He can feel the track through his whole body, he was born for this" . When Senna died, I was like 15, my dad said "a true legend just died, the best ever" I was looking at my dad while he was reading the news and seeing his eyes tear up. Never saw dad so emotional again.
I was 10 when it happend, i run to my Mother room, she was in tears. Brazil cried that day. The same way some remeber 9/11, i remeber that sunday. Guess if you ask for a brazilian the hero, Ayrton Senna will be there, and we have Pelé... to understand what he represented.

What made Senna so special? To think that Senna achieve everything in F1, with the late 80's & early 90's car. When the technology & electronic was still not too dominating the car. Calling Senna an overrated is truly crime.
Here in Brasil we would hope it would rain everyday where Senna would race. I have this very strong memory from my childhood. Watching F1 on Sunday morning with my parents and cheering that it was raining wherever Senna was going to race.
There have been a lot of drivers that destroy competition while they were on the best cars. The difference for Ayrton is that there were many moments of magic while he drove bad cars. There is noone other in F1's history with moments like that and that is the great difference
you forget what schumacher did from 1996 to 1999 in less competitive Ferrari’s and even before 1994 he had moments of brilliance while being a rookie and in much less competitive cars.

@@dj7oya That was one race, my god. What Schumacher did 1996 in Spain in massive rain was more impressive than Monaco 1984 or Donnington 1993 (he had TC). Being 4 seconds per lap faster at some point is insane. I think it never happened before or after. Saying Senna is herculean is delusional fanboy style phrasing. No driver is inhuman or whatever. They can "only" extract the best possible performance from the car they currently drive, not more. I am more impressed by Schumacher than Senna, but I would never come up with such nonsense. He was never overrated he was however often held in high jealousy and fear at his single minded determination by others. After watching F1 for almost 50 years I can honestly say that there are two drivers in that time frame that stand out for me. 1/ Ayrton Senna 2/ Jacques Villeneuve Both drivers only knew how to give absolutely 100% all the time without restraint and sometimes to the point of insanity. But if your looking for a racers racer those are the two. Even Mr Ferrari never criticized Jacques Villeneuve because he understood that he gave his absolute best all every time he drove his car. The only other driver he never criticized was Tazio Nuvolari for exactly the same reason. But back to Senna his confidence was only exceeded by his ability and car control he did not have to have the fastest car to win he just had to have the opportunity. As the Lotus team said if they found a 10th of a second improvement in the car Senna would find that 10th on the track and sometimes even more. Senna was obsessed with winning every single race in any type of vehicle he lived to win and win he indeed did in very difficult and extremely dangerous cars of the era. As unfortunately both he and Jacques lost their lives in these fast and fragile machines. There are many great drivers and many ways you can rate them but if you want the drivers who never flinched and every lap was run at extremely break neck speed lap after lap race after race year after year then these two stand out in this time period and they never disappointed their fans with politics or virtue signalling they just want to win with honor.
how the fuck can you forget Schumacher? He was well known for giving 100% during the entire race, putting down qualifying laps all race, something not even Senna could and an indication is his pretty bad fastest lap stat.

1994's San Marino Grand Prix in Imola has to be the worst memory for any Brazilian motorsport fan. Senna's death still hurts today on our hearts. By the way, Senna and Ratzenberger deaths that weekend shadowed the horrible accident with another Brazilian driver, Rubens Barrichello. He almost died too on Friday's practice. Also the accident at the start of the race injured spectators with all the debris flying over the fence. That weekend was insane in the worst way possible!

As a non-biased brazilian I can safely say he was the best F1 driver to ever exist. Sheer wildness, instinctive driving, crazy strategies and legendary rivalries, he was a trully complete driver. After 88's Monaco GP, Senna said he felt like he was in a tunnel while on the track, almost as he was in a different dimension. On freaking MONACO. It reminds me of those scenes in the Speed Racer live action film where he just enters an imaginary tunnel and drives purely on instinct. That's how good Senna was, but the most important: he absolutely LOVED what he did. He was passionate about the sport and his legacy will always be honoured by other pilots, regardless of which generation they're from. But as a BIASED brazilian I can proudly say he will ALWAYS be the greatest F1 driver to have ever existed, period.

