I feel like the Spongebob musical is the Captain Underpants movie of musicals. Even if you don’t totally love it, you have to agree that it’s a perfect adaptation of what makes the original so unique.
Meh, the show is funnier and lazier and stonier. This felt like “Cartoon Theme Park Show!” To me. Everyone was just big and energetic and….that’s not what Spongebob is.
Things about this musical that I love: - The pirate bits - The way they made everything wacky but still artistic - Plankton casually stopping time whenever he talks about his evil schemes - Plankton and Karen - Tackles racism and discrimination in a way that kids can understand - "Land mammals go home!" followed by Sandy saying "I thought this WAS my home" hit me in the feels man - If you didn't tear up at Best Day Ever you're lying - Spongebob is ripped. - The fact that Spongebob being ripped weirdly makes sense since he's a martial artist and catches jellyfish as a hobby. - Squidward tap dancing and Plankton rapping is something unthinkable yet it baffles me how fitting it is - "It's the goverment's fault!" "it's the media's fault!" - Spongebob and Sandy's friendship - The sound effects guy - The maestro basically being her own character - Ethan Slater singing while upside down and climbing all over the place like how does he do that. Spare us some talent, man - The insanely creative glowing sponges during (Just a) Simple Sponge - Patrick carrying Spongebob bridal style - The actors accurately portraying the original voices of the characters, like that's so impressive - The way Spongebob walks is just...so Spongebob - The mayor singing opera during When the Going Gets Tough - The Electric Skates performing on actual rollerskates and skateboards - Pearl - The guy with the blue skirt pointing the red arrow. I don't know who he is or why he's there but I love him - When two characters are having an argument and the rest of the cast looks at them back and forth with the "woosh" sound - The newscaster getting increasingly disheveled as the story progresses - Creative use of props and stage design - I remember when the musical wasn't out yet and people were very skeptical of it. Some even said it'll be a disaster. But by some miracle they pulled this off and I can't be happier. - Probably a hundred other things but the list would be too long EDIT: I keep coming back to add more things to this list lol
@@kadmos3770 no they're not the voice actors. The only one who was in the show was Tom Kenney (who voices Spongebob) but he was only in the nickelodeon showing.
I actually REALLY love No Control. I think it immediately rips you out of the happy mood of spongebob and says OMG THE WORLD IS ENDING and totally creeps you out
Fun fact: No control wasn’t written for the Spongebob Musical, when they approached Bowie he told them he wanted to help but didn’t have time (he was probably too busy writing his own musical and dealing with his decreasing health), he still wanted to help the project, so he allowed them to use *any of his songs* for the musical. They picked a song off the 90’s album “1.Outside”, which is a concept album about a 14 year old girl who gets kidnapped by a cult who thinks that murder is considered art. Also it was produced by the legendary producer Brian Eno.
I REALLY enjoy the costume designs here as well. Sandy's afro looks almost like a helmet. Krabs with boxing gloves in genius, Plankton with an eyepatch is genius and the extra pair of pants they give Squidward is great as well. The costumes may look cheap at first glance but they're actually really good once you think about it
Yeah, it has this DIY vibe that fits the theme and aesthetic of SpongeBob so well! Squidward's costume is just a polo shirt because that's technically what he's wearing in the show all the time, same goes for Mr Krabs-- the "cheapness" of the costumes just add to the charm of the musical and the show, it's amazing
I’m glad they put it online. it was better in person, but that’s because of the glory of the experience of being there! It was a great privilege I had to see it live. I’m grateful for the soundtrack too. Everyone should be able to enjoy this masterpiece
where they decided to put "The Best Day Ever" was completely genius. I am such a sucker for bittersweet songs, and when they began singing it in a sort of melancholy i started tearing up. spongebob has and always will be a huge part of who i am today, and seeing it turned into something more (that still had a soul in it), see the liveliness, the heart and the soul behind it in a new form is also a bittersweet thing to me. i just love it so much.
I can't believe that Squidward got an actual clarinet. Those things are expensive (not saying it was in perfect condition)! As a clarinetist, it's a nice touch.
I rented a clarinet in middle school. I didn’t realize why I was the only one in the class to use one, until I realized the only reason I could rent one was because it was my cousin’s. She kept it and rents it out on occasion.
