I’m an ole guy. I went through Navy boot camp in the early 70s. We were only allowed to use Zest soap because it would not leave a soap residue on the shower area tile walls. Funny how you remember things like that.
I remember seeing this video and reading the comments months ago about people leaving in days and getting jealous of them, I leave in hours and I'm like bruuuuuhhhh
A couple of things to add to your list. Pipe cleaners, a shaving brush, an old cotton T-shirt,/cloth and Q-tips. You WILL need these to do weapon maintenance. The brush is great for getting dust out of all of those crevices. A baggie of cleaning patches would also be good. Those were always in short supply when I went throgh basic and AIT. A small flashlight to check the bore would be good too. You are lucky you don't have to spit shne your boots anymore. We also had to get Brasso to shine our insignia and buckles.
Here's some watch options for you guys. They're all under or around $20 (Some of them around $15), they're durable, water resistant and reliable: Casio MRW 200 Casio HDA 600 Casio FT500 or other Forester models (they've got all blacks too) And the digitals: Casio F91w Casio F105 Casio AE1000 and 1200 and so on Also you could go for more durable G-Shocks but they are higher in price

Paper work is important, but I also have a list to make it alot easier. 2 sets of tooth brushes, tooth brush case, deodorants, comb, razer and anything that will be inspected. Most of it, you can buy at Dollarama. This way, you can keep one as a deplay and one you'll be using. It'll save you time in the morning. Also, VERY important!!! Do not cheap out on a good pair of fitness shoes! You'll be working out practically daily. Actually go to a shoe store and not a Walmart. You can buy stamps at the PX. You can buy a Timex at the PX. You dont need a phone charger and they cost like 3 bucks. Leave the gillette super glide at home and you can get arm and hammer deodorant at the PX. ID and social security card is all you need
I still agree with whole list. PX time can be limited or be out of stock for items. A better quality razor may mean fewer strokes needed or accidental cuts due to daily shaving requirements for males and limited hygiene time.
Sand hill apparently has different requirements than where ever the hell he went lol a watch sure it will look real nice with your cell phone in you're bag locked in a closet till you leave osut 👍 but i went in 2004 so what do i know. And razors, deodorant and shaving cream made us trash all of it at 30th ag then took us to that little fake px next to 30th and buy it all over again and $120 new balance pt shoes lol.

Hey thanks a lot brother. I'm going through MEPS on the 20th and I'm really confident about passing, especially DLAB. Gonna go 35M. Your vids help quite a bit and encouraged me to get extra help from my recruiter, my main focus right now is pt, and how i act, to make sure basic goes a just a little easier. Kinda worried about security clearance though, how do i make sure i get that?
Your videos have really been helping me understand more and get clarity because I'm supposed to be going in soon so i just want to say thanks and continue to make them so someone else further down the line could understand 💯
(14 years ago) We were able to buy stamps... I think the arm at the px. But i brought some with me. We didn't do the shop until half a week in (if I remember right it was when we were getting our uniforms. Around that time. But before first PT test). The list for the airforce says they'll give you stamps but I don't know for sure. I took a watch. So glad i did. I didn't own a cell phone in 2005. Took a phone card (took two minutes to connect usually and left with maybe 3 minutes to talk. *That* was fun. ) Don't bring food. Don't bring cigs/vape ((if you're joining. Quit smoking/vaping. There was no smoking in bmt (vape didn't exist). Might want an address book. Or at least an index card or something with addresses. I brought too much with me. If I left today I would take: Two plain shirts...maybe three but that would include the one I would be wearing (like the undershirs men can buy) Bras (female obvs) five maybe seven. Underwear. Regular. Cotton nothing special. Again five maybe seven. Female items (tampons/pads - honestly id hope to get birth control to regulate. Don't bring the cup. It will be too difficult. ) Small/travel sized shampoo and deodorant. Body wash **not bar soap** (You *might* be able to get a decoy for your wall locker later.) Socks. Snickers (wearing) ((though now you're fitted with your own 'better' shoes now)) I was told to buy flip flops (shower shoes) but then we bought some at the px as well. Watch (wearing) Phone with charger. Razors. Honestly for females id go cheap. Males may need a bit more. Paperwork of course. Later we bought folders , a binder, highlighters, paper, pens, and things like that. Get a very small duffle bag .... You will have to carry this a lot when you first get there. (Had a lot of pick it up put it down).
I HIGHLY recommend for the watches to get the g shock brand they are really good and decently cheap for how good they are they a waterproof up to 45bars and a shock resistant are l.e.d they last FOREVER when I bought mine first one I didn’t have to change the battery for 3 years and 8 months and they are mud proof they are made of a material that doesn’t get sticky and and can be set to military time (if ur like me u use it on EVERYTHING) and have timers stopwatches alarms and and durable as hell the only bad side are they a pretty tricky to learn how to change the battery
Any valuables you have, especially if they are small, I would suggest that you open a safe deposit box at a bank to store those items. Do not bring those to boot camp. Rings, watches, jewelry, money, gold, silver, special momento items, Organizational trinkets, etc. I had mistakenly brought a Boy Scout wallet utility knife that was tucked into my wallet for a few years...only to have it confiscated and lost.