The circuit was knowingly dangerous and there was another fatality (Ratzenberger, RIP) on that same track just a day before and Barichello had also had an almost fatal crash. Every single F1 driver has already crashed, it just happens that Senna crashed really badly in a time where safety wasn't that much of a thing as it is today. In fact it was because of Ratzenberger and Senna that F1 eventually began considering adopting the HANS device and also other safety measures, which still took a while to be implemented officially. Besides all that, his car suspension played a huge role in the crash, as the front wheel lost contact with the track and made him fly towards the wall.
Bruh no one uses facebook in 2024 LOL. I'm a Hamilton fan... but Hamilton as well as myself will tell you Senna is the GOAT. Lewis' entire driving style from his qualifying, wet weather god tier status, overtaking and insane all time race pace is half natural God-given talent and the other half is completely modeled after Ayrton Senna. Senna is the OG... but no one has quite mimicked Senna in all aspects like Hamilton. Sure Verstappen can set a quick one lap... but everything else goes to Hamilton in this era. Hamilton is like Apollo and Senna is Zeus... the OG... the King.
The thing is, let's face it, what made Ayrton a complete driver was that he embodied an unmistakable sensitivity and aggression. These two traits merged into an irrepressible will to win with a heart of gold and an authenticity to his soul and the outside world that he exuded a strong aura that I have never felt again in any F1 driver today. It's about a kind of feeling, perception. Schumacher didn't have that and Verstappen has a little bit of it. Schumacher, whom I hold in high esteem, was reasonable and Verstappen has fire, but not the depth of soul of an Ayrton Senna. Ayrton is and was the greatest. He was in the fast lane both as a driver and as a person.
Senna's death in 1994 is still the biggest plot twist in F1 history. He would have won several titles in Williams (that got undoubtedly the best car on the grid) and his final plan was going to Ferrari in 99 or 2000. Schumacher would have no chance.
People pretending to admire Senna while crying about how Verstappen is racing. It's so ridiculous, in the glory days of F1 the racing was way harder than what we see now and Senna especially was absolutely ruthless on track.
We don't have the radio messages from back then but I don't remember ever hearing Senna slamming his own team the way Max does. When you listen to the interviews with Sennas engineers or designers he was looking at details and doing whatever he could to improve the car. I highly doubt his engineer ever called him childish over the radio. Take a listen to Beyond the Grid with Paul Monaghan (keeping in mind he is in Max's team) he praises Max's ability highly but also takes subtle jabs, his comments saying something like when the car spins its never Max's fault he'll blame the car/team letting him down. Thats not my words, thats his team members. Sennas team member (I forget who right now) didn't want worry him by telling him the skid block had smashed off and broke the gearbox before the race, only telling Senna at the end of the race. Senna said dont worry, always tell me, I would have driven round the issue to make sure it finished (by changing his driving style) amazingly supportive of his team. I think Max is brilliant, truly one of the best the sport has ever seen and I love hard racing but Max gives hard racing but cant take it and thats what annoys me. He kicked off he got ran wide at the first corner in Hungary, then did basically the same thing to Lewis at the next corner but that was fine. Same with Lando and Max in Austria, Max was pulling the same moves on Lando but Max wasnt happy when they are used against him. Senna would fight hard and take it too from everything I've seen. The things Senna kicked off about is obvious things that weren't right like the pole being on the wrong side of the track. Senna also cared a great deal about other people in and out of the F1 which putting Max to one side for a second, makes him quite different to a lot of people. Giving a great deal of money to people in Brazil. (this is taking nothing away from Max's ability in a car, what he did in the wet in Brazil a few years back was amazing, all I'm saying is theres a difference between the two)

Anyone who has seen races with Mansell, Senna, Piquet, Prost, and their contemporaries really knows what F1 is. This was the last harvest where the cars and the guys were insanely wild.

Yes, I was watching the TV coverage of the race,, and till today,, still feel the impact and the shock, of those last moments of Ayrton! I'm Brazilian, and it's easy for me to say that Senna was and still is the best driver who ever lived. However, for me, it was Prost who allowed Senna to become everything he was. Their rivalry brought out the best in each of them.
Senna and Mônaco GP It's as if they were made for each other. There's even a situation where a TV producer from Globo TV ( the official F1 channel in Brazil) was fired and then rehired one day after because he selected a set of random laps from Mônaco GP to be shown on TV and the directors thought it was lazy work, that the guy had just repeated the same lap over and over but after following the background and realizing that the clouds and the people were changing positions, they understood that Senna was following exactly the same route without deviating a single millimeter to either side. Watching Senna racing on those avenues is like watching history being made, it seems that those avenues are alive and bending for Ayrton to pass.
I watched him at Silverstone and brands, and trackside in qualifying he was visiblly different to everyone else, regardless of how good his car was.. just completely spectacular and on the edge, doing things no one else was quite getting to.
94 Senna would recover by the last GP in Adelaide the champioship lead and win it. Senna would have a triple championshp in 94 , 95 and 96 for Williams then move to Indycar win the Indy 500 in 97 While Schumacher would go to Mclaren and win 98 and 99. Senna would Join Ferrari in 99 and after a year adapting as runner up to Schumi would be champion in 2000 for Ferrari where he would then retire, Schumi and Barrichello would be the Ferrari line up in 2001 to 2005. Senna would retire with 7 titles. Montzemolo was already talking to Senna in 93.
In the cockpit of Senna's car there was a Brazilian flag and an Austrian flag. He told Galvão Bueno "when I win, I want to pay tribute to Ratzenberger. Get by and bring me one flag of Austria" rip goat
When Senna died my family and I were having lunch. It was the first and only time I saw my father crying. We lost someone from our family, even that we never met him. And many years after that I cured my depression only watching and reading about Senna's life history.