Real talk, putting "best day ever" after they found out the device worked and they are celebrating would have been smart; putting the song BEFORE they knew if the device would work and save the day was a stroke of GENIUS! It completely restructures the concept of the original song, and perfectly encapsulates who SpongeBob is: an optimist in the worst situations. And the fact that he was able to get everyone to sing along and make them optimistic too, including Squidward, is beautiful. I want to do a video on this song alone because its so perfect
Amen. That's why the scene always makes me teary. As someone who has struggled with anxiety and depression for most of my life, Spongebob's declaration of optimism is so inspiring. He finally puts his foot down against Squidward's cynicism. He doesn't deny the situation, but refuses to give into despair. "Look! The sun is still shining. And the kelp! It's still... kelpy." Things are scary. But that doesn’t mean we give up. We can still do our part to make every day "the best day ever." What a relevant, yet equally timeless message.
The usage of Best Day Ever in this musical is simply masterful. I knew it was going to be in the soundtrack going in, but I had no idea what I was getting into. Frankly perfect
This could've SO easily been a corporate product, an empty, soulless musical. But the beauty of it... is that it wasn't. It was something built with an amazing understanding of both the source material AND the fans. It made something that felt both professional AND creative all at once, between the sets, actors, and even the score. Honestly, it's phenomenal how well this turned out in the end.
Nickelodeon even said that they didn’t want the musical to be made unless they could make it something new and original and not just cheap nostalgia or one of those “[cartoon] live on stage” shows intended only for little kids
I remember that being the day I realized I was too old for stuff like SpongeBob, or that it at least wasn’t for me anymore, lol. One day I was flipping through channels and came across SpongeBob juuuuuust as that scene started, and I nearly vomited. It seared itself into my brain. I never again watched SpongeBob on actual TV because I just couldn’t stop thinking about it 😅
That scene is so disturbing that it dumbfounded me for some reason. I feel like Season 5 - 8 is the dark age of Spongebob where the show jumped the sharks by the time Stephen Hillenburg left and that really damaged the show nearly. I'm glad that Season 9 ended the dark era and went back to its routes for now. I don't know what's gonna happen to Spongebob Squarepants after Stephen Hillenburg's death. Also, Kamp Koral isn't even that bad as everyone expected to be. Maybe it's just the misinformation that used his words to justify the hatred towards spin-offs when he never even said that in the first place.
the only thing i like is how the dwarf somehow just steals everything and pulls it out of his pockets. it'd be better if we saw how he did it, but... it's kinda funny.
I was so upset when Nickelodeon announced that they would show the musical on the channel and all the comments were saying it looked awful and that they would never watch it
Because people said that Stephen Hillenburg won't like it. It turned out that he actually loved it so much. I just watched the portion of the musical on TV and I say that's it's really good.
Ngl when it first aired on TV I didn't like it and stopped watching after plankton was introduced mainly because I didn't like musicals nor rap (still don't but you get my point). Children would also dislike it because they would see their favorite characters turned into humans that barely sounded like the ones in the show, and with the lack of musicals in general for children, I don't think they'd know exactly how to follow along. This musical essentially became a hit with the people who watched the old episodes when they came out and with kids who only watched it because it's SpongeBob. Then again, I don't watch TV on a regular basis either so what am I to say about it
i kinda feel like shit for being turned away. i actually don't care much for the designs. they don't... quite... *feel* enough like the show. but, after watching this i am now wanting to give it a chance.
I think one of the reasons Spongebob has so many musical influences is because that's how the original show was. If you take a closer look at the soundtrack from the show and the games, you realize that it's musical styles are very widespread! There's instances of country, rock, jazz, and of course, Hawaiian music! It would make sense that they'd want to capture all those genres together by hiring many different artists. :)
@@laura-ni8ym True, true!! They also were meant to include Slash as a guest star in the 2nd movie, but sadly his scene was cut. He's one of my favorite guitarists today ;-; Still cool they wanted to include him though!!
the lady who played her was EIGHTEEN and already on Broadway. she got the hardest notes to flex and pulled it off. also her costume is amazing. in some behind the scenes footage, jai'len josey (the actor) talks about how its important to be nice because you may get the job over someone whose more talented, so not only is she an amazing singer/actor but a decent person
The character/costume design is fuckin impeccable in the musical and if they ever make a cheap cash in live action reboot of the show they BETTER use the musical designs. Black Sandy is the only true Sandy in my heart
Schaffrillas: "And Mrs. Puff is a heavy drinker." Me: Considering all the shit she puts through with Spongebob and her husband's corpse being used as a novelty lamp . . . yeah, makes sense.