I know this is Army but Little update for West Coast USMC at least you can buy stamps you are not able to have watches this is from early 2018 information at least also you can’t use your phone at all you are not able to bring razors in at all you have to buy them from px all person hygiene is provided day 1 also we didn’t use a single social security card or birth certificate
if you join before school the gi bill will pay for you're school for 3 years and pay you E5 pay while in school and if you move to texas they will pay for you're school for ever if it's a texas state school for being a vet.
as far as what you said, everything is good to have/bring. you forgot money. cash. yes in bootcamp you will get an ATM card but sometimes you at least i did we had an oppertunity to buy a sunday newspaper outside of the chowhall. they didnt take credit. most everything else you get issued basic stuff the first night and later store trips allows you to buy more stuff
One of the good things about Marine basic is you don't bring anything to basic, except for yourself and the clothes on your back. You are stripped down and relieved of all your possessions when you arrive, and won't see any of them again until you graduate. By that time, none of your clothes will likely fit anyway. Don't worry about a wristwatch as you won't be allowed to possess one until you graduate.
When I went to basic they gave us a packing list. Then they made us buy everything on it as soon as we got there. For watches, go with a G Shock. I had a timex fall apart.

can you bring an electric razor to basic training? I haven't shaved in 2 years because I get nasty ingrown hairs and I could probably get a waiver but what about basic?
Buy Dorco, they are the same ones as Dollar Shave Club but less expensive. You can even purchase the handles. I just bought my husband a years supply for $38.
@MilitaryBronyforlife it's a Garmin Fenix 5X Plus Sapphire so I'm thinking I won't be allowed it. Thanks for the reply, I will probably just get a cheap one off Amazon for Basic.
I do not know in the American army but in the army that I was The most important thing not to forget is to put the motivation under the pillow At home he should not break until you come home
Bringing a watch is very differant to the Marine Corps when I was there 20 years ago. back then (might have changed since), you were not allowed to wear a watch at all (my basic cheap watch I brought was taken from me and anyone else that had a watch on the first day of reception). Later and people in special platoons like the PEB platoons were allowed to wear watches, I think it might be an earned privilage thing in MCRD. To this day I wish I had joined the Army instead.

Actually found some info on a comment below, I'm pretty sure I was worrying for no good reason.
Your videos have really been helping me understand more and get clarity because I'm supposed to be going in soon so i just want to say thanks and continue to make them so someone else further down the line could understand 💯
Hey Matt your vids have helped me prepare for basic cause I’m gonna join the Army after high school
I showed up to basic just with the clothes I was wearing since I was told they would supply me with everything.
Matt my son leaving for fort Benning in 7 days . Your vids are so informative. I was just gonna go buy him a book of stamps today .
We were able to buy stamps...
*That* was fun. )
Don't bring food. Don't bring cigs/vape ((if you're joining. Quit smoking/vaping. There was no smoking in bmt (vape didn't exist).
Might want an address book. Or at least an index card or something with addresses.
I brought too much with me.
If I left today I would take:
Two plain shirts...maybe three but that would include the one I would be wearing (like the undershirs men can buy)
Bras (female obvs) five maybe seven.
Underwear. Regular. Cotton nothing special. Again five maybe seven.
Female items (tampons/pads - honestly id hope to get birth control to regulate. Don't bring the cup. It will be too difficult. )
Small/travel sized shampoo and deodorant. Body wash **not bar soap** (You *might* be able to get a decoy for your wall locker later.)
Socks. Snickers (wearing) ((though now you're fitted with your own 'better' shoes now))
I was told to buy flip flops (shower shoes) but then we bought some at the px as well.
Watch (wearing)
Phone with charger.
Bro this guy makes informative yet BORIN vids
Total packing list video would be helpful !!!
Leaving tomorrow your videos answered almost all of my questions thanks.
just make dollar shave club mail you some razors Im sure the DIs wont mind
Not at all
Or just spend 10 bucks and buy a set of blades
Can you bring electronic razors
Attack Helicopter no
I can’t tell if this is sarcastic?
And thank you so much for the tips I'm getting ready to join and we'll getting in shape to before I join
Thanks for all the information I’m currently considering joining
I definitely voted for you as soon as the poll came up!
I leave for basic in 7 months, 25B. I’ve been watching your videos to know what to expect and to prepare
I’m loving your videos! Thank you so much for all the advice!
Hey i just want to know your opinion, which is better
1. join military(any branch) after getting a 4 year bachelor degree
2. Join after highschool.
CAPTAIN TUFA Join After School
if you join before school the gi bill will pay for you're school for 3 years and pay you E5 pay while in school and if you move to texas they will pay for you're school for ever if it's a texas state school for being a vet.
after high school, you'll get your college debt mostly paid
Join with a college degree and you can go to OCS and make more money.
as far as what you said, everything is good to have/bring. you forgot money. cash. yes in bootcamp you will get an ATM card but sometimes you at least i did we had an oppertunity to buy a sunday newspaper outside of the chowhall. they didnt take credit. most everything else you get issued basic stuff the first night and later store trips allows you to buy more stuff
Not sure if it applies to all bct but at Ft Sill we could purchase stamps at the PX (this was back in Fall)
I'm assuming Space Force basic training would need the same items?
