Thanks to the BEST colorizer around: Mrs. Kruggsmash!
A HUGE thanks to all of my patrons, without whom I would not be doing these videos right now!

Also, sorry about that Jump-scare. Kinda had to do it :p - Ігри
“This is going to take a single episode” three episodes later.. “look at all these water wheels”
"This is going to be a quick thing" 26 episodes later- "...and the necromancer queen flew her giant bat monster abound the haunted fortress!"
... Bruh, we heard you like waterwheels, so we put these water wheels, on your waterwheel, so you can waterkeep while you waterkeep. >)X^D
@@kruggsmash Next time you make a slayer fortress like that, I suggest trying to make whole suits of armour and weapons out of monsterbits, Monsterhunter style :D
If only you knew...
I'd really love if Cata became a regular series next to DF.
And it never did, shame...
11:13 "Identify yourself!" "Identify yourself!" "Identify yourself!" "Identify yourself!"
Krugg are you sure this isn't some mode of DF adventure mode? :D
Really interesting look at my favorite game 😍
Now you should try his favorite game! I would love to see a dwarf fortress campaign
Thank ya, buddy!
Rycon Roleplays Dwarf fortress when?
Yoo I legit just found your channel the day before this came out!
I did not expect to see you here, Rycon. I am very pleasantly surprised though, to see one of my favorite youtubers watching another one of my favorite youtubers.
Me at 0:01: How dare he play something other than Dwarf Fortress. I will never forgive him for this.
Me at 15:00: I will pardon Kruggsmash just this once.
Me at 30:00: *Begrudgingly downloading Cataclysm*
Cataclysm I find is a much more cohesive game than dwarf fortress adventurer mode. If you like adventurer mode, you'll love cataclysm. You can play it very much the same way, only there are robots with guns and mutant honey badgers with bat wings.
I never really got into DF adventure, but I'm digging Cataclysm so far.
You, 50 hours later, cursing the bullshit design choices by arrogant idiots who run everything: *angrily uninstalls Cataclysm*
Nope. I crushed the game pretty easily, actually, to the point that I started looking closer at the game code and started work on creating my own content for the game, and provided a lot of feedback and information on the main project's Github as well. The sheer arrogance of the lead developer, trying to claim that alcohol is not a disinfectant and that his word was LAW when he's modelled the game as a close-to-reality fantasy survival scenario, among other things, quickly turned any enjoyment I still had remaining to disgust. @The Jester - Fool Of Hearts
Most of the difficulty with the harder starts like the druggie or the prisoner is just in surviving the immediate situation; once you get out, your priorities and how you handle everything going forward remains unchanged.
And of course he's using the LEAST detailed tileset he could possibly find. xD
rofl, been reading all your comments.
You complain a lot! lol
I appreciate the frank opinions {:)
Oh and thanks for watching, y'bearded bastard :)
ASCII WOULD BE MORE DETAILED
This was great. I really enjoyed the stories. If you ever intend to expand the number of cataclysm episodes here are some ideas:
If you create a new world you may want to enable random npcs spawns and that you spawn with a npc around. The ones that spawn with you often have a starting quest for you like "i need antibiotics", which are cool, and you can sometimes convince you to be your companion. The random npc spawns are very rare but those npcs play the game like you do, searching for weapons and food and if they meet you they might be scared, might rob you, or might want to join you. I feel it adds a lot. You might want to enable npc needs, so they need food and water, if you want to be more realistic or keep it as is so it feels more like DF-adventure-mode companions.
The survival shelter has a console which gives you a quest where you get an address of a refugee shelter with actual people in it. It's often quite a way off, so it's usually a very entertaining road trip.
Most of the included mods are great, they add a lot of cool things without feeling like you changed the the game as it was intended.
