NOO WHAT
Yeah, I work at a cinema and I laughed a little when I heard it. I was cleaning up after the customers left, and all of a sudden I hear Lin singing about his cart of chilled desserts.
I proceeded to tell almost every customer coming for the two showings after that there's a bonus song after the credits, purely because I thought it was hilarious.
I agree that Lin is usually the “worst” singer in anything he writes but even then he isn’t bad, just not technically skilled and trained like those Broadway-tier singers. One of those times where the worst is still unique, believable, and enjoyable.
Is it bad that i like his singing. It fits his style. Its odd as we are used to show stopper belts like phillip quasts(confrontation and stars) or seasons of love or defying gravity. I think that in quality its good. In terms of actual capability its not and Lin knows that. Hence why he raps a lot. And is an artistic genius.
@@sungod1384 no, lin's voice is catchy and enjoyable. his style of singing isnt really like broadway because ofcourse he's a rapper.
@@alalalalsekkeke i agree 100%. My point is put him next to phillip quast and you can see whos an objectively better singer. That doesnt mean lin sucks far from it. He is a genius and is a very good actor. And is a skilled rapper.
I really like his singing. Sure he may not be the most polished singer and that stands out when surrounded by Broadway singers but the worst thing you can be is shy and in confident. And Lin has so much charisma that his voice works. Idk. My opinion.
Did anyone else feel like he almost sounded more trained in this movie than he did in Hamilton? (this is an observation from a very much NOT trained singer :))
But there’s an easter egg where Nina’s Dad has You’ll be Back playing on the radio so this is a 10/10 masterpiece

I understand not everyone is gonna take this away from the movie (and the musical) but from a theoretical and cultural point of view the way this musical blends together so many Latin styles and rhythms together while using them to reflect each character's culture in a unique way is absolutely remarkable.
The styles are also leitmotifs. And each person has their own motif. Champagne is vanessa/ love story arc, breathe is ninas and you can hear it sprinkled in. Also the blending of latin styles with rnb just blends nyc. Its quite suprising how well recieved it was especially that broadway is filled with old white ladies and this doesnt seem like old white ladies would be cool with that.
If im sure it won like tonys in 2008 and 2009.
Absolutely! Also when the Puerto Rican characters show up you get a lot of salsa/merengue, when the Dominicans show up you get a lot of soca rhythm as well as some salsa, and the Cuban characters get different things but my favorite is when Claudia gets this Guaracha thing during the blackout that kind of shows her culture and age.

I also dislike how drawn-out and misplaced Abuela's death felt. In the musical she dies after "Carnaval del Barrio" and it's revealed softly and quietly by Benny over Dispatch. Coming straight from one of the most uplifting, joyful, and fun numbers of the entire show right into her death is an emotional gut punch that doesn't have the same weight in the movie. That tragic sense of juxtaposition really struck a chord with me and it's not there in the movie version.
Yeah, but it's a sticky situation because Benny over Dispatch wouldn't work the same way in the movie. On the Broadway, it seems normal that one character sings alone and says something but in movies, you have to make characters say the lines in the context of a story. It would feel fake if Benny would just randomly announce Abuela's death on the radio
@@NameNik223 i honestly disagree, it would work even better. Makes the juxtaposition even more striking and abrupt.
They didn’t cut piragua reprised, it’s the end credit scene
Wait really?! I didn’t stick around. Now I definitely have an excuse to go see it again, like I wasn’t going to already.
Yeah I stuck around and that was the post credit scene.
I was just looking through the comments section for this!
Shit, i just left the theater
I think in the movie they sacrificed the breadth of Abuela Claudia and Nina's storylines partially due to runtime and partially to give Anthony Ramos more screentime. But for me, that change really didn't work because not only are you losing some of the show's most moving songs, but Vanessa, even with the added aspiration to be a fashion designer, isn't compelling enough to carry the plot. The scrap of paint rag sewed into a mall tube top is not a believable enough reason for Usnavi to stay in New York as compared to being reminded of the impact a single person can have on their community. I loved the choreography and cinematography in the movie and I'm grateful it exists at all, but the changes they made left the characters underdeveloped and a somewhat thin plot even thinner, unfortunately.
when they showed that tube top at the end i burst out laughing lol, it was so ugly to me
@@gdg4686p IKR!?! they made such a big deal about her inspiration and the paint rag and then THAT was the result? It was so baaaaad. 😂
Yes yes yes THIS IS WHAT I WAS THINKING
fr tho? they really cut out graffiti pete's work? like Finale was the one im looking up for??
