I would like to see a comparison between a M340i and a M340d. Both wagons or both sedans, it does not matter. I know there is a little difference in HP figures between them (34 HP), but an impressive one when it comes to torque (200 Nm). It would be interesting to see how does the torque compare to higher revs and a bit extra HP.

There is no way an M440I is 42k. The M440i models (coupe, Gran coupe and convertible) are made to compete with the S5 (coupe, sport back and convertible) and all are priced over £50k when new.

The m440i gran coupe has the B58 engine, which has a single twin scroll turbo, not twin turbos as stated here. Comparing a BMW M performance model against an Audi RS product doesn't make much sense. M performance competes with Audi "S" models. Full "M" models compete with Audi RS. The relatively close race goes to show how good BMW m-performance models and the b58 engine are.

These cars shouldn’t be pitched against one another. BMW does well against the RS but would like to have seen it up against the S5. Given the difference in weight, the RS should have stopped much quicker than the BMW.

And the Audi doesn’t struggle against a less powerful car, Bmw underrated their power figures and people think that they don’t need as much power to be as quick. In reality they make more power, they aren’t special in any way lol, the cars in the video have the same transmission.
@@PapiAndrey I’d imagine the RS5 probably has a better ZF transmission than the 440i does it not? The M3 also uses an 8 speed ZF like the rest of the BMWs use but it’s a different model that’s built to withstand higher power. ZF makes incredible transmissions.

@@hatergeneral4298 Well this M440i has mild hybrid and if you aren't in the sportiest settings you can't disable START STOP system, those new turbo engines from BMW are also very effective. So I think it would be better, than this RS5 at gas milage. But this is not a point of this video. Especially when these Audis are a bit outdated these days. I am excited to see new RS4/5 that can be better competitor of BMW. Still I am pretty sure RS can't handle any M competitor expect SUV supidities which are just to look stylish and not about driving experience.

The US version M440i would do 12.2-12.3 seconds on the quarter mile. It would also do better on the roll too. It's more powerful than the one in Europe and the UK
As an owner of a B8 S5, i can say that the newer audis dont do it for me. They are like the softest version of what you can buy these days. They look nice but thats about it!
Funny that you say that, Bmw has become soft and numb, they appeal to the luxury market more these days. Drive their cars to the older ones back to back if you can, or back to back with the equivalent Audi or Mercedes. Mercedes is leading in terms of feel and feedback, what Bmw was kinda known for back in the day and they became popular because of it. They’re still sporty, but these days they aren’t as much as a drivers car like they used to be
@@PapiAndrey i would have to agree. I owned a 1992' 318i, 6 speed back in the day before my S5. I also got to drive a e39 M5 that was also stick shift. The steering and handling of an older M car is just unmatched. Not to mention the quality of the interiors. They just felt more authentic, the leather was distinct, engines sounded better too. Its just the sad truth for most brands these days, its all about capturing the casual customer now. I do also agree with you about Merc. They are leading and continue to set (mostly) good examples, but then again they were always sort of in their own level compared to Bimmers and Audis.

And I also agree with what you said about the E39 M5, I know what you’re talking about and I that is one of, if not my favorite sedan of all. Maybe it doesn’t shine in being the quickest or the best handling (as modern hot hatches would rip it apart on paper), but the overall product is something I lust after. What a sport sedan should be!

It shows that M-lite cars are becoming very good cars in terms of performance. Even the M550i is keeping up with the RS6 and that E63s vs M850i vs Tesla Model 3 that they did a few years ago. The M3 and M4 X-drive will destroy that RS5 Sportback.

Hey Matt, I found a trick in my 2016 S4 to bypass the rev limiter. When you put the car in neutral (it may need to be rolling ever so slightly) you can rev it all the way to redline! Idk if it works in newer models, but might be worth playing with next time to get that juicy sound clip. Great video!

Someone's made a boo-boo....or you need a new researcher. You've given the price of a base engine 4 series M-sport Gran Coupe (a 420i) not a M440i. I though when you announced it at £42k THAT'S A BARGAIN... (until I paused the video to check I wasn't mis-hearing it and to glance at the BMW website). I'm sure it's a genuine mistake and there doesn't need to be any more of a price gap between the two cars even with the M440I starting at £56k. Is the RS5 £15k worth more than the M440i? Was expecting the results we witnessed (still a good video though). The Audi software engineers still not quite as good as their BMW counterparts when it comes to coding the gearboxes, with Audi still suffering ponderous downshifts. They're supposed to have improved them with the facelift models (2020/2021?) but considering both manufacturers inherently use the same ZF transmission Audi still have some work to do.
I would like to see RS5 evolution 2011 to todays current modle dragrace. For me it looks like they did not improve that much, compared to BMW and MB. Especially the 450hp which they force to keep for what reason ever. MB and BMW did better from my piont of view, despite I own a RS5.