I'm 52 years old and I've been a huge fan of Mr Senna and Davey Allison. I've watched hundreds of hours in video on Aryton Senna and this was so nicely done. I usually try to stop watching before his fatal accident but this one I watched all of. Thank you very much for this.
It's always great to have such an overview of Senna's career and life, and this video does it as well as any. BUT, the best tribute to Senna and acknowledgement of his greatness that I've seen have been videos looking at his driving style, what he was doing differently to everyone else, and how unusual it was. He was a breed apart, and the telemetry showed it!

Hey, Brazilian here. Just realized that the wound of Senna's death is still - and maybe forever will be - raw! I was 30 when he died and I still feel in my bones the pain of the scenes on the tv. Brazilians lost a big chunk of our own identity that day because he was a true hero: in and out of the circuits. He was truly a good man.
Good video, but you forgot to say that he made some sequence of incredibles laps at Monaco that he has milimeters from the walls and each lap he got a better time until the team, desparate, called him to slow and it made he lost his focus and collid with the wall. Another thing whas that he stopped his car at a qualifying to save the life of a unconscious pilot that collided. His car was leaking gas and Ayrton turned off the engine. The French pilot Érik Comas said that if Ayrton didn't stopped the engine, probably the car would became a ball of fire in seconds and he would have died.

He's definitely an icon and is one of the best F1 drivers but als a fan I must admit, others have surpassed him in terms of being a complete F1 driver. He died too soon and his pure race craft will never be forgotten!

I wasn't alive at the time, but when I was a child my father always talked about how great Ayrton was, the cars that he drived, and how the whole crountry feel his death. I think after Pele, Ayrton is the great on of my crountry

He was an Icon, a national hero not only for F1 fans, but for everybody. Everybody loved him. Im 34y, im 3 when he died. I didnt watch a single race of him but I cry like a baby when i see now. Its something magic, inexplicable, untouchable, immaculate, unreachable. Close to the sacred.

I was a big fan of Senna, truly remarkable man. Monaco 84 was paramount, and in fact he got away from a potential accident had the race not been stopped: he went hard on the kurb at portiers, damaging his right suspension. The race stopping gave him even more protagonism. I didn't know about the watch, and I'm a watches collecter, lol. Great video.

The thought of Senna moving to IndyCar in 93 or 94 as was rumored when he tested a Penske and was very much on the pace and taught the regulars how to change up their driving style. Knowing how utterly dominant the 94 Penske was, Senna in that car would have been an absolute curbstomp for Penske. PT, Senna, Little Al and Senna would have made an absolutely formidable team. The thought of Senna obliterating the field in a 93 or 94 Penske and battling with Mansell and Emmo and Little Al and Mario and Michael, it's something we never got but the rumors were very very much there in the early 90s though. Remember how big of a deal Nige's move was? Now imagine how much of a boost that would have given IndyCar in Brazil, it would have made F1 into a second or third class sport something Max and Bernie would not be able to deal with at all.

You shouldn't forget Stefan Bellof at the rain race in Monaco, because Bellof was also faster than everyone else. he also caught up with Senna. Stefan Bellof was on a par with Senna in terms of talent and driving skills.

Senna accomplished all he did with only 161 starts. Imagine what he would’ve done on 200-220 starts like most f1 drivers. Goat 🐐
F1 seasons had way less races back then, that's why he's achieved so much in so few races.

Here in Brasil we would hope it would rain everyday where Senna would race. I have this very strong memory from my childhood. Watching F1 on Sunday morning with my parents and cheering that it was raining wherever Senna was going to race.

There have been a lot of drivers that destroy competition while they were on the best cars. The difference for Ayrton is that there were many moments of magic while he drove bad cars. There is noone other in F1's history with moments like that and that is the great difference
you forget what schumacher did from 1996 to 1999 in less competitive Ferrari’s and even before 1994 he had moments of brilliance while being a rookie and in much less competitive cars.

