I cried my eyes out! I was a 10 year-old Hunt fan, but a great admirer of Lauda. Seeing him at the race at all moved me beyond belief. Seeing him after the race ... I cried so hard for him. He must have been in agony! A true hero for the ages.
It's not an uncommon thing. Prost and Senna were actually really good friends, and also Hakinnen and Schumacher. They're sportsmen, they love it when someone manages to challenge them fairly. They share the same passion, the same talent, and it's easy for a bond to form

Today they seem like complete strangers to one each other, except for team members, it's sad tbh. Just look the way Niki was close to Prost even tho he won for half a point. I don't recall such a thing when Hamilton "stole" the championship to Massa in 2008, he just walk back to the pits with a smile on his face and acted like nothing happened. Growing up in the 90s, watching Niki as expert on german television it is easy to forget that he is one of the best drivers who ever graced the face of the earth. Not only winning 3 WDCs in F1 but also winning the 24h race at the Nordschleife.
I was such a huge Lauda fan as a kid, I first saw him at the Long Beach Grand Prix in 1977. I was there in 1982 but had a migraine and had to leave early and missed his win. I never saw him race again.
Fun fact: Dale Earnhardt Sr was a big Niki Lauda fan. He also found out (on his team radio at 200mph) that Ayrton Senna died and as soon as he climbed out of the car in victory lane he gave his condolences to Senna on live tv

Nicky Lauda must be the most inspirational ever in F1. Not only was he a great driver who overcame the injuries of a horrific accident, he was an intellectual who understood exactly how his car and his opponents minds worked. He succeeded in everything he did and left this world with the most incredible legacy.
Niki mechanical genius, surgical driver, dedication unrivalled. And still man enough to say no when his principles were lower than the risk to race. When you said no it’s to dangerous that showed a man standing by his principles. That showed a true champion and leader of the sport.
That last fragment and his fourth place showed Lauda had a true race heart. But to me, even a greater moment of courage and glory was his decision to step out in Japan ('76), throwing away the title chances he fought so hard for. First he proved he was willing to do anything to win that title. Than he showed he was human after all: a man who happended to appreciate life even more that racing itself.
Niki's "teammate" at Ferrari in 1977 was Lole (Carlos Reutemann) not Jody Scheckter. Lauda was asked if he considered Reutemann a teammate or a rival and Niki famously replied "Neither."
Niki showed the world what its like having balls of steel. Not only his rivalry with the legendary Hunt, but with the entire world that told him not go back after the crash. All of his hard work and dedication brought F1 and racing in general to where its at today and I don't think F1 could have been this advanced without him. I'm sure Niki and James got a lot of catchup to do in heaven
