My grandpa said, "Everyone thinks we're rich because our clothes are clean, mended, and ironed, and we shine our shoes." Most classy things don't cost that much.
Grandpa was right. A good shoe maker helps. Have new shoes half soled. I wear the down the outside of the heels, so he adds a small piece there & as it & the sole wear, they are replaced. The “wear” doesn’t ruin the rest of the shoe. If the leather upper is cared for, your shoes will last for years.
A good tip from my mother - during the depression they would replace cheap buttons on shirts or cardigans and replace with better quality buttons- voila !
Yes! I do this a lot with cardigans and blazers, especially if they are plastic or gold-coloured metal. I wear only silver & stainless steel metals and find it annoying that 90% of metal buttons on clothes are gold-coloured! I have a small collection of nice silver/stainless steel buttons which I switch out but I always keep the original buttons so I can replace them when I sell/donate the clothes. Some of my buttons are quite old and I just love them. 😊
Yes! 1 or 2 small “upgrades” like buttons on clothing can change an outfit. Darts in a jacket will give it a tailored & expensive look. These touches are so easy to do yourself.
I love this word - bouloches. As an American, I say the clothes are pilling, but from here out, I will incorporate the word bouloches. That alone makes me feel more expensive!
one more thing, that really helps, is properly fitting your clothes, either do it yourself with simple darts or elasticbands worked in on the inside, or safety pins or professionally at a shop. That can really make a huge difference.
A lot of times tailors have discounts if you bring multiple items, they also have deals sometimes too! There is a seamstress near my house and she usually does a deal on pants. 5 pairs of pants for 30 dollars! She can make them shorter, make them fit tighter, make the waist smaller, and stuff like that. Most tailors are pretty affordable, unless you are getting an entire suit done. If you just want the calves in your pants a bit tighter, that is an easy and quick fix so it shouldn't cost too much. I wear size 4 womens skinny jeans and they are still baggy in my calves so I will be getting them done soon. I have very wide hips and muscular thighs because I work out often, I'm a guy so NOTHING in the mens section fits me, sadly the womens section doesn't fit well at all. My hips are almost 39 inches, my thighs are 21 inches, and my calves are only 13 inches. My calves are muscular, they are just small due to genetics. I'm a very lean guy and I was born with a pear shaped body. These hips never lie.. I just wish they made pants with slim calf options, then they would actually fit me perfectly.
Yes! I’m a sewer and even take in my too-large t-shirts if I love them. What a difference in the way I feel not having them be baggy just because my body is not a “standard” size. The smallest things can make such a difference.
I love natural material. For me, quality means so much. Love vintage luxury handbags and antique fine jewelry. I learned from my aunt, great aunt, and most of all my mother that less is more. I am years old, slim, petite. Classic styles do not fall out of style easily. No fast fashion or polyester for me. Thank you for this video, I have subscribed.
So I dress whatever, and my job allows it too, but I love how practical this is, and it has inspired me to pay a bit more attention. Also... I send it to my sister, who loves looking fine as hell, but is driving my mom crazy over budget issues 😅
It’s called “up scaling”. Take a piece of clothing (a shirt) & tailor it to fit, add better buttons, & you now have a custom shirt. Your sister will have a designer/custom wardrobe.
Hopefully this video leads to the next. Interested in more info about where/when you shop sales, how you identified the websites you use (there are a lot of fakes out there; Amazon is one of the worst for fakes!) and how you buy so clothes fit since fit isn't consistent and sales are final for a lot of these sites.
Love the videos ! Your comments about natural fabrics are so true. They wear better & are easier to maintain. After a while, the color of a polyester blouse becomes dingy, but the colors of natural fabrics stay truer longer.
Your list of tips or guidelines almost exactly agrees with my own! I only wear natural fibers, plus the rayon/viscose family (the “manmade cellulosic fibers”). These fibers are very breathable, which is essential for us older women who overheat easily, and non-irritating, because they’re made of plant fibers, not plastic. I can’t even wear plastics like polyester in blends and plastic footwear, belts or bags are simply unthinkable. With the addition of this one tip to follow below, I think your guidelines will lead to a quality, tasteful and expensive look, low-budget or not. The additional tip is about fit: ignore size numbers/letters except as a starting point for trying on - there is absolutely no consistency in sizing anymore. Don’t wear clothes that are too small, the biggest style mistake I see US women make, or too large, either. Those horizontal creases across the body indicate that a garment is too small, and will only make the wearer look much heavier. I also would avoid Spandex, except in exercise clothes. Spandex makes clothes squeeze and cling, reduces breathability and cheapens the look. I just made the mistake of buying two Ralph Lauren, cotton with Spandex, knit dresses in my usual size medium without trying them on before I cut the tags off. They make my tummy and bust look much bigger than they are because of the squeezing and horizontal creases, I should have gone up at least one size! I checked the label, they have a huge 9% Spandex, yuck, no wonder. Brands love Spandex because it makes fabrics cheaper, but I should have been more careful, even Ralph Lauren has cheapened their fabric quality lately. Now I have relegated these to house dresses, it’s a shame.