He was never overrated he was however often held in high jealousy and fear at his single minded determination by others.
After watching F1 for almost 50 years I can honestly say that there are two drivers in that time frame that stand out for me.
1/ Ayrton Senna
2/ Jacques Villeneuve
Both drivers only knew how to give absolutely 100% all the time without restraint and sometimes to the point of insanity.
But if your looking for a racers racer those are the two.
Even Mr Ferrari never criticized Jacques Villeneuve because he understood that he gave his absolute best all every time he drove his car. The only other driver he never criticized was Tazio Nuvolari for exactly the same reason.
But back to Senna his confidence was only exceeded by his ability and car control he did not have to have the fastest car to win he just had to have the opportunity.
As the Lotus team said if they found a 10th of a second improvement in the car Senna would find that 10th on the track and sometimes even more.
Senna was obsessed with winning every single race in any type of vehicle he lived to win and win he indeed did in very difficult and extremely dangerous cars of the era.
As unfortunately both he and Jacques lost their lives in these fast and fragile machines.
There are many great drivers and many ways you can rate them but if you want the drivers who never flinched and every lap was run at extremely break neck speed lap after lap race after race year after year then these two stand out in this time period and they never disappointed their fans with politics or virtue signalling they just want to win with honor.
how the fuck can you forget Schumacher? He was well known for giving 100% during the entire race, putting down qualifying laps all race, something not even Senna could and an indication is his pretty bad fastest lap stat.

1994's San Marino Grand Prix in Imola has to be the worst memory for any Brazilian motorsport fan. Senna's death still hurts today on our hearts.
By the way, Senna and Ratzenberger deaths that weekend shadowed the horrible accident with another Brazilian driver, Rubens Barrichello. He almost died too on Friday's practice.
Also the accident at the start of the race injured spectators with all the debris flying over the fence. That weekend was insane in the worst way possible!

As a non-biased brazilian I can safely say he was the best F1 driver to ever exist. Sheer wildness, instinctive driving, crazy strategies and legendary rivalries, he was a trully complete driver. After 88's Monaco GP, Senna said he felt like he was in a tunnel while on the track, almost as he was in a different dimension. On freaking MONACO. It reminds me of those scenes in the Speed Racer live action film where he just enters an imaginary tunnel and drives purely on instinct. That's how good Senna was, but the most important: he absolutely LOVED what he did. He was passionate about the sport and his legacy will always be honoured by other pilots, regardless of which generation they're from.
But as a BIASED brazilian I can proudly say he will ALWAYS be the greatest F1 driver to have ever existed, period.

The circuit was knowingly dangerous and there was another fatality (Ratzenberger, RIP) on that same track just a day before and Barichello had also had an almost fatal crash. Every single F1 driver has already crashed, it just happens that Senna crashed really badly in a time where safety wasn't that much of a thing as it is today. In fact it was because of Ratzenberger and Senna that F1 eventually began considering adopting the HANS device and also other safety measures, which still took a while to be implemented officially. Besides all that, his car suspension played a huge role in the crash, as the front wheel lost contact with the track and made him fly towards the wall.

The thing is, let's face it, what made Ayrton a complete driver was that he embodied an unmistakable sensitivity and aggression. These two traits merged into an irrepressible will to win with a heart of gold and an authenticity to his soul and the outside world that he exuded a strong aura that I have never felt again in any F1 driver today. It's about a kind of feeling, perception. Schumacher didn't have that and Verstappen has a little bit of it. Schumacher, whom I hold in high esteem, was reasonable and Verstappen has fire, but not the depth of soul of an Ayrton Senna. Ayrton is and was the greatest. He was in the fast lane both as a driver and as a person.
The wet run at Donington proved that to me.

He would have won several titles in Williams (that got undoubtedly the best car on the grid) and his final plan was going to Ferrari in 99 or 2000.