From a more technical standpoint, the map is saved in small files, one file per roughly the area you can see at once. So if you play and die/sleep/save only the files you touched get updated. So the fun thing you can do is this: Put the game/saved world in a synced folder like with dropbox or github or google drive and give access to that folder to your friends. Now you can play the world together in some weird singleplayer MMO version. You'll never see each other, but you'll see the stories they left behind. Like the car they crashed, their corpse where they died, the shelter they build, etc. You might be able to leverage this access as a patreon reward. Giving people a chance of immortalizing themselves by leaving a corpse in your world, or carving "Madrawn was here" into a wall before you take the world to record some episodes. And after your done you can put the world back to let people in your post-episode world. As the world is basically infinite it's impossible for one person to "ruin" the whole world,
... That shared community world idea is brilliant, M8! >):^D
I've only heard about cataclysm earlier from a certain merchants guild :-)
hey guys sseth here
Oh!
We must all be truly thankful to the generous patronage of the Merchants Guild for bringing us all this wonderful content.
Pekka.D Now that this video is over and I’ve nothing to do it’s time for a smoothing shot of heroin and some sewage water.
I hope Kruggs is endorsed by the generous members of the merchants guild!!
Now all we need is for Rycon to play Dwarf Fortress and the cycle will be complete! :D
TOTALLY! That would be amazing!
Ha! That'd be something, huh?! Keep bugging him about it!
@@kruggsmash (Oh cool, the maestro noticed me.) Will do Boss! XD
Just one episode? That's not fair.
Now I'm left wanting more.
I've never seen this game in isometric view, looks cool.
I haven't either! Figured i'd take a stab at it :)
@Jimmy De'Souza The isometric view is a tileset. I usually play with a top down view.
looks terrible XD its like 8bit adventure or that another game, i forget name with wizards and its like mmo
@Jimmy De'Souza Its still topdown. Its just each till has a texture that gives illusion of isometric.
I'd like to know where i can get it!
"I don't give a sheet, I'm a convict, yo." Best line of RP ever from a dwarf fortress channel.
Awesome intro, i honestly envy your pixel art skills!
Thanks, bro! You can too! I'm preeeeeetty sure i'm not very good at it!
I really hope you are a d&d dungeon master sometimes.
I got a real old school horror anthology vibe from this special episode. The second story especially reminded me of that one short from Creepshow, the Lonesome death of Jordy Verrell.
That's what I ended up going for, yeah. i love those old anthologies :))
Creepshow.. now there's a fun series / movie I haven't watched in a while! My favorite of those is the blob-like one (might have been in Creepshow 2?) where the kids are stuck on a raft and bad things happen (and boobies too!)
Like an episode of the Twilight Zone
I was hoping it'd feel that way :)
More like Tales from the Crypt tbh
That's some quality roleplay 10/10
Most entertaining Cataclysm gameplay I've ever seen.
The isometric view is throwing me. I always used one of the basic top down tile packs when I played CDDA.
Mm, i hear a lot of that. First time I ever played!
Chesthole was the one I used. I looked it up.
@@sagridlocked2963 this led me to urban dictionary where I died

I know you prefaced the video saying that it's not DF but I can't help myself.
This new update has taken Dwarf Fortress in a crazy new direction!
Ha! Weird right? I dunno why they went in such a crazy direction!
What kind of changes? I watched the video on procedurally generating villains, but haven't gotten to take a look at the new update and can't find a changelog anywhere.

_This new update has taken Dwarf Fortress in a crazy new direction!_
Heh, heh. I wish you _could_ build a community in Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead, the way you can in Dwarf Fortress. That's the one thing Cataclysm really needs. I hate the NPCs in Cataclysm, but after awhile, surviving by myself just seems pointless. If you're not trying to rebuild civilization, why bother?
Zombies ate my neighbors! At least, I think that's an intentional reference with that title card
Hell yes it is :)
I'm kinda glad Cataclysm didn't become a mainstay on this channel. While it can be an amazing game, depending on the fork, the outright civil war between DDA and almost every other fork (and the general "realism" based arguments and conflict that lead up to the other forks existing) has lead to a less than chill environment.
This got me addicted to CDDA, I have no regrets.
