thanks for the video Markus! I am new to photography my main thing ive been shooting is car photography. I really love how fast paced and quickly you get your points across. And how well you show the difference in what you are trying to explain. I've heard filters are super useful for photography and in my case shooting cars and trucks in the daytime is something I know I can improve and this really cleared up what filters I should be getting into. Thanks again!
100% with you Markus!!! Step up/down filters can be REALLY annoying specially if they get stuck to your filter! Happened to me and I don't want to repeat the ordeal of removing the step down filter adapter ever again
Another use for a CPF is to darken down a LED display - e.g. doing an indoors scene with a TV running as part of the picture. With the CPF you can darken down the light of any LED screen - i.e. the TV or home cinema flatscreen - until its brightness harmonizes perfectly with the brightness of the ambient light of the surroundings. Much easier than going through 100 menus to mess up the adjustments of the TV itself, just to stop the damn' thing from overexposing on your photo or in your video. The secret behind this is quite simple - LED displays emit linear polarized light. (Note: this does not hold for individual LEDs - e.g. Xmas chain. But you can turn down an LED display to absolute black. Just hold a CPF - the right way round - in front of your eye and slowly turn it. The TV picture vanishes completely. Really uncanny!)
I never really thought of different camera and lens combinations having an effect on what filters will work best so that was good to know. I use Nisi Variable ND 1.5-5 and 5-9 filters as I found them to give me the best image quality with no noticeable color cast on lenses I use or noticable X when stopped down. I used to use SLR Magic Variable ND II. It is a Variable ND with a polariser and to get the polarising effect, you just turn the whole filter, which means unscrewing it slightly from the lens. I stopped using it as it slightly softened my images and had a slight warm color cast. I have used polarising filters to remove the reflections on the surface of water so I could get photos and videos of fish and marine life in rock pools. I don't normally use lenses that have a bigger than 77mm filter thread so I use 77mm filters and if necessary, I use Breakthrough CNC step up rings. I'd never use step down rings though due to the high chance of vignetting. I use Variable ND filters rather than fixed NDs because I shoot log video and I want to dial in exposure exactly right with midtones at a certain IRE without changing the shutter speed or aperture and I can't always do that with fixed NDs. I mostly shoot videos' outdoors in natural lighting and the light can change quickly so if I was using fixed NDs and had to switch them out, by the time I changed NDs, the light might have changed and so will my exposure and I'd have to change filters again, but not with a Variable ND.

Great video! I do like step up rings, though. Can experiment with one new filter on multiple lenses. Also, a filter on a ring still offers the protection you mentioned. That said, I certainly understand the system of just getting filters the same size as the lens, as well. It all works.
So informative and creative 😍 Thank you so much 🥰 I also surprised how you got this quality of audio in such strong winds and we don’t see any mic !!! 😮
Thanks for this video. Been looking into this but no good info... I've glued a 41mm UV filter on the front (as there's no thread, just right size to fit in the steps) of my Sony 405 (which you recommend, it's brilliant btw) to stop dust and dirt getting in.. with .. in the UK Bostik Sticks Like S**T (supplied in a cartridge tube) .. great stuff as it doesn't contain any solvent nastiness that hurts plastic etc.. it's an MS Rubber.. I use it with Perspex.. and it will peel off smooth surfaces if you want to remove it. Now to get a Polarization and ND filters.. The 405 does blurry backgrounds but this will take it further..😻..
Great video. I try to use PL filters always in daylight (when I don't forgot it at home) but not to remove water or sky reflections but to control the light orientation before hit the sensor. Since I use the phone to film and I can't control the light, the AI get very confuse when I have the bright green and the sun is about 45º, making the image to wobble. I don't know why no reviewer spot this issue, but most cameras that the image wobbles in certain light conditions (I saw a clip with AX53 wobbling when the guy zoom (probably it would occour with the AX33-43)), if light direction is the issue, the PL will fix that.
I too have a CPL for every lens I own. I often just leave it on all the time. Rarely do I remove it because I can often find a reason to use it. When people ask me what is an ND filter, I just say it's sunglasses for my camera. They instantly get it.

I would also like to buy CPL filters from Pro Master, but you can't find something like that in Europe.... great video as always..
Excellent video😊!
One of those windy days. EH!. I no knowledge about ND filter and Polarizing CPL filters.
That's why I watch your videos to learn.
Enjoyed your video thanks for posting 👍
Thank you, lots of very useful information.
this in my first time watching this channel... great explaination. thank you. auto subscribe !!
Another great video, thanks Markus. Maybe you could do one on headshots, love to see your take on how to do it.
Great video!
I do like step up rings, though. Can experiment with one new filter on multiple lenses.
Also, a filter on a ring still offers the protection you mentioned.
That said, I certainly understand the system of just getting filters the same size as the lens, as well. It all works.
Awesome!
Thanks for posting this!
So many people are going to find this helpful
I REALLY appreciate your videos and perspectives.
Thank you!
Interesting video, and congratulations for 100k subscribers
Great Tips Mr. Markus. I have had the same problem with trying to find a "universal" Polarizer for all my lenses... they don't exist (imho). Cheers!
Thanks so much for your straight up style 😊❤
Thank-you for a succinct and clear explanation! Have a great week....
Thanks, you too!
I’m with you. I hate taking out the filter from one lens to another. Just bite the bullet and buy one for each lens size
So informative and creative 😍
Thank you so much 🥰
I also surprised how you got this quality of audio in such strong winds and we don’t see any mic !!! 😮
Thank you. I have an extensive audio series on this channel showing how I did all that
Invaluable information ! Thanks !
Thank you for sharing the knowledge!
Polarized image is out of the box🤯
i never realized the effect changes depending on the direction of the sun. I wondered why the effect was so different every time.