Thank you for your kind words! I couldn't agree more with your point about fit! I also buy different sizes depending on how they fall on me. This is great inspiration for a future video on how to dress for different body shapes! I am sorry to hear about your RL experience, I was still under the impression that they were not trying to cut cost... Cutting costs in material quality really is a plague that touches so many brands!
Love your advices! I also live in Oslo. Me, I was a late bloomer comes to stylish wardrobe. After several decades with strange hits and misses - all of them great since I was a darling back in the day. When I turned 40 I started to buy class, simplicity from underwear to all layers. Top quality. Still to this day, there is only some supplements to buy, or fix some things with a tailor.

The one in the video is from Vero Moda (I bought it two years ago) and the places I’d go to to get more of them would be Zara or H&M👌 the old money aesthetic is trending this summer, so these pieces are really easy to find!
Excellent tips...presented directly and streamlined! Keep up the good work:) While I know that navy, beige and black fabrics look more expensive..how about a video on how to wear colors like pink, yellow and green that can look expensive?
I second that. I live in Florida and black is not a great color here. Pink.suits my complexion and all the sunshine. How to style it to look elegant would be helpful.
Je vous découvre et m'abonne. J'adore vos conseils qui font écho dans leur forme et dans leur fond à ce que j'ai toujours entendu venant d'une tante ou d'une grand-mère qui savait ce que voulait dire être "élégante". I always check the thrift stores first. It usually works for me. Sometimes, when it doesn't work for some reason -- hey, I've supported a worthy cause and I've contributed to recycling, which is good for the planet.
Wow, this is the 4th or 5th video of yours I’ve watched so I’m now subscribed. I wish I knew all this years ago but that’s okay. Thank you for much for putting these together. I love them.
I agree. I would love to only have cotton and wool in my wardrobe. In the US it's very difficult to find and extremely expensive to buy all natural fibers.
Hi. Ive seen a few of your video's. Great content. I think you have given us ladies endless tips on looking our best! ❤ you have a great personality that peaks out when you are in the flow of talking. Much love from Marie (UK 🇬🇧) xx
Are second hand stores something common in France? I love “thrifting” in the States and have found great quality pieces for a small fraction of the original price this way.
I just got back from Europe, and although I do think these things were true years ago, I have seen it all this year. I have seen logos on shirts, baseball caps, sports logos, unnatural hair color, and a whole lot of tattoos, even on ladies up in age. Things have changed there. I will say I didnt see so much athleticwear, and older women there are dressed much nicer than the older women here. Most wear dresses and subtle jewelry even to run around. I think it's the new generation that is changing.
What's a good leather replacement for bags, which still maintains the polished look? I don't just mean fake-leather, I mean what other materials work for bags? Thanks! Love your videos (as always ! )
Cotton and linen are beautiful and always look expensive, especially if the fabric is thick, otherwise you can find plant based leather that imitates the grain and mat shine of animal leather ♥
I actually think it’s wrong to comment on ones appearance but I just wanted to let you know you are beautiful🤗 I think the high bun is so flattering on your face as well!
Of all the French fashion or beauty advisors I follow you are just the best!! I love your approach and you look really good but don't act like you are a little princess!! (Though in fact, I get the impression you are from a very good family)...thank you so much! Oh! I have just seen you have the same name as my daughter in law...even better!!
Tu est adorable. Il ya bouloche, et dans mon cas cat hair😂😂😂 la honte lorsque j arrive au bureau et je réalise que mes top sont couvert in cat hair lol
those are the things that nobody taught me before. When I looked back at my wardrobe. Just 50% that I can wear daily and the rest is not so comfy to wear in real. 😢😢
I got my favorite white cotton t several years ago from Uniqlo. It’s tightly woven (I mean knit?) smooth soft supima cotton. Not too thick or stiff, not see/through or too clingy, hangs nicely, has held its shape well. They may have more than one fabric - try one with Supima cotton. Hopefully they haven’t cut corners in fabric quality since then …
Would love to afford natural fibres and go thrift shopping, but from where I’m from, everything is unaffordable and residents wear their clothes until they fall apart, so thrifting isn’t an option either. Would love to see an extreme budget version. ❤
Speaking for myself, I get very enthusiastic about it, but then I'm very unskilled, so I feel discouraged and then it's a long time before I do it again
Lovely content! ❤However, animal friendly products are the winners for vegans like me. No wool, no leather, no animal teeth, no silk, no fur, no feathers. Kind elegance 😊
Compassionate (pleather) products are always beautiful- I’ve got a pair of J Crew pleather white sneakers that are a great core piece - white tennies are big here now - they look great and I can wipe them off. Also, Target pleather is miles away from a NYDJ Marilyn pleather pant - it’s all about a new sensibility. And there’s some very acceptable stuff out there. Otherwise, great video! Thank-you!