Probably one of the my favorite videos on the channel, I love how much they nailed the "episodic horror show " feel.
Thanks, bruh :)
This really shows off two things. How good of a story teller you are and how similar most dwarves are. The characters here we're so diverse.
This would be amazing as an annual special. I enjoyed it just as much now as the day it came out. Excellent work as always.
This is absolutely amazing. Would love it if you made some more from time to time!
This was epic. You are a master storyteller. I'd love to see more of this from you!
This is simply amazing! Incredibly atmospheric, entertaining and so very human, in a good sense. Had a great time watching, thank you =)
And the drawings! Adds so much flavor to the video, quite unique
Man, I really love your intros. Structuring the episode as a series of unfortunate events as a means of exploring a game was genius.
If this came back from time to time, I think it would be really great.
I agree
I've never seen anything except dwarf fortress from this channel until now, and I never knew how good its branching out could be. I'd definitely watch more of this!
I love this game. I'd love to see more cataclysm, especially if you get a little bit further consolidating resources, clearing a town out, gathering up all the books and materials needed to learn how to build a house-tank, only to be killed by a random mutant badger with tentacles for arms!
I'm so glad you're experimenting with other games, i think your style works perfectly for games in which you need to use your imagination. I specialy love the pulp horror comic style you've given the stories.
You know it’s gonna be good when he buts a new 8 bit intro in
I hope it was! I got pretty excited for it anyways :)
Kruggsmash! Really cool episode and neat role-playing you performed there! Seriously cool and good stories told. This was satisfactory absolutely!
A fine Halloween treat, Im looking forward to more dwarf fortress, but now im also hoping a few cataclysm episodes get thrown in there too!
I would love a full playthrough of this. This game is honestly my favorite survival game.
LOVED THIS! Would genuinely love to see more!
Oh wow, you're an even better storyteller than I've expected! This shows great promise!
This was an excellent video. I would really be interested in seeing more of this game!
I may need to rewatch this multiple times. At least until we get a full CDDA series from you Kruggsmash! Another great episode and a terrifying change of pace indeed.
Loved the intro! Really looking forward to seeing more cool stuff outside DF!
Oh hell yeah, love CDDA.
Makes two of us. I hadn't played it all too much beforehand!
This was fantastic. I wouldn't mind seeing some more of it in future.
You definitely need to play more cataclysm I love the stories you tell really are the highlight of my days in tough times in my life right now!!! Never give up keep making videos!!!
Love it Krugg! With your story style, awesome and entertaining! Please do more (even if just Halloween specials)!
Cataclysm is one of my favorite roguelikes, and one of the only ones I'm good at.
High intensity spookiness with that intro bro
Aw MAN! That intro is looking amazing, good job as always krugg :D
Thank ye buddy! It took some serious doing!
Just a tip, the trick to escaping the prison is to make a makeshift crowbar with a pipe and chunk of steel, and a nailboard trap with a two-by-four and nails. Use the nailboard trap to make the robots kill themselves and then use the crowbar to pry the prison doors open.
Interesting. I've never tried making a nailboard trap. I've always just lured the robots out of position by making noise in the other direction (using a different stairs), then run back to the first stairs and out (using the crowbar, as you say).
But it's always different. One time, triffids destroyed the walls of the prison, so I just... walked out. Piece of cake! :)
I love your story telling. This is quite an interesting watch. :) I like your style.
I’ve never seen this isometric view of cataclysm, really enjoyed this one, would kill for some more!
That was so fun! What a perfect game for your storytelling style
That was some really good storytelling. These kinds of minimalist games seem to really fit your style of videos. That second story in particular was quite horrifying.
Needed more Crypt Keeper puns!
But, seriously, this was amazing! Hope we get something like this again in a few weeks 🤞
I would really enjoy seeing you do more of this game! I know I would watch it if there was more.
Seriously loved this whole thing! The title card really brought back memories of Zombie’s Ate My Neighbors on the SNES!
This was awesome man! Love the Zombies Ate My Neighbors references!
