  • Critics are calling ‘In the Heights,’ the Lin-Manuel Miranda-composed musical journey through the New York neighborhood of Washington Heights, the movie of the summer - and it arrives packed with songs that will be stuck in your head until NEXT summer rolls around. Ahead of the film’s release in theaters and on HBO Max this June, Miranda sat down with Rotten Tomatoes for a deep dive on the most beloved songs from the film, an adaptation of his first musical, from showstopping “96,000” to the poignant and moving “Breathe.” Plus, as he walks us through the inspiration behind the songs and his lyrical and compositional choices, Miranda celebrates the work of Jon M. Chu in staging sequences “as big as the characters’ dreams” and reveals the page-and-a-half he took from the ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ book when writing the original show.

3:00 That concentric circles motif can be seen in an even wider scope than stage musicals -- it's in as prosaic a place as the 1976 CB Radio hit "Convoy", where we have a "lil' ol' convoy" and then a "great big convoy" and then a "mighty convoy" through the choruses... and even though (in the song) we don't necessarily meet all the characters in each ring, the rings continue to nest and get bigger...

Yes they’ve said in a lot of interviews that most of the extras are from the Washington Heights area (at least from what i can tell) :)

@@lowselfesteve1478 Yes, I watched several interviews afterwards and the superintendent with the broom in the apartment building is the actual super. of the building that they rented to film in.

I think Lin is just on the cusp of Gen X… But yes Anthony and all of the main characters are millennial and sonny is Gen Z
Since the original show was set in 2008 and they were all about 19-21 then they still would’ve been millennial‘s but so would have Sonny.
in the movie it seems to be set in modern day and they have made some characters like Usnavi and Vanessa a bit older. Correct me if I’m wrong though I haven’t had a chance to see it yet.

@@prof.evilpictures8696 Usnavi states in the movie "I'm almost 30" and Anthony Ramos is 29. The movie seems to be set 2018ish, kinda middle of that term. (There's a very notable line in 96000 that was changed)
