    I vote you try an offshore fort, like in the intro, make it have one bridge connecting it to the mainland. And try to catch a Sperm Whale

    Every time I see someone using Dwarven Physics like this, I think back to the old "Grimtooth's Traps" books and all the practically-cartoonlike overkill they used. Next time you use the Water Tower, try forcing them down a narrow channel, to the pit that is beneath the retracting drawbridge they used to climb up. The nicest thing about that is that the pit becomes a drowning pool that can become a decorative moat (or that you can drain if you want to get at all the precious goblinite).

    • @kruggsmash
      @kruggsmash  7 років тому +5

      Ooh, I bet something like that'll work beautifully. It was really neat to see the goblins move back down the slope. Ialready have a bunch more ideas on how to improve the whole thing. (whether or not I can accomplish them is another matter!)
      Thanks for watchin', Mike Mark!

    • @MisterUnlikely
      @MisterUnlikely 7 років тому +5

      My own favorite siege trap to date involved a large tower surrounded by a beautiful outdoor statue garden, in turn surrounded by a ring of drawbridges. The goblins and, particularly, their trolls, would path toward it, only for me to raise the drawbridges around them. I could then move my troops at leisure to the tower for target practice. Even then, timing catapulted the occasional goblin skyward, and resetting to catch more invading goblins after the first twenty were killed often killed another handful for a few more moments of atom smasher glee.

    Love the new intro and really got a kick out of this fort. Great stuff man!
    Some ideas:
    * Grand Zoo: Capture as many animals (including human, elves, and goblins) as possible and make exhibits for your dwarves to enjoy.
    * Dwarven Space Program: Carve a rocket that can house 7 dwarves and have it be lava powered for trust.
    * Fortress Anatomy: Make a fortress that internally is shaped as a living body (stomach, heart, brain, etc). Up to you if you want to carve out a body for it.
    * Fairy-tale Castle: Make an aboveground castle in a hunted/evil biome.
    *True Believers: Pick a god and build a temple for them.

    • @kruggsmash
      @kruggsmash  7 років тому +12

      Rofl, I really like the anatomy idea. God, how silly would that be? Those poor, poor lower intestine dwarves.

    Fantastic. I think that a series of raising bridges and pressure plates set for goblin weight would be a delightful entrance. Flinging the little terrors back over, and over again while your military gets into position, or you activate the magma powered magma cannon (that fires magma).

    LMAO After internally freaking out and doing a deep etymological look into the word "belarded" I've concluded that nope, it's not a word. I have a conspiracy theory that Toady meant to put "beleaguered" here and must have had a Freudian slip.

      "be-" is a common prefix for something affected by something, like "bespelled" or "beset" or "begat". Nothing wrong with adding the prefix to a different word grammatically.

    Master/apprentice relationships were added with the library mechanics, I think. I guess your dwarf formed one of those in worldgen, and he migrated to Trapgate, but his master didn't.
    You could do something with locations - a fort that's the worlds greatest tavern and/or library? Tavern has the advantage that you can defend yourself with mercenaries.
    Thanks for the episode! Looking forward to seeing what the next theme fortress is.

    I love just watching people muse over traps in this game. Theres something so satisfying about it. I want to try a pit trap where I drop invaders into, with walls made of raising bridges. And on the other side of those bridges would be a wall of vertical metal bars, dividing the area enemies fall into from an encircling room full of MAGMA CRABS. Then I could just pull a lever and watch as the crabs cook the enemies in the middle. I do worry about the enemies shooting back, but I'm hoping the fire and smoke would deal with that mostly. The bars would have to be fire proof too so they wouldn't melt... Hmm...

    • @kruggsmash
      @kruggsmash  6 років тому

      Magma crabs! Man, that'd be an awesome trap, huh?! Can you trap the things? Tame them? I'll have to look into it!

    Great work on the video. Intro was cool as well, thanks for getting Joey to work!
    Selfishly I would like a more long lasting fort where you build your history. On the other hand, if this is fun for you, keep it up. Do not try to fix something that is not broken. It would be interesting to see if all the short forts survive, if they are in the same world.
    ThunderFort would be cool, where all the visitors enter but fight each other for "freedom" or until the next wave. Just have a bunch of inns so it is the Vegas of the dwarf world.
    Thanks for another cool one Krugg!

      Don't worry, JP- The main series is going to continue next week. I may end up doing these in between series' just to shake things up a bit (both for viewers and for myself!)
      lol, I actually really like the idea of a battle fortress where dwarves have to pass a test in order to live there. Like they have to run some sort of gauntlet or something.

    That was some good dwarfy science. And by that I mean nothing went right. But that water trap could be scaled up and used to push them into a deep pit.
    If you like big sieges or lots of them, they are tied more to the value of your trades right now than they are on the value of your fort. By a lot. My last fort was hugely valuable but it didn't get a big siege until its last year. I was being too cheap with the traders. I recommend buying the silliest, most over priced instruments or wood barrels, or just way over pay for the stuff you buy any way. In my current fort I traded absurd amounts of value in a few adamantine weapon trap components and every monster in the world had been making a bee line to my fort. Which makes me happy.

    • @kruggsmash
      @kruggsmash  7 років тому

      The best dwarven science around!
      Ooh, hrmm. I guess i'll have to try that out! Seems easy enough, anyways. Throw garbage at the traders = goblins attack. Gotcha.