And did anybody else remember that they cut out the mom?
I think there’s a lot of points for people who didn’t get some aspects of the movie or musical that strictly have to do with not sharing the Latino experience, for example: Schaf feeling weird about the musical being built around someone winning the lotto. My grandma, mom, and pretty much everyone in my family who all immigrated from Venezuela have bought the lotto tickets every week ever since they arrived here, and it’s something that I can easily say is a shared experience in our community. Writing a musical with that as one of the central events speaks heavily to a fantasy that many of us don’t really think about but is ingrained in our culture.
"people come though for a few cold waters and a lottery ticket, just a part of the routine / ev'rybody's got a job ev'body's got a dream"
I'm not even an immigrant but my Mexican heritage taught me to respect the lotto, been buying em since before I legally could lol
same here but Colombian
Same here but peruvian
Not latino but same with American-Vietnamese culture
Hearing Lin hit the note in Pirauga was very shocking I didn’t think he could 😂😂
I was nearly flinching getting ready for that voice crack that never came, I'm proud of him 😂

Same. In the movie I was expecting the winning ticket line and was a bit sad it wasn't in there
I feel that it makes paciencias y fe a bit more significant , like" after all these years....I can finally rest" and double that emotion that it already had
As a fan of the original musical I'm pretty pissed they cut out mr. Rosarios song but left in the piraguero song. The song never fails to bring me to tears and it hits really close to home for a lot of people and it sucks that they reduced it to a singular line.
What u got against the piragüero song? but yeah I do agree, I wish they added Inútil
Weirdly enough you can kind of hear some bits of it when Kevin is talking to Nina about how she is now better than him.
yeah seriously, I don't begrudge them making him a single dad but that song would've tied so well with that and made the change less grating imo
I heard your username as I read it
Yes! Inútil and Enough are both really good. Inútil always makes me cry and I would have loved to see it on the big screen.
One change you didn't touch on that I personally loved was the way they fleshed out Vanessa more - iirc her dreams and relationship with Usnavi always came off as positive, but two-dimensional at best. I think they did a really good job with her character, even though the extra screen time she got might have been borrowed from Nina and Benny :/
I agree she was one of my favorites in this, along with Sonny
I'm so upset they cut Everything I Know. Not even because it was my favorite song but it shows how Abuela Claudia affected everyone's lives, not just Usnavi's. I feel like if they had kept it, it would have made them cutting a lot of Abuela from the movie a bit more forgivable
Plus in the musical Everything I know is when Nina resolves to go back to Stanford- in the movie she sorta of out nowhere just chooses to be like “imma make a difference for Latin people” and it’s kind of jarring to watch and the scene is pretty forgettable, meanwhile in Everything I Know she sings “I’ll make you proud of everything I know” and it’s abula’s influence in making sure she had an education that pushes Nina to go back to collage
@@joyramirez7518 I felt that in the movie it was the confrontation about how someone she knows doesn't have the opportunity that she has, combined with Abuela's profound message of small dignities in the face of a cruel world, but I can see why other people might not have seen that as enough of a push
As a theatre kid who loves to pick apart movie musicals, I really enjoyed In the Heights! So many movie musicals feel like they are in a struggle between "movie" and "musical" and are trying to sit at the cinema adults table by downplaying the theatrical aspect of it. It was a breath of fresh air to see a movie musical that was unapologetically a musical and established the typical theatre suspension of disbelief right away. This opened the door for more darling visuals ans scenes (especially "Paciencia Y Fe" which was my favorite song) and created the best Hollywood movie musical probably since Chicago in terms of the musical diegesis.