It's so ridiculous, in the glory days of F1 the racing was way harder than what we see now and Senna especially was absolutely ruthless on track.
We don't have the radio messages from back then but I don't remember ever hearing Senna slamming his own team the way Max does. When you listen to the interviews with Sennas engineers or designers he was looking at details and doing whatever he could to improve the car. I highly doubt his engineer ever called him childish over the radio.
Take a listen to Beyond the Grid with Paul Monaghan (keeping in mind he is in Max's team) he praises Max's ability highly but also takes subtle jabs, his comments saying something like when the car spins its never Max's fault he'll blame the car/team letting him down. Thats not my words, thats his team members.
Sennas team member (I forget who right now) didn't want worry him by telling him the skid block had smashed off and broke the gearbox before the race, only telling Senna at the end of the race. Senna said dont worry, always tell me, I would have driven round the issue to make sure it finished (by changing his driving style) amazingly supportive of his team.
I think Max is brilliant, truly one of the best the sport has ever seen and I love hard racing but Max gives hard racing but cant take it and thats what annoys me. He kicked off he got ran wide at the first corner in Hungary, then did basically the same thing to Lewis at the next corner but that was fine. Same with Lando and Max in Austria, Max was pulling the same moves on Lando but Max wasnt happy when they are used against him. Senna would fight hard and take it too from everything I've seen. The things Senna kicked off about is obvious things that weren't right like the pole being on the wrong side of the track.
Senna also cared a great deal about other people in and out of the F1 which putting Max to one side for a second, makes him quite different to a lot of people. Giving a great deal of money to people in Brazil.
(this is taking nothing away from Max's ability in a car, what he did in the wet in Brazil a few years back was amazing, all I'm saying is theres a difference between the two)

I'm Brazilian, and it's easy for me to say that Senna was and still is the best driver who ever lived. However, for me, it was Prost who allowed Senna to become everything he was. Their rivalry brought out the best in each of them.
So much so that Prost attended Senna's funeral as a sign of Prost's respect for a true and worthy opponent.
Senna and Mônaco GP It's as if they were made for each other. There's even a situation where a TV producer from Globo TV ( the official F1 channel in Brazil) was fired and then rehired one day after because he selected a set of random laps from Mônaco GP to be shown on TV and the directors thought it was lazy work, that the guy had just repeated the same lap over and over but after following the background and realizing that the clouds and the people were changing positions, they understood that Senna was following exactly the same route without deviating a single millimeter to either side. Watching Senna racing on those avenues is like watching history being made, it seems that those avenues are alive and bending for Ayrton to pass.
I watched him at Silverstone and brands, and trackside in qualifying he was visiblly different to everyone else, regardless of how good his car was.. just completely spectacular and on the edge, doing things no one else was quite getting to.

Senna would Join Ferrari in 99 and after a year adapting as runner up to Schumi would be champion in 2000 for Ferrari where he would then retire, Schumi and Barrichello would be the Ferrari line up in 2001 to 2005. Senna would retire with 7 titles. Montzemolo was already talking to Senna in 93.

It's always great to have such an overview of Senna's career and life, and this video does it as well as any. BUT, the best tribute to Senna and acknowledgement of his greatness that I've seen have been videos looking at his driving style, what he was doing differently to everyone else, and how unusual it was. He was a breed apart, and the telemetry showed it!

Hey, Brazilian here. Just realized that the wound of Senna's death is still - and maybe forever will be - raw! I was 30 when he died and I still feel in my bones the pain of the scenes on the tv. Brazilians lost a big chunk of our own identity that day because he was a true hero: in and out of the circuits. He was truly a good man.
Good video, but you forgot to say that he made some sequence of incredibles laps at Monaco that he has milimeters from the walls and each lap he got a better time until the team, desparate, called him to slow and it made he lost his focus and collid with the wall.
Another thing whas that he stopped his car at a qualifying to save the life of a unconscious pilot that collided. His car was leaking gas and Ayrton turned off the engine. The French pilot Érik Comas said that if Ayrton didn't stopped the engine, probably the car would became a ball of fire in seconds and he would have died.

I was a big fan of Senna, truly remarkable man. Monaco 84 was paramount, and in fact he got away from a potential accident had the race not been stopped: he went hard on the kurb at portiers, damaging his right suspension. The race stopping gave him even more protagonism. I didn't know about the watch, and I'm a watches collecter, lol. Great video.

That race where he was stuck in 1 gear and still win the race was the greatest drive of all time. He is the number 1 in history with his race style and charisma
The thought of Senna moving to IndyCar in 93 or 94 as was rumored when he tested a Penske and was very much on the pace and taught the regulars how to change up their driving style. Knowing how utterly dominant the 94 Penske was, Senna in that car would have been an absolute curbstomp for Penske. PT, Senna, Little Al and Senna would have made an absolutely formidable team. The thought of Senna obliterating the field in a 93 or 94 Penske and battling with Mansell and Emmo and Little Al and Mario and Michael, it's something we never got but the rumors were very very much there in the early 90s though. Remember how big of a deal Nige's move was?
Now imagine how much of a boost that would have given IndyCar in Brazil, it would have made F1 into a second or third class sport something Max and Bernie would not be able to deal with at all.

Senna dated a 15 years old girl because the age of consent in Brazil is 15, not 18 like in majority of countries in the world. Both of them were Brazilians so they follow the Brazilian's rules, not whichever country rules you're from.