Never seen the isometric tileset before, looks so dope.
All games with hard to imagine grafics that you illustrate is a must watch for me. Keep up the good work
Holy shit Krugg, great job on the intro! You've really been getting good at your animation skills!
Super Spooky, love the intro 😍 gj once again Kruggsmash!
Oh man, Kruggy, 3 individual, completly cool storys... that was really really nice.
You would not see me frowning if you would do that each quarter of the year ^^.
No really, that was totally rad!
Thank you
That was great! Very fun short little episodes with their own story.
Not only a new Krugg video, but a CDDA video?!?! I wish I could like it more than once!! You're an amazing storyteller!
Loved the horror roleplay and art, would be cool if you did more ! Thanks for the nice quality video once again.
Awesome, that stories were just awesome. Would like to see that again at some time. :D
Still got the charm of your Dwarf fortress videos! Love the video man and cant wait to see more :D
Awesome video Krugg! I was already trying to figure out how you want to make Cataclysm Episodes because from my experience you normally die so quickly. Your Style of Halloween "Untold Stories of the Apocalypse" really nailed it !
FINALLY! I always wanted to see your take on CDDA. :)
Love your channel. Would love it even more if you did a few more cataclysm runs!
Never hit the like button so hard. What do you think about doing a Halloween themed castle or something in Dwarf Fortress?
1:20 I love this drawing in particular. Reminds me of illustrations to them creepy books for kids. Keep at it!
Very much enjoyed this, especially the zookeeper story ! thank you :)
"Com'on friends, You're FREE! Go run before we're all consumed.........ow" XD ungrateful mutt. Great idea for a halloween ep. Also side note, 21:17 that looks like some Junji Ito Nightmare fuel right there. I love it.
I'm proud of you for branching out, I know it's not always easy but it's the smart thing to do. Good luck homie.
The kinda tales from the crypt style with the three smaller stories really, really fits CDDA.
Oof. Like the second hardest start when you describe yourself as "not too good?" :p
Truly a !FUN! Type of idea.
That was really good. Your a glorious story teller.
Awesome! I was actually thinking for a while that this would be the perfect game for your style.
Well, I hope I didn't disappoint!
cool tileset! i know very little of this game and felt it was super easy to follow with it :) and spore-benjamin is gotta be my favourite drawing in this
Ohh, man, what a spooky world! Gun-happy security bots. Fungus that takes over the body and the environment. And giant killer insects! And this is probably just scratching the surface! I think you've sold me on a game to try man. Love these stories you've woven with the characters' backstories and their environments. If you're interested in making more episodes on this game, you won't hear me complaining! This looked like a lot of fun to play and the stories and art were excellent as always. Looking forward to what's coming next week. And as always, best of luck to you, and have !!FUN!!
I'd love to see something like this again, mainly because its much shorter compared to other cataclysm let plays and I just really like your video style of drawings mixed with gameplay, very cool.
This is literally one of my favorite games to watch UA-cam's play. Insta clicked when I saw who and what the video was
I would love if you branched out into cataclysm. It's by far my most loved rougelike. And seeing you play it is so awesome!
Great episode, I really hope to see more Cataclysm content in the future. I personally prefer the 2D overhead tilesets over the isometric ones, but hey if it means more cdda content then I won't complain. Keep up the good work my man!
That was really good!! Felt like I saw some Krugg hidden in there! ;)
That was fantastic storytelling!
I really loved this! I wish there was more of cataclysm
I've never heard of this one. I used to love zombie apocalypses too! Will definitely look it up
This is great, since I love Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead! And, apparently, I _had_ seen this video before. That was just some time ago.
Re. the first part of this, note that, as a prisoner, you can smash a chair with your bare hands to get a weapon. Of course, that will attract the zombies nearby, but at least you'll have a weapon to use when luring them around those tables.
And afterwards, you can use the 2X4 to smash all those lockers, or a stove or other metal object, to get useful items. A pipe and a large piece of metal will let you make a crowbar, so you can pry open doors. (Some of this might have changed recently, since I haven't played lately.)