i looooved paciencia y fe
Anyone else also kind of pissed about Blackout as well? I feel like all the tension and stakes in that number were completely taken out. And I was really sad because when I saw In the Heights the musical it gave me chills but I didn't really feel much of anything from that number which is just unfortunate because that number should have so much impact.
yes!!!! it was my favorite song, and i don' t think they did it that well. espeically in the part where claudia gives usnavi the money, which was really impactful, but they cut out.
yeah it just seemed like benny and nina had been together the whole time they had like no conflicts
@@adamb3266 about that, why did Benny and Nina suddenly kiss out of nowhere just after arguing? It´s not quite clear to me with just hearing the album
Yeah but the movie takes place in modern day. If a blackout were to happen it’d be realistic that people would use their phones for light, something that wasn’t feasible in 2008.
Plus I get them not wanting to display the whole thing as if a black out is all it takes for the latino community to break out into riots and chaos automatically.
Personally having listened to Blackout a lot, there were a lot of subtle things I liked, like how the pacing was different from the original. Yeah it’s jarring if you’ve liked the original (personally it’s my favorite song in both versions) but like, that’s the point of the song, it’s supposed to be chaotic and the changed structure makes it so it is chaotic even if you were already familiar with the original. And then the whole “taking that interaction between Benny and Nina and giving it to Vanessa and Usnavi” was cool to me because it took me a sec to realize why it was familiar even though it wasn’t in the original.

Adding onto the abuela Claudia argument, I didn’t like the fact they went into carnival de barrio after her death ://
Her death feels so much more trivial when they’re partying like crazy a few moments after she’s passed
I understand that it was to lift the mood and put the fight back into WH, but I get that these people are still mourning, and the only reason it happens isn't to honor Claudia; it's to celebrate the salon ladies moving to the Bronx. I loved the number, but the story around it could have been done better
honestly, i'm just happy it doesn't suck. i think my expectations for movie musicals are pretty much on the floor, so if it's just not terrible it'll do well with me

True story:
During the fall of 2020, my girlfriend was supposed to do a high school version of “In the Heights” as a musical, but the show was cancelled because of COVID, and by the time she returned to school, she primarily focused on getting into college and it was sad that she never got to be apart of the musical. I don't get why everyone acts like Miranda can't sing.
Yeah, he's weaker than the others, but he's not a bad singer by a long shot
It's a unique voice , people expect the typical Broadway preformer voice when other voices give the musical such a flare, the og cast of Hamilton has an energy that i have found so hard to find for other casts who performed it , Lin has no chill and that energy he gives his characters is what makes them so memorable
I really love lins voice i think it really stands out and he adds lots of emotion and personality to it.... ya its not the best technically but his performance and delivery choices make up for it 100 percent
He can but sometimes it sounds like he's off-key, so it might just be his delivery
Also, casting too because apparently there's this new movie called Vivo where he plays this cute small Boots-ish monkey character and his voice doesn't fit because he's too "mature" (well, mostly his voice is too mature-sounding for the role)

The movie actually made me way more emotional than the show, idk why. Something about the way they framed everything added new context that was always there in the lyrics but just really brought out by watching the singers in that setting. I started crying in Breathe and pretty much didn’t stop until carnaval del barrio
yeah, everything felt so much closer and quieter and more personal
Same here. I think this is a testament to how freaking well they took advantage of the liberties of cinema to enhance the emotions. Paciencia y Fe was already powerful to begin with, but with all of that choreography in the subway, and that lighting, and those well placed cuts? I could hardly see the screen through the tears TBH.
I never watched the broadway play, my only references were the album, and some High School version on youtube, therefore I didn´t understand much of the plots in the original, like why Benny and Nina arguing but suddenly kissing. So yeah, the movie made me more emotional as well
@@Kabbaway Fair. I did think that the Paciencia y Fe number coming right before her death was questionable (it's different in the original play). i relate to nina so much and it killed me that not only did they cut a lot of her stuff out, but the tensions between benny and kevin too. their ending doesn’t feel as earned, you know?
Yes, I'm upset they cut off her line: "I was working 2 jobs to pay for books I didn't have time to read", to me, it's one of her most impactful lines in the original because it showed how much of a hard worker she is.