@@rs3performance515 It looks newer but the performance isn't a great progress. I think it is one important thing to mention. A lot of RS3 and TTRS are turned up to over 1000hp. In the top class both BMW and Audi can easily get up to 1000 hp. We can see the differences in the company by looking at how the car is vs it's potential. The stock RS3 is not anything crazy. The possibilities it have is something crazy. I think that the 5 cylinder engine isn't even fair 🤣 In my opinion audi wants to keep the tradition. All of their engines still sound amazing even they have stuff like rev limiters and shit. It is better then necessary downgrading the engine because it makes to much shit 🙄 I hope that Audi will soon start to bring in the technology from racing to the usual cars. I love crazy stuff like the Q7 V12. They are quite good in le mans still and I do not se any crazy hybrids 🤔 They are now even on dakar and as a first hybrid car they are even winning(some parts of the race) with clear petrol engines. It is quite clear that the thing audi cares the most about is comfort and safety. If they would bring the race technology to the usual cars that will probably be a bit to much for the competition 🤔

All the people in the comments complaining about how Audi uses to be fast and whatever, look at the stats. RS5 literally sits between M4 Competition and 440i. In terms of performance, it doesn't compete directly with either, hence the test. S5 would be slower than 440i in terms of performance. In my opinion Audi looks better than Bugs Bunny, but the Bunny is quick. You also have to look at the companies. Audi doesn't care if you want the RS5 to beat the M4, their direction is Electric, and BMW is pushing all of these stupid powerful 700+HP cars in the future because they know they have to go out with a BANG before they go all electric. Audi is just choosing an approach that's more linear, and that's why it's pushing electric "earlier" than others. Plus Big Brother Porsche won't allow Audi to be faster cause they could easily do it. Heck, this whole time Audi is the underdog since the have non-performance RS cars facing Competition edition BMWs and 63S AMGs. RS6 is heavier, RS5 way less power but, let's give it up to RS3 and S3 for beating their competitors anyway. We just have to get over it. BWM is built to perform, Mercedes to sound and look good, and Audi to be Subtle and Safe. Very inline with how it plays out in real life. Just pick what you like and get over it. All these RS, M and AMG cars are all crazy fast in real life. You really don't need more than 400hp on normal roads as an average driver. And maybe that's why an RS6 with 600hp feels tame and safe at 300kph, because Audi designs for even the average person.

Beemers are powerful and fun (tail out as much as you want), but when you're driving an Audi on a good road quickly, you won't feel the miles - it'll eat up the road and you'll be surprised when you get to your destination without feeling tired, and that's what Audi wants. To give you performance that's accessible, subtle and comfortable. If you work far, the Audi is just the best. As for who's faster, obviously the more powerful car with less drivetrain losses is, that's logical. But in the real world with not so perfect roads and not always drag racing cause we actually have to do important shit, the Audi is just comfortable performance, and that is why I'm a so-called "fanboy". 😎

Stock RS3 clocked 11.98 sec time on 1/4 mile. RS5 did 12.0sec in C63/M4/RS5 race on carwow so basically on par with performance for 20k less.

@@ahemgee9542 of course a tuned C43 will best a stock RS5, a stock C43 is about as quick as a stock B9 S4/S5 (of course I’m talking about the 3.0TFSI, not the TDI).
And the Audi doesn’t struggle against a less powerful car, Bmw underrated their power figures and people think that they don’t need as much power to be as quick. In reality they make more power, they aren’t special in any way lol, the cars in the video have the same transmission.
@@PapiAndrey I’d imagine the RS5 probably has a better ZF transmission than the 440i does it not? The M3 also uses an 8 speed ZF like the rest of the BMWs use but it’s a different model that’s built to withstand higher power. ZF makes incredible transmissions.

If the RS5 were to race an M4 X-drive (which is what it should be competing against), it would've gotten absolutely dusted. If anything, it shows BMW is better.
Mat easily knew the RS5 would lose to the M4 and the S5 would lose to the M440I so they had to race the RS5 to the M440I.

I am excited to see new RS4/5 that can be better competitor of BMW. Still I am pretty sure RS can't handle any M competitor expect SUV supidities which are just to look stylish and not about driving experience.

Funny that you say that, Bmw has become soft and numb, they appeal to the luxury market more these days. Drive their cars to the older ones back to back if you can, or back to back with the equivalent Audi or Mercedes.
Mercedes is leading in terms of feel and feedback, what Bmw was kinda known for back in the day and they became popular because of it.
They’re still sporty, but these days they aren’t as much as a drivers car like they used to be
@@PapiAndrey i would have to agree. I owned a 1992' 318i, 6 speed back in the day before my S5. I also got to drive a e39 M5 that was also stick shift. The steering and handling of an older M car is just unmatched. Not to mention the quality of the interiors. They just felt more authentic, the leather was distinct, engines sounded better too. Its just the sad truth for most brands these days, its all about capturing the casual customer now. I do also agree with you about Merc. They are leading and continue to set (mostly) good examples, but then again they were always sort of in their own level compared to Bimmers and Audis.