I just performed this with my community theater and I brought this massive flask that I had for years and never used. The audiences laughter when she pulled it out brought me a lot of joy.
They did make a “let’s take bikini bottom and push it somewhere else!” reference. I perfectly recall it. Maybe they only said it in the live and cut it out when they were trimming it for TV. They took out a little bit to make it fit. Also, Tom Kenny did more than just one appearance as Patchy! I saw him perform and was shook
This musical is such an underrated gem, when I first saw the pro-recording What I thought was going to be a simple cash-grab ended up feeling more like a love letter to Spongebob. Everything about the musical was amazing that people who didn't watch the show could still appreciate its randomness and creativity, while at the same time, people who did watch the show are reminded of aspects that made the characters so lovable and show so memorable.
I got to see it live on Broadway, and let me tell you, the roar that *erupted* from the audience after his music number was one of the most heart warming things I have experienced. The adoration and cheering was a sight to behold; it just went on and on. I feel a weight has been lifted knowing that, somehow some way, Squidward got that validation in the most amazing way possible.
I’m glad that they made the costumes easy enough to recadnise their respective character, without having the actors wear giant suits of cartoon drawings
I know no one fucking cares exept my local hacker i trapped in the cellar again but I find it cool how the actor of one of my favorite characters in spongebob has the same first name as me
Fun fact: They cut a scene from the filmed version where Plankton asks Karen to call him "big guy" and it's kind of adorable. It's on UA-cam if you want to see it, it's cute.
@@kadmos3770 I don't think Schlatt likes being called a Minecraft UA-camr. He's gotten annoyed at people a few times for calling him a Minecrafter, on livestreams.
No control is actually my favorite song, next to the best day ever. It’s a drastic tone shift where it works in the context of the show and unexpectedly goes hard, especially during SpongeBob’s solo in the middle
tbh the most unrealistic part was actually spongebob "unable to bench press a teddy bear" squarepants being played by ethan "former wrestler & professional twunk" slater
Spongebob being a whimp always was at odds with what his actual athletic ability was shown to be in the show. Dude honestly has a fairly active lifestyle that would give him a pretty fit bod.
Hearing you dislike Poor Pirates breaks my stupid little heart, but I respect you regardless for this. I'm so glad you love this musical as much as me, thanks so much for letting more people know about it :)
@@dynamicraspberry2007 i’d argue it in no way deserved ALL its tony’s. some of them? yes. and it definitely deserved its best musical win. but especially for the tech awards, spongebob should’ve beaten it.
“I’m not a loser” is so fucking good. I listen to it all the time. The guy playing Squidward fucking owned his part. He seems a lot more experienced than the rest of the cast. He and Mr Krabs had the closest voices to the original show (though in the OST they were clearly still getting used to things so I feel most of the songs and voices are way better in the live show). Also, full love to Plankton and Karen’s character designs.
The only thing I liked about Shrek The Musical was how The Banished Fairy-Tale Characters got to take matters into their own hands and stand up to Farquadd, while revealing that he's a son of a dwarf. I especially liked how there was a variety of them, from The Ugly Duckling, to Peter Pan, to All 3 of the Three Bears. But then again, that's just me, and we all have our own opinions.
Yeah... sadly. I watched it when it aired and I distinctly remember getting upset when I noticed some scenes and songs were cut down or removed completely. Like the whole "Big Guy" scene was removed and I was like... well that dirty joke might be too much to be aired on Nickelodeon lol
The ONLY bummer about the proshot is that you can't see the giant boulders being catapulted onto the stage by a rube goldberg machine that's part of the overarching set and that Lili Cooper was in Tootsie so per performance wasn't filmed. I saw the show live, and it was absolutely incredible.
fun fact: steven hillenburg fully written the plot of the musical just before he died so this is one of the last spongebob projects he worked on edit: i actually did see it live back in late december 2019 & i really enjoyed it
I was just thinking that this musical should've been his big send off/tribute (although i cried and got chills for the long moment of silence they gave him after the 20th anniversary special) and now I'm crying because literally in interviews the director talks about how it started as an indie cartoon and that was Steven's vision for the show which lead to every single decision they made from set to music. Tmw Broadway honors you, your vision, and your memory better than the host of your brainchild who deliberately do one of the big things you fought over for years for money and completely disrespect everything you've done for them. They're slimey for a reason and that's that on that.
