled out of cold pieces of metal, have a soul. It's usually the other way around. Which is, ngl, kinda interesting reasoning, from a psychological pov. Very similar to the feeling that heftiness means quality.
_If you also think about how long ago they were able to manufacture parts so small and precisely, it's even more impressive_
That's another kind of analogy, which I was trying to describe when using a Ford Model T and vinyl records. It WAS impressive. But today, it's really not. It's an obsolete piece of technology, and its place is now in museums, or in someone's drawers and attics. Mechanical watches were being a pinnacle of technology some 50-100 years ago. Nowadays they serve no purpose at all. They are impractical, inaccurate, and of very low quality. That's why they are literally just a crap.
Why would anyone use them, and even think they are popular? That has no bearing in reality whatsoever. It's a pure delusion, and I think I've said enough in this post to back up that with facts.
Btw, haven't anyone ever considered that mechanical watches are a scam? A scam, perpetrated by some big brand companies, which use their image and heritage to affect people's opinions into thinking that they are still a pinnacle of production, art and craftsmanship, while they produce most of their components by machines, stamping out metal parts... in mainland China... and selling them for waaaaaaay too much, for what they actually are.

    • @addicted_to_watches

@@damyr Love your passion mate so I'll do my best to reply.
_when facts and logic dictate the opposite_
Well there's your first problem. You're trying to apply those to a hobby/interest that is inherently illogical. I don't think you'll find any watch enthusiast claiming that mechanical watches are more practical or more accurate than a quartz or digital watch but for those people, that is not the point. As you mentioned before, we have smartphones and are surrounded by other devices that give us the time so watches are not necessary to begin with. Following that train of thought, even quartz watches are outdated, obsolete relics. You say it is a useless feeling and not some romantic relationship but for many people that's exactly what it is. People romanticise watches. Are you saying that people can't form relationships with inanimate objects? Classic cars? Other jewellery? Clothes? Isn't that exactly what sentimental value is?
_quartz watches are hundreds of times more popular to an average consumer_
You're right but when I say "Choose watches that will be popular" I'm meaning popular with their audience. The vast majority of those people buying quartz watches en masse are not looking on youtube for reviews, they are just buying them because the have their favourite fashion brand's logo on it or they think it looks cool or expensive. The audience of most of these channels is enthusiasts, and mechanical watches are generally targeting an enthusiast market.
_all mechanical watches are nothing but low quality...quartz is infinitely better in general_
I feel like you're confusing quality for practicality and accuracy here. Quality can come in many forms. A stainless steel Tissot automatic watch with a mix of polished and finely brushed surfaces, solid construction and tight manufacturing tolerances is 100% better QUALITY than a cast resin casio digital watch. The casio is cheaper, lighter, more accurate, more functional and more practical, however, you will have a hard time arguing that the material quality is better.
_more quality by any metric possible_
      See above
__It WAS impressive. But today, it's really not. It's an obsolete piece of technology_
I'd say that's somewhat subjective. Just because it's not impressive to you does not mean that It's not impressive to me. A mechanical chronograph with all the parts moving together clearly attracts the curiosity of many other people too which is why so many have display casebacks. The other thing to consider is why it might be considered impressive. One element is the manufacturing aspect, being the fabrication of such small parts to such a fine and specific degree. The other is the idea, the engineering behind it. Someone, somewhere, a long time ago was able to come up with the shape and design of all of these small pieces of metal which work together to give us an accurate (in the grand scheme of things) reading of the time, and then made it in a size that we can strap to our wrists. I'm no engineer myself but I'd like to see you do that (Then of course I would be appropriately impressed also).
      _and of very low quality_
      See earlier
_That has no bearing in reality whatsoever_
Which part? The impressive nature of them? That is kind of irrelevant. They are very real objects and are more than accurate enough on a daily basis for the vast majority of people. The average person won't lose touch with reality because their watch is off by 20 seconds. I'd argue that 20 difference has no bearing in reality unless they are in a profession which requires to-the-second-accuracy, in which case they wouldn't be using mechanical watches in all likelihood.
      _A scam_
I hate to burst your bubble, but that is pretty much all marketing. Do you think Jordan shoes make you run faster? Jump higher? Shoot better? Brands and companies everywhere use image to affect people's opinions.
_selling them for waaaaaaay too much_
That's just good business 'innit. If you apply that logic to art, it's just paint and canvas which I can go and buy from a craft store for $5, so why should any painting be worth $100 let alone thousands, tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands? Furniture is just wood. Should a table cost no more than the cost of some 2x4s and wood glue? It's not just about the value of the base materials.
All of this is not to say that I don't like or have anything against quartz watches. I clearly have this one myself and others in my collection. I find enjoyment in all watches and there's enough snobbery as it is. Some of your comments seem to exhibit a similar kind of attitude to what you're attributing to people who like mechanical watches, just in the opposite direction. People can like what they like and I'm glad you like quartz watches.