I'm not a 100% on board to all the changes they made to Nina's storyline for the exact reason you said, her hopeful ending didn't feel as earned as the original, because it lacked the character development the Musical has.

I was sad about that too. A little sad it wasnt in the movie but i think the movie was still great.
@@ReinaMystic dude, I totally thought the same omg
The Bo Burnham laugh literally jump scared me. Fuck. Now I gotta relisten to welcome to the internet again.
The biggest thing that bugged me is that Sonny never makes an appearance in the finale (in the present), so it's kinda like...Did he get his green card? My friends who knew nothing about the musical legit asked me if he got deported because they never really resolve that plot point at the end
Seriously tho, I was so happy that they gave more depth and an actual backstory for Sonny but then they just completely forget it.
Really upset they cut Enough. It’s such a funny, moving song and I think they lost a key moment in the musical when they did. Maybe they were trying to stress how much of a mother figure Abuela is to Nina, but that doesn’t make sense since they cut out “Everything I Know”, which shows how much of a mother figure she was.
Never seen the play onstage, but I am disappointed that 'Enough' was cut too! Also, 'Atencion' leading into 'Alabanza'.
What are everyone's opinions on the fact that they broke the 3-day structure and had the final parts occur like a month after the blackout? I guess it heightens the emotion of When The Sun Goes Down because Benny & Nina are closer to being apart, but the change was sort of unnecessary imo

I also felt like the only reason their relationship comes off as semi-convincing was due to Corey Hawkins doing so much of the emotional heavy lifting. He’s an incredible talent. Overall, it was good. My college did a show of In the Heights a few years ago and ever since then, I enjoyed it and listen to the soundtrack once in a while.
I do not enjoy musicals usually, and I can say, I watched it yesterday and genuinely thought it was really good
I actually wouldn't mind an "Inside" review. It was an intereting and banger of a musical comedy special which still somewhat relates to your channel when it comes to musicals. Although, it's up to you and it's fine if you don't want to. Also... cool reference to his internet song and using it as a clip :)))
After watching Hamilton and Greatest Showman back to back I'm taking a break from musicals. But I think I might end up watching this since I've heard really good things about it.
Yea I didn't like how they changed certain lyrics or completely cut out some songs but I still find this to be a very fun and beautiful looking movie.
my biggest problem was they basically cut the conflict between nina and benny at the club, the fight, and the climax of the first act with their kiss during the final whistle of the fireworks in blackout. but i loved the movie.
What are your thoughts on the Cruella movie? I've yet to see In The Heights, but it looks fantastic!
My guess is that he just thinks it’s another Disney cash grab movie (which it kind of is).
They did piragua reprise as an after credit scene
What also bothered me about the changes is that they didn't connect with the lyrics anymore like abuela's bredcrums and a bunch of other details that the people who know the musical will get but are totally loose on the plot of the movie and just make a few passages kinda clunky for people who are seeing this story for the first time
That was my big thing too. They changed things, but didn't follow through with the chain reactions those changes made to keep everything consistent. So many of the song lyrics no longer matched the plot.
Agreed. In the finale, Usnavi sings "I’m steppin’ to Vanessa, I’m gettin’ a second date" when they're already married and have a kid, like what?
@@rocky4264 I don't think he's literally saying it to present day Vanessa. I think it's just kind of a voice over thing meant to compliment the visual we're seeing (During that part we see Usnavi and Vanessa kiss right after he tells Sonny he's staying within the narrative of the story he's telling. God that was complicated to describe).
@@rocky4264 I’d say the bigger inconsistency for me is Usnavi BUYING A WHOLE ASS PROPERTY IN ANOTHER COUNTRY and then they have the gall to keep “It’ll take most of that cash just to save my ass from financial ruin” from 96,000.
Like… how’d you pay for the frickin beachfront property that you’re going to have to invest a ton of money into to restore IF YOU ARE BROKE???
And it makes Abuela giving him the money feel kinda gross too. Like, he already clearly has enough money for that expense at the beginning of the movie, but she still leaves the whole 96k to the one guy in the movie who apparently already has a ton of money just lying around? Not even “A third for you, a third for me, the rest for Sonny?”