  • @davekachel
    @davekachel 6 років тому

    My favourite trap is a giant water* tank. Its a two layer trap. Most of my forts are towers with two entrances.
    The first layer of the trap is a easy fall pit from the upper entrance. You don't need it, but it makes your water tank into a blood water mess and it is funny when foes drown.
    Aditionally all gross things can be dumbed in the tank and prisioners can be sacrificed for the drowning mermaid.
    But the real deal is the second part: Just a small little opening, triggered with a floodgate. Sometimes located at a cliff, sometimes in a small tunnel. No borders are known for this.
    When something approachs, pull the trigger. I'm to this day not sure if this is intentional but the water will release with such a high velocity that it will instant kill or dismantle near enemies. Targets that are more far away will be pushed away and drown.
    Also they will be covered in feces, blood, limbs, everything. Or they are very wet. Depends.
    The bigger the tank the more fun you will have!
    In one fort I added another opening to the tank for cavarn layers. But the bloody mess never vanished. So it was kind of an stupid idea. (Ok maybe it can work and I was just stupid. dont know for sure)
    *can hold lava if you are brave enough

    Those watertraps work fine if you got a more steady, higher pressured supply of water and a pit, into which the attackers will be pushed. Something like that long channel combined with a drawbridge in the middle above a 20Z deep pit that is triggered with the same lever the water vent opens.
    Only need a way to drain the pit dry again after a proper flushing :)

  • @CaptainHillyan
    @CaptainHillyan 7 років тому +1

    I think the flush trap could work if at the bottom of the ramp there'd be a bridge covering an opening into a deep pit that opens with the same lever.

    Loved this short fortress, the new into is excellent.
    Concerning future fortresses, I agree with ‘The Immortal Ryukan’. A tower in the ocean is a great idea, wanted to do this a while ago but didn’t quite find a way to actually do it.
    Also - I know this has been brought up many times before but since you are not doing one continuous fort, it might we worth considering - how about trying out some other tile sets?I don’t want to insult your beloved tiles, but one of the fancier ones could enhance the viewing experience somewhat. Like actual icons for dwarfs of different professions or a goblin icon instead of a ‘g’.
    Anyway,keep up the good work.

      Yeah, I really want to do an oil riggish fort at some point and I think I know just how to do it.
      Hrmm, I wish I had thought of changing up the tileset before I did this episode- hrmph. Well i'll certainly have to consider it in the future I suppose.
      Thanks for watchin and for your support, SteigEnt! You are a killer!

    • @Sorrynametaken
      @Sorrynametaken 7 років тому +1

      Kruggsmash I've gotten used to the tileset you use, but it is pretty harsh in terms of color contrast. I like CLA as sort of a midpoint between vanilla and more graphical sets.

    • @kruggsmash
      @kruggsmash  7 років тому

      See, all it takes is some getting used to. At this point i'm pretty set in my ways though, I think. If everyone was asking for one particular tileset then I might consider it more seriously but every time someone suggests one it's almost always some new one I've never even heard of. It's not really even about the tileset in my opinion. I mean, it's not like the game would turn into a graphical masterpiece if I started using a more detailed one. It's all about what the images represent!

    • @Sorrynametaken
      @Sorrynametaken 7 років тому

      Kruggsmash It's not really the abstractness, it's the bright colors and whites with the sea of black that I describe as "harsh." I haven't tried it myself, but I believe the color scheme can be tweaked while keeping the same tileset.

    • @steigerente2248
      @steigerente2248 7 років тому

      How about asking the viewers what they like.
      I believe that the more detailed sets are easier to interpret for viewers that have not used these exact tiles, in contrast to the plain ones, that you actually have to use in a game yourself to really understand what each symbol represents.
      While not saying it's the best tile set out there, I prefer playing with Phoebus.

    Honest opinion here. Wasn't a bad video. But I'm totally into the roleplay and storytelling aspects of your work. Not mega enthusiastic about the new series but it wasn't a waste of 28 minutes. Of course you should be doing what you enjoy rather than bending to the will of your viewers- recipe for disaster 'cause you can't satisfy everyone. I'll be awaiting patiently another epic of the scale of Derlersholid :) and of course tuning into every upload. cheers.

    For refining the water trap.
    Instead of just washing away the goblins, trap them in an enclosed space, with channels leading into deep caverns. Using gates, lock them into the room and then open the gate blocking the water flow. now watch as your goblin problems wash away into the deep caverns.

    • @kruggsmash
      @kruggsmash  7 років тому

      Yeah! I'm thinking that if I make a hole at the bottom of the slope and have them enter from the sides then when they get washed down, the they won't be able to avoid the pit. Maybe we'll see a working version in the future?

    "Short" forts? ARE YOU MAKING FUN OF DWARVEN HEIGHT?!?!
    Uhm... anyway. Moving on.
    The relationship screen includes people who aren't in the fort. If there's no title after the name and it's coloured white, it means that they aren't in the fort and can't be selected.
    Master-apprentice relations are related to music/dance/poetry etc., maybe the scholar skills too? So if someone has a master, that's their teacher. I once saw a travelling band where one guy was the master to like half of its musicians, so it isn't completely arbitrary.
    Speaking of which, I hope you will make taverns and libraries in at least some of the short forts! Setting up a tavern isn't really much different from setting up a dining hall. Just add a chest or a coffer for storing mugs.
    Baby from a werebeast... well that's something I haven't seen before. Good job saving the child!
    That was fun... Whatever fort comes next, I'll give it a 50/50 that we learn something.

    • @kruggsmash
      @kruggsmash  7 років тому +2

      Ohh so THAT'S what a master is? I guess I should've figured it'd be something rather mundane. I'm picturing some sort of necromancer/minion type of relationship or something. Oh well!
      Thanks for watchin' and for the info, Izzy!
      Oh, also I dunno if i'd go as high as 50/50..maybe more like 4/96.
