      Can you make another video comparing these two KINDS of filters again. I purchased the quartz 8PL and 64PL on black Friday last year.. and i wanted to see if i should stick with what I got . I do vids and take pics. I think i would have purchased the Variable ND first, but I think I like the feature of having the polarizer added. I think an in-depth vid would help.. thanks.. I dont want to turn into a gear head.

    Up until watching this video, I had no idea what ND filters were - a lot of references to such in comments section of several videos, without any context. Now, I understand quite a lot about them, enough to shop for and put to practical use anyways. Thanks. That's what I really like about this video - concision and precision. Have a blessed day.

    I remember in the day buying a Cheap VND filter and as I would turn it at certain stops,
    it would cast a horrible vignette or "X" across the entire video (Not very smooth looking and I wasted $89)
    So I quickly learned that you "Get what you pay for"
    Putting Premium filters in front of my expensive glass just makes sense and now that I bought premium filters my photos and videos look awesome
    So my advice to anyone who thinks that there's no difference between a $89 VND and a $289 VND.................Think again
    I currently own a complete set of NISI 4x4 V5 pro Filter system ($800 worth) and they just work...........again you get what you pay for ;-)
    Thanks, Dunna for this great explanation on VND's........and Thanks to Petter McKinnon for helping make awesome products for us to use
    I really hate to see people waste money on cheap junk when for a couple hundred more they could have the best quartz Glass on the market
    Best regards, Rick

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  5 років тому +1

      Great advice Rick! I experienced the same thing... and even the $200 filter that I showed in the video gives me the X at the darkest point, which means I can really only use 70% of its function. And I was excited about that one because it even had the hard stops that I assumed would stop me from getting that far.

      It's annoying but it's "situation normal" for UA-cam. If I ever give a thumbs down I leave an explanation why, which invariably leads to lots of troll responses from fanbois of the presenter, so I guess I can now see why people don't add explanations for their thumbs down.
      Where these Polar Pro filters are concerned, I can understand people being fed up of "reviews" of product that are not reviews at all. I've spent 3 hours trying to find a genuine "review" of the filters and all I've gotten is endless shill adverts from people who'v got sent the stuff for free. It's hilarious how so many of them start with the self-righteous declaration that they weren't paid to "review" the items. Dude, you were sent 600 dollars worth of goods to keep. How is that not "getting paid"? No wonder the items are so over-priced. Customers are paying for what seems to be an incredibly high number of free product sent to "influencers" on top of the cost of having a UA-cam "influencer"'s name physically printed all over the product.
      That being said, I personally gave this video a thumbs up because, as you say, it's very well put together and contains lots of useful information around use of ND filters. I just wish someone on UA-cam would do a genuine review - ie one that compares this product with much lower priced alternatives that appear to do the same job just as well.

      @@dunnadidit Truth is I went and ordered the filters anyway. I'm overall happy with my purchase and it's reassuring in many ways to see Gerald come out in favour, although my reading of his review is that actually the B+W filters are about the same price (possibly slightly cheaper) and do as good, if not marginally better, job. Very hard for Gerald to state that up-front because Polar Pro have not just sent him the filters to test but agreed to pay for all those he tested against, and it would be plain bad manners! I DO like the feel of these filters and the quality, but if someone had told me when I bought my Canon 5D IV that I'd be spending a quarter of the price I paid for a couple of filters to slap on the lens I wouldn't have believed them, so I can understand the incredulity of those who aren't happy with the pricing.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  5 років тому +1

      Johnny
      1. This wasn’t a product review and I never claimed it to be, so anyone’s thoughts on my bias of the product really have no relevance(I appreciate that you put “review” in quotations). It was a video where I explained the uses of ND filters and gave some tips for people who might not know about them. The paid sponsored part was that I used and explained some of the PolarPro filters’ features. I did mention that I like the product a lot... which I do, if you don’t think that pet was true, that’s ok... you’re allowed to think what you want.
      2. That tweet about the google pixel was just a joke about how many posts I had seen, I thought the joke pet was pretty obvious when I said that they sent me a jar of pickles... which they obviously didn’t.
      I’m sorry you view all of this in such negative light. I do try to see the positive and constructive side of people’s feedback and criticism so I’ve taken some things from your comments for sure, but it does make me sad that you think that creators like me aren’t trying to benefit our audiences. Everything I do on my channel goes through a filter of “how is this beneficial for my viewers” Sometimes, me getting free things means I can do reviews that benefit viewers. Sometimes companies want to pay me to talk about their product, in which case I try to do an overview of the product and include information on how to best use it... still beneficial for my viewers. I’m well aware that I’m trying to get something out of all of this but it’s definitely not completely selfish... I like to believe other creators (the ones that I know) are the same. There is no conspiracy to trick the audience. We’re just trying to get ahead while also helping others get ahead. I do appreciate that you said this was one of the better videos you saw. But in the end, bias is everywhere... as humans we can’t stop it really. If someone smiles at me I might think they are a nice person, that’s me creating bias. The trick here is that, as consumers, we just need to keep that in mind when we research and factor what we think and believe is happening in front of us. If you think that a reviewer is lying based on being getting a product, then keep that in mind before you buy.

