    Had one hit my ultralight rod with 10lb braid today and I didn't stand a chance. Fought for about 10 minutes and almost had it landed until it kicked and broke off.
    Are a big clump of worms your go-to? Any luck with cutbait?

    Wow awesome catch man. We caught one before in legend as big as the one you caught. We were planning of coming back there but I don’t know if it is open now. Last year we went there but wasn’t able to fish cause it was closed. And we wasted 3hrs drive as we came from Calgary. I feel so lucky watching your video to be able to know more spot and not waste 3hr of drive next time we came back. Thank you for sharing, very informative. I’m a subscriber now. Fish on🎣

    I don’t know how well this actually works because I don’t really have any experience with sturgeon, but I’ve been told that ice fishing tip up line works great as a leader material for targeting sturgeon if you don’t want to buy specialized sturgeon leader.

    • @barrybutleroutdoors5293
      @barrybutleroutdoors5293  3 місяці тому

      @@19DannyBoy65 it forsure can. Thin braid can cut them open very easily. So using a thicker line like a ice fishing line or a sturgeon nylon leader does work. I'd go minimum 40lb tho .

    While it may be legal to do in Alberta , the river spans more than one province and in Saskatchewan you cannot target these fish. As a sportsman and a person who has gone to BC to fish sturgeon legally ,the provinces need to get on the same page with management. As the comment earlier stated it is almost non existent in the states. We need to get together and get all provinces to treat management the same way or we will not have this fish around for long. As for the video, I do not hold it against the maker just wish they would not have shown it as more interest will almost certainly lead to less sturgeon.

      I also feel like of they open up that can of worms closing fishign to fish u can't keep or at risk, they will have to close all the streams for grayling, bulls, cutties, and all other fish who are at risk in the province. Teaching conservation and proper technique goes a long way,

      @@barrybutleroutdoors5293 I feel like proper gear and techniques are the way to go. Show it's a great sportfish and people will care about them and fight for them. Wouldn't mind seeing more FnW in general to prevent any possible poachers (nsr and otherwise) since sturgeon are so slow to reproduce and recover from way back when you could keep them. The money for that would likely mean more expensive licenses, but that's another can of worms. I feel like if the government banned targeting them, people would use the same set-ups in the same places claiming to be targeting suckers. When asked about the heavy gear people could say something like "Well I mostly fish for big pike(/lakers) and find suckers make great bait so that's why I'm targeting them. My rod is heavy because I only have one so I make do with what I have." As somewhat of a middle-ground approach maybe the gov should say something like "No pickerel rigs or barbed hooks in waters containing sturgeon".