Prying open locked doors makes _far_ less noise than bashing them down. At the same time, you can deliberately _make_ noise in order to draw enemies off in a certain direction. I think that those security bots were guarding the front entrance to the prison. Basically, you needed to sneak past them in order to get out.
I _think_ you could have pried open the front door (with a crowbar) and escaped immediately, since the bots weren't close enough to see you when you first went in that direction. But if you can stay alive until you have a better idea of what's where, you can often use the stairs to get to the other side of bots, lure them off in that direction, then go back the way you came (via the stairs) to escape. That's not always easy, of course. :)
Anyway, I'd love to see you play this another time, as a change of pace. Admittedly, I love your DF stuff, too.
I like how you narrate this krugg my man, nice and horrory. you should do more spooky series!
Really enjoyed the video and format. Would watch more if you decide to keep doing them.
Well... oddly... the DF story I want to share will still fit the theme. You see, it is time to tell the tale of Innu, The Letter of Banes, the Brown Recluse Spiderwoman.
You see, in the history of the Future Planes, it is accepted that the four demon masters from below were summoned by human gods. The most prolific of the summoners was Sath, the human god of death, chaos and Decay.
The dwarves uncovered this truth at the founding of their first true library. The humans had caught wind of the dissatisfaction the Dwarves had over this and prayed to Sath.
They pleaded with him to spare them from the genocide the dwarves had intended to eventually visit upon them by slaying these demon lords. Sath agreed, but in return he intended to introduce a force even more destructive. And so Innu was brought into this world as the Demi-goddess of death. After the massacre at Tickwater as she had no clue that the first lord had fallen at the beginning of the world, she made her way to the vault of that demon lord and massacred those that lived there, taking with her a singing metal sword.
It is accepted that many important figures had fallen at her hands, including the only Dark Man of his kind and Rosp the roc(this one being a kill she is especially proud of). Smunstsu the demon queen was taken entirely by surprise, her head taken completely off her shoulders. Bitrak the Gecko fiend had heard of her fall and while still taken by surprise, he fell to The Black Iron, a whip she had since Tickwater made of iron. None of the demons were even the most remote of threats until the final of the four. Og the Furious Orange, The marmot demon king. You see, as she entered and killed her way up the tower, she saw something strange when she entered the throne room. The local goblin lord was encased in ice. Ice that was not of this world. She assumed it was Og’s. Seeking to take advantage of the distraction and to disable her opponent, she snuck up and struck the demon king in the neck with her sword. This opened an artery, but it also seemed to do something to Og’s control over his freezing dust because as it spread and launched her a bit into the air, Og himself also became covered in it and was knocked about. This gave her the opening she needed to finish this. Having finished her quest, it was time for her to take her reward but there was one last task to see to. She circled the frozen goblin lord and she began to recount to him all the kills she had done. She told him that this fortress, Lastsin, was now hers, and then she struck him down. It is said she left the skulls of the demon lords on their thrones and that she embraced her final task from Sath with gusto, to lead the goblins in spreading chaos and death.
For now, the Dwarves only know what happened because the tactics of their foes have vanished, at least most of their foes. But Lastsin... only the foolish seek conflict with the Slayer of Rosp, the Letter of Banes, The Demi-goddess of death.
Super spooktacular! :D Very fitting for the month of spooks :3
I forgot how amazing these were
See I was thinking the whistle would be more like a wolfs howl, but that's good too...
Ooo, spooky intro. :D
21:20 -- Nice little Cordyceps reference with the stalks sticking up like that.
Ah, finally my internet is back! It has been interesting look at Cataclysm DDA. Maybe I should try it out as well! Poor zoo guy, his fate felt the worst, but come on, does he know nothing of fungi? Damn overspecialised folks! :D Looking forward to your next thing, Krugg!
Never heard of cataclysm before but I loved this episode!
It is my honour to represent the people in urging you to give us more of this. Please :)