I love the Spongebob actor I love love LOVE him, the way he walks is perfect, the way he talks and moves overall, he’s the perfect casting choice and he’s just so freaking adorable
i saw the show on their closing night on broadway, and i have NEVER felt like that in a theatre. this show is just so full of love and light and genuine happiness, and no matter what age you are there’s something for you in it. ethan slater and the entire cast is INCREDIBLE, and i will cherish that night for the rest of my life. 💛💛
@@bri-ym2vy omg i saw the final show too! It was literally the best broadway experience I’ve had and I’ve seen SO MANY SHOWS. When Ethan started crying I LOST IT 😭
Honestly, what I love the most about this musical is just how HAPPY it is. Broadway musicals are a complex, strong medium to tell deep, emotional stories with. But, I really think happier stories have a place with them again. This musical shows just how good a show based off of a silly media can be if the people behind it actually cared.
I loved this musical. It's sad that people didn't like the concept of this thoughl, before even giving it a chance, but I think it deserves more praise than it gets.
I think a lot of people don't even try to watch this musical because they think it's goofy just because it's based on spongebob. When I told about it to one of my friends he JUDGED ME SO MUCH, even though he didn't listen to a single song. I think that's why it didn't get nearly enough recognition as it deserved, simply because people dismissed it before even giving it a try.
I'm not much of a musical guy. So when I saw this I was expecting to laugh at how bad it was. I laughed alright but it was at the jokes. This was so good. I was blown away by how good it was. The settings, the characters the music oh the music. This was fantastic. Massive probs to literally everyone who was apart of this project.
apparently they (nick) would only do the musical if it was something that didnt been done before (plot wise). when it was pitched about the entire town being at risk of literal death from a volcano, it was accepted
That section about fanservice and how you could tell the creators of the musical really cared about the original source material and all was exactly how I felt when I saw the Percy Jackson musical live. As soon as Percy's first line was "I didn't want to be a half-blood" instantly made me realize it was gonna be good, and it was. Thanks for this video as well, gives me something to maybe watch in the future.
*Karen and Plankton arguing. Nobody: Squidward: “They don’t need punishment because they have each other”. Gold. Probably the only time I will laugh at a ‘dislike my spouse’ joke because the context and timing here was perfect.
@@squeakSquak i think he does like the song, he just thought the tone was out of place compared to all the other songs. I do have to disagree with that, but I can see why he said that

this musical is very, very near and dear to my heart, and I'm so glad someone is talking about its brilliance. I got to see it live and it was just so amazing. words cannot describe how great it is. one of the best parts, I think, is that there were generations of people (young kids who probably watch it currently, older teens/young adults like myself, and even people who were middle-aged) who were all equally excited to watch the shit out of that show. OF COURSE the show itself is amazing, but you already covered everything abt what makes the show spectacular in this video, so I wouldn't have anything new to say on that front I'm a theater kid who worked on many shows as part of the stage crew, so the staging and set design makes me (positively) froth at the mouth when I see it. it works not only to immerse everyone in the world of the show, but is also insanely creative and fits right into the aesthetics of the cartoon. AND DONT GET ME STARTED ON THE CONTRAPTIONS THAT THROW THE BOULDERS!! watching them work irl was mind-blowing (PS I am a "No Control" apologist bc that song SLAPS but I get where you're coming from with it not really fitting the tone. in my mind, it sort of fit in in a way bc it drastically changes the tone after everyone finds out the world as they know it is ending. it's still a bit of an odd one out in the sense that the tone doesn't really go back, but yeah I understand your point!) sorry to drop an essay in the comments, I have a hyperfixation on this show and seeing someone talk about it makes me go absolutely feral in a very good way. I wish it had been open for longer, but I think the pro shot was a very good thing to come out of it. please, Broadway. do this more (OH WAIT ONE LAST THING I SWEAR. "Letters" is the absolute best second-act opener you are so incredibly right)
@Harrison Hughes (Student) Fair point, but remember when a Mercedes Benz was featured in Mario Kart 8? If any Nintendo IP were to reference an unrelated topic, it would be Mario Kart. What if the truth is that they've been doing this all along, throughout the series?