@@addicted_to_watches Well, at least you didn't take it personally. But I think you've misunderstood me about some things, which maybe happened because I did write a pretty long comment, which dulled my points. I'll try to be more concise and focus on one question, if you're willing to answer.
The first thing is that I like watches. And that's obvious enough. But my comment is not filled only with passion for watches, but also with frustration. But that's beside the point, so I'll try to explain that later...
_I feel like you're confusing quality for practicality and accuracy here. Quality can come in many forms. A_ _stainless steel Tissot automatic watch with a mix of polished and finely brushed surfaces, solid_ _construction and tight manufacturing tolerances is 100% better QUALITY than a cast resin casio digital watch_
When I say mechanical watches are a low quality, I meant that specifically in comparison with a quartz counterpart, its exact copy. There are no many examples for a direct comparison, but there's the well known Tissot, as you mentioned it - Tissot PRX.
*Why would anyone buy a mechanical PRX, when we have a quartz version* ?
There's literally no reason for that. And the quartz is also cheaper. Now, I'm not talking about anything else, but a direct comparison in overall quality... which means better accuracy, more durability, better shock resistance, more practicality in handling (less synchronization and no winding up), lighter, thinner and no expensive servicing... (is there anything else?)
      And that's a direct question.
To help you answer it... Imagine any other type of product, with two identically looking versions, but with different levels of tech inside... a car, a mobile phone, a fridge, a TV, or whatever... *Would you ever choose to buy a product which is much better in every way imaginable, but cheaper, or its counterpart which is much worse and less effective in literally every way possible, but still more expensive* ?
Feelings aside, just a direct answer, please.
      -----------------------------------------------------------------------
      Beside the point...
Why I'm frustrated? It's because that quartz watches are not represented enough, not only on youtube, but on the market as well. A decent, well built and tastefully designed quartz watch is extremely hard to find. And on the other side, beside big name brands, we have dozens of microbrands, which produce mechanical watches in 99% of cases. And since I'm always looking for a high quality product, I would never compromise it with a low level quality.
There are Casio, Citizen, even Seiko... but they never make a 10/10. It's always something they miss... materials, design, lume...
Here's one example... Have you ever stumbled upon a pilot watch, of simple type A design, 42+ mm matte black dial, with a domed sapphire crystal, with AR coating, with a good lume, and solar powered? Nah, even an ordinary battery would be ok and I'd be satisfied with a mineral crystal.
I presume you'd think that shouldn't be too hard to find...
There are some Citizen models which are close, but bad lume disqualifies them immediately. There are some Chinese (Ali-express) watches, but they are mostly either too small or they have a mecha-quartz, which is out of the question. And that's about that.
Let me tell you - there's no such watch. Only brands are Laco or Sinn (and maybe a few less known)... and they all produce exclusively mechanical watches.
I mean, it's not that a big of a deal... It's just a crime against humanity.
Remember when I was talking about the scam? I probably missed to say that the most known heritage brands don't produce quartz watches. Why? Because they don't need to. They make a good business with selling horribly overpriced mechanical watches (marketing and business as you say).
But did you know that they did actually produce quartz watches? Even Rolex did. During 1970es, during "the quartz crisis", when many brands had to shut down their businesses. But some of them tried to adapt and survived.
Now, imagine if all big brands started to produce only quartz watches... there would be myriad of models to choose from, all of excellent quality and design. And with competing among themselves, I'm sure they would try to innovate and make some phenomenal super-functional quartz pieces.
Mechanical, on the other side, there's no innovation left there. It's all known and they reached the pinnacle long time ago. There's no much place for cogs and wheels to pack into a case. There are some handmade pieces, with crazy complications, but out of reach for an average consumer.
And that's what I call a crime. Those brands said no to innovation. It's not their own fault, because they have a good sense of marketing, it's our fault... us, customers, who buy that overpriced crap in the first place, and even advertise them for others to buy. What a pity.
      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Btw, we can talk about feelings as well... I like history and vintage things. I like and respect their design, their simplicity and their heritage. I especially like vintage (classic) cars and I also like vintage watches. I possess a heritage in the shape of an old Omega Constellation from 1960es, which is a beautiful piece and it means something to me. But I differentiate true vintage things, which were actually produced in the past, from modern day copies of those vintage things, which are produced in China, by robotic machines... and which are, again, horribly overpriced. That's all.