Just, the stakes are totally shot between them cutting Nina and Abuela’s plots and then getting rid of any real need for the lottery to be a plot point at all.
Like, what’s the point of caring about or rooting for Usnavi’s dream of moving back to PR when he’s already got it all planned out within the first few minutes of the movie? He’s not actually working for anything for the whole movie, just biding his time until his flight.
I watched your videos 3 years ago pretty heavily before I kinda drifted away and one of your newer videos popped up in my recommended and I just wanted to say congratulations and it’s super cool to see that you’ve made it man keep up the good work🤝
YAAS I watched the movie last night and was waiting for this
Hamilton: 8/10
In the Heights: 10/10.
no
@@tombaxter9947 What do you mean no?
@@darkhorse944 I'd say they're both 10/10
i cant decide which one is better
Agreed
when I realized the mom was dead, I got really sad because I really liked 'Enough' from the musical, lol.
seeing this movie was amazing but so surreal. most of it was filmed in my neighboorhood, and knowing that people from across the globe are going to see the tunnel I took everyday to get from my house to my grandma's house and remember it because it was used for THAT scene involving abuela claudia (you know the one), the train station(s) i'd walk in and out of to school or to get home, a piragua cart (known by me as a frio frio cart but oh well), me and my sister's old elementary school (featured in the end credits), and just... everything that I grew up with is surreal. they even said the name of the street I lived on in the movie, as well as the street my abuela lives on.... it feels like what I imagine the entire country watching one of your family home videos would feel like. It's strange, exhilarating, and bittersweet all at once, and truly a unforgettable experience
I'm glad this was an in person review because I'm trying not to spoil myself on how the movie adapts the musical, but I'm gonna watch it tonight with my friend! It means a lot to both of us, despite me cursing LMM's name every chance I get. :P
Update: you said songs got cut out so I went to go see which ones and WOW the movie said "fuck act 2" :(
Second update: watched it! .... Wow Abuela Claudia was really done dirty 😭
Wow. This came quicker than expected! I never clicked so fast on one of ur vids before!
You somehow still carry the energy of Tamatoa reaction images when you talk in real life.
Also what kind of livestock do you want me to sacrifice so that you'll do a Rango video?
So, who's gonna tell him about the after-credits scene
It took him less than a week to turn Bo's new single into a meme
Unscripted Schaffrillis rant: "A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one".
Unscripted shaffrillas rant, scripted shaffrillas rant, what's the difference?
@@glendarjj3991 I love both but sometimes it's nice to see a more "natural" review style.
@@collincabrera2270 yeah I think natural reviews are great. But what I meant is shaffrillas just sounds like he's going off on a rant in general lmao
@@glendarjj3991 Oh my bad lol. I should have said review instead of rant.
Love watching your vids! Keep it up!
i lost my shit when Patrick Page turned up for that one scene
"sold his business to hades" lmao
Somehow he seems even more genuine in person.
This felt more like a behind the scenes of Schaffrillas recording process, than a review of the Heights lol
4:50 Piragua Reprise is actually the post credit scene to the movie. It’s a really nice moment for fans of both In the Heights and Hamilton to see Lin and Chris share very nice on screen chemistry. Also, I think Lin did a very well job vocally in this movie. I was very impressed.
As someone who's never seen the original, I still felt Abuela's important impact on the entire community from how she was portrayed in the movie and her death hit me pretty hard
i cried it was great
I'm imagining your mailman dropping your mail and hearing "The mail's here" and being perplexed
Great review. I’m excited to go see this next Monday with a friend.
As someone with spanish as their second language, hearing Schaffrillas use spanish terms is something I never knew I needed until now
Abuela doesn't tell usnavy about the ticket during the blackout. He finds it when he's packing up to leave in a box
they didn't cut piragua reprise, it's at the very end of the end credits
Schaff: the plot hinges on someone winning the lottery which is kinda absurd
Yes because no one has ever won the lottery
Here to say I’m waiting for the Luca review
I will definitely make a ytp eventually with this video