@Harrison Hughes (Student) hmm I'm not sure they would do this though. why would Nintendo, a restrictive company, make a deal with Nickelodeon? The pieces don't fit imo. Another strong piece of evidence to support my disbelief is the absence of any SpongeBob characters in Nintendo's Smash Bros ultimate. Of course feel free to object or add your thoughts, I'm very open minded.
Really? I thought he said: "I committed the greatest sin of existence. For I, Mario Jumpman Mario, brought forth the second coming of Lanky. This will be humanity's destruction, for Lanky craves the blood of humanity. Humanity's downfall will soon dawn, when that does.. Lanky's vengeance will be completed. I do not know what he plans on doing once his finale wicked deed is completed, but I fear he will not stop until all of existence pays for his torment and suffering. I lost my faith that I will be given mercy by the gods for my most rancid sin, but, I pray that they will be merciful to the rest of humanity, somehow stopping "Lanky, Humanity's Bane."" I suggest you watch the video by "Wait in the Wings", they explain a lot more of the behind-the-scenes stuff (and you should just watch them in general because its a great channeeeeel)
Fun fact about the TV airing of the musical: there's a scene missing in it. I watched the nickelodeon airing well after the fact and then later got the opportunity to see one of the fresh off broadway versions of the musical live in San Francisco. The wierd sexual tension between Karen and plankton is palpable in the cable version but there's legit a scene I have lovingly dubbed the "big guy" scene where that sexual tension is kinda the entire focus. Spinny office chair kiss and all. It's sweet and definitely not anything I haven't seen in general audience musicals but it makes sense why they wouldn't include it on the cable version. It is nickelodeon afterall.

Same! Honestly the only song I genuinely dislike is Bikini Bottom Boogie, and I'm surprised he didn't bring it up
The way Squidward's legs move is so satisfying for some reason
FOR REAL
Fun fact: No control wasn’t written for the Spongebob Musical, when they approached Bowie he told them he wanted to help but didn’t have time (he was probably too busy writing his own musical and dealing with his decreasing health), he still wanted to help the project, so he allowed them to use *any of his songs* for the musical. They picked a song off the 90’s album “1.Outside”, which is a concept album about a 14 year old girl who gets kidnapped by a cult who thinks that murder is considered art. Also it was produced by the legendary producer Brian Eno.
Jesus, thats a pretty heavy music choice for *spongebob*

I REALLY enjoy the costume designs here as well. Sandy's afro looks almost like a helmet. Krabs with boxing gloves in genius, Plankton with an eyepatch is genius and the extra pair of pants they give Squidward is great as well. The costumes may look cheap at first glance but they're actually really good once you think about it
Squidward's jacket in "I'm not a loser" was so gorgeous!!!
Yeah, it has this DIY vibe that fits the theme and aesthetic of SpongeBob so well! Squidward's costume is just a polo shirt because that's technically what he's wearing in the show all the time, same goes for Mr Krabs-- the "cheapness" of the costumes just add to the charm of the musical and the show, it's amazing
if u notice plankton has like two braids in the back for antenna too!
I saw the show live on Broadway, and when Patrick asked "Is mayonnaise an instrument?" the audience roared it was so good XD
I legit had it in mind for the scene and i freaked out when he actually said it 🤣

That term sounds terrifying enough.
But you have to admit it is accurate
where they decided to put "The Best Day Ever" was completely genius.
I saw it on tour before the pro shot came out and I literally started crying 😭 Even though obviously it was gonna be okay 😂
It's still... kelpy."
Things are scary.

SO TRUE. Everyone who worked o the project was so so dedicated and the recording is FANTASTIC.
That’s the beauty of musical theatre for you, it unites people together! It’s why I love it so much

I never again watched SpongeBob on actual TV because I just couldn’t stop thinking about it 😅
That scene is so disturbing that it dumbfounded me for some reason. I'm glad that Season 9 ended the dark era and went back to its routes for now. I don't know what's gonna happen to Spongebob Squarepants after Stephen Hillenburg's death.