@@damyr _Why would anyone buy a mechanical PRX, when we have a quartz version ?_
Well I guess it comes back to what I said before, you're trying to apply fact and logic to this situation which is inherently emotional and feelings-based for many of the people making this decision. Whether it is the case for yourself is irrelevant in this situation, you're asking me and the general person in their target market (watch enthusiast) why we would bother with a mechanical movement when quartz is superior. I'd say it's pretty evident that the average consumer in their target market is letting their emotions and relationship with watches influence their decision. So, why would they choose mechanical? I think it's because they find it interesting, perceive more value (and i'd argue that when more work has gone into the manufacture of a watch there is more value, even if that work is by machine), or as you say, they've been conditioned through marketing to believe that it is the pinnacle of production.
What you have to remember is that these are luxury items. When people are spending large amounts of money on luxury goods, they are not interested in practicability, reliability or other logical considerations. That's inherent with luxury. They're not necessary and in this case overcomplicated, antiquated and unnecessary, but that's not the point of them. Watches are more or less men's jewellery when we boil it down to its base. It's an adornment for our wrist to look nice/cool/fancy/take your pick. Viewing them from this perspective, a more complicated, intricate and as a byproduct expensive, object is ultimately achieving its purpose more effectively. When we are surrounded by devices that tell us the time, any watch is unnecessary and just an accessory.
_ It's because that quartz watches are not represented enough_
Sounds like an opening in the market for a new microbrand . You can thank me for the idea by letting me be the first to review your watch ;)
_Have you ever stumbled upon a pilot watch..._
All I can say to that is that brands design and make their models based on what their target market is buying and so will be commercially successful. They would be running the risk of best case a failing product, worst case failing as a business, if they create products that there is no demand for in the market. Microbrands especially seem to be pretty on the ball when it comes to what the enthusiast community wants from a watch, so if such a desire in the market did exist, you'd have to think someone would have done it by now. So to answer why they're not being made...I'd say it's because not enough people want them in quartz but do in automatic. This again comes back to my point above that these target consumers are making emotion-based purchasing decisions.
_But did you know that they did actually produce quartz watches?_
Yes, I am aware of the Oysterquartz models. Continuing along from my point above, if all of these brands did begin producing quartz models one of 3 things would happen. 1. Their luxury brand image would be tarnished by the cheaper products they are now selling. No luxury brand such as those you refer to would want that. 2. No one would buy those watches because there is not enough demand in the market for them (see above). 3. People would buy them if mechanical watch production ceased and they had no alternative, but then I think smaller, independent brands would rise up who were making mechanical watches as that is what enthusiasts want.
_make some phenomenal super-functional quartz pieces_
To be fair, I believe Citizen do this to an extent. They have bulova with their tuning fork technology as well as their pilot/aviation promasters with many many functions (I recall a JOMW video on one of them not too long ago).
      _it's our fault... us, customers_
I can't argue with that one. No one is forcing you, or I or anyone else to buy these.
The whole crux of this comes down to the fact that the people buying these watches are not making logical decisions, they're making emotional ones and as long as this will keep happening, companies will continue to capitalise on this by selling them.
Hopefully this answers your question but to condense it...why would anyone buy a mechanical prx, when we have a quartz version? Because that person likes (or has been conditioned to like) mechanical movements and quality does not factor into their decision-making process. This obviously sits on a spectrum and some people WILL factor it more than others, so they are the people buying the quartz version.

That's a very nice poor man's version of the Citizen Chronomaster with the washi paper dial. That one is not radio-controlled, because it doesn't have to be, at +/-5 seconds per year accuracy.
To be honest, I don't understand why you would say this is your one and done candidate, when you know of the existence of the Citizen Chronomaster watches. :) The latter is vastly superior, and it has the bonus of being an autonomously accurate movement with perpetual calendar, rather than a skint movement that relies on outside signals.

    • @addicted_to_watches
      @addicted_to_watches  2 місяці тому

Yeah there are some definite comparisons to be made with the Chronomaster.
I was saying it has the potential to be a one and done (but not necessarily mine otherwise the channel would be over 🤣). It could be for people who may not be inclined to spend the money on a Chronomaster and just want a good, reliable everyday watch. Or maybe I'm just a Seiko fanboy ;)
This movement does also actually have a perpetual calendar once it's set up, it just requires an initial radio signal (which it will receive since it's jdm) and then it's set. I'm sure there's also a way to set it manually too.

I have the SBTM319. If I did 'tube reviews it would be a rave. Here are my points: (1) The crystal really is that good. It is on a par with my Grand Seiko and Presage. (2) the SBTM319 is a Green Dial. If you look at online pics then that may be a little deceiving. It is a VERY dark green, so depending on the lighting it will mainly look black or dark gray. That was disappointing to me as I wanted a green dial to help round out my collection. (3) The finishing is good - again on a Seiko Presage level. (4) The bracelet may seem pedestrian in design but is so well finished that despite being a 'strap guy' I am leaving it on the bracelet. It is fiddly to remove a link. I typically do this myself but on this occasion I had to take it to a watch shop. $10.00.

Titanium is 4 times more resistant than steel. It also weighs less, so it doesn’t suffer from inertia to the same extent a stainless steel watch would when banging into a door frame. Just say you identify weight/heft with value/quality. You’re not alone in this camp, but let’s be honest titanium is great for watches

I'm pretty sure I just said it's what I prefer, not that it's objectively better to be made of stainless steel. I don't disagree that titanium is great for watches, it's just a preference thing. If you watch some of my other videos covering titanium watches I do say that the feeling of weight is something I personally associate with solidity and quality, it's not something I try to skirt around or avoid mentioning.