    Steve here! THIS is the video that should've come out 3 days ago (and F-Stoppers, because they did a pretty good job with it as well). Awesome video and great explanation of the use of ND filters, and why my broke ass might want to purchase one.
    If I had to choose, as currently my interest lay in more in photography, which version would be better for taking shots outside in bright sunlight, if I'm not trying to capture motion as well? Primarily looking at landscape; so static subjects.

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  5 років тому +5

      Hey again Steve!
      TLDR - if I had to guess, I'd say the 6-9 stop VND would be the most helpful for you. Anything less and you might not have actually needed one.
      For Landscapes, without wanting to capture motion blur, you might not even really need one. Typically with landscapes, I want to be shooting at f8 or f11 to get the majority of the frame in focus. So right there, we've cut down a lot of light. Then if you aren't looking for a slow shutter time, you can crank it up to a super fast shutter speed to set exposure. All that said, as soon as you decide you want to open up that aperture to blur something in the foreground... you might be in trouble with hitting your highest shutter speed and having nowhere to go. I would do some tests if I were you... take that little trick that I showed for calculating how many stops of an ND filter you need and try it out next time you're shooting landscapes (it should work in 1/3 stops with aperture too so combine the shutter speed and aperture to get your calculation if you have to). Then you should be able to figure out approximately what range you need.... Also... because apparently, I have a lot to say about this... PolarPro has a nice guide to choosing between their fixed ND's on their website that might be helpful.

    Hey Dunna. Thank you for the explanation! Especially the counting stops trick is useful to know. However, I'm not quite sure how to apply it to my system and was wondering if you could expand a bit more. The reason being: my camera also has a 1/48 and 1/96 shutter speed option.
    Does the "3 moves = 1 stop" still apply to that?

    • @dunnadidit
      @dunnadidit  3 роки тому +1

      Hey! Actually that does break up the rule a bit when your camera has those video centric shutter speeds. Unfortunately you just have to keep those in mind and remember that 1 stop is a doubling of shutter speed and find the closest shutter speed to that. So if you’re trying to shoot at 1/48th, one stop above that is 1/96, one above that is 1/192 etc hope that helps

    • @dnnyktzn7247
      @dnnyktzn7247 3 роки тому

      @@dunnadidit Thank you for your answer!
      So my system offers the option for the first 3 stops to have video centric shutter speeds: 48, 50, 60, 80, 96. Then 100, 120, 125, 160, (no 196), 200. Then 200, 240, 250, 320, 400 (although because the 196 is missing it “overlaps”) .. and from there it switches to 3 moves: 500, 640, 800.

      I’m a bit confused as to how this would affect the counting. I guess 48-96 is 1 stop. But is 96-200 then 2? And then until 400 again 3?
      Another question I have regarding this: what if the exposure would be correct at say a shutter speed of 1/80 or 1/125 instead of those full stops. How would that relate to the stops on the ND filter?
      And then last but not least: I would like to buy the PMVND as well but I’m doubting which one would be best for me as I don’t have money for both. I shoot mainly outside in bright daylight, and I saw another video showing the differences between the two with the lens wide open. In that one, it seemed obvious for me to go with the 6-9. However, I usually don’t shoot wide open and if I’m not mistaken the lenses also have better quality 1-2 stops down. So with that in mind, maybe the 2-5 would actually be fine.
What are your experiences on this, keeping this in mind and also the different shutter speeds I have, and which one would you recommend me to get?

Hoping you could help me a bit more. My apologies for all the questions .. I’m just getting started and trying to learn and understand the right methods.