My sister said this was a good one. And she isn’t even a spongebob fan. (But she and I love the episode Band Geeks)
Isn’t it annoying how people like to blindly hate on something they know so little about?
I think one of the reasons Spongebob has so many musical influences is because that's how the original show was. If you take a closer look at the soundtrack from the show and the games, you realize that it's musical styles are very widespread! There's instances of country, rock, jazz, and of course, Hawaiian music! It would make sense that they'd want to capture all those genres together by hiring many different artists. :)

(PS I am a "No Control" apologist bc that song SLAPS but I get where you're coming from with it not really fitting the tone. in my mind, it sort of fit in in a way bc it drastically changes the tone after everyone finds out the world as they know it is ending. it's still a bit of an odd one out in the sense that the tone doesn't really go back, but yeah I understand your point!)
sorry to drop an essay in the comments, I have a hyperfixation on this show and seeing someone talk about it makes me go absolutely feral in a very good way. I wish it had been open for longer, but I think the pro shot was a very good thing to come out of it. please, Broadway. do this more
(OH WAIT ONE LAST THING I SWEAR. "Letters" is the absolute best second-act opener you are so incredibly right)
I'd highly suggest watching Wait in the Wings' video on the creation of this musical. It's super interesting and informative.

Me: *SPITS WATER* There's a freaking SpongeBob Musical?!?!
Same reaction. Kinda sad I'm only finding about this now
Yeah it’s been out for like 3 years, I saw it two years ago and it’s amazing :)
Oh, you poor blind child.
@@nikkoa.3639 better late than never! Welcome to the party 😂
Where do we find it?
I still make jokes about Karen playing a mean glockenspiel.
Me too!!!
Schaffrillas told us to discuss and ya'll are slacking so I'll start: Mario does sound like he says Spongebob.
Totally
Hes saying fuck off
I lost my faith that I will be given mercy by the gods for my most rancid sin, but, I pray that they will be merciful to the rest of humanity, somehow stopping "Lanky, Humanity's Bane."" Though, the audio is quite compressed, so I probably just misheard it a little bit!
P.S. I just listened to the voice-line again, and yeah, I also think he says Spongebob.
Spongebob going
"And as everybody knows, you can always trust the government!"
MAde me burst out chuckling
i had to sing “hero is my middle name” for a cabaret and i haven’t been able to get it out of my head since then. it’s both a blessing and a curse
i like how they made pearl and mr krabs' race different to show that she's not his biological daughter
And that her and sandy are both technically mammals and they’re both played by black women
@@mystikbuttcrack4335 yeah those are really good details they put in there
Yeah, it was a great attention to detail.
@@mystikbuttcrack4335 yeah its actually pretty clever.
@@disneyvillainsfan1666 Yea great attention to detail by making all the well known mammals, such as larry the lobster, black. You guys didn't really think that through, huh?
Slowly, but surely, "And so on, and so forth." is becoming the next "That was his mistake!"
i literally cried when patchy finally met spongebob he has been trying forever. I'm glad the live version didn't bastardize the main series.
I like that most of these characters feel like the actual human version of the cartoon ones
Glad I’m not the only one who cried at Best Day Ever.
I was not expecting to cry over SpongeBob. I was pleasantly suprised
Seeing this live was one of the best things ever. I smiled through basically the entire show and had such a joyous time.
Apparently the actors had a LOT of fun working on this show, often saying that they looked forward to every rehearsal. I suggest you watch the video by "Wait in the Wings", they explain a lot more of the behind-the-scenes stuff (and you should just watch them in general because its a great channeeeeel)
When you say Letimotif and my only thought is of Sideways.
The guy who plays Spongebob looks and moves like a young Jim Carrey, which is perfect
You’re right and I’m just noticing it
I just noticed it too. But he's more like blonde Jim Carrey with mix of Pee Wee.
In case you were interested, his name is Ethan Slater! He's an amazing actor 😌
@@IcyDiamond ey hi again!
Okay but like how could you NOT mention "Daddy Knows Best"!? I forget her name but the woman who plays Pearl absolutely killed it!
He very briefly mentioned that he liked it
Her name is Jai'len Josey! She's incredible
ua-cam.com/channels/AWNXeeLSwC1FaoYEV__u0A.html this is her youtube channel!