For watches, can we use a Garmin watch?
One of the good things about Marine basic is you don't bring anything to basic, except for yourself and the clothes on your back. You are stripped down and relieved of all your possessions when you arrive, and won't see any of them again until you graduate. By that time, none of your clothes will likely fit anyway. Don't worry about a wristwatch as you won't be allowed to possess one until you graduate.
Hey Matt!! Your videos are so helpful! Keep up the good work!! I haven’t seen if you have won, but I hope you did! #TeamMatt!
When I went to basic they gave us a packing list. Then they made us buy everything on it as soon as we got there. For watches, go with a G Shock. I had a timex fall apart.
This helped me so much, Thank you!
Ahhh I leave in June, this video was super helpful!!!
Good luck trainee
Super helpful info! How about a video on tips or tricks for morning preparation? And how mornings are like in BCT. I leave in abt 2 weeks to BCT. And your videos help me alot! Thanks!
Brandon Lima Start waking up at 0430, square away your rack, shave AND shit, and be ready for PT by 0500. There's your mornings
You forgot about going to bed at 0200 lol
Would I be able to wear a FDE watch to basic?
ABSOLUTELY NUMBER ONE!!! Take talcum powder, lots of talcum powder. If you’ve never been there, you won’t understand. If you’ve been there, you know exactly what I mean.
What about laundry detergent? I'm assuming basic will have laundry areas. Do you have to pay to use them?
you should do an update on this cause now you will need more things because we have to quarantine
Does anyone know about bringing personal towels or if it’s helpful to bring a light portable charger? I’m asking cause I wanna give my brother a present before he leaves in two weeks...
Do they let you use a straight razor in basic training?
Not sure but I doubt it. That's basically a knife and that's not allowed. lol
Graduated basic on Thursday, now I’m at AIT ft lee. I hope it’s not like basic so far reception ppl are mean af
Ehh you just gotta give it right back
You can buy stamps! I went to bending and your able to buy stamps at the px
where's bending? is it close to Benning? 😆😆😆
I need coffee and fish oil. Coffee because yea and fish oil because joints are going to be “stiff” for everyone.
Benning, they make you buy everything you need regardless if you already have it. Bring less, bag weighs less, shark attack hurts less
All I took to basic was the cloths I was wearing, my wallet, and my paperwork.
bill smith what type of paperwork
@@ejsogroovy2061 just the paperwork I got at MEPS and had on me. Though stamps are probably a good thing to bring because when I went in that was still the primary way of communicating to people was sending letters in the mail.
Don't you need other clothes to wear the next day? Or do they give you clothes there?
Hey, my recruiter told my I can enter basic as E-2 if I have at least 24 hrs of college under my belt .. this true??
VenomousKoolAid No
VenomousKoolAid do you mean 24credits? Im getting in as a E-2 on 24 college credits
Yes it is true. I just signed my contract with the Army with 50 credits I needed 45 to be an E3. I believe its 24 fir E2. If you go the goarmy.com all the information is there. You can even ask the "virtual recruiter" on the web site.
Yeah it's what I did
Spp493 What if you've got 90 community college credits from taking dual-enrollment in high school?
Thinking of joining the Army National Guard Reserve and Basic Training is the only thing im worried abt....these videos help a lot brother i appreciate it 🤙
can you bring an electric razor to basic training? I haven't shaved in 2 years because I get nasty ingrown hairs and I could probably get a waiver but what about basic?
Joey Carrino Negative.
Buy Dorco, they are the same ones as Dollar Shave Club but less expensive. You can even purchase the handles. I just bought my husband a years supply for $38.
Don't forget to bring a towel! Cough , cough!
I still can’t believe you got to have your ph with you...just wow!
Make a video telling the whole process an individual goes through after basic training
What if a recruit chooses not to write home during basic?
I didn’t think you could bring a watch or a phone. And are you aloud to bring an electric razor?
Is bringing a sketchbook and pencils, erasers and, etc allowed?
Will I be allowed my GPS watch? I use my Garmin for training, it's waterproof and built to take a beating.
@MilitaryBronyforlife it's a Garmin Fenix 5X Plus Sapphire so I'm thinking I won't be allowed it. Thanks for the reply, I will probably just get a cheap one off Amazon for Basic.
What work out plans and educational exercises should i follow to prep for basic
I do not know in the American army but in the army that I was
The most important thing not to forget is to put the motivation under the pillow
At home he should not break until you come home
Time to prep for myself and others.
Hey Matt, for a watch can we bring G shocks to basic?
I got HELLA good razors from Ireland (i'm not irish myself) like 8 or 10 in a pack for 1 euro...good effing deal.
This guys a IT TECH guy they take you're watch in the infantry at basic.