It’s hard to be disappointed with either the RS4/RS5, M3/M4, C63, I mean they all have something that some customer values and I think it’ll come down to what the buyer wants. And I also agree with what you said about the E39 M5, I know what you’re talking about and I that is one of, if not my favorite sedan of all. Maybe it doesn’t shine in being the quickest or the best handling (as modern hot hatches would rip it apart on paper), but the overall product is something I lust after. What a sport sedan should be!

It shows that M-lite cars are becoming very good cars in terms of performance. Even the M550i is keeping up with the RS6 and that E63s vs M850i vs Tesla Model 3 that they did a few years ago. The M3 and M4 X-drive will destroy that RS5 Sportback.

Hey Matt, I found a trick in my 2016 S4 to bypass the rev limiter.
When you put the car in neutral (it may need to be rolling ever so slightly) you can rev it all the way to redline!
Idk if it works in newer models, but might be worth playing with next time to get that juicy sound clip.

Someone's made a boo-boo....or you need a new researcher. You've given the price of a base engine 4 series M-sport Gran Coupe (a 420i) not a M440i. I though when you announced it at £42k THAT'S A BARGAIN... (until I paused the video to check I wasn't mis-hearing it and to glance at the BMW website). I'm sure it's a genuine mistake and there doesn't need to be any more of a price gap between the two cars even with the M440I starting at £56k. Is the RS5 £15k worth more than the M440i?
Was expecting the results we witnessed (still a good video though). The Audi software engineers still not quite as good as their BMW counterparts when it comes to coding the gearboxes, with Audi still suffering ponderous downshifts. They're supposed to have improved them with the facelift models (2020/2021?) but considering both manufacturers inherently use the same ZF transmission Audi still have some work to do.

I would like to see RS5 evolution 2011 to todays current modle dragrace. For me it looks like they did not improve that much, compared to BMW and MB. Especially the 450hp which they force to keep for what reason ever. MB and BMW did better from my piont of view, despite I own a RS5.
BMW did start with AWD so sure they did improve. Audi did go form V8 to V6 that can be good and bad.

A lot of RS3 and TTRS are turned up to over 1000hp. In the top class both BMW and Audi can easily get up to 1000 hp.
We can see the differences in the company by looking at how the car is vs it's potential.
The stock RS3 is not anything crazy. The possibilities it have is something crazy. I think that the 5 cylinder engine isn't even fair 🤣
In my opinion audi wants to keep the tradition. All of their engines still sound amazing even they have stuff like rev limiters and shit. It is better then necessary downgrading the engine because it makes to much shit 🙄
I hope that Audi will soon start to bring in the technology from racing to the usual cars. I love crazy stuff like the Q7 V12. They are quite good in le mans still and I do not se any crazy hybrids 🤔

All the people in the comments complaining about how Audi uses to be fast and whatever, look at the stats. RS5 literally sits between M4 Competition and 440i. In terms of performance, it doesn't compete directly with either, hence the test. S5 would be slower than 440i in terms of performance. In my opinion Audi looks better than Bugs Bunny, but the Bunny is quick.
You also have to look at the companies. Audi doesn't care if you want the RS5 to beat the M4, their direction is Electric, and BMW is pushing all of these stupid powerful 700+HP cars in the future because they know they have to go out with a BANG before they go all electric. Audi is just choosing an approach that's more linear, and that's why it's pushing electric "earlier" than others. Plus Big Brother Porsche won't allow Audi to be faster cause they could easily do it. Heck, this whole time Audi is the underdog since the have non-performance RS cars facing Competition edition BMWs and 63S AMGs. RS6 is heavier, RS5 way less power but, let's give it up to RS3 and S3 for beating their competitors anyway.
We just have to get over it. BWM is built to perform, Mercedes to sound and look good, and Audi to be Subtle and Safe.

Just pick what you like and get over it. All these RS, M and AMG cars are all crazy fast in real life. You really don't need more than 400hp on normal roads as an average driver. And maybe that's why an RS6 with 600hp feels tame and safe at 300kph, because Audi designs for even the average person.

Beemers are powerful and fun (tail out as much as you want), but when you're driving an Audi on a good road quickly, you won't feel the miles - it'll eat up the road and you'll be surprised when you get to your destination without feeling tired, and that's what Audi wants. To give you performance that's accessible, subtle and comfortable. If you work far, the Audi is just the best. As for who's faster, obviously the more powerful car with less drivetrain losses is, that's logical. But in the real world with not so perfect roads and not always drag racing cause we actually have to do important shit, the Audi is just comfortable performance, and that is why I'm a so-called "fanboy". 😎

I was just stating the obvious facts. Back then with the previous M4, this RS5 was quicker over the 1/4, correct? So it's just about traction, power to weight, gearbox, drivetrain losses and you can see that translate.

Yea, I don't think so man, check out Joe Achilles video featuring these two cars, the M lost the drag race (but did win on that short little circuit though so props for that).
if i had the new rs5, i would rip out that engine. and put in a N/A nelson racing engine in it. night and day difference. sound 10000% better and way better throttle response