My personal favorites: Shoes: Veja (corn leather), Sylvennewyork (apple leather) Bags: Samara, Otto Razz (apple leather) If anyone knows more brands please share them below 😊🙏
Depending on your style, I’ve gotten a lot of complements on my Rothy flats that are made out of recycled plastic bottles! I have two colors of pointes flats and just switch them out
I can barely afford things on sale at H&M! Real leather is completely out of my budget. In my country there are no second hand stores either, no back yards (we have no yards), etc. This video is for people who are upper middle class and want to appear even higher, not for people who live actually on a budget...
Excuse me, but I don't understand why clothes should look expensive? For example, I wear different things, a pretty expensive brand, a little fast fashion and a little vintage. But looking expensive is not a good goal. At least I want to look interesting and you can see it in the silent code of the brand, whether it is from there, you can also see it in the quality of the fabric, how it falls, the quality of the cut and the elaboration of the details. Sorry, but you can also see a piece in neutral colors etc if it's cheap and you can wear a flashy designer piece sometimes. Of course, this doesn't suit every job. Personally, I prefer simplicity, not absolute simplicity. I also prefer items without a logo, or just very discreet ones, but I also have items with a name for leisure time, why not, you have to choose where you wear something like that. It is not possible to look the same with very cheap clothing as with expensive clothing, even with natural materials, because the differences in material and workmanship are too great.
I will NEVER wear real leather regardless of what is in vogue. The animal cruelty is so objectionable! Wear clothes like you have a heart and compassion. Your clothes were "harvested" from a sentient being who wanted to live.
This is not the activism you think it is. Leather can be cruelty free and is way more eco-friendly than synthetic fabrics. Leather last an eternity and good leather will always come from the better treated animals.
If the issue you want to advocate for is the life quality of the animals, advicate for that. Don't let the filthy industrial traditions tarnish the beauty of natural leather
Cows die all the time, to supply meat for food or just because they get old. So do goats and sheep, etc. your comment is not well informed. And don’t come at me for meat, because I’m not a vegan and never will be
I totally disagree with nails, if I wear them long I need scovel shape as my hands are large and thick. Oval or the other recommended shapes look ridiculous on me.
I have wide hands with short, thick fingers. A short squoval (maybe 1-2mm past my finger) gives me some much needed length with enough width to look cohesive with the rest of my hands. Left natural or with a pale polish, they look classy. Nails that are too long, especially if they look like they would get in the way of daily life, look cheap regardless of shape.
Love your videos, but real leather (fur and wool) is so cruel!!! It's their body, not ours... Looking expensive while torturing animals is not elegant and a thing we should never encourage in 2024...
There exists very good plant-based leather! They are a bit more pricey (like the one Veja uses for example), but a great alternative to real leather. Samara is for example a great brand that makes gorgeous-looking handbags from apple leather. Other option: back to natural fibers! Bags in cotton, straw, linen etc... As soon as your plant-based leather looks mat, it will give that expensive-looking vibe :)
@@angeliqueglopez Stick to the cruelty free alternatives. You'll look expensive with cotton, linen or viscose. There are great vegan silk alternatives (from bamboo or soy) that totally look the part ✅
What video would you like to see next?
Really nice video ☺️ you seem so nice thanks for the video 💛
A video about how to choose and wear patterns in an elegant way would be helpful. Also, patterns to avoid.
Thank you for the video! Can you do one of how to dress when you aren’t a standard size please?
My suggestion is: How to wear color and be elegant? 🙂 I'm into color analysis and I like wearing color, but I also like the classic elegant style.

And don’t come at me for meat, because I’m not a vegan and never will be
Leather is actually a by-product of the meat industry, so (unlike real fur) NO COW IS KILLED FOR THEIR LEATHER
Can you recommend afford silk please? Not the synthetic one.
Love your videos, but real leather (fur and wool) is so cruel!!! It's their body, not ours... Looking expensive while torturing animals is not elegant and a thing we should never encourage in 2024...
How can I wear my football team shirt and still look elegant? 😅
I hate the fabric called polyester 🤢🤮 it's ugly
How come you couldn't afford school? I thought your grandparents lived in a chateau?
Because families can be complicated ♥
Vegans can’t wear leather
There exists very good plant-based leather! They are a bit more pricey (like the one Veja uses for example), but a great alternative to real leather. Samara is for example a great brand that makes gorgeous-looking handbags from apple leather.
Other option: back to natural fibers! Bags in cotton, straw, linen etc...
As soon as your plant-based leather looks mat, it will give that expensive-looking vibe :)
We don't wear/use silk or wool either.
@@angeliqueglopez Stick to the cruelty free alternatives. You'll look expensive with cotton, linen or viscose. There are great vegan silk alternatives (from bamboo or soy) that totally look the part ✅
You lost me at leather. I’ve been vegan for 25 years and I have really beautiful vegan leather bags.
The ones I see only last a very short time so it is poison and pollution. I heard there are some made from natural fibres but I have not seen.
That’s plastic which is horrible for the environment.
If people use the entire animals I have nothing but respect for them!
Excellent.
@@MrBrindleStyle I have bags that are 10 years or more. The secret is to care for them and store them properly.
The cost of leather is the suffering of the ANIMALS. No, thank you, I will never wear leather.
