Easier if u learn to work the system . At Basic I learned to get up before drill sgt. started yelling at everyone and I showered and shaved before everyone so no rush and competition for sink etc. or I did it the night before. At AIT after PT I laid down and waited for everyone else to finish and go to chow, then I got up and cleaned up alone, got dressed and went to chow with no line.

Suh Bro that's just what they do, bit the only thing you'll go to jail for is if you lie about being a terrorist. They wont grill you on that, but if they get you to mess up on something like last drug use, theyll take that as a air to question further

When my recruiter asked me all those questions he thought i was lying hard core! Im 23 and i haven't even gotten pulled over yet. My record is spotless and he told me that they may give me crap at MEPS for that just for fun. I guess its sorta rare to have a clean record for guys wanting to join the Military.

in 2008 at Marine Corps Bootcamp it was large open shower. It was only weird the first time, after that it wasnt a big deal. You had more important things to worry about. You get in, wash, get out. Quickly. Like under 3 minutes, so its not like everyones in there having conversations and comparing sizes.

My experience was slightly different at Ft. Benning. Usually, after PT no one showered and we changed uniforms pretty quickly. There were times when the drill sergeants allowed us a heat dump for 30 minutes which basically allowed us to rinse off. We were allowed to start showers at 20:00 and final formation was at 20:45.

I went to Fort Knox in 98. I was BCT not OSUT, 2/46 Infantry. We had 10 to 12 shower heads in an open room. We would be lined up naked in the latrine. Drill would yell "in". The first 10 or 12 would go in. Then the Drill will yell "Switch", everyone would shift one head down and a new Private would enter. The first 3 in had to finish their shower in the sink. First two weeks every shower, and as punishment later. It was an all male training company, with all male cadre.

When I went through USAF BMT it was just a big open room (8 or 10 shower heads) with no privacy. That being said, I was in the only squadron besides the squadron med hold is in that was in the old buildings. All of the other squadrons were in the new buildings that they call Disney Land. Their showers are individual ones. When I went to med hold the showers were so hot that people would turn all heads on at the same time and turn it into a sauna.

I did Basic Training in Ft. Jackson, S.C. from July thru November of 1971. At the time the barracks where we lived during our physical training were the old WW2 buildings. We had community showers with probably 20 shower heads so yes there were naked guys every where. The newer more modern 3 story brick barracks where we stayed during AIT were much nicer but still had large community showers. The toilet stalls were the only thing with doors on them. I guess things have changed but I honestly don't ever remember any one making a big deal out of it.

What do you advise? One of the reasons I joined the military (due to the fact that certain areas of my life were not moving forward), well the situation has flipped from the moment I joined (I went to bootcamp in January). The opportunity (my dream opportunity and the biggest opportunity I have wanted so far in my life) has literally just occurred. Unfortunately it is specific to my home state (and a city very close to my home city), both of which are on the other side of the country than I am currently in.
This sucks. Really sucks. I kind of wish I could go back and actually ask if things were moving in the background. But I did not. I guess the fact is this: people say that the military is a sacrifice. This is one of many sacrifices I will see while in the military. No matter how much I wish I can go back and change things, or be smarter, or ask the right people the right questions, I cannot. And therefore I must keep moving forward.
Any thoughts? Advise? Agree/disagree? Anything you would like to add/say?
This is really making me miss home right now, but I cannot change my circumstances (or can I?? ;))

In combatives my thumb got hyperextended all the way to my wrist and the drill sgt just made me get back in the circle and keep fighting felt bad. Just be careful and if you do get hurt dont let an instructor bully you into sucking it up if its bad it still gives me issues to this day and I get no compensation because it wasn't reported welcome to the darkside of the military where you have to fight tooth and nail for any type of comp for legitimate things and it's one of those things where when people tell you to do your research it's overlooked and you don't hear about all the possible negatives so do your real research when you join to make sure you get what you are entitled out of it because many leave with next to nothing when they've given a lot. I'm sure Matt can or has done a video about these types of things like paperwork fine print and document everything etc.

That’s way better than when I was in Basic in 2001. We had half-walls and no curtain. Other than that it was the same “hurry, lather, rinse, next” cycle. Just be confident in your own skin and don’t worry about it. Mainly hurry up so you can get some sleep because 05:00 comes quick.

Shoot, I had an open stall shower room with 10 heads. We had to shower in front of the Drill Sergeant for the entire team phase. 10 Soldiers at a time, and the rest of the Soldiers lined up behind a head facing the opposite way. Each Soldier got 15 seconds to shower (Shower drills in red phase.). It wasn't until Gold Phase (OSUT Basic and AIT.) that we got good long 5 minute showers... But then again, this was in 2006. Also, any drug test, the urinalysis proctor watches from the front. Gotta get over the fear boys. We all have a package, and just remember, you're so stressed and tired, you don't have time to be self conscious.

Wow, maybe things have changed. In Air Force basic in 2006, there was one big shower. We all showered together, usually 3 girls to a shower head. We had no choice but to get naked in front of each other. We just looked up at the ceiling and not at each other, lol. I am very modest so I hated this, lol. We only had a few minutes. I heard that a few years ago the Air Force built new dorms so maybe they have curtains now in basic. Hopefully!

This is just weird to me.
What accounts for all the shyness in the last 20-30 odd years?
Of course getting out of high school and my basic training was in the late 70s.
Prior to that in high school and Junior High if you came in from PE and the coach saw that you did NOT take a shower you got dinged for that. And the shower was just a big open bay with multiple shower heads along the walls.
You just got in there with bunch of other naked dudes, showered up and got dressed.
I was really shocked to learn many years later when dating a single mom who had a kid in high-school that they didn't even make them take showers anymore.
In my youth I was in Naval Cadet Corps, so we went to Marine and Navy installations back in the 70s for field trips and summer camp and that was the same thing. The showers in the barracks were just a big open bays with multiple shower heads on the wall.
Same when I got to Air Force basic and same when I got to my first duty station in England.
Then I joined the guard up through the first Gulf War.
And I just don't ever recall being on a base where there individual shower stalls.
So when did this all come about?

Ft. Jackson had open bay showers when I went in 1988. Sometimes the water was hot, sometimes cold but it depended on how fast you could get in there before anyone else. In A.I.T., at Ft. Lee, we had same kind of showers but the water came out as ice cubes for the most part because three buildings (3 different Companies) shared the same hot water heater, it sucked.
